This summer it was reported that David Goyer would write the Godzilla reboot brewing over at Legendary.  The news gave Matt pause at the time, and I tend to agree.  Goyer is hit (The Dark Knight) or miss (The Unborn), and its not entirely clear how responsible he is for the hits.  We’ll have to find other things to worry about, though, since Heat Vision reports Legendary has hired Max Borenstein to write Godzilla.  Wisely, Borenstein has not yet amassed a series of credits by which Matt and I would judge him.  But you’ll see “Written by Max Borenstein” on a number of films over the next few years.  He just turned in the latest draft of Art of the Steal to producers Zac Efron and Kevin McCormick.  He entered into the Legendary family earlier this year with the assignment to rewrite The Seventh Son.  Last (but certainly not least), Borenstein is working on the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi, also for Legendary.  In other words, Borenstein is a fresh up-and-comer, which seems the right fit for director Gareth Edwards, who made waves in 2010 with his microbudget feature debut Monsters.

Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing alongside Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers.  Warner Bros. will distribute Godzilla as part of their ongoing relationship with Legendary.

David Goyer to Write GODZILLA Reboot

David Goyer is set to write Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Godzilla reboot.  Deadline reports that Goyer will write a screenplay based off a draft by David Callaham.  While Mike Fleming raves about how Legendary Pictures is smart to get a pro like Goyer on board because he’s had so much success launching franchises, but let’s look at the films Goyer directed because those are the scripts that are almost certainly 100% his: Blade: Trinity, The Invisible, and The Unborn.  All of those movies are terrible.  What about his ABC series Flash Forward?  Also terrible, and then rightfully canceled.  Yes, Goyer has a track record of having a screenwriting credit on movies that make a lot of money, but that doesn’t mean he writes good movies.

I’m also wary that “Legendary intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible,” because that’s not what I want out of a Godzilla movie.  You can have authentic characters, but I don’t want “authenticity” out of a giant mutant lizard whose hobbies include destroying metropolitan areas and fighting other giant monsters.

Gareth Edwards to Direct GODZILLA

Gareth Edwards will direct the latest iteration of Godzilla for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.  According to Heat Vision, Edwards will work with a yet-to-be-named writer (Dave Callaham of The Expendables was originally tapped to pen the script) in developing Godzilla (a property that Legendary gathered the rights to back in March 2010).

The British filmmaker, known for his knack for creating stellar digital effects at rock-bottom prices, has gained a lot of steam of late with the release of his sci-fi film Monsters which premiered at SXSW in 2010 before picking up distribution from Magnet Releasing in October.  In addition to landing Godzilla, Edwards was also recently tapped to work alongside Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov in writing/directing a “futuristic sci-fi project.“  If you’re looking for more from Edwards, you can click here to check out an exclusive interview we conducted with the fast-rising filmmaker back in October.

Darren Aronofsky Discusses BLACK SWAN at Length in Paris; Jokes About Wanting to Remake GODZILLA

Great news for those who don’t live in any of the 18 major cities where Black Swan is currently playing. The film, which had a limited release on December 3, will be expanded to more than 1,000 theaters nationwide by December 22 (find out where on Foxsearchlight.com). But at least American moviegoers won’t have to wait until next year, as is the case in France where the movie is set for February 9.

Almost two months ahead of its release, Darren Aronofsky attended a special press screening last night at the MK2 Bibliothèque, on the right bank of the Seine. Flanked by a moderator and translator, the director took the stage at the end to discuss the film, reveal his drunken evening with Natalie Portman and how he has “always wanted to remake Godzilla.” What, you ask? More details after the jump.

Legendary Pictures to Have Godzilla to Fight Another Monster or Monsters in New Movie

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: September 21st, 2010 at 9:35 am

Legendary Pictures is currently at work on bringing Godzilla back to the big screen and giving him the feature film he deserves after the 1998 flop.  Bleeding Cool has some new details to report on the project, which is slated to hit theaters in 2012.  The biggest cause for excitement is that, “There’s going to be another monster, or monsters, that Godzilla will fight. Not having this goes against the ‘spirit of the character’.”  If this is the case, then who should Godzilla square off against?  Mothra?  Megalon?  Mechagodzilla?

Hit the jump for more details on how the new Godzilla is planning to stay true to the old Godzilla.

Legendary Pictures Unveils First Image of GODZILLA Plus Watch the Demo of the GODZILLA Augmented Reality Installation at Comic-Con

After deciding to wade into the rich – but potentially radioactive waters – of another Godzilla reboot last year, Legendary Pictures has been busy prepping their new 200-ton baby for its planned 2012 rebirth. The studio released the first image of the misunderstood giant at Comic-Con over the weekend; along with hosting an augmented reality T-shirt promo at the studio’s booth that is either really awesome or really, really anticlimactic… perhaps depending on how long you’ve been hanging around the exhibitor’s hall. Artwork and video are after the jump.

Is This Our First Glimpse of the New GODZILLA?

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 6th, 2010 at 8:58 am

It’s not much to go on, but we may have our very first glimpse of what Godzilla will look like in the upcoming reboot.  Despite the relative failure of Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Godzilla, there’s a lot of money to be made off the monster movie franchise.  Sure enough, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. will try their hand at breaking off a piece of that Kit Kat bar with a recently announced Godzilla flick in development for a 2012 release.

Twitch discovered an image on Flickr of a bust accompanied by the following: “I was told by a good friend in the movie biz that this was one of the designs they were considering for the new 3D Godzilla!”  The design is interesting (very angular), and I could see that face being very scary when embiggened on screen.  It’s still completely unconfirmed that this model has anything to with the project, but feel free to check out the full image for yourself after the jump. [UPDATE: Bloody-Digusting says this is NOT from the Godzilla remake.]

Legendary Pictures Nabs GODZILLA Rights; Sets Sights for a Destructive 2012

Godzilla, the fire-breathing behemoth that loves to terrorize Japan and fight giant moths, will make a return to U.S. cinemas soon. Last August, we reported that Legendary Pictures was eyeing the monster franchise and today we received a press release stating that Legendary has finally struck a deal with Toho for the rights to create a new film with Warner Bros. co-financing and co-producing the picture, with a planned 2012 release. Those familiar with the franchise might recall that the last major reboot of Godzilla was directed by Roland Emmerich in 1998, and many can only pray that the gamma radiation emitted from Godzilla’s body doesn’t drive Legendary Pictures crazy enough to give him the film again. Surely, if this happens, Emmerich’s global doomsday scenario in 2012 might just occur…or maybe small riots of Godzilla fans.

Roland Emmerich’s GODZILLA Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: November 21st, 2009 at 8:01 am

Godzilla movie image (3).jpg

Recently, I reviewed Waterworld. Now I’m talking about 1998′s disaster opus Godzilla. These are two of the biggest flops of the 1990′s. Overhyped and overproduced, and expensive as all get out, perhaps they’re hitting Blu-ray in the hopes of eeking out profits. Someone thought they might have had something here, but when Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin came off of Independence Day, this was going to be the next big thing, but instead they misfired. My review of 1998′s Godzilla after the jump.

Will Legendary Pictures Let GODZILLA Go Stomping Through Cities Again?

The towering star of countless Toho films and one Blue Oyster Cult song is possibly getting another big budget, American relaunch under the Legendary Pictures banner, the same fine folks who re-launched another languishing icon, Batman, for Warner Brothers in 2005. Could this be the film to launch Big G into the hearts and minds of a whole new generation of little big monster fans? Take a deep, irradiated breath and read more after the jump.
