Opening this weekend is director Tom Vaughan’s (Starter for 10, What Happens in Vegas) Extraordinary Measures.  The movie is the first release from CBS Films and it’s inspired by the true story of John Crowley – someone who risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease.  Playing Crowley is Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford stars as the brilliant but unconventional scientist who Crowley teams up with.

To help promote the film, I recently got to speak with Brendan Fraser.  We talked about how he got involved with the project, working with Harrison Ford, did he prepare for the film any differently as he was playing a real person, and what did he think about Avatar (has to do with a Journey to the Center of the Earth question).  Check out the interview after the jump:

Extraordinary Measures is inspired by the true story of John Crowley (Brendan Fraser), a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease. Directed by Tom Vaughan in the tradition of great inspirational dramas like the Academy Award nominated film Erin Brockovich and The Pursuit of Happyness, Extraordinary Measures is the first film to go into production for CBS films.

Supported by his wife Aileen (Keri Russell) and their three children, Crowley (Brendan Fraser) is on the fast track in corporate America. But just as his career is taking off, Crowley walks away from it all when his two youngest children, Megan and Patrick, are diagnosed with a fatal disease. Harnessing all of his skill and determination, Crowley teams up with a brilliant, but unappreciated and unconventional scientist, Dr. Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford).

Last week, Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford (who also served as the film’s Executive Producer) talked to journalists in Los Angeles about the development process, researching their characters, and why this film was important in terms of raising awareness about a devastating disease. Having played iconic characters in huge franchises, they touched on what it was like to play ordinary people for a change attempting to do extraordinary things. They also promised to get back to us on which franchise was better:  Indiana Jones or The Mummy.

Trailer and Posters for EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES Starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser

Not to be confused with Extreme Measure, Extraordinary Measures is the heartwarming tale of a father who risked it all to save his kids as opposed to Extreme Measures where Gene Hackman kills homeless people to cure paralysis.  Fraser plays a father whose kids are sick so he spends whatever he has to so a brilliant/eccentric scientist played by Harrison Ford can develop a cure before the kids die.  No harmless are harmed in the making of this cure.

The trailer and two posters for the film have arrived online and they’re both slightly confusing.  In the trailer, folks keep treating Fraser like he’s crazy to spend so much money and push this scientist to develop a cure for the rare illness.  Obviously, the far more sensible thing to do is let his kids perish.  It will hurt for the rest of his life but think of the savings!  As for the posters, one shows Fraser and Ford as a Venn Diagram while the other shows the two modeling the suits they just bought at the Men’s Wearhouse (and they like the way the look). Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the posters.  Extraordinary Measures hits theaters on January 22, 2010.

First Image and Featurette from EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES Starring Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell

CBS Films has sent over the first image and a first look featurette from director Tom Vaughan’s (“Starter for 10,” “What Happens in Vegas”) “Extraordinary Measures”. The film stars Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell and it’s inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease. While the featurette is mostly the real John Crowley talking about his story, at the end Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser say a few words. While this kind of movie might not appeal to all of you, with the cast involved, I thought it was worth sharing. I’m hoping with Tom Vaughan directing it’ll be more than a movie of the week. Take a look at the image and featurette after the jump. “Extraordinary Measures” gets released March 19, 2010.
