Hoping to hop on the apocalyptic bandwagon that will surely never get annoying in 2012, Sony Pictures has entered into negotiations to finance and distribute The Apocalypse, an end of days comedy marking the directorial debut of Seth Rogen. Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from a story by Jason Stone, the pic was inspired by a short film called Jay and Seth vs The Apocalypse. In it, Rogen and Jay Baruchel play their real life selves while they ride out the end of the world in their apartment. Since two movie stars cooped up during Armageddon clearly isn’t enough, the project has expanded to include James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson now residing in Franco’s (presumably larger?) Los Angeles apartment. We previously reported that the pic would start shooting in February, but it looks as if that will be pushed back until spring. Hit the jump for more on The Apocalypse.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel had decided to add many more cast members to their post-apocalyptic comedy Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse. The actor was remiss to reveal just who else would be joining the duo, but today he apparently decided was a good day to disclose that information. Rogen confirmed that Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson will also be starring in the flick. Rogen wrote the film with his Superbad writing partner Evan Goldberg, and the duo are set to make their directorial debut with the project (which is now shaping up to be the Valentine’s Day of Apatowian comedies, except with way less suckage). Hit the jump for more, including who won’t be starring in the film.

Seth Rogen Confirms He’s Not in THIS IS FORTY, Says JAY AND SETH VS. THE APOCALYPSE Starts Shooting in February

Judd Apatow is currently deep into production on his Knocked Up spinoff tentatively titled This is Forty. While the film focuses on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters from the 2009 comedy, many wonder which other characters would be popping up in the pseudo-sequel. Charlyne Yi and Jason Segel are both confirmed to appear, but Seth Rogen recently revealed that his character doesn’t show up in the film:

“Yeah I’m not in it, but I went to visit the set and it looked hilarious. It was a good choice, honestly, because I think it would’ve confused people. I’m really looking forward to seeing it; I thought the script was unbelievably funny.”

While it could’ve been cool to see where Rogen’s character is now in relation to Rudd and Mann, it’s not like the actor is dire need of projects. In fact, Rogen also revealed that a long-gestating project set to be his directorial debut, Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse, is actually gearing up to start shooting in February. Hit the jump for more.

Seth Rogen and Zac Efron Team Up for R-Rated Comedy at Universal

Seth Rogen and Zac Efron are now attached to star in an untitled comedy scripted by Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien (producers on Funny People).  The writers sold the R-rated pitch — described as similar in tone to Old School — to Universal tonight following a bidding war.  Things reportedly came down to Universal and New Line.  Universal paid a steep price to acquire the Rogen/Efron package: Cohen and O’Brien will earn 7 figures and Rogen will net more than $8 million as star/producer.  Evan Goldberg (The Green Hornet) will produce with Rogen through their company Point Grey Pictures.

According to Deadline, Rogen will play “a regular guy who lives near an alpha male fraternity house.”  Efron will play “a member of the fraternity, whose raucous behavior wreaks havoc on the other guy’s family life.”  It’s definitely not the most obvious pairing.  You could think of that as Rogen’s M.O. after Pineapple Express and The Green Hornet.  (Or I may be reaching.)  Ideally, the filmmakers can capitalize on the contrast, especially since both stars appear to be playing against type.  I will always root for a movie created by a fellow Brendan.

Director Jonathan Levine (The Wackness) will reunite with scribe Will Reiser on the vacation-based comedy entitled Jamaica. Per their own press release, Mandate Pictures will fast-track the development of Jamaica with Levine attached to direct, Reiser writing/executive producing, and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg co-producing the pic through their Point Grey Pictures moniker. According to the release, Jamaica is based loosely on a trip Reiser took with his grandmother at the age of 14.

All four of the previously mentioned gentlemen participated in identical capacities for the upcoming dramedy 50/50 which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anjelica Huston, and Rogen. The film is based on Reiser’s own battle with a rare form of cancer and is set to hit theaters later this year on September 30th. Click here to check out the trailer for 50/50.

Vince Vaughn Reunites with Ben Stiller for Akiva Schaffer’s NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Vince Vaughn will reunite with Ben Stiller in Akiva Schaffer’s sci-fi comedy Neighborhood Watch.  According to THR, the plot revolves around a group of suburban dads that use a “neighborhood watch” as a cover to get some away-time from their families.  However, the ruse becomes complicated when the group uncovers a plan to destroy the world.  I will start praying that Vaughn and Stiller don’t reprise their roles as Fast-Talking-Wiseguy-Who-Gets-Humiliated and Timid-Neurotic-Guy, respectively.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the most recent draft of the script.  Vaughn recently signed on to co-star in Lay the Favorite and he’s circling the comedies 2 Guns and Insane Laws.  The actor was recently seen in Ron Howard’s The Dilemma playing Fast-Talking-Wiseguy-Who-Gets-Humiliated.

Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand have signed on to star in Paramount’s road-trip comedy My Mother’s Curse.  Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct the Dan Fogelman (Cars) script which pairs Rogen and the two-time Oscar-winner as mother and son.  Per THR, Fogelman’s script tells the story of an inventor (Rogen) who “invites his mother on a cross-country road trip as he tries to sell his new product.”  As the story goes, in the process, Streisand’s character is also reunited with a lost love.

In addition to starring and writing respectively, Rogen, Streisand, and Fogelman will act as executive producers on My Mother’s Curse alongside fellow exec. producer David Ellison.  Lorne Michaels and Evan Goldberg will also act as producers on the film which is scheduled to begin shooting this spring.

Evan Goldberg Exclusive Interview; Covers THE GREEN HORNET, SAUSAGE PARTY, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, and His Untitled Cancer Dramedy

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 18th, 2011 at 7:47 am

With The Green Hornet currently the number one movie in America, it’s time to post the final interview I got to do at the press junket and it’s with co-writer and executive producer Evan Goldberg.  While Seth Rogen gets a lot credit for Superbad and Pineapple Express, both were co-written and executive produced by Evan Goldberg.  He’s Rogen’s partner in crime and a major component in his success.

Anyway, what’s great about talking with Goldberg is that he’s brutally honest.  When I asked him about the online buzz for Green Hornet, he didn’t shy away from talking about it.  In addition, we also talked about what Sally Menke did on the film before she died, deleted scenes, what changed by doing test screenings, what are his motivations right now for making future decisions, and I got updates on future projects like Sausage Party, Neighborhood Watch, his Untitled Cancer Dramedy (previously called Live With It and I’m With Cancer), and a lot more.  If you’re a fan of any of the projects I mentioned, I think you’ll really enjoy the interview.  You can either watch the video or read a transcript after the jump:

THE GREEN HORNET Review

Green-Hornet-movie-image-seth-rogen slice

Last year on our podcast, Running Dialogue, /Film’s Russ Fischer described Iron Man 2 as a “happy drunk”, which was a fitting description for the sloppy, yet joyful superhero movie.  I would like to steal his phrase and begrudgingly give him credit as I think Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet is a happy drunk as well as a happy stoner and at times a happy cokehead.  The film is colorful, vibrant, and has enough of Gondry’s stylistic flourishes without becoming oppressively whimsical.  Even when the film starts to drag or the plot becomes muddled and we’re forced to spend time with underdeveloped characters, Seth Rogen’s infectious enthusiasm keeps the mood of the picture light and fun even though his character is an unethical, egotistical jerk.  The Green Hornet is a film that succeeds in spite of itself and it’s a happy drunk that won’t leave you with too much of a hangover (despite the unnecessary 3D).

New Featurette for THE GREEN HORNET

Seth Rogen Evan Goldberg On Set Interview THE GREEN HORNET slice

Sony has released a new featurette for Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet.  If you’re asking how can Seth Rogen be an action hero, this featurette tries to explain it.  As you’ll see after the jump, the featurette has footage from the movie mixed with interviews with Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Cameron Diaz.  They explain how The Green Hornet is a twist on the superhero genre since it’s the sidekick who does most of the fighting.

I caught an early screening of the film and liked it a lot.  While there was some bad buzz online awhile ago, I promise you the film is much better than you think it is and it’s definitely going to surprise you.  Not only does The Green Hornet feature a number of impressive action scenes, it’s really funny.  Hit the jump for the new featurette and expect a number of new interviews as we get closer to release.

The upcoming Pete Segal-directed Neighborhood Watch will undergo a re-write by none other than Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (far right, above), who previously penned behind such hits as Pineapple Express and Superbad.   According to Heat Vision, the story “concerns a suburban ‘neighborhood watch’ group, which is actually a front for dads to get some male bonding time away from the family. Things go awry when the group accidentally uncovers a plot bent on destroying the world.”  Hit the jump for more on the project.

Here goes my best shot at getting everyone up to speed on the indie hockey comedy Goon via a ton of info that may or may not be news to your ears.  For starters, Liev Schreiber and Alison Pill have joined the film.  While Schreiber’s role is unknown as of now, Pill will play the female lead.  Additionally, Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, and Marc-Andre Grondin have landed roles as well.  According to THR, Goon tells the story of “Doug Glatt, a bouncer (Scott) who has been touched by the fist of God. Upon discovering both his right hook and skates, he joins a downtrodden hockey team and inspires them into new heights.”  That in mind, Baruchel will play Scott’s best friend whereas Grondin will play a French-Canadian hockey star.

Goon was written by Baruchel and Evan Goldberg with Michael Dowse directing.  For more info on the film, including Baruchel’s own description, hit the jump.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg On Set Interview THE GREEN HORNET

Seth Rogen Evan Goldberg On Set Interview THE GREEN HORNET slice

Seth Rogen is good at shooting the proverbial poop. When we were on the set of The Green Hornet, he came over while they were setting up and gave us some time, and then came over again for a little off the record back and forth, and then sat down with his writing partner Evan Goldberg to talk some more. He can be deemed affable.

Green Hornet has had a fascinating and troubled production history.  The project picked up some heat when Kevin Smith was attached to write and direct it around 2004, but then Smith decided he couldn’t do it with the oomph it required, and so the project spent a number of years in development hell. That’s when Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg came aboard after their success with Superbad and The Pineapple Express, and it looked like a go project. Things seemed even more promising when Stephen Chow was attached to both co-star and direct. But Chow then left the project, and the film looked in peril as it struggled to replace him, and Nicholas Cage was briefly attached to play the bad guy, but as a faux-Jamaican baddie. The shuffling cast gave off a warning sign, and when word dried up the film was declared dead by a number of sites. But then the pieces came into place: Michel Gondry would direct with Jay Chou as Kato and Inglorious Basterds‘s Christoph Waltz as the bad guy. The results are scheduled to be released on January 14, 2011.

So even with a number of moments with Rogen, there was much to discuss about how he and Evan came about writing and re-writing the script, what it was like trying to avoid falling into parody, and the relationship between Kato and The Green Hornet. Our conversation with Rogen and Goldberg after the jump.

Christoph Waltz On Set Interview THE GREEN HORNET

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: July 13th, 2010 at 9:02 am

Christoph Waltz THE GREEN HORNET image slice

On the Set of The Green Hornet, everyone knew that Christoph Waltz was going to be an academy award winner, but – in December of 2009 – he had yet to be nominated. His performance was just that good. It was undeniable. But at that point Waltz had just started getting work from the heat of that performance, and so in some respects – even with a body of work that spans decades – he was a newcomer. An irony Waltz himself appreciated. The Green Hornet role came from Inglourious Basterds, and as Rogen said he thanked Tarantino for the gift his film had been given.

Christoph wasn’t shooting that day, but came to the set to talk to us, regardless, which is a great show of professionalism. With Waltz, he had to keep some secrets so he daintly danced around some probing questions about his character, and talked about making the film, Basterds, the award season, his newfound celebrity, and more. My interview with Christoph Waltz after the jump.

Seth Rogen, Director Michel Gondry, Evan Goldberg and Producer Neal Moritz Interview GREEN HORNET

Earlier tonight Sony invited 10 online reporters to watch the new trailer for Green Hornet at Mann’s Chinese in Hollywood and then do a Q&A with Seth Rogen, Director Michel Gondry, Evan Goldberg and Producer Neal Moritz.  Following the Q&A, we were escorted across the street to Jimmy Kimmel Live, as Rogen was going on tonight’s episode to premiere the trailer.  Well, that was the plan.

It ends up the power went out at Jimmy Kimmel Live, so it looks like tonight’s episode will air tomorrow night, which is just par for the course on Green Hornet.  Thankfully, the Q&A was really informative and surprisingly engaging, but it’s probably due to the great group of reporters Sony had assembled to ask questions.  So if you’d like to know a lot more about Green Hornet, hit the jump:
