Greta Gerwig Exclusive Interview; Talks NO STRINGS ATTACHED, Whit Stillman’s DAMSELS IN DISTRESS, and the Remake of ARTHUR

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 20th, 2011 at 3:42 pm

If you’re an indie film watcher, you already know Greta Gerwig.  But while many of us are familiar with her great work in such films as The House of the Devil, Baghead and Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg, she’s still not on everyone’s radar.  But that’s about to change.  That’s because Gerwig plays one of Natalie Portman’s friends in No Strings Attached, she stars opposite Russell Brand in the remake of Arthur, and she’s also in Whit Stillman’s (Metropolitan, Barcelona, The Last Days of Disco) new movie Damsels in Distress.  What that means is…she’s right on the verge of being a mainstream star.

Anyhow, I recently got to do an extended interview with Gerwig and we talked about all three of her upcoming projects.  If you’ve been waiting (like me for Whit Stillman to finally make another movie, the great news is she thinks Stillman might not stop with Damsels in Distress.  In addition to spending way too much time talking about Stillman, Gerwig talks about her love of Elizabeth Meriwether and Ivan Reitman, making No Strings Attached, what making Arthur was really like, and so much more.  Hit the jump to either watch, read or listen to the interview:

Quentin Tarantino’s Top 20 Films of 2010

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 2nd, 2011 at 8:54 pm

As we enter 2011, Quentin Tarantino has revealed his top ten films of 2010.  The list includes the usual suspects (Toy Story 3, The Social Network) along with some fun surprises like Tangled and, shall we say “peculiar” surprises like Robin Hood.  Tarantino didn’t provide any comment on his choices, but said of his number ten pick, Enter the Void,

“Hands down best credit scene of the year? Maybe best credit scene of the decade. One of the greatest in cinema history.”

Hit the jump for Tarantino’s list along with a look at the opening credits for Enter the Void.

GREENBERG DVD Review

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: August 30th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

It seems like every two or three years Ben Stiller makes up for the couple mediocre family comedies he makes (Madagascar, Meet the Fockers) by starring in a great comedy like Tropic Thunder (which he also directed) or in this case, leading an amazing character driven film like Greenberg from writer/director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale). With is latest venture, Baumbach brings yet another peculiar, somewhat unlikeable yet inexplicably charming character to the table brought to life effortlessly by Stiller, an actor who usually keeps his comedy light, but isn’t afraid about going to the dark side. So without further adieu, hit the jump to dive into the wholly unique mind of Greenberg.

Michelle Williams in Talks to Star in Noah Baumbach’s THE EMPEROR’S CHILDREN

Michelle Williams is in negotiations to play one of the lead roles in director Noah Baumbach’s The Emperor’s Children. As we previous reported, the film centers on three Brown University graduates who are approaching their 30′s and are struggling to realize what their lives expectations are. The plot’s timeframe takes place during the events leading up to and directly following 9/11.  According to TheWrap, Williams would likely be playing the character of Danielle Minkoff, a TV documentary producer from the Midwest.  If she signs on, she’ll join actors Keira Knightley, Eric Bana, and Richard Gere.

Baumbach has also been linked to an adaptation of the children’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins with Ben Stiller, who starred in Baumbach’s latest movie, Greenberg.  It’s unknown which project will be his next.

Rhys Ifans Video Interview GREENBERG – He Also Talks About Playing Xenophilius Lovegood in HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS

Expanding into more theaters this weekend is Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) Greenberg.  Starring Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, and Rhys Ifans, the film is an awesome look at a few people at a crossroads in their lives.  Filled with honest dialogue and popular Los Angeles landmarks, Greenberg feels like a New York movie – except it’s set in L.A.  As a resident of the sprawling city, the movie hit me hard.  Can’t recommend it enough.

To help promote the film, I recently got to speak with Rhys Ifans.  We talked about how did he prepare for an L.A. movie even though he’s from England, working for Noah Baumbach and improv, and we even discussed his next movie as he plays Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  Hit the jump to check it out:

Greta Gerwig Video Interview GREENBERG

While many who watch indie movies are familiar with Greta Gerwig from her work in such films as The House of the Devil and Baghead, she’s making her mainstream debut this weekend in Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) Greenberg, as she’s one of the three leads.  While she’s only been in a few films, she more than holds her own in Greenberg and I’m extremely confident you’re going to see a lot more of her soon.

Ben Stiller Video Interview GREENBERG

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: March 25th, 2010 at 8:13 pm

ben_stiller_01.jpgWith Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) Greenberg finally expanding into more theaters tomorrow, it’s time for me to help promote this fantastic film by posting the video interviews I got to do with the cast.  Tonight I’m posting my interview with Ben Stiller, and tomorrow look for Greta Gerwig and Rhys Ifans.

While the entire cast was great in the movie, it was the script and direction by Noah Baumbach that really got me.  He’s crafted an honest film populated with believable people in real life situations.  The movie actually feels more like a documentary than  a piece of fiction.  Trust me, it’s great cinema and something absolutely worth seeing.

When I got to speak with Stiller, we talked about the tone of the film, filming and walking in Los Angeles (where the movie takes place), and we even discussed Zoolander 2.  I think the interview turned out really well so take a look:

GREENBERG Review

slice_thinner_greenberg_01.jpg

Usually, if a film has bad performances, you can’t care about the characters because you’ll always see the actor obscuring their role.  Greenberg turns that problem on its head by having great performances for characters you could not care less about.  Unless you have lived something in your life that relates to a character in the movie, then you will simply find these people and their problems irritating.  Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, and Rhys Ifans make you believe their characters are real people who are a chore to spend two hours with.

by Sara Wayland    Posted: March 23rd, 2010 at 4:55 am

A New BETWEEN TWO FERNS with Zach Galifianakis and Ben Stiller

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 17th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

If you haven’t heard of Zach Galifainakis’ Between Two Ferns series, you need to get on board.  If you don’t love them, you need to get off life.  For those who don’t know, the show is styled like a public access interview show where Galifianakis takes on the persona of an obnoxious interviewer while various celebrities play it like they would any regular interview.  Previous guests include Bradley Cooper, Charlize Theron, and Conan O’Brien among others.

His latest “interview” is with Ben Stiller.  Stiller, who’s promoting his upcoming film Greenberg, gets ripped apart by Galifianakis The sketch opens with Ben Stiller being credited as “Actor, ‘Duplex’” and it gets worse for Stiller from there.

Opening March 19, in limited release, is Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) Greenberg.  Starring Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Chris Messina, Greenberg is about trying to find your way in Los Angeles.  I saw a screening recently and loved it.  While the performances were great all around, it was the script and direction by Noah Baumbach that really got me.  He’s crafted an honest film populated with believable people and real life situations.  The movie actually feels more like a documentary than  a piece of fiction.  Trust me, it’s great cinema and something absolutely worth seeing.

This weekend I’m in NYC and got a chance to speak with the cast earlier today.  While I’ll have the interviews online closer to release, I was given 5 clips from the film and a bunch of high resolution images and wanted to share them with you tonight.  Hit the jump to check everything out:

Focus Features has released a featurette from Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) Greenberg.  Starring Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Chris Messina, Greenberg is about trying to find your way in Los Angeles.  While the movie doesn’t get released until March 26, I recently saw a screening and loved it.  While the performances were great all around, it was the script and direction by Noah Baumbach that really got me.  He’s crafted an honest film populated with believable people and real life situations. Since I don’t know how much more I can say…just know this is a film you should definitely be looking forward to.  Watch the featurette after the jump to learn more.  I’ve also provided the synopsis.

Trailer for Noah Baumbach’s GREENBERG Starring Ben Stiller

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 23rd, 2009 at 4:48 pm

slice_thinner_greenberg_01.jpg

The first trailer for Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) latest film Greenberg has popped up online and I like that it’s difficult to pin down what the movie is about.  It’s not that the tone is all over of the place and in general it looks like aimless-guy-learns-relationships-make-life-important, but there are so many little jokes and tiny moments that the movie looks bigger than such a simple premise. Also, Baumbach’s previous work (he also did Margot at the Wedding) supports that conclusion.  And hey!  Ben Stiller giving a real performance!  Haven’t seen that in a long time.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and brief synopsis.  Greenberg hits theaters on March 12, 2010.

Focus Features Sets 2010 Release Dates for Six Films

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 12th, 2009 at 4:04 pm

The Eagle of the Ninth movie image Channing Tatum slice.jpg

The other day we premiered the first images and official synopses from Focus Features Greenberg, The Eagle of the Ninth, and Somewhere.  Now, thanks to Focus sending out a press release, we have an idea when some of them are getting released.

On March 12th, director Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg will hit theaters for a limited release. The film stars Ben Stiller.  After that we’re getting Thomas Balmes Babies on April 16th and director Anton Corbijn’s The American on September. 1st.  That’s the George Clooney assassin film.  Sometime in the third quarter will be Kevin Macdonald’s Roman adventure The Eagle of the Ninth, and in November It’s Kind of a Funny Story gets released.  The big question mark is Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, which still doesn’t have a release date.

The thing to remember is release dates change all the time, so before you get all worked up trying to decide what a September or March release date means, as other films try for the same day it might change.  Finally, if you missed all those images and synopses we posted, check them out here.  To read the full press release Focus Features sent us, hit the jump:
