Mark Heyman (Black Swan) had so much success with his last creepy/obsessive/possibly insane protagonist that the scribe is returning to familiar territory with his latest script. Heyman is currently circulating a “Facebook stalker” pic entitled XOXO around several Hollywood genres labels with Darren Aronofsky set to produce. Per 24 Frames, the script centers on a twentysomething male whose digital relationship with a female peer takes a turn from “Wow, this online dating thing is really cool” to “Wow, thanks to this online dating thing I now have a stalker.”
The report also claims that XOXO will not exist solely on Facebook but will make use of streaming video and other social media platforms as well so as to create a digital world that acts as an extension of the physical one (sound familiar?). In addition to XOXO, Heyman is also writing a teen-centric apocalyptic tale for director Marc Webb entitled Age of Rage. Moreover, he’s also developing a project called Machine Man which is described as being in the vein of Robocop as it centers on a man who undergoes a titanium body upgrade and becomes a target as a result.

Less than a month after making The Dark Knight available for rental via Facebook, Warner Bros. has added five more of their movies to the social networking site. The studio has announced via press release that Facebook users can now rent Inception, Life as We Know It, Yogi Bear, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Make no mistake: other studios are watching this experiment closely and seeing how popular it becomes. The real trick for Warner Bros. and for Facebook is working to get these movies out of browsers and onto other platforms like video game consoles, Roku, mobile devices, etc.
Hit the jump for the full press release.

Warner Bros. plans to begin streaming its movies through Facebook. Facebook users will be able to rent and stream movies by spending Facebook credits and the studio plans to expand the program in the future to include purchasing as well as renting. The first film available to watch via this new streaming service is The Dark Knight, which will cost you 30 credits (i.e. $3, but of course Facebook has its own currency). More titles will become available for rental and purchase in the coming months.
While it’s impressive that WB has found yet another revenue stream (they recently released “App Editions” of The Dark Knight and Inception and they’re launching a premium video-on-demand service in the coming months), the real story is Facebook. We’re looking at the birth of yet another online competitor in the digital distribution world. Consider how many platforms Facebook has for users to browse their site. Now consider those platforms also allow you to rent and purchase movies through Facebook and you can see why this is a big deal. While the service is currently only available via browser, I would expect it to eventually expand to mobile phones, Xbox 360, etc. Hit the jump to check out the press release.

Just when you thought the video game adaptation trend couldn’t get any lower, Hollywood has put a hit out on the Facebook game Mafia Wars. Pajiba reports that the logline, “crime thriller based on the popular video game.” Before you say “Well, no shit,” you should know that the project is currently out to writers. I have a feeling this will just turn out (provided it makes it all the way to the screen) as “Mafia Movie #5,789″
Mafia Wars, according to Wikipedia, “The game revolves around doing and mastering jobs to earn cash and experience, with the goal of establishing and advancing one’s criminal empire. Players create mafias by recruiting players via social networking sites such as Facebook and build their mafia and fight against other players. Players can also improve their stats by visiting the Godfather (ie, making a micropayment). On Facebook, as of October 2009, Mafia Wars has 25.9 million monthly active accounts.” And the sad thing is, you know Farmville has to be coming. It has over 82.4 million active users as of May 2010. If/when that happens, I will be forced to buy this shirt.

At the premiere of A Nightmare on Elm Street, I managed to get some time with Rooney Mara. Since I’ve recently spoke to her at the Los Angeles press junket and at WonderCon for Nightmare, I decided to use my limited time on the carpet to talk about her next film: David Fincher’s The Social Network.
Written by Aaron Sorkin, the film is about the origins of Facebook. Mara plays the one who breaks up with Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) and that inspires him to start the site. During the interview she talks about her character, what it was like to work for Fincher, and how much time did she spend picking out her dress. Hit the jump to check out the interview:

While last night’s South Park couldn’t top last week’s episode (and let’s be honest-not much can), they still got in some good commentary on the addicting power of Facebook. In the episode, Stan is forced into using Facebook because everyone else using it. These are the best kind of Stan episodes: where he’s the only sane voice and everyone else is acting like a dumbass (my favorite instance of this is the episode, “The Biggest Douche in the Universe“).
Hit the jump for more details on the episode plus a couple of clips.

Above you will see the new banner for Disney’s upcoming 3D action flick Tron Legacy and like the previous marketing we’ve seen for the film, it looks very, very cool. The banner was originally released to ten lucky Tron Legacy Facebook fans who won the Tron Legacy Facebook contest we told you about last week, but now we all get to enjoy it. My only question about the banner is why did they leave out the word “Legacy”? Hopefully folks looking at this online will understand it’s a sequel and not a 3D remake of the original.
For those just tuning in, here’s the official synopsis:
TRON is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (GARRETT HEDLUND), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (JEFF BRIDGES), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (OLIVIA WILDE), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

Despite his ongoing legal drama, Roman Polanski will get his new movie The Ghost Writer out to audiences as Summit Entertainment has picked up the film for distribution. While the film sadly does not chart Johnny Blaze’s attempts at being an author, it has a strong synopsis:
The movie thriller tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghost writer is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang’s wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams) and his aide (Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations. The cast also includes Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh and Tom Wilkinson.
Summit plans to release the film in the first half of 2010. However, I still can’t get over Jim Belushi in a Roman Polanski movie. It just doesn’t compute.
I can, however, make some more sense out of Tron Legacy attempting to draw in more Facebook fans by offering ten lucky folks a look at a new image from the film. While we got a sweet new image last week along with a nice teaser poster, I’m hoping that one of the ten folks who gets the new image is a fan of Collider and wouldn’t mind sharing. Click over to the film’s official Facebook page to become a fan. Tron Legacy hits theaters on December 17, 2010.

The attempt to make sure every man, woman, and child knows about James Cameron’s Avatar continues as MTV will host a live webcast of a roundtable discussion with Cameron, stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, and producer Jon Landau. Variety reports that MTV News managing editor Josh Horowitz will moderate the 30-minute event, which will feature unseen footage from the movie. The webcast will also be shown on the official Avatar Facebook page and fans will be able to submit questions to either site.
MTV will broadcast the event on December 3rd in preparation for their half-hour special on Avatar on December 16th. Avatar will hit theaters in 2D, 3D, and 3D IMAX on December 18th. Hit the jump to read a full synopsis on the film. No word yet if 20th Century Fox plans to market the film in our food and drinking water.

Opening this Friday is director Roland Emmerich’s 2012. As most of you have seen in commercials and trailers, 2012 is about a global cataclysm that causes massive destruction to our planet. If you’re keeping count, this is Emmerich’s third time blowing up our planet (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) and I think he’s learned from his previous efforts to deliver his biggest spectacle yet. Trust me, this movie is loaded with some of the craziest special effects you’ll see this year and if you want to have some fun, grab a popcorn and soda and hit a theater this weekend.
To help promote the film, our partners at Omelete were invited to the international press day and they sent me to cover it. So after the jump you can watch my interview with American Idol runner up Adam Lambert. He provided a song for the film. During my interview we talked about nail polish, Twitter and Facebook, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, making his first record, and a lot more. Take a look:

David Fincher’s “The Social Network” has now found its cast. According to a rumor that popped up on Facebook itself, Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Meanwhile, Andrew Garfield will play Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. The big surprise though, at least to me, is that Justin Timberlake has also supposedly been cast as the internet entrepreneur who was behind Napster, Sean Parker. You can read some more about “The Social Network” when you hit the jump.

Disney has released five character posters for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and while they use previously released images, they’re still not bad to look at and I hope they’ll be available to Comic-Con attendees. If not, they’re probably already decorating your local multiplex.
And if you’re jazzed for this film, there’s an opportunity for you to see the teaser trailer for the film even if you’re not attending Comic-Con. Find out how after the jump and to see the new posters.
Because Aaron Sorkin writing a movie about Facebook wasn’t crazy enough, Variety is now reporting that David Fincher is in talks to direct, “The Social Network” which is about the formation of the popular social networking site where you discover which you can learn which dead child star is most like your friend and that being a fan of a property means that you’re entitled to not only advertising regarding that product, but advertising towards everything even remotely related to the one thing you wanted to support in the first place.
It’s hard to ignore the combination of talent that Sorkin and Fincher would provide despite the premise which isn’t even so much a premise as it is a modern phenomenon that Columbia Pictures wants to make into a movie. To simply have it be, as Variety reports, the story of how Mark Zuckerberg created the site in his sophmore year at Harvard, may not be enough. But for minds like David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin, it may turn out to be more than enough.
