[This is a re-post of my review from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. The Place Beyond the Pines opens tomorrow in wide release.]

Writer-director Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines is a rich, multi-layered narrative dripping with fatalism, guilt, honor, and no easy answers. It is an epic family saga that defies easy explanation, and rebels against the structure of a traditional narrative. His gripping tale shows split-second connections that last lifetimes, and old sins that reach across generations. Cianfrance has created a remarkable work that reaches a grand ambition with an intimate tale. And I have to tell you why it works without divulging the twists and turns of its razor-sharp script.

Without revealing any of the surprising plot developments, I'll break down The Place Beyond the Pines in its broad arcs. The story follows three men: There's Luke (Ryan Gosling), a stunt cyclist and ex-convinct who wants to find a way to support his infant son and make a family with his former fling and his son's mother, Rosina (Eva Mendes). Avery (Bradley Cooper) is an ambitious rookie cop who becomes a local hero only to find himself forced to confront corruption in the police department. Finally, Jason (Dane DeHaan) is an aloof teenager searching for the truth about his deceased father. The stories are connected, but I won't say how.

I will say they're connected through brief, but crucial moments. Cianfrance has crafted an epic in three parts, and although the movie runs two hours and thirty minutes, ...

Now playing in limited release and expanding nationwide this weekend is one of the best films you’re going to see this year: director Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines. The pic centers on a professional motorcycle rider turned bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper). Saying more would be detrimental to your enjoyment of the film, and I would encourage you to be very careful when reading about it. Pines also stars Eva Mendes, Bruce Greenwood, Dane DeHaan, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, and Rose Byrne. For more on the film, here are images, clips, and everything we’ve previously posted on the film.

At the New York City press day, I got to speak with Mendes. We talked about how she landed her role, the way she prepared to make sure her character looked real and authentic on screen, how Cianfrance asked her to make the decision of who to cast as her on-screen mother, what's it been like waiting for the film to come out after premiering at TIFF, and more. In addition, she also talked about who she plays in Larry David's Clear History. Hit the jump to watch.

Finally, click here to watch my video interview with Ryan Gosling.

Focus Features has released a new poster and images for Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines. The film centers on a generational conflict involving two fathers: one a pro-motorcycle rider and bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie cop on the rise (Bradley Cooper). This was one of my favorite films at TIFF 2012, and I'm glad that general audiences are very close to seeing it.

Hit the jump to check out the poster and images. The film also stars Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, Rose Byrne, Emory Cohen, and Dane DeHaan. The Place Beyond the Pines opens Friday in limited release.

Focus Features has released a new clip from Derek Cianfrance's drama The Place Beyond the Pines. The film centers on a generational conflict involving two fathers: one a pro-motorcycle rider and bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie cop on the rise (Bradley Cooper). Eva Mendes co-stars as the girlfriend of Gosling's character. As I've said before, you want to try and keep yourself in the dark as much as possible on this flick, and I would encourage you to be very careful when reading about it. I saw the movie at TIFF, and it has a good chance of being on my Top 10 films of 2013.

Hit the jump to check out the clip. The Place Beyond the Pines opens in limited release on March 29th. The film has also set up a Tumblr, which you can check out here.

Eleven new images from Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines have been released. The film centers on a generational conflict involving two fathers: one a pro-motorcycle rider and bank robber (Ryan Gosling) and a rookie cop on the rise (Bradley Cooper). Saying more would be detrimental to your enjoyment of the film, and I would encourage you to be very careful when reading about it. I saw the movie at TIFF, and it has a good chance of being on my Top 10 films of 2013. I'm a little surprised the film is getting released in March since it could have some serious awards potential.

The first trailer for director Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines has gone online. The film centers on two fathers: one is a pro-motorcycle rider and bank robber (Ryan Gosling) while the other is a rookie cop on the rise (Bradley Cooper). Though the two leads are instantly set on a collision course, it's hard to know who to root for with such compelling actors in their respective multi-dimensional roles. You can also check out two clips from the film here and read Matt Goldberg's review from TIFF.

The Place Beyond the Pines also stars Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Rose Byrne and Ray Liotta. The film opens March 29, 2013. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis for The Place Beyond the Pines:
Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son. But when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper), their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud. The Place Beyond the Pines is a rich dramatic thriller, tracing the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains.

From writer/director Leos Crax (The Lovers on the Bridge) comes Holy Motors, a off-the-rails journey that follows a day in the life of an actor who transforms into nine different characters across multiple genres. The first trailer for the French film has gone online and you can make of it what you will, but without seeing the whole film, I'm completely lost but enjoying the ride. Check out Matt Goldberg's review of the film from Fantastic Fest 2012 to get caught up.

Holy Motors, starring Denis Lavant, Edith Scob, Kylie Minogue and Eva Mendes, is touring the festival circuit. Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

Check out the first trailer for Holy Motors below (click over to Apple to view in HD):

Here's the equally absurd synopsis for Holy Motors :
Over the course of a single day, Monsieur Oscar travels by limousine around Paris to a series of nine "appointments," transforming into new characters or incarnations at each stop. Fetched in the morning by Celine, his trusty chauffeur on this surreal journey, Oscar begins the day as a captain of industry. Then he becomes a gypsy crone, begging for spare change on a bridge over the Seine. Inside a digital production facility, he's a ninja warrior transformed by cutting edge technology into a reptilian sex god. Next he's a gibberish-spewing troglodyte who kidnaps a fashion model from a photo shoot in Pere-Lachaise cemetery, ferrying her to his underground lair in the sewers. The Toronto Film Festival is widely considered to be the place where a majority of the buzz for so-called “awards films” begins, and this year one of the biggest surprises was Derek Cianfrance’s (Blue Valentine) crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines. The pic stars Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper and centers on the intense feud between a professional motorcycle rider turned bank robber (Gosling) and a rookie police officer (Cooper). The film premiered to an enthusiastically positive response at TIFF, with heavy praise given to the film’s scope and impact; our own Matt Goldberg called it an “epic family saga” in his positive review.

Focus Features acquired the film for 2013 distribution, and many figured the drama would be poised for an awards season release sometime in the fall. Now Box Office Mojo reports that we’ll see the pic much sooner than expected, as The Place Beyond the Pines has been dated for a limited release on March 29th, 2013. This is great news for those of us eager to see what everyone was buzzing about back at TIFF, but it’s a little surprising that Focus is dropping this one so early in the year.

It looks like Larry David's comedy feature set up to debut on HBO finally has a name: Clear History. More important than that oddly ambiguous title is the all-star cast that David and director Greg Mottola (Superbad) have lined up. We previously reported that Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Michael Keaton (Batman) were attached to star, but a slew of others have joined the production. Clear History will also feature Kate Hudson, Bill Hader, Amy Ryan, Eva Mendes, JB Smoove, Danny McBride and Phillip Michael Hall. Hit the jump for more on Clear History.

Variety reports on the new title for the David/Mottola project as well as the cast additions. The plot of Clear History concerns David and Hamm’s characters as investors in an electric car company. Though both of them have different goals in mind, the outcome favors Hamm’s businessman who becomes obscenely rich and Nathan Flomm (David) to collapse into failure, obviously causing tension beween the two.

The men are reunited, in a way, ten years later when Flomm is a ruin of a man and has taken on the persona of one Rolly DaVore. When he sees that Hamm's character has shown up on the small island reserve for a vacation, he resolves to seek his revenge and drive him away.

David co-wrote Clear History with Curb Your Enthusiasm writers and exec producers Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer. Production is scheduled to start in Massachusetts this fall, but there has yet to be an announcement on a debut date.

Cianfrance has crafted an epic in three parts, and although the movie runs two hours and thirty minutes, the character arcs almost function as three 50-minute films with profound connections. This ingenious pacing makes the story feel like a vast journey, ...

In the drama Girl in Progress, actress Eva Mendes plays single mom Grace, a woman who is too busy juggling work, bills and her very married doctor boyfriend (Matthew Modine) to give her teenage daughter, Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez) the attention she desperately needs and craves. Fed up and frustrated, Ansiedad is inspired to skip adolescence and get an early start on her life without her mother, but quickly learns that, in trying so hard to grow up, she just might end up exactly like the woman she’s trying so hard not to become.

At the film’s press day, Eva Mendes talked about playing such a damaged and complicated character, how she sees herself as a work in progress, her own difficult transition from girl to woman, working with her young co-star, and having no hesitation about playing a mom. She also talked about her recent trip to Sierra Leone, for an upcoming PBS documentary. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Question: What was it about this role that attracted you?

Eva Mendes: I was attracted to the fact that the character was such a mess of a woman and such a disaster of a mother, but really, truly trying her best. I wanted to play a really flawed, real human being, and I knew, within the first few pages of the script, that she was that. I think she’s just awful. I love that she’s a work in progress, and I love that she’s trying her best and she ...

The first poster for Lee Daniels' adaptation of The Paperboy has gone online along with a new poster for the action-comedy The Baytown Disco starring Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Mendes. I like the simplicity of the Paperboy poster as well as the throwback font. It doesn't tell you much about the movie, but it does let us know that Zac Efron has really been working on his biceps.

The previous poster for The Baytown Disco was great but this new one is an overcrowded mess. Also, both posters use the term "whip-ass", which I've never heard before. It seems like someone said the tagline should include the word "whoop-ass", but spell-check wouldn't accept it, so they had to go with "whip-ass". Hit the jump to check out the posters. Both movies are due out in 2012.

Poster via Moviehole.

Here's the synopsis (via Moviehole):
The film is about the brother (Zac Efron) of an investigative reporter at the Miami Times (Matthew McConaughey) who tries to help him free a possibly-innocent man on death row (John Cusack). Then things go a bit sour when Efron falls in love with a lady who Cusack’s character’s been writing to from inside the prison (Nicole Kidman).

Here's the official synopsis:
The rousing rebel spirit of a family of Southern thugs takes off at breakneck speed in "The Baytown Disco" -- a wickedly playful, high-velocity action-comedy in which three infamously ruthless Alabama brothers find themselves on the wrong side of crooked cops, relentless Feds, ...

A Black List spec script written by Lauryn Kahn may have found its director in Jake Szymanksi (Saturday Night Live). Kahn, who had previously worked as an assistant to Adam McKay at “Funny or Die,” had her comedy effort picked up by Fox 2000 earlier this year. Szymanski, a director of numerous shorts at “Funny or Die,” has been eyed by the studio to helm the project, He’s Fuckin’ Perfect. The plot follows a girl who is savvy in the ways of social media but hesitant when it comes to romance. Using her tech skills to vet her friends’ dates, she happens to stumble upon the perfect guy and decides to turn herself into his ideal woman. Emma Stone was previously reported to be circling the role.

He’s Fuckin’ Perfect will be produced through Gary Sanchez, the production company of Will Ferrell and McKay, who also helped Kahn hone and shape her script. Hit the jump for more on the project and an example of Szymanski’s work.

Deadline reports that Stone’s involvement with the project is now unlikely, although the studio remains optimistic. If she opts to star in He’s Fuckin’ Perfect, Stone can join the likes of Matt Dillon, Rachel Bilson, and Paris Hilton as celebrities who have been directed by Szymanski. Did you know he even directed the following sex tape starring Eva Mendes?

Eva Mendes has joined Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in The Place Beyond the Pines with Greta Gerwig in Talks to co-star. Derek Cianfrance's follow-up to Blue Valentine stars Gosling as a biker-turned-bank-robber and Cooper as a cop-turned-politician in the multi-generational crime drama. Deadline reports that Mendes will play the robber's love interest and mother of his child while Gerwig would play the politician's wife. Filming begins next month.

Mendes recently co-starred in The Other Guys and Last Night. She was in the running for the remake of Total Recall, but I think missing out on that film to do this one is a positive outcome. As for Gerwig, she's set to star opposite Joel Kinnaman in the indie romantic comedy Lola Versus.

Sony Pictures has offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake. Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, and Jessica Biel have each read for the part of Lori. This is the first time Beckinsale has been linked to the film, though her involvement is no surprise: Beckinsale is slightly married to the director, Len Wiseman. They previously collaborated on the Underworld movies.

If Beckinsale accepts, Biel has a backup; early reports suggested the actress is after the role of Melina. Yet that may prove yet another dead end for Ms. Biel. Deadline hears Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are "the serious contenders" for the role. Bryan Cranston is confirmed to play villain Vilos Cohaagen in the remake. Read more on the story after the jump.

Here is the synopsis for the 1990 Total Recall, loosely based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale":

Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a 21st-century construction worker who discovers that his entire memory of the past derives from a memory chip implanted in his brain. Schwarzenegger learns that he's actually a secret agent who had become a threat to the government, so those in power planted the chip and invented a domestic lifestyle for him. Once he has realized his true identity, he travels to Mars to piece together the rest of his identity, as well as to find the man responsible for his implanted memory. [AMC]

Doug Liman first set up Luna with Jake Gyllenhaal at DreamWorks in 2007, then with Paramount, then put it on hold for a couple years to direct Jumper and Fair Game. Liman was actively working on a Three Musketeers adaptation before Paul W.S. Anderson beat him to the punch. So he turned his attention to All You Need Is Kill, a spec sci-fi script with plenty of heat behind it. However, All You Need Is Kill has reportedly lost steam, and Liman has returned his focus to Luna (now "Untitled Moon Project"). But Gyllenhaal has since moved on, so Liman is meeting with a bevy of young Hollywood stars to fill the role. Heat Vision indicates the director has already spoken with Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes, Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde, Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch, and Chris Pine, and plans to meet with more names in the coming week.

Details on the project after the break.

Heat Vision provides this synopsis:
The story centers on a renegade group of former space employees, led by an Eastern European woman, who travel the world, stealing space equipment in an attempt to go back to the moon to acquire an energy source. The last item to steal -- or in this case, kidnap -- is an ex-NASA employee.

Now that Len Wiseman's remake of Total Recall has Colin Farrell in the role originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 Paul Verhoeven film, the film is casting for the lead female roles. For those who haven't seen the original film, the two lead female roles are Douglas Quaid's (Farrell) wife Lori (played in the original film by Sharon Stone) and the other is Martian freedom fighter Melina (originally played by Rachel Ticotin).

Deadline reports that Diane Kruger and Kate Bosworth have read for the role of Lori; Paula Patton, Jessica Biel, and Eva Green have read for Melina, and Eva Mendes has read for both roles. Hit the jump for my thoughts on the casting. Total Recall is set to open on August 3, 2012.

I don't have much of an opinion on who should play Melina (the only actress I don't like among the names being mentioned is Biel, who seems better suited for Lori), but I think of the actresses reading for Lori, Bosworth should get the gig.

[spoiler alert for those who haven't seen the original film]

The whole point of Lori is that you would never suspect a sweet homemaker is actually a trained assassin. Both Kruger and Mendes give the impression that they could kick some serious ass, but Bosworth has a softness to her that would make the reveal of her murderous ways far more shocking and impressive.

Of course, this is all assuming that the characters are basically the same as the ones in the original ...
