2009 was a big year for director duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Just five short months after their big Crank sequel hit theaters, Gamer, the pair’s first “big budget” picture opened nationwide. The film follows Kable (Gerard Butler), a convicted murderer enrolled in Slayers, a competition for survival against fellow prisoners. The catch: the players can’t control their motor functions.
Instead, they are the puppets of players — in Kable’s case, a teen named Simon (Logan Lerman) — who control them remotely through a video game. Survive 40 matches and you’re free. Die in one match and you’re dead. Are you game? See why you should be after the jump.

The summer movie season is at an end and, as usual, it is going out with a whimper instead of a bang. Despite the fact that the studios gave audiences three fresh choices at the multiplex, the film that eked out the best numbers as of Sunday continued to be last weekend’s 3D horror-hit “The Final Destination”… sick of hearing me talk about those “higher ticket prices” yet? Though only five thousand dollars separated “Destination” and “All About Steve” on Friday, the fact that the Sandra Bullock/Bradley Cooper comedy received some of the worst reviews of the summer (a feat in itself) helped that gap widen as the weekend progressed. Neither of our other newcomers, “Gamer” and “Extract”, built any real momentum which left “Steve” looking a bit like a hit… standards are a lot lower on Labor Day.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Final Destination 4 | $12,435,000 | $47,566,000 |
| 2 | All About Steve | $11,200,000 | $11,200,000 |
| 3 | Inglourious Basterds | $10,847,000 | $91,042,000 |
| 4 | Gamer | $9,000,000 | $9,000,000 |
| 5 | District 9 | $7,000,000 | $101,274,000 |
| 6 | Halloween 2 | $5,608,000 | $25,644,000 |
| 7 | Julie & Julia | $5,200,000 | $78,840,000 |
| 8 | GI Joe | $5,100,000 | $139,415,000 |
| 9 | Time Traveler’s Wife | $4,215,000 | $54,557,000 |
| 10 | Extract | $4,187,000 | $4,187,000 |

Last weekend I was debating which of Labor Day’s new releases would take the top spot during summer’s big finish: “Gamer” or “All About Steve”. The four day box-office period is not traditionally a big money maker for the studios which is why films like “Steve” (delayed since last March) and “Gamer” (21% on Rotten Tomatoes) ended up at the ass-end of the summer schedule. But there was one film I forgot to include in my calculations – “The Final Destination”. The fourth installment in the nine year-old horror franchise continued to pump its 3D legs on its second Friday – bringing in an estimated $3.58 million from 3,121 venues. The romantic comedy “Steve” was not far behind with $3.55 million so I wouldn’t be surprised if, by Sunday, the Sandra Bullock/Bradley Cooper vehicle pulled ahead. In truth, not much separates Friday’s top four films so anything could happen. Check back tomorrow for a box-office update.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Final Destination 4 | $3,580,000 | $38,700,000 |
| 2 | All About Steve | $3,550,000 | $3,550,000 |
| 3 | Gamer | $3,300,000 | $3,300,000 |
| 4 | Inglourious Basterds | $3,000,000 | $83,200,000 |
| 5 | District 9 | $1,750,000 | $96,100,000 |

If you read Collider, you know how I feel about Neveldine/Taylor’s movies. As the writer-director’s behind “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage”, I think these two are absolutely pushing the boundaries of mainstream movies and I love it. So it gives me great pleasure to say they have a new movie opening tomorrow called “Gamer”. Like there two previous films, it’s loaded with action and total mayhem. But while “Crank” had Jason Statham as the lead, “Gamer” has Gerard Butler, and it’s his first full on action movie since “300″!
Anyway, to help promote the film, I was able to sit down with Mark and Brian (Neveldine/Taylor) to talk about making “Gamer” and a lot more. During our conversation they revealed Gerard Butler was almost the lead in “Crank”, “Gamer” has 1000 effects shots, they only had $1 million dollars for effects in “Gamer”! They also talked about what’s on the “Gamer” Blu-ray, what they are currently working on, and a lot more. It’s a great interview so take a look!

If you watch “Dexter”, or used to watch “Six Feet Under”, you know who Michael C. Hall is. But for people without cable, Michael is an excellent actor that has now stared in two fantastic shows. However, no actor wants to be pigeonholed in one area, so he’s slowly making his way into movies…like Neveldine/Taylor’s new movie “Gamer”. In the film, Michael plays a reclusive billionaire who creates a game that has addicted millions. It’s sort of what he’s done to me with “Dexter”….
Anyway, at this year’s Comic-Con, I got to speak with Michael about not only “Gamer”, but what’s coming up this season on “Dexter”. We also talked about how he got into acting and a lot more. It’s a great interview so take a look:

Over the past few months, I have professed my love at the altar of Neveldine/Taylor many times. As the writer/directors behind “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage”, I think they’re maniacs behind the camera and they make movies unlike anyone else. This is a good thing. So to say I’m excited to see their new movie “Gamer” is an understatement. Also, it’s the first action flick Gerard Butler has done since “300″ and I’ve been patiently waiting for him to make another…
Anyway, the reason I’m going on like this is I was just provided with 20 all new images from “Gamer” and they’re after the jump so check them out! Also, if you missed my video interviews with Terry Crews, Chris Bridges or Milo Ventimiglia, just click the links. And look for an in depth interview with Neveldine/Taylor tomorrow night! “Gamer” attacks theaters this weekend.

If you’ve been reading Collider for any amount of time, you know how we feel about Milo Ventimiglia. Since first interviewing him about a year and a half ago, Milo has been a great supporter of the site and has made himself available whenever we’ve had a question. Also, he’s one of the nicest actors in the business.
Anyway, at this year’s Comic-Con, the cast of Neveldine/Taylor’s “Gamer” was out promoting and Jonah was able to sit down with Milo as I couldn’t make the interview. But don’t worry, Jonah stepped up to the plate and asked some great questions. So if you’d like to see Milo talk about his work in “Gamer”, “Heroes”, and video games, take a look after the jump:

While Chris Bridges is known the world over as Ludacris, he’s slowly using his real name to transition into Hollywood as he’s appeared in a number of movies like “RocknRolla”, “Max Payne”, “Fred Claus” and the new Neveldine/Taylor movie “Gamer”. If you’ve seen “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage”, this is their new film. Anyway, Chris promoted “Gamer” at this year’s Comic-Con and now that the movie is about to get released, we’re clear to post it. So watch what he had to say after the jump:

Terry Crews has made a lot of movies. But according to this former NFL player, what he had to do in Neveldine/Taylor’s “Gamer” was the most challenging yet. That’s because the crazy filmmakers behind “Crank” and “Crank: High Volatge” made Terry do a stunt that had him crashing into a real wall with almost no protection. Even the stunts guys told him not to do it. But that’s why I can’t wait to see “Gamer” this weekend…crazy stunts that aren’t repeated anywhere else. Also, since Terry also just wrapped on Stallone’s “Expendables”, he gave me an update on that movie and what it was like to be on that set. It’s all after the jump so take a look:

If you’re like me and have been looking forward to “Gamer”, the next film from Neveldine/Taylor, I’ve got some cool stuff to share. That’s because I was just provided with 5 clips from their new film! So if you need a taste of what’s coming from the crazy minds behind “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage”, click the jump and take a look. Also, make sure you watch clip 4, as I’m pretty sure that Terry Crews really did the stunt. It’s crazy.

As you’ve probably noticed, I’m promoting the shit out of Neveldine/Taylor’s next movie “Gamer”. They send me new images, I keep posting them. What can I say, I’m a fan. Anyway, since I’ve already gone on and on about this movie in previous posts, I’ll let the new images do the talking. So after the jump, check them out.

I love both “Crank” movies. So it should go without saying that I can’t wait to see writer/director Neveldine/Taylor’s next movie “Gamer”. Also, I interviewed the two filmmakers at Comic-Con and after hearing them talk about the film, I’m even more excited to see it as it seems like they threw everything they had at making this film as crazy as it can be. But from the guys who made “Crank”, would you expect anything less. Anyway, in a few weeks I’ll be posting great interviews with the entire cast and Mark and Brian. Until then, check out 5 new images after the jump. “Gamer” hits theaters September 4th.

The weekend “300″ came out, for whatever reason I was at the same nightclub as Gerard Butler. It was Sunday night and we were both at a club called Guys in Beverly Hills. At the time, he remembered me from the press junket, and for a little while I got to hang out with his group which included his brother and a number of other friends. They were all on cloud nine on hearing the news that “300″ had made so much money, and for a brief blip of time, I got to see what it was like to be in that world. I have to say, it was really cool.
Cut to a few days ago. For the first time since that night, I interviewed Gerard and I brought up that weekend and asked how his life has changed since “300″. Of course we also talk about his new movie “The Ugly Truth”, his next big action film “Gamer”, and he tells me some great stories about going to Brazil. It’s a great interview so take a look:

While Gerard Butler has been making a lot of romantic comedies since playing King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s “300″, he’s about to return to the action genre in Neveldine/Taylor’s “Gamer”. If you aren’t familiar with the name Neveldine/Taylor, they made “Crank” and “Crank: High Voltage”. Anyway, their next assault on humanity is “Gamer” and it gets released on September 4th. I can’t wait.
So at this weekend’s press junket for Gerard’s latest film “The Ugly Truth”, I made sure to ask him about returning to action genre with “Gamer”. You can see what he said about the film after the jump:
I dug the “Crank” movies so much that all you really have to say to me is “A film by Neveldine/Taylor” and I’m on board. I think their upcoming film “Gamer” is going to be much better than the recent trailer would have folks believe because while the trailer does a good job of conveying the basic plot, a green-band trailer can’t convey the batshit insanity that I expect, nay, DEMAND, from these gentlemen.
Today, we are lucky enough to bring you an exclusive new image from the film where we see protagonist Kable (Gerard Butler) and a bunch of other gentlemen presumably about to enter the fray. That or they’re waiting at the world’s worst DMV. With Neveldine/Taylor, you never know what to expect.
Click on the image above to see it in super-hi res. Check it out embiggened and with the full plot synopsis after the jump. “Gamer” hits theatres on September 4th.
