ELF: ULTIMATE COLLECTOR’S EDITION Blu-ray Review

There are literally hundreds of Christmas films lingering on the shelves of video stores around the world. Most of them are junk – forgettable slapstick fare involving goofy people doing goofy things in the name of goofiness – yet every now and again one jumps out and has enough allure to end up a perennial holiday favorite (check out Collider’s list of Top 10 Christmas flicks if you haven’t already).

Such is the case with Jon Favreau’s 2003 Elf, an otherwise forgettable film if not for Will Ferrell’s sugar-high, candy coated, even inspired performance. The former SNL-star does his damndest to ensure an enjoyable comedy experience, yet obtrudes the film in a way that makes it impossible to enjoy unless you find his overtly rambunctious humor amusing. Personally, I think the man is a god – Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) remains one of the great comedies – capable of squeezing hilarity from even the most rudimentary of circumstances, and so my opinion is a biased one. Still, I can see how Ferrell’s brand of humor may turn off some; I understand why people get annoyed when he strips naked (far too often) and screams obscenities with high pitched fury. But you have to admit, the man takes chances – sometimes his method works, sometimes it doesn’t.  Continued after the jump:

COUPLES RETREAT Review

“Couples Retreat” is the most vanilla kind of comedy you can find in a non-family film.  Its “edgy” jokes are tired to the point of a coma, it provides no challenge to its cast, and every minute of the movie feels four times as long as none of the four couples have any resonance or complication that can’t be overcome with a nice heart-to-heart.  On top of all that you have product placement so tacky and completely without irony that I feel a more appropriate title would be “Guitar Hero and Applebee’s Present Couples Retreat”. Faizon Love and Kali Hawk Couples Retreat.jpg

The last few weeks have seen Universal promoting the hell out of “Couples Retreat”. They’ve flown a lot of press to Bora Bora, they’ve had the cast in Australia, and they’ve even done press in Los Angeles for many international territories. Thankfully, our partners at Omelete were invited to the international press day, and they sent me to talk with the cast. So after the jump you can see my interview with Faizon Love and Kali Hawk. In the film, Faizon plays one of the guys in a large group of friends. His story is that he recently got separated from his wife and he’s hooked with a much younger girl, played by Kali Hawk. During our interview they talk about filming in Bora Bora, working with the rest of the actors, Kali tells a great story about getting cast, and they talk about what’s coming up. Take a look:

COUPLES RETREAT Trailer – Starring Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman, and Jason Bateman

I usually don’t put a lot of weight towards the MPAA ratings but after watching this trailer for “Couples Retreat”, I need to know whether or not this film is PG-13 or R.  If it’s PG-13, I’m afraid we’re looking at a fairly toothless relationship comedy where the guys like Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, and Faizon Love are pulling their punches.

If it’s an R-rated comedy, I think we may have something look forward to.  Also, they’ve got some funny ladies in the cast and I hope we get to see more of their comedic talents than we do here. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. “Couples Retreat” hits theatres on October 9th.

Adam Sandler, Cher, Judd Apatow, Jon Favreau, and Sylvester Stallone Speak for THE ZOOKEEPER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 22nd, 2009 at 9:03 pm

adam_sandler_happy_gilmore_movie_image_with_bob_barker.jpgWhen I read previous log-lines for Kevin James and Rosario Dawson’s upcoming “comedy”, “The Zookeeper”, I didn’t know the animals actually talked.  I was under the impression that the premise of “animals teaching their caretaker methods of dating and mating” was to be done through body language and skillful editing.

But because the premise of having a guy like Kevin James win over a woman like Rosario Dawson through the help of zoo animals isn’t outlandish enough, the animals actually talk.  With celebrity voices.  There will come a day when we will no long be able to devise an exaggerated parody of Hollywood product and that day will most likely be the one when “The Zookeeper” hits theatres.

According to Variety, the following celebrities either need money/want to be in a film their kids can enjoy/hate you: Adam Sandler, Cher, Jon Favreau, Sylvester Stallone and Judd Apatow.  Nick Nolte, Jim Breuer, Faizon Love and Bas Rutten are also in negotations to join with Nolte voicing a gorilla.  Nolte will not be aware of his participation in the film but rather, someone will just follow him around with a tape recorder and edit accordingly.

With this soul-crushing news, the most we can hope for now is that during filming, Kevin James is eaten by one of the animals which will be by far the funniest thing James ever did in his career.
