As we approach the release of the sixth film in the Fast and Furious franchise, it’s a bit crazy to think that the series is actually at the top of its game this far in.  The worldwide box office total of 2011’s Fast Five doubled that of the second-highest grossing entry in the series, Fast & Furious, and now director Justin Lin’s Fast & Furious 6 is poised to be one of the biggest films of a very crowded summer.

Steve recently spoke with producer Neal Moritz for an extended interview, and during their conversation he talked extensively about what fans can expect from Fast & Furious 6 as well as the progress on the very fast-moving Fast & Furious 7, which was recently announced for a summer 2014 release.  Moritz confirmed that James Wan will be directing the next installment and talked about why they chose the Saw director to step into the franchise, and he also assured us that Dwayne Johnson will indeed be returning.  Hit the jump for much, much more.

Earlier this week, Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin confirmed that he would not be returning to helm a seventh installment of the high-octane franchise.  Though the sixth entry has yet to hit theaters, star Vin Diesel has suggested that production on the next film could start shooting as early as this summer, meaning that Universal needs to find a new director ASAP.  While there are likely plenty of takers for the job, three individuals have emerged at the top contenders: Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2), Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer), and Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid).  Hit the jump for more on each of the directors, as well as my pick for gig.

Justin Lin Won’t Direct FAST & FURIOUS 7; Universal Hoping for 2014 Release

Though Fast & Furious 6 doesn’t come out until next month, we’ve known for some time that Universal plans on moving forward with a seventh installment in the franchise.  Fast Five director Justin Lin initially mulled over the idea of shooting Fast 6 and 7 back-to-back, but instead opted to shoot the Europe-set Fast & Furious 6 separately.  Last week franchise star Vin Diesel suggested that filming on Fast & Furious 7 was set to get underway as early as this summer, and since that kind of schedule would necessitate a very quick turnaround from the cast and crew, most surmised that Lin would be returning as the director.

However, today word comes that Lin has decided not to direct Fast & Furious 7 after all, which would have marked his fifth film in the series.  Hit the jump for much more.

9 New Behind-the-Scenes Images from FAST & FURIOUS 6

fast and the furious 6 behind the scenes

With less than two months until its May 24, 2013 release on Memorial Day weekend, nine new high-resolution images from the upcoming Fast & Furious 6 were just revealed.  Director Justin Lin used this set of photos primarily to showcase the film’s cars, not to mention a few more shots of cast members.  One theme in both batches of released photos is what appears to be a high-speed chase involving a tank that has some sort of rigging built on the front.  Given the intensity of Fast Five’s stunts, which included an incredible train heist scenario, one can only wonder what Lin has up his sleeve with this tank scene. Additionally, riding on the success of its predecessor, Fast & Furious 6 will also have a broader action plot revolving more around heists and car chase sequences than around a street racing subculture.

For a look at the new pictures, shift to the jump.  Fast & Furious boasts a stacked action ensemble of Vin DieselPaul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Joe TaslimSung Kang, Gina Carano, and Luke Evans.

The spring is usually a dumping ground for studios, and while there were big misfires in spring 2013 like A Good Day to Die Hard and Jack the Giant Slayer, there were also some nice gems like Warm Bodies, Stoker, and the great The Place Beyond the Pines.  Now we move towards the heavy hitters of summer, and it’s tough to choose just five among the many choices headed our way.  Summer 2012 was a slog, but hope begins anew with summer 2013.

Vin Diesel Says FAST & FURIOUS 7 May Start Filming This Summer

When The Fast and the Furious was first released over a decade ago, it was hard to imagine that a movie about street racing would spawn a successful franchise that’s still going strong six films in.  And yet, 2011’s Fast Five proved that the series still has plenty of juice left, with director Justin Lin crafting one of the most entertaining movies of the year that packed in just about every single castmember from the entire Fast & Furious franchise.

The action moves across the pond to Europe with this May’s Fast & Furious 6, also directed by Lin, and it appears that the inevitable seventh installment of the franchise might be coming much sooner than expected as star Vin Diesel recently suggested that filming on Fast & Furious 7 begins this summer.  Hit the jump for more.

Ever since Dwayne Johnson first joined the cast of Justin Lin’s sequel Fast Five, there’s been talk of his Luke Hobbs character getting his own spinoff film.  Producer Neal Moritz said back in January of 2011 that they were “about to” get a script together for the Hobbs movie, and Johnson himself has been keen on the idea.  Johnson has a key role in this year’s Fast & Furious 6, as his DSS agent enlists Vin Diesel’s car-thieving crew to help him combat a rival team of thieves in Europe in return for Diesel and Co.’s full pardons.  Now Johnson has provided an update on the standalone Hobbs movie, suggesting it might come in between Fast 6 and the inevitable Fast & Furious 7.  Hit the jump for more.
