Many people (myself included) were counting director Alfonso Cuaron’s ambitious sci-fi pic Gravity as one of their most anticipated films of 2012.  Well, now we’re all gonna have to wait a little longer, as Warner Bros. has lifted the film off of its November release date and set it for sometime in 2013.  This is a big bummer, but the film most likely has some insane visual effects work to finish in post-production.  Sandra Bullock stars as an astronaut stranded in space, and she’s apparently the only actor onscreen for the majority of the film.  Though I’m sad to have to wait, I’m confident that the move was made in the film’s best interest.  I’d rather have the Gravity Cuaron intends to release rather than a rushed version.  It’s also entirely possible that Warner Bros. just felt that their slate was too crowded to premiered Gravity.  In addition to The Hobbit, they have Argo, Gangster Squad, and The Great Gatsby all opening this fall.

Hit the jump for more, including new dates for Gangster Squad and Beautiful Creatures.

Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY Filled with Long Shots; Unbroken 17-Minute Opening Confirmed

Alfonso Cuaron crafted some remarkable unbroken shots in Children of Men, and it was previously rumored that he would be upping his game for his new movie, GravityBack in 2010, we reported that the movie would open with a single, 20-minute shot.  Today, we’ve learned that while the opening scene will be an unbroken 17-minute shot (way to slack off, Cuaron).  Additionally, long takes will run throughout the film.

Hit the jump for more.  The sci-fi drama stars Sandra Bullock as an astronaut who fights to return home after her space station suffers a catastrophe.  Gravity opens in 3D on November 21st.

Sandra Bullock Says No Make-Up for Actors in Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 3rd, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming sci-fi film Gravity has already made some bold moves.  The film reportedly has little dialogue, long takes, and now Sandra Bullock says the actors won’t be wearing make-up.  That may not seem like a big deal, but imagine your face blown up to the size of a movie screen and then projected in 3D.  Of course, it’s not a totally bizarre choice since the movie takes place in outer space and centers on an astronaut (Bullock) who’s struggling to find a way home after her space station is damaged.  Putting on eye-shadow and lipstick probably isn’t “Priority #1″ in that situation.

Hit the jump for what Bullock had to say about filming as well as her elaboration on why co-star George Clooney doesn’t plan on doing another 3D movie after this one.  Gravity opens November 21st.

Collider’s 15 Most Anticipated Blockbusters of 2012

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 24th, 2011 at 8:37 am

As 2011 comes to a close, it’s time to look forward to the movies set to open in 2012. While many are busy compiling their Top 10 lists from 2011, we thought it’d be a good time to run down the list of our 15 most anticipated blockbusters of the coming year. Will The Avengers deliver as the culmination of four years worth of Marvel movies? Just how much of a prequel to Alien is Prometheus? Will The Dark Knight Rises be the greatest movie ever made in the history of movies and awesomeness? There are a lot of unknowns, and we’ve learned that sometimes the best behind-the-scenes talent can still make a stinker (Cowboys & Aliens), but we’re hoping for more than a few pleasant surprises (a la X-Men: First Class) to appease us in 2012. Hit the jump to check out our list.

First Synopses for Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY and Focus Features 2012 Slate Including SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 19th, 2011 at 3:17 pm

We’ve got a few synopses to share with you today. First up is the very first logline for director Alfonso Cuaron’s ambitious 3D sci-fi flick Gravity. While all we’ve previously known about the mysterious project is that Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play astronauts, and Bullock occupies much of the screentime alone, stranded in space. This synopsis sheds a bit more light on what to expect, and Gravity still stands as one of my most anticipated films from 2012.

Additionally, Focus Features has released a batch of synopses for their 2012 slate including Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, the apocalyptic flick Seeking a Friend for the End of the World starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, the 3D stop-motion comedy ParaNorman, and more. Producer David Heyman HARRY POTTER interview slice

With the DVD/Blu-ray release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 last week, Warner Bros. Home Video invited a number of reporters from around the world to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida to help promote its release.  While there, I got to speak with the cast as well as some of the filmmakers behind one of my favorite films of the year.  Over the last week I posted video interviews with director David Yates, Rupert Grint, Warwick Davis, Jason Isaacs, Evanna Lynch and Mark Williams, and James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley).  And for the last interview, I’ve got an extended conversation with producer David Heyman.

During the interview, Heyman talks about being at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and what impressed him, what fans always want to talk about when they approach him, his thoughts on WB home video pulling the Potter movies at the end of the year, his memories of making the franchise, if there’s a mega box set with new extras coming in the future, and if he thinks WB might re-release the movies theatrically in 3D down the road.  In addition, Heyman talked about other projects like Paddington Bear, Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity, his Beatles animated project, Page Eight sequels, and more. George Clooney Talks about Alfonso Cuaron’s Sci-Fi Film GRAVITY

Alfonso Cuaron‘s sci-fi feature Gravity is easily one of my most anticipated films of 2012.  The movie, which is Cuaron’s first since Children of Men, centers on “a female astronaut (played by Sandra Bullock) stranded on a space station after satellite debris slams into it and wipes out the rest of the crew.”  She then has to find a way to return home.  George Clooney plays a fellow astronaut who only features in the first act, but his role is reportedly “pivotal”.  Cloooney provided some brief elaboration to USA Today on his role, explaining his and Bullock’s characters “are tethered together, floating through space.”

Clooney also spoke about the challenges in the script (there’s reportedly very little dialogue) and about his first time starring in a 3D movie.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.  Gravity opens November 21, 2012.

WRATH OF THE TITANS, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, and Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY May Open in IMAX

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 21st, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Warner Bros. looks to be continuing their successful run of films in the IMAX format with three of their high profile 2012 releases. Wrath of the Titans, Jack the Giant Killer, and Gravity are all reportedly set to be released in IMAX. Wrath of the Titans is, of course, the sequel to 2010’s Clash of the Titans. The Jonathan Liebesman-helmed sequel stars Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Bill Nighy. Jack the Giant Killer is the epic fantasy from director Bryan Singer that tells the story of a young farmhand who unknowingly opens a gateway between our world and the world of the giants. That film stars Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Ewan McGregor.

Finally, Gravity is the highly anticipated sci-fi pic from visionary director Alfonso Cuaron. Plot details are scarce, but it presumably centers on an astronaut trying to return to Earth following a disaster in space. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star. Personally, I can’t wait to see Cuaron’s film in the pristine quality IMAX format. Coming Soon’s report states that all three films will be released in 3D, although Jack the Giant Killer wasn’t conceived in the format. Wrath of the Titans opens on March 30th, Jack the Giant Killer hits theaters on June 15th, and Gravity is slated for November 21st.

Now that the superhe—er—summer movie season is coming to an end, Warner Bros. is readying its end of year slate for its awards season hopefuls. We previously reported that Clint Eastwood’s biopic J. Edgar and Stephen Daldry’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly close had been set for October and December respectively, but now the films have firm release dates. Per Deadline, Leonardo DiCaprio-starred J. Edgar will open in limited release on Wednesday November 9th, with a wide release set merely two days later on November 11th, opposite the Adam Sandler comedy Jack and Jill and Tarsem Singh’s action film Immortals.

The studio has also dated the drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for a limited release on December 25th. Starring Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, the Scott Rudin-produced film will open nationwide on January 20th against Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire and the George Lucas-produced Red Tails. Alfonso Cuaron’s highly anticipated 3D film Gravity has been given a release date of November 12th, 2012. The sci-fi flick stars Bullock and George Clooney. Additionally, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has been pushed back from January to February 10th where it squares off against the Ryan Reynolds/Denzel Washington thriller Safe House and the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 3D.

Exclusive: Producer David Heyman Talks HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – PART 2, GRAVITY, DOGS OF BABEL, and a Lot More

Producer David Heyman Talks HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - PART 2 slice

With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 getting released this weekend, Warner Bros. held a press junket in New York City over the weekend and I was able to sit down with producer David Heyman for an extended interview. Before going any further, if you were nervous the final Harry Potter movie would somehow disappoint, I’m happy to say they nailed the landing and the finale is everything I’d hoped it’d be and more.  Trust me, you’re going to love it.  And get ready to cry in the theater.

During the interview, Heyman talked about making the final movie, has JK Rowling ever told him any secrets about the Potter universe that the public doesn’t know, what props does he have, the ending of the film and why they made certain choices, deleted scenes, Warner Bros., and future projects like The Adventures of Oscar Pill, his Beatles animated movie, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, Dogs of Babel with Steve Carell, and The Northlanders (which is a Vertigo comic).  Hit the jump to watch.

New Set Photos from THE HUNGER GAMES, PIRANHA 3DD, and GRAVITY [UPDATED]

New set photos from The Hunger Games, Piranha 3DD, and Gravity have leaked online.  The Hunger Games photos show some of the buildings like the Hall of Justice, an insignia that fans of the book will probably recognize (I’m reading the book soon!  I have a long plane ride ahead of me!), and a first look at Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket.  The Piranha 3DD set photos show the water park where the sequel’s mayhem will go down (how does a freshwater fish survive in a chlorinated water park?  Fuck you, that’s how) as well as some grisly corpses.  Finally, the set photos from Gravity aren’t really set photos as much as they simply provide a first look at Sandra Bullock with her character’s short hair and bruise make-up.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos.  The Hunger Games is set for March 23, 2012.  Piranha 3DD opens November 23rd.  Gravity currently has no release date, but expect it in 2012.

[Update: We've been asked to remove the set images from The Hunger Games]

Exclusive: Producer David Heyman Talks HARRY POTTER and Reveals He’s Doing an Animated Movie Using 10 Beatles Songs – UPDATED

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: April 13th, 2011 at 5:33 pm

At this year’s CinemaCon (formerly ShoWest) I got to speak to producer David Heyman twice.  The first time was right before the Warner Bros. presentation where Heyman and Harry Potter producer David Barron showed some awesome looking footage from the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.  You can watch the red carpet interview here and here’s my recap of the footage.

A short time later, I was backstage with Heyman and we continued our conversation.  During the ten or so minutes, we talked about the footage they decided to show from Harry Potter, will there be an “Ultimate Box Set” on DVD/Blu-ray, what props he took home from set (he has some of the horcruxes!!), and he revealed that he had just “closed the deal on some Beatles songs, and we’re gonna do an animated film, a musical animated film using Beatles songs, with a love story between a dung beetle and a lady bug.”  Hit the jump for more.

UPDATE: Apple Corps Ltd. (the group that represents The Beatles) have contacted me to clarify The Beatles involvement in the animated movie. Here’s what they sent me:

Contrary to recent reports, no original Beatles master recordings will be featured in the forthcoming David Heyman (Harry Potter) produced animated film. The as-yet-unnamed film will feature cover versions of 10 songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

So while the music will be used, it’s cover songs. However, with the right artists, the soundtrack could be awesome.  Original story after the jump

CinemaCon: Warner Bros. President Jeff Robinov Talks THE GREAT GATSBY, GRAVITY, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD and More

by Jason Barr    Posted: March 31st, 2011 at 5:44 pm

Earlier today at CinemaCon, Warner Bros. held a panel with president Jeff Robinov during which he discussed some of the studio’s upcoming projects. In addition to reiterating the studio’s enthusiasm for projects such as The Hobbit, Dark Shadows, and the Clint Eastwood/Beyonce team-up that is A Star Is Born, Robinov also mentioned much anticipated projects such as The Great Gatsby (starring Leonardo DiCaprio), Mad Max: Fury Road, and Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity (starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock).

While there have been some questions regarding the status of both George Miller‘s Mad Max installment and Gravity, any time the head of a studio discusses projects as being in the studio’s short-term forecast, you can be sure the wheels are turning on said films.  Steve will have a lot more on the WB panel and what was shown, but for now, consider these projects on the immediate horizon.

Confirmed: Louis Leterrier Will Direct Sci-Fi Disaster Film “G” (Formerly GRAVITY) After NOW YOU SEE ME

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 22nd, 2011 at 8:51 pm

louis-leterrier-g-slice

Several months ago, we learned Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans) was circling a disaster film (then called Gravity) with this cool premise: “a father who has to search for his lost child as the world stops spinning and Earth begins to lose its gravity.”  Leterrier has officially signed on to produce and direct the movie, now called G, for Universal Pictures.  The project is based on an original idea by producer Guymon Casady (The Expendables) that has drawn comparisons to The Day After Tomorrow and Taken. Leterrier, Casady, and fellow producers Mark Gordon (2012), George Nolfi and Michael Hackett (The Adjustment Bureau) are currently looking for writers to turn the visually rich logline into a script.

Heat Version confirms that Leterrier will first direct Now You See Me, a heist thriller that pits FBI agents against “a super team of the world’s greatest illusionists.”  Leterrier previously demonstrated a penchant for single-letter titles with his interest in the acclaimed comic book Y: The Last Man.  I believe Y: The Last Man will reach the screen before I die (hopefully after I read it), but it seems increasingly unlikely that Leterrier will own the “Directed by” credit.  Leterrier has two “go” projects on his plate, while last we checked he was struggling to find financing for Y.  No matter — Now You See Me has potential, and G sounds positively cool.

Louis Leterrier to Direct NOW YOU SEE ME

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 17th, 2011 at 9:58 pm

Despite the film’s critical drubbing, the financial success of Clash of the Titans ($493 million worldwide) surely opened some doors for director Louis Letterier (especially once he handed the franchise keys to Jonathan Liebesman).  According to The Playlist, the heist thriller Now You See Me lies behind Door #1.  Now You See Me is a spec script from Edward Ricourt and Boaz Yakin (Prince of Persia) about “a crack FBI squad in a game of cat-and-mouse against a super team of the world’s greatest illusionists, who pull off a series of daring bank heists during their performances and showers the profits on to their audiences.”  Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek) will produce alongside Yakin and Bobby Cohen (Revolutionary Road).

Leterrier confirms to The Playlist that he’s still attached to Gravity, a high concept disaster flick where the Earth stops spinning and loses its gravitational pull.  There’s also the looming possibility of a Y: The Last Man adaptation; Leterrier recently suggested the 60-issue comic series may work best as a TV show.  However, both of those projects are further down the to-do list.  We’ll see if Now You See Me is up next for Leterrier, or if he’d prefer to knock on a few more doors first.
