This Season of HOUSE M.D. Will Be the Last

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 8th, 2012 at 3:27 pm

house-md-hugh-laurie-slice-01

After much speculation, the producers of House M.D. have finally come to a smart decision. The current eighth season of the medical drama series starring Hugh Laurie will be the last. With Lisa Edelstein opting not to come back this season, the writing was on the wall for Dr. Gregory House to end his practice, and now it’s official. While the show certainly should come to an end at this point, this season has been surprisingly decent, especially with new cast members like Charlyne Yi and Odette Annable. The most recent episode, a departure from the show’s usual formula, was one of the best of the season, and while the writers certainly still have some fight left in them, it’s time to give House and his team a respectful exit. Does that mean we’ll see some old faces stop by for a clean wrap up? We’ll have to wait and see. Hit the jump for a heartfelt thanks and farewell from producers David Shore, Katie Jacobs and Hugh Laurie, as well as a statement from Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

Bay Area Readers: Attend a Free Exclusive Alcatraz Island Event As Part of Viral Campaign for the Fox Series ALCATRAZ

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 26th, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Attention Bay Area readers: how’d you like to spend a strange night on Alcatraz Island? A special exclusive event as part of the viral campaign for Fox’s Alcatraz is set for Friday, January 27th on Alcatraz Island. The event is free, and will be “an exclusive adventure” for the first 302 people who show up at pier 33 tomorrow night at 6pm. The description for the event is as follows:

“Dr. Soto has arranged exclusive night-time access to the Rock for those interested in helping him solve the mysteries for his new book – Legends of Alcatraz

I’ve watched the first couple episodes of the show, and I found it definitely intriguing. The J.J. Abrams touch is not lost on the series, and this event sounds pretty damn cool. Those wishing to venture onto the island are instructed to bring a flashlight, warm clothes, and a comfortable pair of shoes. Check out more of our coverage of the Alcatraz viral campaign here and here. Hit the jump to check out the official invite for the event.

Has Fox Shot 8 Minutes of R-rated DEADPOOL Test Footage?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 13th, 2012 at 3:03 pm

While it seems like we’re hit with an ever-increasing barrage of superhero movies each year, Deadpool is surely one of the most anticipated that’s yet to see the light of day. The film has been in the works for years now, and finally got some movement when visual effects guru Tim Miller was set as director last April. It’s a hard sell, as star Ryan Reynolds and those creatively involved are adamant that the feature be true to the comic and therefore rated R. Word on the project has been quiet for some time, but comic writer/illustrator Rob Liefeld recently let slip that he may or may not have seen eight minutes of test footage from the film. Details after the jump.

PORTLANDIA Duo Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein Heading to THE SIMPSONS

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: January 13th, 2012 at 12:17 pm

Frankly, not one episode of The Simpsons, other than my annual viewing of The Treehouse of Terror has gotten my attention. Until now. TV Line has word that Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, the dynamic duo who brings the funny on IFC’s sketch comedy series Portlandia will provide their voices to an episode of The Simpsons. Normally guest stars like that wouldn’t get me all that excited, but their involvement is essentially a cross over of their live-action characters from Portlandia into the animated world of Springfield. The episode entitled The Day the Girls Stayed Cool will see Armisen and Brownstein playing part of a “cool” family that moves from Portland to Springfield and becomes the Simpsons’ new neighbors. Homer desperately tries to befriend them, but Marge is skeptical that being cool isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. We probably have series creator Matt Groening, a Portland native, to thank for this bit of genius. The episode will air sometime in the show’s 24th season later this fall.

As you may or may not have seen, a number of outlets have been sent a mysterious metal box containing contents from the new Fox series Alcatraz.  Produced by J.J. Abrams, the hook of the show centers on the sudden appearance of a number of inmates from Alcatraz prison who mysteriously disappeared decades ago.  The contents of the metal case sent to Collider headquarters include a prison cell key, an Alcatraz tour book, a page from a magazine touting Dr. Diego Soto’s (Jorge Garcia) non-fiction book Inmates of Alcatraz, a newspaper clipping, and some postcards.  It’s pretty impressive stuff.  Hit the jump for more, including images of the box’s contents.

FOX to Develop New Late-Night Block of Animated Programming

Move over, Adult Swim; there’s a new player in the pool. For more than ten years now, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block has been the place to find some of the most progressive, insane and “mature” animated programming on TV (stateside, at least). Due to its role in reviving such series as Family Guy and Futurama, FOX has paid attention to Adult Swim’s success over the years and saw that there was money to be made. Already promoting their “animation domination” with regular series Family Guy, The Simpsons and more, FOX has now developed a new unit of animation to focus on a late-night block of animated programming. Not only will this new unit focus on televised programming, they will also have counterparts running online. The shows will air on Saturdays from 11PM to 12:30 AM ET/PT and will feature four new animated series each season, starting in January 2013.  The digital channel starts in 2012 and will feature 50 original creations. Hit the jump to check out the press release.

Midseason is just around the corner, and now Fox is chiming in with their premiere dates for new and returning series. First of all, let’s just get this out of the way, the reality competition giant American Idol will return for its eleventh season on Wednesday, January 18th and 8/7c and Thursday January 19th at the same time.

Now let’s get on with the real series starting with Kiefer Sutherland’s return to Fox with Touch from Heroes creator Tim Kring debuting on Wednesday, January 25th at 9/8c. That’s a prime slot right after an airing of American Idol too. However, the series run won’t actually start until Monday, March 19th at 9/8c. For more premiere dates and times for shows like Alcatraz, Breaking In, The Finder, Napoleon Dynamite and returning shows like New Girl and Glee, hit the jump.

Ricky Martin Will Teach Some Spanish on GLEE

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: November 29th, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Without Gwyneth Paltrow around the halls of William McKinley High School to teach the Glee kids Spanish, something has to be done. And who better to teach the kids then a native speaker of the language. That’s why it’s a bit wacky to hear from TV Line that Ricky Martin is slated to guest star early next year as the new Spanish teacher. You can pretty much be sure that there will be some rendition of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” or “She Bangs” tossed around at some point (otherwise why even bother?) since he’ll be a part of at least two big musical numbers, so children of the late 90′s should have something to look forward to next year. This will be Martin’s biggest acting role to date, far-surpassing his stint on General Hospital at the height of his musical fame in the 90′s

Watch a Short New Teaser Trailer for ALCATRAZ

“This is Alcatraz. Things can always get worse.” Frankly, I hope they get a lot better when Alcatraz, the new supernaturally infused drama series from J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production banner, premieres next year. However, from the looks of this trailer, Fox is holding back the mystery of the series for now with a tease that has Sam Neill welcoming viewers to Alcatraz much in the same way Stephen Lang welcomed everyone to Terra Nova earlier this year. With the producers and creator of Lost behind this new venture though, I’m hoping that my stay at Alcatraz will last longer than the few episodes I spent on Terra Nova before boredom set in eventually. Get a taste of the series after the jump to find out if it’s worth tuning in on Monday, January 16th.

Paul Greengrass to Executive Produce Fox’s New Untitled CIA Drama Series

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: November 17th, 2011 at 11:46 am

slice_paul_greengrass_01

After crafting a successful sci-fi series for TNT in the form of Falling Skies, writer Joe Weisberg now has a new CIA drama series set up through Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox Television with a talent familiar with espionage coming aboard as executive producer. Deadline has word that The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultiamtum director Paul Greengrass will make his first foray into U.S. television as executive producer of the currently untitled series along with Brian Grazer and Weisberg himself. As of now his deal only has him aboard in the producing capacity, but apparently there’s a chance he might also direct the pilot if his schedule allows.

Plot details are limited, but the series is said to be a high-stakes character-based drama centering on the young assistants of high-ranking officers in the U.S. Intelligence community which includes being inside the walls of the CIA, as well as the DIA, NSA, FBI and other various intelligence components at the White House. Sounds like Fox really needs to fill that void left by the end of 24, and this sounds like it has the potential to bring a real action thriller back to the network. Maybe we could get a little Jack Bauer cameo at some point? I doubt it, but you have to dream every now and then.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Getting Multiple Sequels, Andy Serkis and Rupert Wyatt to Return; Studio Fighting to Get Serkis an Oscar Nomination

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 3rd, 2011 at 11:51 am

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES slice

The film that surprised me the most this year was undoubtedly Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Going into the movie, I saw it as an unnecessary cash-in on the Planet of the Apes franchise that inexplicably starred James Franco. Much to my surprise, director Rupert Wyatt delivered one of the most emotional films of the year with a powerhouse performance by Andy Serkis in some of the best motion-capture these eyes have ever seen. With that, I’m happy to report that Fox is now officially moving forward with a sequel to the film as they’ve just closed a very hefty deal for Serkis to return and reprise his role as Caesar. Hit the jump for more, including who else is returning for the follow-up and news on Fox’s push for awards consideration for Serkis’ performance.

Fox Renews THE X FACTOR for a Second Season

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: November 2nd, 2011 at 1:26 pm

Normally reality competition shows aren’t exactly our cup of tea when given the choice between them and fantastic narrative television like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, really anything on AMC, and more, but when a pop culture giant like The X Factor comes along, we like to keep everyone informed every now and then. That’s why we’re letting viewers know that Fox has renewed the American Idol copycat alternative for a second season so we can keep Simon Cowell in those black baby t-shirts for many years to come. Fox Orders Nine More Episodes of BOB’S BURGERS

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: October 31st, 2011 at 10:55 am

The second season of the animated comedy Bob’s Burgers won’t return until next spring, but Fox has already decided to order nine more episodes for the series’ sophomore run. In a press release from the network, some of the antics coming next season will see Bob (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) and the family test-drive the food truck industry, dive into the world of synchronized swimming, search for treasure in an abandoned taffy factory and get tied up with a very needy bank robber. There’s also some fantastic guest stars providing their voices this season including Kevin Kline and Sarah Silverman. For more details and the standard publicity fluff, hit the jump for the full press release.

IN LIVING COLOR Returning to Fox; Keenen Ivory Wayans Will Produce

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 29th, 2011 at 3:47 pm

The classic sketch comedy series In Living Color is getting a reboot. The series, which ran from 1990 to 1994 on Fox and featured fresh-faced talent like Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, and David Alan Grier, is returning once again to Fox. THR reports that Keenan Ivory Wayans, who created the series, will produce the rebooted version. Wayans is set to make two half-hour specials that will air this spring, giving the network the chance of picking the show up to series next fall or mid-season.

The new In Living Color will be a contemporary version of its predecessor, with new young talent and musical guests. The original series was pretty groundbreaking stuff, and fell victim to increased censorship from the network as the sketches got more and more “controversial.” Hopefully Wayans can bring rope some of the original show’s actors for guest appearances. Hit the jump to see some of In Living Color’s more famous characters.
