IMMORTALS Review

“The director is God.”  It’s a saying that has been applied to directors of both stage and screen.  Directors (theoretically) control every aspect of a production and they marshal armies of various departments to bring forth a vision.  Director Tarsem Singh took the saying as the subtext for his new movie, Immortals.  Singh has always been an indulgent visual stylist, but with Immortals, he has bent a script to create a shining tribute to his own genius.  On the page, the movie is a standard “Hero from humble beginnings”, but in the hands of Singh, it becomes lush, outlandish, baffling, and above all, vainglorious.

8 Clips from IMMORTALS Starring Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke

We’ve been provided with eight clips from The Fall director Tarsem Singh’s new film Immortals. The pic centers on Theseus (Henry Cavill), a mortal, who teams up with the Greek gods in order to defeat the power-hungry King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). Instead of depicting the gods as ginormous otherworldly creatures, Singh has taken a different route and instead the gods take the form of chiseled immortal beings that don’t look dissimilar from humans.

The film also stars Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Isabel Lucas, Joseph Morgan, Kellan Lutz, and Stephen DorffImmortals opens in 3D on November 11th and we’ll have exclusive interviews with the cast the week of release.  Hit the jump to watch the clips.

Teaser Trailer for Michael Winterbottom’s TRISHNA Starring Freida Pinto

A teaser trailer for director Michael Winterbottom’s (The Killer Inside Me) drama Trishna has landed online. Starring Freida Pinto and Riz Ahmed, the film is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles set against a contemporary Indian backdrop. For those unfamiliar, Trishna centers on the relationship between a rickshaw driver’s daughter (Pinto) and the son of a wealthy property developer (Ahmed). As you can probably guess, their vastly different socioeconomic backgrounds do not make a happy, healthy relationship all that easy to come by.

The film features original songs from Indian musician Amit Trivedi as well as an original score by Shigeru Umebayashi (House of Flying Daggers). If this cut is any indication, the contributions of each of these musicians are at the forefront of the film. Check out the teaser trailer for yourself after the jump. Trishna will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th.

3rd Trailer for Tarsem Singh’s IMMORTALS

Relativity Media has released yet another trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Immortals and I’m starting to seriously doubt the film.  I liked what I saw when the teaser trailer debuted at WonderCon, but every trailer looks the same.  It’s the same footage again and again just in a different order.  Also, the plot is that King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) wants to bring down the gods so the gods hire Theseus (Henry Cavill) to stop him.  None of the trailers explain why the gods can’t do this themselves.  It’s kind of an obvious question and no amount of speed-ramping can answer it.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.  Immortals opens in 3D on November 11th.

New Images from Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE and Michael Winterbottom’s TRISHNA

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 11th, 2011 at 12:25 pm

I don’t remember the last time I posted this many image articles in a single day.  This is number five and it’s got new images from Roman Polanski’s Carnage and Michael Winterbottom’s Trishna.  The Carnage images are just stars Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, and Kate Winslet doing dramatic stare downs at each other and even at the camera.  Carnage—which only runs 79 minutes since it plays out in real time—focuses on two sets of parents who come together to settle a schoolyard fight between their kids.  As for Trishna, the movie is based on Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles but set against an Indian backdrop.  I’m sure star Freida Pinto will have more to work with than she did in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Carnage opens this December and will play at the Venice and New York Film Festivals.  Trishna will play at the Toronto International Film Festival.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Review

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES slice

You’re not supposed to cut out your stars half-way through your blockbuster movie.  You’re not supposed to rest your big summer movie on apes created by CGI motion-capture technology.  You’re not supposed to sell an audience on the far-fetched idea that humans can be defeated by a species that doesn’t have opposable thumbs [correction: Apes do have opposable thumbs.  We're all doomed].  You’re not supposed to leave the audience on a down note.  There’s so much that goes into making a formulaic, forgettable blockbuster and no one told the folks behind Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  Instead, Rupert Wyatt, the screenwriters, the actors, and the special effects team broke all the rules and came out with one the summer’s most exciting movies.

New clips from Rise of the Planet of the Apes have gone online.  I liked the earlier clip I saw of Caesar (Andy Serkis) protecting his human father figure (John Lithgow) but now I want to go into the film not spoiling any more of it for myself.  However, if you still need to be convinced about pre-damned-and-dirty apes then hit the jump to check out the 5 clips.  The film stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, Tom Felton, and Brian Cox.  Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens August 5th.

Comic-Con 2011: IMMORTALS Panel Recap; Tarsem Talks 3D Visuals and Screens Fight Scene Footage

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 23rd, 2011 at 2:22 pm

Tarsem Singh’s Immortals had a presentation at WonderCon in April and you can check out my recap of that panel here.  For those who don’t know, the film has been compared to 300 due its highly-stylized re-telling of Greek myth (and yes, I know 300 was based on Greek history, not mythology).  The story centers on Theseus (Henry Cavill) who is called upon by the gods (Luke Evans as Zeus; Isabel Lucas as Athena) to fight the conquering menace of King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his bunny rabbit helmet of doom.   But Comic-Con’s Hall H is a much bigger stage, we’re closer to the release date (November 11th), and I was eager to see how much new stuff I was going to see.  I also wanted to see how many Man of Steel questions Cavill could duck.

New Trailer for IMMORTALS [Updated]

A new trailer for director Tarsem Singh’s (The Fall) epic Immortals has been released. This one’s a bit more action-heavy than the first trailer that was released. The film looks decidedly 300-esque, but I’m hoping Singh brings something more to the table than slow motion fight scenes. He’s definitely proven his penchant for breathtaking visuals, and it’s a safe bet that Immortals will be no exception.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Immortals stars Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz, John Hurt, and Mickey Rourke. [Update: We have updated the article with a higher-quality version of the trailer.]

New Trailer, Images, and Poster for RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

We’ve got a slew of monkey news for you today. A UK trailer and poster, as well as a batch of new images from Rise of the Planet of the Apes have been released. This international trailer looks to be the best one yet. I think it gets the tone just right, plus we get our first look at the apes standing up (next step, clothes). I still don’t think an Apes reboot is necessary, but I think a sequel to Rise, wherein we see the apes begin to build society anew, would be much more interesting than this film. Nevertheless, the effects on the apes keep looking better and better each time we see a new trailer. The new images released give us a great look at some of WETA Digital’s work.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, and images. Starring James Franco, Andy Serkis, Tom Felton, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, and Freida Pinto, Rise of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on August 5th.

8 New Character Posters for IMMORTALS

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 21st, 2011 at 3:48 pm

immortals-poster-slice

Relativity has released eight new character posters for director Tarsem Singh’s (The Cell) Immortals. Starring Henry Cavill, Luke Evans, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Mickey Rourke, John Hurt, Stephen Dorff, and Freida Pinto, the film centers on a stonemason named Theseus (Cavill) as he attempts to keep the long lost Bow of Epirus out of the hands of the ruthless King Hyperion (Rourke). As for the sheets themselves, I think that character posters are a great way of introducing unknowing audiences to the individual personalities of characters they may not already be familiar with. As one of those unknowing audience members, I’m not sure I know more about the characters after seeing these promos.

Check the posters out for yourself after the jump. Immortals hits 3D theaters later this year on November 11th.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Theatrical Trailer

The theatrical trailer for director Rupert Wyatt’s (The EscapistRise of the Planet of the Apes is now available online. While I continue to be impressed with the digital effects work done by Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital, I’m unsure what to make of dialogue such as “That chimp’s company property!” Moreover, even though I’m a fan of Frank Schaffner’s 1968 original (co-written by Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling), I’m still not convinced that this is a property I need to learn more backstory about (which, I assume, is Rise‘s sole purpose in the franchise). Starring James Franco, Andy Serkis, Tom Felton, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, and Freida Pinto, Rise of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on August 5th.

The trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Immortals has officially gone online.  Now it’s in HD.  It’s a visually impressive  film so you’ll want to check it out the trailer if you haven’t already (or only saw the low-quality version that was posted yesterday).

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Immortals stars Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz, John Hurt, and Mickey Rourke.

Trailer for Tarsem Singh’s IMMORTALS [Updated]

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 26th, 2011 at 8:38 am

immortals-movie-image-slice-01

The trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Immortals has made its way online but in the worst way possible.  I caught the trailer at WonderCon and was impressed by its lush and dazzling visuals.  So what’s the worst way everyone else could get their first look at it?  By premiering it on E! News with the anchorwoman talking over the footage and then having that presentation taped off a television and uploaded to YouTube.  Relativity (the studio behind the film) needs to put the HD version online ASAP.

Hit the jump to check out the less-than-impressive version of the trailer.  Obviously we’ll update the story when a higher-quality version makes its way online.  Immortals stars Henry Cavill, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, and Mickey Rourke.  The film opens in 3D on November 11th.

[Update: We've updated the article with a better quality version of the video.  Also, this trailer isn't exactly like the one that was shown at WonderCon, but there's a lot of overlap in the footage]

High Resolution Concept Art from RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Continuing our coverage of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox has sent over high resolution images of the concept art that was shown during yesterday’s webcast.  While the trailer that premiered earlier today definitely focuses on the action, I’m hoping the story is solid and it’s more than just some cool action set pieces.  After reading Germain’s set report, I’m very optimistic.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, David Oyelowo, and Andy Serkis as the ape Caesar.  The film opens August 5th.  Hit the jump for the concept art.
