We recently brought you a new image from Tim Burton’s adaptation of the cult classic TV series Dark Shadows, and now we have quite a few words from the director on a few of his upcoming projects. He’s currently in post-production on Dark Shadows, which tells the story of a vampire (played by Johnny Depp) who attempts to reintegrate with his descendants after being buried for 200 years. In addition to talking about the setting, tone, and characters of Dark Shadows, Burton gave an update on the Beetlejuice sequel that Seth Grahame-Smith is writing and revealed that they’ll be testing an IMAX version of Frankenweenie. Hit the jump for all the details.

Disney will shepherd three animated movies into theaters in 2012. Though we are still waiting for our first glimpse of the promising Wreck-It Ralph, Disney has offered a few looks at both Pixar’s Brave and Tim Burton’s Frankenweeie. Brave, a fairy tale set in the Scottish Highlands, has received the full treatment: two trailers, many images, and a poster to promote the June 22, 2012 release. The stop-motion Frankenweenie comes out later on October 5, 2012, so we only have these images to go by. Expect a trailer for Frankenweenie soon. In the meantime, check out a new image for both Brave and Frankenweenie after the jump, along with more info on each film.

Disney has released the first imaged from Tim Burton‘s Full-Length 3D Stop-Motion Animated remake of Frankenweenie. The movie keeps the black-and-white of his original short film and expands upon the story of a young boy who brings his dog, “Sparky”, back from the dead by using the methods of Dr. Frankenstein. Burton tells Entertainment Weekly that “Ultimately, we try to go with the slightly more positive aspects of keeping that [boy-and-his-dog] relationship going.” The images look fine, although as MattPatches astutely points out, Frankenweenie looks a lot like Brad Bird‘s Family Dog.
Hit the jump to check out the images. The film features the voices of Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, and Martin Landau. Frankenweenie opens October 5, 2012.

At the D23 Expo, Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar previewed their upcoming slate of animated films, showing exclusive footage with select cast and crew present. Among the highlights of the jam-packed panel: Pixar’s Brave and Monsters University, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, and Disney’s November 2012 release Wreck-It Ralph (about an arcade video game bad guy) all screened exclusive new footage. For the bullet point highlights from the animated portion of the panel, hit the jump. And for coverage on the live action portion of the panel, featuring The Muppets, John Carter, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and The Avengers, click here.

At today’s D23, Walt Disney released the logo for Tom Burton’s stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie. If you’re not aware, Burton came up with the idea for Frankenweenie in the early 80′s, but due to budget constraints and never having directed a feature, he decided to make it as a short film. Which, at the time, proved to be a great calling card, as the short led him to directing features. And now it’s come full circle, as Burton has been hard at work bringing Frankenweenie to life as a feature film, and it’s getting released October 5, 2012.
Shortly after showing the packed D23 audience a sizzle reel, I was able to speak with producers Allison Abbate and Don Hahn backstage. They talked about what they showed today, the visual look of the film (it’s both in 3D and black and white) and what year it takes place, the music and score, and when will we see our first look at the film (October). Hit the jump to watch the interview and you can also get a high resolution version of the logo.

Disney is probably done with Comic-Con for good. The studio now has its own convention, the D23 Expo, and they’re using it to promote their upcoming films. This year, D23 will have presentations for The Avengers, The Muppets, John Carter, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Brave, Wreck-It Ralph, Frankenweenie, Oz the Great and Powerful, and more. The presentations will include appearances from Jason Segel, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Macdonald, Jennifer Garner, Jack McBrayer, unnamed cast members from The Avengers, “and other surprise guests.”
Hit the jump for the full press release, which also announces presentations from the Pixar Creative team, a behind-the-scenes look at Monsters University, an advanced screening of The Lion King 3D and more. The D23 Expo runs from August 19 – 21st at the Anaheim Convention Center. Collider will be on hand to cover the event.

Walt Disney Studios has released the official synopsis for Tim Burton’s feature-length adaptation of his own 1984 short Frankenweenie:
After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.
Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, and Atticus Shaffer will voice the characters in the 3D black-and-white stop-motion animated film, due October 5, 2012. Hit the jump to see the full production notes.

Disney has altered the release dates for its 2012 3D tentpole projects, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Andrew Stanton’s (WALL-E) John Carter of Mars adaptation. According to an Exhibitor Relations Facebook update, Burton’s stop-motion remake of his 1984 live-action short, Frankenweenie, (which was recently slated for a March 9th release) is now set to hit 3D theaters on October 5th of the same year. As for John Carter of Mars, the project originally held a release date of June 8th, 2012 but has now been bumped up to fill Frankenweenie‘s previously held March 9th release.
As a reminder, Frankenweenie will star the voice talents of Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Catherine O’Hara, and Martin Short. John Carter of Mars will feature a solid cast that includes Mark Strong, Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Haden Church, Polly Walker, and Taylor Kitsch.

Even though the film is still a couple years away, Tim Burton has already lined up a voice cast for his upcoming 3D stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie. The film is an adaptation of his 1984 short, and tells the story of “a man who reanimates his dog after it gets hit by a car.” Deadline reports that Winona Ryder will voice the role of Elsa, and Martin Landau will provide the voice for Mr. Rzykruski. Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara have also been cast and will provide five voices each. Short will voice Bob, Nassor, Toshiaki, Victor’s Dad, and Mr. Bergermeister. Meanwhile, O’Hara will voice Edgar, Weird Girl, Victor’s Mom, and Gym Teacher.
The role of each character in the film is still unknown. Frankenweenie marks the fourth collaboration between Burton and screenwriter John August (Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), and will be released by Disney on March 9, 2012. Hit the jump to check out the original short film.

Disney has staked its claim in the first two filmgoing seasons of 2012, with 3D tentpoles now set to anchor spring and summer. When Tim Burton first revealed he would adapt his 1984 live-action short Frankenweenie — in which a man resurrects his dog from the dead — into a 3D stop-motion animation feature film, the director had a 2011 release in mind. However, Disney has officially slated Frankenweenie for release on March 9, 2012.
Fellow 3D flick John Carter of Mars will hit theaters just three months later on June 8, 2012. Pixar’s own Andrew Stanton (WALL·E) is the writer/director behind this adaptation of the first book in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Barsoom Series,” set on “the wounded planet of Mars, a world inhabited by warrior tribes and exotic desert beings.” Talor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, and Lynn Collins star.

Not busy enough with five other projects, Tim Burton is rumored to be developing an adaptation of the Japanese manga, Mai The Psychic Girl, which he hopes to direct. Burton was once attached to direct an adaptation of Mai in the late 80’s, which was going to feature music by the band Sparks. Burton is supposedly back on the project after Sony gave the rights back to him after acquiring the project 8 years ago. This is only the latest project to join Burton’s list of upcoming films. You can find out more about Mai and what other films Burton has coming up after the jump.

Artist “Hexagonall” has designed minimalist posters [via The Awesomer] for all of Tim Burton’s movies, plus his short films Vincent, Frankenweenie, and The Adventures of Stainboy (although The Nightmare Before Christmas was actually directed by Henry Selick). For those who don’t know “Hexagonall”, he/she’s the gent/lady who designed the Lost/Saul Bass mash-up back in March. If you like Tim Burton’s movies and minimalist artwork, hit the jump to check out these posters. You can click here if you want to buy them.

With Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland finally set to come out March 5 (that crazy Cheshire cat is already burned on my brain from the trailers alone), it seems he may already have his sights set on another Disney fairy tale – but, of course, from his own twisted viewpoint.
AICN is reporting he may – sort of – turn his attentions next to Sleeping Beauty, but instead of just putting his own dark touch on the original, he would transform it to be told from the viewpoint of Maleficent, the “mistress of all evil” who is the movie’s antagonist and would go on to appear in the Kingdom Hearts video game series and other Disney offerings. The movie would, in fact, be called Maleficent.
Personally, I think this sounds like great news, if it actually happens. When he coasts through by-the-numbers remakes like Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Burton seems as genuinely uninterested in making them as I was in watching them, but when he really bites into something classic and makes it his own, his movies can be a heck of a lot of fun. And it would certainly give Helena Bonham Carter something wild to play with. Hit the jump to find out what else Tim Burton has on his plate, and of course let us know if you think Maleficent the movie would be a good idea or not.

Tim Burton made a surprise appearance at the D23 Expo to display a 3-D teaser for his upcoming “Alice in Wonderland” feature, and announce his follow up project to be a stop-motion adaptation of “Frankenweenie,” one of the short films he made prior to his rookie feature-length directorial effort in “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” More weenie after the jump.
