“Survival isn’t just for the living.” So says the tagline for Survival of the Dead, the most recent addition to George Romero’s zombie oeuvre. It’s a great premise.
Romero effectively created the zombie genre with Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978). But it was with 1985′s Day of the Dead that he introduced the unique notion that the living dead could rise above their mindless craving for human flesh and could relearn human behaviour. Twenty years later, when he finally made a fourth Dead movie – 2005′s Land of the Dead - he expounded further on that idea, going so far as to make his signature black hero a zombie instead of a living human. Zombies are back, though I’m not sure they ever left. On the eve of Zombieland hitting theaters, a trailer for “The Crazies” has finally gone live. As we reported on Wednesday, the film is a remake of a 1973 George Romero film of the same name. The remake stars Timothy Olyphant and takes place in a small Iowa town where a toxin contaminates the water supply, turning everyone completely crazy. The trailer and my thoughts on it after the jump.

If you like zombies, you’re in luck! Well, kind of. Director Breck Eisner is stepping up to remake “The Crazies,” a 1973 George Romero film, and we’ve got the new poster. The remake takes place in a small Iowa town (as opposed to a small Pennsylvania town in the original) where a toxin contaminates the water supply, turning everyone completely crazy. In the original, the contamination is caused by a government biological weapon, and the gov’t comes back to try and clean up the mess. The new film is based “loosely” on the original, so it’s hard to say what will and won’t change. More after the jump.

The latest remake news is that “Night of the Living Dead” is now being “remade” as a 3D CGI orgin story titled “Night of the Living Dead: Origins” The film has been remade a couple of times already thanks to being in the public domain, but this new take aims to update the tale partially by bringing out the characters’ back stories. The film will be produced by Simon West (“Con Air”) and directed by newcomer director Zebediah de Soto who aims to make the film into a “American-style anime.” The film will also use this new technology that the director helped invent named “The Beast”. You can read all about that along with some other details when you hit the jump.
