What may be most shocking about the 2009 remake of Fame is that it really is a remake. And with the release of both the 1980 original and remake now on Blu-ray, a quick compare and contrast can be done. Both films follow a group of students (in 1980, Maureen Teefy, Irene Cara, Paul McCrane, and Barry Miller are the stand outs, in 2009, it’s Kay Panabaker, Naturi Naughton, Walter Perez, and Paul Iacono) through their four years at a prestigious New York performance arts school where they learn to act, sing and dance. My Reviews of both versions of Fame after the jump.

MGM, the studio of The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Singin’ in the Rain and many other classic films, is expected to be headed to the auction block where its library and logo may go to the highest bidder. The financially troubled company will manage to hold on to Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of The Hobbit, but it’s pretty much anything goes for the 85-year-old company. Hit the jump for more about who would want to own a constantly growling lion.

Despite mounting an early and aggressive advertising campaign for their high-concept sci-fi thriller “Surrogates”, Disney could not catch up to Sony’s holdover hit “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” in time to claim the number one spot on the charts. After opening up a small lead on Friday, the 3D animated toon finished with another $24 million on its second weekend, making it easily the most-successful release of the month at $60 million in total. September had more bad news for its new releases as both MGM’s reboot of “Fame” and Overture’s sci-fi horror flick “Pandorum” struggled to find their footing. Ha! Get it? The dancers of “Fame” couldn’t find their footing! More witty bon mots after the jump.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Cloudy w/a Chance… | $24,600,000 | $60,036,000 |
| 2 | Surrogates | $15,000,000 | $15,000,000 |
| 3 | Fame | $10,000,000 | $10,000,000 |

| 5 | I Can Do Bad… | $4,750,000 | $44,543,000 |
| 6 | Pandorum | $4,408,000 | $4,408,000 |
| 7 | Love Happens | $4,327,000 | $14,728,000 |
| 8 | Jennifer’s Body | $3,500,000 | $12,306,000 |
| 9 | 9 | $2,832,000 | $27,101,000 |

Audiences haven’t tired of the 3D toon “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” quite yet. Sony Animation’s demographically-appealing feature film brought in another $5.2 million on its eighth day out: a decline of only 31% from its number one debut last Friday. This means that a second weekend at the top of the box office is now likely. The film that was supposed to take over that number one spot, Disney’s sci-fi thriller “Surrogates”, was not far behind “Meatballs” with an estimated $5 million from its 2,951 dates. But if Bruce Willis was going to stage a coup he would have had to make his move before the more kid-centric Saturday session. Meanwhile, more bad news for MGM as their first feature release of 2009, “Fame”, registered a debut of only $3.5 million from its 3,096 engagements. Check back tomorrow to see how fall’s first weekend at the movies plays out.
| Title | Friday | Total | |

| 3 | Fame | $3,550,000 | $3,550,000 |

When director Kevin Tancharoen’s reboot/reimagining/update of “Fame” was filming in Los Angeles last year, I was invited to the set to watch some filming and interview most of the cast. While Collider gets invited to a lot of set visits, this one was special because I was allowed to do all my interviews on camera. What that means is, instead of reading a transcript and listening to the audio, you can get to watch how excited everyone was to be making “Fame”. So if you’d like to see Paul Iacono, Kay Panabaker, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, Naturi Naughton, Asher Book and Collins Pennie on set talking about making “Fame” and a lot more, hit the jump. Remember, “Fame” hits theaters this weekend.

Opening September 25th is the remake/reboot/reinvention of the hit 1980 movie “Fame”. The new one is similar to the original as it follows a group of dancers, singers, actors, and artists over four years at the New York City High School of Performing Arts. The cast is made up of mostly unknowns and it’s directed by Kevin Tancharoen – who is making his feature debut. While the production was filming in Los Angeles last year, I did a set visit and my video interviews with the cast will be online next week. So until then, we’ve been given 8 clips from the movie and you can watch them all after the jump:
MGM has just released a new trailer for the remake of “Fame” and it’s after the jump. Unlike the first teaser trailer, this one has footage from the movie and you can see Kelsey Grammer and some of the other teachers giving the kids advice.
As I wrote previously, I went to the set of “Fame” when they were filming here in Los Angeles and thought the movie had a lot of promise. All the actors were excited to be there and their enthusiasm was evident on set. Also, the film is all about the music, and what I heard sounded great. In fact, the end of this new trailer features some of what I heard.
Take a look after the jump. “Fame” arrives in theaters September 25th.
