A few days ago, I posted an awesome Loki figure from The Avengers made by Hot Toys.  It was the first “Geek Gifts” article in a long time and I mentioned that the response to the post would determine if we’d continue the column.  Let’s just say it was a success.  So, as promised, it’s time for another “Geek Gifts” article and this one is especially relevant for those that like cool t-shirts.

If you’ve ever seen my video interviews, you know I love wearing t-shirts.  I especially love wearing shirts that are inspired by my favorite movies and TV shows.  Recently, a friend turned me onto a company called RedBubble, and they let their users submit their own designs and some of them are pretty great.  Since I know a lot of you don’t have the time to go through the thousands of reader submissions, I’ve done the legwork for you.  So hit the jump if you like Studio Ghibli, Breaking Bad, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Tron, the original Superman, Battle of the Planets, The Lion King, and more.

Geek Gifts: Hot Toys’ Loki Figure from THE AVENGERS

While it’s been awhile since we’ve posted a “Geek Gifts” article, I’m going to try and post more of them in the future.  While I know a lot of you aren’t exactly willing to spend $200 dollars on a limited edition figure of Loki from The Avengers, I’m hoping many of you still find it fun to take a gander.  Based on the hits, I’ll know if we should post more or less of these types of articles.

Anyway, Hot Toys (which makes some awesome stuff) has just released images and info on their awesome looking Movie Masterpiece Series Loki Sixth Scale Figure from The Avengers.  As you’ll see in the images, “the movie-accurate collectible is specially crafted based on the image of Tom Hiddleston as Loki in the movie, highlighting the newly developed head sculpt, highly detailed costume, weapons and accessories.”  Hit the jump for more.

Video Game Deal: MASS EFFECT 3 for $29.99 (50% Off)

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 24th, 2012 at 8:32 am

Amazon’s Gold Box Deal of the Day is Mass Effect 3 for $29.99 (50%) for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.  While Bioware and EA have tried to bill the final installment in the trilogy as a place where newcomers can jump on, that’s stretching it.  Technically, you could start playing at ME3 and the massive Codex would fill in the backstory, but that’s not as much fun as playing the backstory.  The half-off is great because it gives newcomers the opportunity to save $30 bucks on picking up the whole trilogy, so today you could pay $66 on Amazon for all three Xbox 360 games (PlayStation 3 doesn’t have the first Mass Effect).  Despite the highly controversial ending of Mass Effect 3, the Mass Effect series is a high-water mark in gaming, and not to be missed.

Click here to go buy Mass Effect 3 for $29.99, and hit the jump for the game’s trailer.  [Note: Collider earns a small referral fee when our readers purchase something on Amazon through one of our links. Geek Gifts: VHS and Fully Functional Nintendo Controller Coffee Tables

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 10th, 2012 at 4:58 pm

vhs-nintendo-coffee-table-slice

Let’s face the cold, hard truth here: geeks need coffee tables.  Where else are we supposed to put our coffee/coke, video game controller, books, magazines, and feet?  The problem is, we geeks like to flaunt our nerdiness whenever possible, and there just aren’t many coffee table options that make this possible.  Enter: crafty geeks.  Two very awesome, very geek-friendly coffee tables have now come to our attention, crafted by some true visionaries in the art of coffee table-making.  The first is a collection of VHS-inspired tables, complete with scratched-out titles and “Insert This Side Into the Recorder” warnings, while the second is a fully functional Nintendo controller.

This is basically the Sophie’s Choice of coffee table decisions, as the VHS ones are simply gorgeous, but the Nintendo ones double as a table and a video game controller.  Both are beautiful works of art, though, and I highly encourage you to check them out in full detail.  Hit the jump for images and to find out how these can be yours.

Geek Gifts: “Han Solo Carbonite” iPhone 4 Case Lets You Feel Like Boba Fett

If I have one complaint about the iPhone (and I may, in fact, have only one) it’s the relatively plain-looking exterior. Much as it kicks all kinds of ass in terms of performance, there are certainly more aesthetically-intriguing devices out there. But hey, that’s what iPhone cases are for, right? And this one is a doozy, especially if you’re a fan of the Star Wars franchise.

Provided you’ve got an extra $15.50 lying around, the iconic image of Han Solo encased in carbonite at the end of The Empire Strikes Back/beginning of Return of the Jedi can adorn the back of your iPhone 4 or 4S. The plastic-aluminum case is the work of Moti Zemelman, proprietor of the Etsy.com-powered online store iCaseSeraSera. Hit the jump to get a look, plus some insight into how it was designed and buying info.

Have you ever looked into your ice beverages and thought, “This drink is all well and good, but these ice cubes are so dull.”  Well, they don’t have to be!  You can geek up that drink with some help from nerdy ice cube trays.  You know what’s better than drinking a nice cold soda?  Drinking a nice cold soda with a tiny frozen Han Solo in it.  Or if you feel that Star Wars already has its wampa mitts into too much merchandise already, go with a little R-rated sci-fi and throw some Alien eggs into your iced-tea.  Nothing refreshes like a frozen xenomorph fetus.

Hit the jump to check out the ice trays and where you can buy them.

One Minifig to Rule Them All: THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT LEGO Coming Summer 2012

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 16th, 2011 at 8:52 am

LEGO has picked up the rights to some of the biggest movie properties around including Star Wars, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Batman.  Now they have another big title (technically two titles) on the way: The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.  I can only begin to dream of the massive, time-consuming glory these sets will offer.  It will probably cost well over $100 for the set, but I want to spend an entire day building Helm’s Deep (I can’t confirm they’re going to offer it, but I’d be shocked it they didn’t).  But think of the possibilities: The Shire. Rivendell. Mirkwood. Rohan. Minas freaking Tirith.

Hit the jump for the press release and sound off in the comments about what you can’t wait to build.  The release of the LEGO sets is timed to coincide with the build up to the first part of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit adaptation, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which opens December 14, 2012.  Part two, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, opens December 13, 2013.
