Twist endings are a tricky proposition. When executed successfully, they give the film a bravura finish that will have people talking for years to come. But that’s rare. More often than not, they leave the audience confused and frustrated. The Tourist is a charming albeit forgettable trifle of a film that chooses to throw an unnecessary and maddeningly stupid twist at the audience. It’s a twist ending that not only blows up in the movie’s face, but blows it’s face clean off, turning a pretty veneer into a mangled pile of “Are you kidding me?’ and “That makes no goddamned sense.”

With director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Tourist getting released next week, Sony has released 5 movie clips and 4 minutes of behind the scenes footage. So if you’re curious about the first on screen pairing of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, these clips should make you very happy. While the trailers haven’t done much to excite me, I’m still checking this film out opening weekend because like you…I want to see Depp and Jolie on screen together. Here’s the official synopsis:
Johnny Depp stars as an American tourist whose playful dalliance with a stranger leads to a web of intrigue, romance and danger in The Tourist. During an impromptu trip to Europe to mend a broken heart, Frank (Depp) unexpectedly finds himself in a flirtatious encounter with Elise (Angelina Jolie), an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Paris and Venice, their whirlwind romance quickly evolves as they find themselves unwittingly thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Not satisfied with utilizing trailers and posters to sell the movie, we now have the first interactions between Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s upcoming thriller The Tourist. The poster we revealed last month clearly showcased Depp and Jolie as the main selling point, and this clip seems to follow right in line with that. Instead of showing an action piece or something involving other characters (Paul Bettany and Timothy Dalton are in the film as well), we get this flirtatious interaction between the main characters. While I’m not completely sold on the film yet, I am intrigued by what is being held back and the fact that Christopher McQuarrie co-wrote the script. The Tourist hits theaters December 10th, and you can hit the jump to check out the clip for the film, complete with synopsis.

Sony has released a new poster for director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s (The Lives of Others) The Tourist. As most of you know, the film stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie and it was filmed on location in Venice.
While some posters can be considered high art and are the type to hang on your wall, the new poster for The Tourist is about one thing: letting you know Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are in this movie. It’s not trying to tell you what it’s about. It’s not trying to sell you on the action or drama. Instead, the poster just wants to let you know two of the biggest movie stars on the planet are together and in one movie. It’s smart marketing.
If The Tourist ends up being a great movie, Sony can start printing money now. Hit the jump to check out the poster:
The first theatrical trailer for The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie has gone online. Directed by Oscar winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others), the trailer more or less consists of Jolie being her typically seductive-self while Depp seems to be in trouble thanks to a classic case of mistaken identity. While I can’t say the trailer did a ton for me, I definitely enjoyed the music which sets up the film as more fun than serious. I also liked seeing Depp in more of a typical “every-man” role in exchange for what has seemingly become his expected “over-the-top” character work (i.e. Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd, etc.).

I’m always interested in an on-screen pairing ripe with both talent and star power that’s never been tapped before — Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp more than fit the bill in the Venice-set thriller The Tourist. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) is directing this tale of an American tourist (Depp) who is drawn into the tangled life of an Interpol agent (Jolie). Check out the first official still from the film after the jump.

For those who enjoy actors in-costume and out-of-character, Accidental Sexiness has new on-set images of Simon Pegg and Isla Fisher in John Landis’ Burke and Hare and Johnny Depp in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Tourist.
With Burke and Hare (based on the true story of two men in 19th century Edinburgh who committed murders for the money they made selling the cadavers to medical schools), Ms. Fisher is wearing a lovely blue dress with matching blue-bonnet. By her side is Mr. Pegg rocking a pair of muttonchops. Keep in mind, that muttonchops in the 21st century can not be worn or grown. They can only be rocked.
As for Mr. Depp in The Tourist (which is about an American tourist (Depp) drawn into a web of intrigue and danger by a female Interpol agent (Angelina Jolie) as she attempts to locate a criminal who was once her lover), he looks overjoyed to be filming by the Grand Canal in Venice.

Last October, The Lives of Others director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck came on board to direct The Tourist, which at the time starred Angelina Jolie and Sam Worthington. But a few weeks later, both Worthington and von Donnersmarck left the project over “creative differences.” In the same story, it was rumored that Johnny Depp would replace Worthington. Now, EW is reporting that von Donnersmarck is returning to direct (he must have found creative similarities), and confirmed that Depp will co-star with Jolie.
The Tourist is expected to begin filming this spring, but now that re-raises the question about how this affects Depp’s return to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. That film still seems to be adrift with no new announcements beyond taking the release date of May 20, 2011. But returning to von Donnersmarck, this is good news for The Tourist since The Lives of Others is a great flick. For those who don’t know the plot, Tourist is about an American tourist (Depp) drawn into a web of intrigue and danger by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) as she attempts to locate a criminal who was once her lover.

“The Tourist” just can’t seem to find a destination. The story–an American tourist drawn into a web of intrigue and danger by a female Interpol agent as she attempts to locate a criminal who was once her lover–originally starred Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron with directing by Bharat Nalluri (“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”). Then Cruise dropped out to co-star in “Knight and Day” (formerly “Witchita”) with Cameron Diaz. In his place came Sam Worthington. Then Theron split and Jolie came aboard. A week later, director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (“The Lives of Others”) joined the project.
But now Worthington and von Donnersmarck are both gone over the infamous “creative differences” and Johnny Depp is in talks to take Worthington’s role. And as for the director, many are scrapping for the gig, including Alfonso Cuaron. Hit the jump for more details.

Just to let you know, from this point forward if I ever have to name Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck in a headline again, he’s going to be FHvD. Make a note.
With that out of the way, I’m happy to report that von Donnersmarck will be making “The Tourist” his follow up to his Oscar-winning film, “The Lives of Others”. While the director hasn’t formally entered into negotiations, he is considered the top choice to helm the spy thriller which is expected to be Angelina Jolie’s next project. With the combo of Jolie, Sam Worthington as the male lead, and now von Donnersmarck as the director, “The Tourist” could begin filming this February for a 2011 release. Hit the jump for more details.
