MARS ATTACKS and FORBIDDEN PLANET Blu-ray Reviews

Tim Burton is a lightning rod director. He’s one of the rare film-makers who has a brand name to people who don’t necessarily love movies. He’s a selling point, and it’s not just his relationship with Johnny Depp. Tim Burton now also has a questionable artistic reputation, and it’s become nigh impossible to take him seriously after years of doing terrible for-hire projects. Mars Attacks can either be seen Burton in hack mode delivering his best of that sort, or it’s an actual personal effort that just doesn’t connect – watching it, it’s hard to call as either.

But though there are other films with a more direct reference point (Ray Harryhausen’s Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers for one), Forbidden Planet and its ideas of proper space travel are definitely within that sphere. Both films have hit Blu-ray. Producer Joel Silver on SPLICE, LOGAN’S RUN, SWAMP THING, THE APPARATION, PROJECT-X, UNKNOWN WHITE MALE

After seeing just one still of the movie in a trade paper, and then being sent the finished film, producer Joel Silver thought it was so effective that he ended up acquiring the rights to the horror feature Splice. Although he was always open to the possibility, acquiring an already-finished product was something he had never done before, under his Dark Castle banner.

While at the press day for the disturbing thriller, which stars Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody, the prolific producer also discussed a long list of other projects that he currently has in various stages, including Unknown White Male, The Apparition, The Factory and Project X.  He also talked about the disappointing box office for The Losers, his hopes to get Logan’s Run and Forbidden Planet into production, what’s holding up Swamp Thing and his thoughts on 3-D, as well as confirming that he is no longer working with The Wachowskis. At this weekend’s press junket for Ninja Assassin, I participated in a roundtable interview with screenwriters J. Michael Straczynski  and Matthew Sand.  While some screenwriters are lucky to have one project in developement, these two have tons.  In fact, the list of projects they’re working on or have been on is rather impressive.  Here’s some of them: Brothers in Arms, Red Star, Forbidden Planet, Lensmen, Silver Surfer, WWZ, and Shattered Union.

While we didn’t get to spend a lot of time on any one project, what we did get was updates on all of them.  So if you’re curious what’s up with any of these movies, hit the jump to read what they had to say.
