First Trailer and Poster for HOPE SPRINGS Starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell

Steve Carell has moved up from The 40 Year Old Virgin to a marriage counselor for Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep in Hope Springs.  The film, formerly titled Great Hope Springs, centers on Arnold (Jones) and Maeve (Streep) Soames, a middle-aged couple who find that their marriage has gone stale after 30 years.  In a last ditch effort to save their relationship, they seek the help of marriage counselor Dr. Bernie Feld (Carell).  The trailer has some great character moments and it’s nice to see Jones and Streep playing some plain old ordinary people for a change, though they play them rather well.  Hope Springs, written by Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones), will reunite Streep with The Devil Wears Prada director, David Frankel.  The romantic comedy, which opens August 10th, also stars Elisabeth Shue and Jean Smart. New Images from MOONRISE KINGDOM, ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT, GREAT HOPE SPRINGS, and RUBY SPARKS

We’ve got a few new images to share with you today.  Briefly:

• Moonrise Kingdom – Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton and Bill Murray star in writer-director Wes Anderson’s latest film.  The story centers on two 12-year-olds who fall in love at summer camp in 1965 and run away together.  The film opens on May 25th.
• Ice Age: Continental Drift – The fourth film in the Ice Age franchise follows the prehistoric characters during the breakup of Pangea and the splitting of the continents.  The film opens in 3D on July 13th.
• Great Hope Springs – Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones star as a married couple seeking a weekend of counseling from a therapist played by Steve Carell.  The film opens on August 10th.
• Ruby Sparks – Directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton’s long-awaited follow-up to Little Miss Sunshine stars Paul Dano as a creatively blocked, once-great novelist who writes his dream girl (Zoe Kazan) who then comes to life.  The film opens on July 25th.

Sony Moves GREAT HOPE SPRINGS from December to August 10; SPARKLE Pushed Back a Week to August 17

Sony has decided to move Great Hope Springs more than four months away from its initial December 14 release date.  The typical pattern is to push the release later on the calendar, but the dramedy led by Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, and Jean Smart will instead premiere much sooner on August 10.  The last collaboration between Streep and director David Frankel, The Devil Wears Prada, hit theaters in the summer of 2006 and ended up with over $124 million domestic.  Perhaps Sony is chasing that success, though the story is very different in tone: Great Hopes Springs follows a married couple (Streep and Jones) who undergo a weekend of intense marriage counseling.

To make room on August 10, Variety reports the studio pushed Sparkle back a week to August 17.  Jordin Sparks, Tika Sumpter, Carmen Ejogo, and Whitney Houston star in the remake of the 1976 musical about a Motown girl group inspired by The Supremes. Hit the jump for synopses for both movies.

Tommy Lee Jones to Join Meryl Streep and Steve Carell in GREAT HOPE SPRINGS

Tommy Lee Jones is the latest actor to join the cast of Great Hope Springs. Directed by David Frankel, Meryl Streep and Steve Carell are poised to star in the film that centers on a longtime couple who decides to undergo intense marriage counseling. Jones will play Streep’s husband, while Carell is set to play a relationship guru. Mike Nichols was previously circling the project as his next directorial vehicle, but he subsequently dropped out.

The screenplay, written by Vanessa Taylor, landed on the Black List. Production on Great Hope Springs is set to start this August, with a 4^th quarter 2012 release date being eyed. Steve Carell in Talks to Join Meryl Streep in GREAT HOPE SPRINGS

Steve Carell has reportedly begun negotiations to co-star with Meryl Streep in Great Hope Springs.  Directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada), the story centers on a couple (played by Streep and an actor TBD) who, after 31 years of marriage, go into intense couples counseling to decide whether or not they should stay together.  According to Deadline, Carell is in talks to play the couple’s marriage therapist, Dr. Feld.

With his exit from The Office scheduled to air this Spring, Carell is set to become a ubiquitous presence in mainstream movies.  He’ll next be seen this summer in the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and after he shoots Great Hope Springs, he’ll move on to Burt Wonderstone.  Carell is also reportedly attached to Mail-Order Groom with Tina Fey, Get Smart 2 (which he also wrote), Raised by Wolfs, The Abstinence Teacher, A Boyfriend for My Wife, and Of All the Things.

Meryl Streep to Reteam with Director David Frankel for GREAT HOPE SPRINGS

Last year, we reported that Meryl Streep was circling Great Hope Springs with Mike Nicholas at the helm.  The story “follows a middle-aged couple who after thirty years of marriage attend an intense counseling weekend to examine the intimacy issues that are threatening their marriage.”  Today, we’ve received a press release announcing that Streep is in final negotiations to take the role, but that it won’t be with Nichols in the director’s chair.  Instead, the film is now being helmed by David Frankel who directed Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

The press release makes no mention of James Gandolfini or Philip Seymour Hoffman, who were rumored to play Streep’s husband and therapist, respectively.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

Meryl Streep, James Gandolfini, and Philip Seymour Hoffman may be signing on to Mike Nichols’ Great Hope Springs.  Streep and Gandolfini would play a married couple who undergo intense couples therapy to see if they want to continue their 30-year-marriage.  Hoffman would play the therapist.  According to Vulture, no deals have been signed, but all parties are highly interested, and recently even did a table read.  Jeff Bridges was set to play the husband this past June, but the deal never came together.

Steep is currently attached to the mother-daughter comedy Mommy & Me with Tina Fey as well as a Margaret Thatcher biopic.  Gandolfini recently signed on to the indie Violet & Daisy starring Saoirse Ronan and Carey Mulligan.  Hoffman is set to costar in George Clooney’s Farragut North and Paul Thomas Anderson’s tentatively-titled, postponed-indefinitely religious drama The Master.

Mike Nichols in Talks to Direct GREAT HOPE SPRINGS Starring Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges

How much talent can you cram into one movie? Mandate Pictures is apparently attempting to find this out (as Mythbusters has yet to tackle this question) with their upcoming film Great Hope Springs. TheWrap is reporting today that the production company that helped bring us such recent films as Whip it! and Drag Me to Hell (one of my personal favorites from 2009), is now in talks with legendary director Mike Nichols (The Graduate and most recently Charlie Wilson’s War) with the hopes of picking up the award-winning director to helm their potential awards-season contender dramedy, Great Hope Springs.

You may be thinking to yourself, “Potential awards-season contender? It doesn’t even have a director yet.” Yes, but Nichols isn’t the only one in negotiations.  How do you feel about adding Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep to the mix?  Hit the jump for more.
