I love discovering new artists.  While it’s always great to see the latest work by Martin Ansin or Tyler Stout, walking into a gallery and not being sure what you’re going to see is a great feeling…especially when the art is well done.  And that’s what happened last night as I walked into the Shannon Bonatakis and Kiersten Essenpreis show at Gallery1988 in Los Angeles.  Last week at the Bad Robot show, Jensen Karp (the man behind Gallery1988) told me I’d want to stop by to see Shannon and Kiersten’s work.  He was definitely right.

As you can see in the 50 pictures after the jump, the show is loaded with mostly original works that are smart and interesting.  I hate trying to describe why a piece of art works because it’s so subjective, but I promise if you check it out, you’ll agree that it’s worth your time.  In addition, while the show is mostly original’s, Essenpreis has 9 screenprints and they’re very low runs.  If you see anything you like, I’d advise you to hit the online drop in a few hours before it sells out.  Hit the jump for more.

Check Out Olly Moss’ Incredible Poster for the 85th Academy Awards

Even if you hate the Oscars, you’ll love what artist Olly Moss has done for the official 85 Years of Oscar poster.  We previously showed you individual posters by various artists for this year’s Best Picture nominees, but Moss’ work outshines them all.  He’s taken every single Best Picture winner and tried to fit them into the Oscar statue in one image.  Some of these are particularly brilliant (it took me a few moments to figure out how he represented 2001′s winner, A Beautiful Mind), and it’s a fun game to try and guess the each year’s Best Picture winner from Moss’ poster alone.

We know that Gallery1988 is teaming up with the Academy for something big this Thursday through Sunday.  They are giving away 100 of each of the Best Picture nominee posters, and it will be interesting to see if they do anything special with the Moss poster.  More details should be announced in the next day or so.  Hit the jump to check out Moss’ 85 Years of Oscar poster and find out how you can buy it now.  The 85th Academy Awards will be held on February 24th at 7pm EST on ABC.

All week long, rumors have circulated about a “top-secret” event taking place in Los Angeles next weekend.  We mentioned that an announcement was forthcoming back on Monday or Tuesday, and in the time since…well, lemme tell ya:  you wouldn’t believe some of the crazy theories and rumors people emailed in to Limited Paper HQ.  We heard “it’s a Banksy show”, that “it’s definitely a Hanksy show”, that it was an all-Olly-Moss joint, that an entire crew of artists were involved and that they’d all been forced to sign contracts preventing them from revealing anything about this mystery event prior to the official announcement.  Somewhere in the middle of all that, Gallery1988’s Twitter feed promised that whatever was being planned would be a “game-changer”.  What’s the truth?  Find out after the jump.

Last week, BAFTA premiered special posters for their Best Picture nominees.  Today, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences had followed suit by teaming up with Gallery1988 and various artists to create posters for this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees.  There are some impressive posters, and I’m curious to see if they’re going to go on sale at some point.  The Academy’s website lists the dimensions and type of production (screen print), which leads me to believe that these might be available for purchase some day.  I’m sure there are plenty of readers who would love to get their hands on Mark Englert‘s print for Django Unchained. [Update: Gallery1988 has tweeted the following: "G1988 x The Academy. Official. 2/14 - 2/17. More soon." so it looks like you should get your wallets ready, and keep an eye on their official website.]

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The Academy Awards will be held on February 24th at 7pm EST on ABC.

Limited Paper: Spoke Art’s New LIFE AQUATIC Print, Ltd Art Gallery Announces MINT CONDITION 2 (Plus, What Top-Secret Event is About to be Announced?)

by     Posted: February 5th, 2013 at 10:37 am

You may recall that last week was a slow one in terms of poster-related news.  Here at Limited Paper HQ, we spent more than a few days twiddling our thumbs and hoping for something interesting (hell, we would’ve settled for “moderately interesting”) to come along and break up the monotony…but it never did.   The good news is, the news-drought of January appears to be officially over, and—from where we’re standing—the news-tidal wave of February might just be getting started.

Indeed, much like your sister in a frat house, we’ve been getting it on all sides since yesterday morning: tantalizing bits of gossip, a few interesting bits of gallery news, preview pics we can start rolling out over the next week… we better get on with it before more arrives, eh?  Meet me after the jump to see a Life Aquatic poster you can buy right now, learn which gallery show Limited Paper’s participating in next month, and to hear a few rumors regarding a top-secret event happening next week in California.

Last night, Gallery1988 and Hello Giggles premiered “Young Adult,” which featured 60 female artists taking on their favorite teen-focused literature of the ’80s and ’90s (like Nancy Drew and Sweet Valley High).  The Hello Giggles co-creators, producer Sophia Rossi, actress Zoey Deschanel and writer Molly “Molls” McAleer, came up with the show’s theme and helped put together the show.  Shortly before the doors opened, I walked around the gallery and took over pictures of everything on display.  Some of the artists included Bec Winnel, Shana Bilbrey, Kiersten Essenpreis, Danielle Buerli, Kristin Tercek , Jessica Deahl, Tracie Ching, Lorena Alvarez Gomez, Shannon Finch, Misha, and many more.  Hit the jump for the images.

Limited Paper: Gallery 1988 Reveals the Full Lineup for New Gallery Show Featuring Jay Shaw, Josh Budich, and Jeff Boyes

by     Posted: August 3rd, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Earlier in the week, we ran a brief preview about Gallery 1988’s latest show, a “three-man solo show” featuring new art from Jay Shaw, Jeff Boyes, and Josh Budich.  At the time, we shared about half a dozen pictures, bringing you what may or may not’ve been your first look at Shaw’s Klute and Invasion of The Body Snatchers, Budich’s Sorceress and Tetsuo, and—last but not least—the one-two punch of Boyes’ Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind and The Wolf Mobile (based on the original Teen Wolf).  Those pics were all great, to be sure, but they did leave us a little wanting…but all that’s over now.

Wanna see every other print that’s on sale via the good folks at Gallery1988?  Meet me after the jump, folks (and be sure to bring your wallet).

We’re only 24 hours or so into the 2012 SDCC, and already Mondo – the movie-poster producing arm of Tim League’s ever-expanding Alamo Drafthouse brand—has caused quite the stir:  last night’s archive sale put a slew of Avengers posters into the hands of eager fans who’d been unable to catch them during their drop dates, and today the company unveiled three new posters—for The Dark Knight Rises, Princess Mononoke, and HBO’s Game of Thrones–  that resulted in the kind of sprawling lines usually associated with theme park rides.  Want to see Mondo’s latest, and hear about what it was like on the frontlines?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

Paramount Celebrates 100th Anniversary with Impressive Gallery1988 Poster

paramount-pictures-anniversary-poster-slice

You might have noticed a number of anniversary-themed logos for many of the film studios popping up in movie theaters this year, as it’s been nearly 100 years since many of the largest studios were first created.  Paramount Pictures is marking the occasion with a specially-commissioned poster from Gallery1988.  The print is actually really cool, with small, minimalist depictions for some of the studios’ most famous films.  Though the poster is only available to Paramount employees, this online iteration serves as a fun challenge for cinephiles to guess which pictures correspond to which films.

Hit the jump to check out the poster and test your cinematic knowledge.  If you’re a fan of pop-culture themed art prints, be sure to check out our new feature Limited Paper in which we round up the latest prints, announcements, and host interviews with some of the film/art crowd’s most popular artists.  You can read the latest issue right here.

If you live in Los Angeles and are a fan of comic book characters and/or art, you’re in luck.  Disney announced today that Gallery1988 in Hollywood will be playing host to a bevy of artwork inspired by The Avengers.  The art show will run through the film’s opening weekend, May 3rd through May 6th, so you can partake in more The Avengers goodness before and after you catch the flick.  Disney sent over a couple of sample prints that will be on display, and my jealousy-meter raised up quite a few ticks after having a peek at what Gallery1988 will have to offer.

Hit the jump to check out the images and for more information on the art show.  The event will feature the work of artists such as Dave Perillo, Rhys Cooper, Scott Campbell, Luke Chueh, Ken Garduno, Kiersten Essenpreis and NC Winters, as well as others.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.
