New images from The Hunger Games and Byzantium have gone online along with a new set photo from Riddick. The image from The Hunger Games gives us another look at Donald Sutherland as the villainous President Snow. Reading the books, I thought Sutherland was a fine choice because A) he can convey the heartlessness of the character; and B) the role will probably keep to the unofficial rule that after the year 2000, Donald Sutherland can’t be in a movie for longer than 15 minutes.

Well this is a doozy of a scheduling change. Paramount has pushed back the release of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters from this coming March to January 11th, 2013. The film stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular fairy tale characters, and as one can surmise the plot involves their hunt for women in pointy hats. Having seen no trailer and only one image of the film thus far, it’s not all that shocking that Paramount is pushing the release back. This scheduling shift comes on the heels of the studio’s The Devil Inside bringing in over $30 million on the first weekend of the month despite a terrible reputation from critics and the general public alike.
Renner stars in this May’s The Avengers and will get his shot at the lead with this fall’s The Bourne Legacy, so the studio may want to capitalize on his stardom by placing Hansel and Gretal after these two major releases. Harvey Weinstein recently admitted to doing the same with The Wettest County, which stars Tom Hardy. The release date was moved to after The Dark Knight Rises comes out in order to capitalize on Hardy’s recognition following his turn as Bane. Hansel and Gretel currently has no competition on the January 11th date, but the Arnold Schwarzenegger actioner The Last Stand, the 3D re-release of Monsters Inc., the Russell Crowe drama Broken City, and the star-studded magician heist flick Now You See Me all open the following weekend.

The first image from fairy tale re-imagining Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has gone online. The movie stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the eponymous characters who are all growed up and looking for a little payback against the witch community. Arterton tells Entertainment Weekly that the movie is “as much Pulp Fiction as fairy tale.” So how do you defeat witches? Do you burn their gingerbread houses to the ground? Judging by this image, witches are terrified by the black leather.

Vanessa Redgrave, Terence Stamp, Gemma Arterton, and Christopher Eccleston are set to star in the British comedic drama Song for Marion. The story has Stamp playing a grumpy retiree who reluctantly joins a local choir at the urging of his wife Marion (Regrave). There he learns valuable life lessons through “musical self discovery”. I know that synopses that are from press releases don’t always do the best job of conveying the tone of a film, and so I hope Song for Marion isn’t as saccharine as it sounds. Paul Andrew Williams (London to Brighton) will direct from his own screenplay.

News out of the Cannes Film Festival suggests that vampire movies are not quite dead yet. Director Neil Jordan and producer Stephen Woolley will reteam for the all-in-the-family vampire pic, Byzantium. Based on an original script by Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre), Byzantium is the story of a deadly pairing of a mother vampire (Arterton) who turns her daughter (Ronan). In addition to the principal cast members, Byzantium also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse).

Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Gabriel Byrne have signed on to star in an adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel Crooked House. In the murder mystery is set against “the backdrop of three generations of a family that lives together in a large and seemingly crooked house.” Every member of the eccentric family has motive to have killed the multimillionaire patriarch, Aristide Leonide. Neil LaBute (Death at a Funeral) will direct from a script by Julian Fellowes (The Tourist) and Tim Rose Price (The Serpent’s Kiss). The $20 million production is scheduled to shoot this summer in the U.K. The story calls for a large ensemble, so expect more casting notices in the near future. Andrews, Goode, and Byrne — and sure, let’s throw in the lovely Arterton — is a very good start.

The first unofficial set photos from Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters have leaked online. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as the title characters who are still harboring resentment because they were almost killed by witches when they were kids. There’s nothing super-remarkable about the photos although you’ll see that just because you’re hunting witches, doesn’t mean you can’t look stylish.
Hit the jump to check out the set photos. Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), the film also stars Famke Janssen, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, and Peter Stormare. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters opens in 3D on March 2, 2012.

Paramount has set Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters for March 2, 2012. The film spins the Grimm fairy tale to where Hansel and Gretel are now adults (played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, respectively) and bounty-hunters who specialize in the witch-killin’ business. Famke Janssen will play the leader of the witches. Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy, Adam McKay, and Kevin J. Messick will produce with Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola at the helm.
Currently, the only competition Hansel & Gretel will have that weekend is the animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. Both films are currently set to be released in 3D. [Deadline]

Rosamund Pike is an actress who has been circling big-name properties like X-Men: First Class and more recently, Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. However, it looks like rather than tangle with the Man of Steel, she’ll be joining Jonathan Liebesman Clash of the Titans sequel, Wrath of the Titans. Deadline reports that Pike will play Andromeda in the film and that it will be a much larger role than in the 2010 film (when it was played by Alexa Davalos, who was “unavailable for the sequel”). For those unfamiliar with Pike, she first broke out in 2002′s Die Another Day, and has done some strong supporting work in recent indie films such as An Education and Barney’s Version.
Wrath of the Titans also stars Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, and Liam Neeson. The film is due out in 3D on March 30, 2012.

Famke Janssen has joined the cast of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. The re-imagining of the Grimm fairy tale that has the brother and sister (played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton) as adults who survived their encounter at the gingerbread house and have become full-time witch-slayers. The script is from All You Need Is Kill screenwriter D.W. Harper, and Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) will direct. The Playlist originally confirmed the casting, and Deadline reports that Janssen will play the leader of the witches.
Filming is slated to begin March 7th in order to accommodate the small window of time in Renner’s schedule when he’s wrapped on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol but hasn’t yet begun work on The Avengers.

The 2011 BAFTA Rising Star Nominees have been announced. According to THR, “the nominations recognize five international actors and actresses whose talent has captured the imagination of the British public.” The nominees are Emma Stone (Easy A), Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Tom Hardy (Inception), Gemma Arterton (Tamara Drewe), and Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass). It’s hard to argue that any of these actors aren’t rising stars, especially when two of them are starring in the Spider-Man reboot (Stone and Garfield) and one is costarring in The Dark Knight Rises (Hardy). Previous winners include James McAvoy (2006), Eva Green (2007), Shia LaBeouf (2008), Noel Clarke (2009), and Kristen Stewart (2010).
Winners will be announced Sunday, February 13th. Other 2011 BAFTA nominations will be announced January 18th.

Gemma Arterton has signed on to star alongside Jeremy Renner in Paramount’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Described by Heat Vision as a “a dark action movie that picks up with the fairy tale siblings years after the traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters,” Hansel & Gretel is being directed by Norway’s own Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow).
Per the report, Arterton beat out Diane Kruger (Inglorious Bastards), Eva Green (Casino Royale), and Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) for the lead role which could begin shooting in Berlin as early as this March. It is believed that Paramount would like to push Hansel & Gretel ahead of Fox’s own 3D action flick Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which is currently aiming at a June 22nd, 2012 release. In addition to Witch Hunters, Arterton also landed a role recently alongside Andrew Garfield in Michael Mann’s Capa.
