The CW and GREEN LANTERN Writers Bringing GREEN ARROW to Television

The CW already delved into DC Comics universe with their recently concluded Superman series Smallville, and writers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim brought Green Lantern to the big screen last summer. But now THR reports the network and writing duo are teaming up for Arrow, a small screen adaptation of Green Arrow which is currently in development. It’s not surprising considering the response to the hero’s appearance throughout a few seasons on Smallville was pretty strong, however, Justin Hartley, who played Green Arrow in the series, is not attached to this new project. Berlanti and Guggenheim will executive produce the series which serves as the second superhero property in development for Berlanti Productions along with Booster Gold at SyFy. There’s a gaping hole for a fanboy presence on The CW now so we’ll have to wait and see if the Green Arrow can fill it.

SyFy Turning DC Comics BOOSTER GOLD into TV Series

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: November 22nd, 2011 at 1:10 pm

While fairytales are all the rage on TV right now with Once Upon a Time and Grimm hitting networks, comic books are still alive and kicking. THR has word that SyFy has ordered a pilot script for a one-hour drama series adaptation of the DC Comics franchise Booster Gold. The series will be brought to life by Greg Berlanti, the man who has had plenty of experience with superheroes as of late with ABC’s decent but canned No Ordinary Family and Warner Bros. big screen take on Green Lantern this past summer. Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe) will write the script and executive produce the potential series which will follow a washed-up athlete from the future who travels back to the present in hopes of becoming the greatest super hero of all time. Instead of chasing criminals, however, his main priority is chasing fame and money. But Booster Gold discovers that being a hero takes more than just a megawatt smile, and that the future doesn’t happen without first protecting the present.

The character actually made an appearance in the final season of Smallville earlier this year, so that might be the push the property needed to make it to television on its own. While SyFy used to be a place for laughs at bad science fiction, recent turns with Being Human and Battlestar Galactica have made it a decent home for some quality entertainment every now and then.

Warner Bros. President Jeff Robinov Talks GREEN LANTERN 2; Misunderstands Why GREEN LANTERN Failed

Now that all big four superhero movies have come out this summer, Green Lantern is clearly the biggest disappointment of the bunch.  Rather than charge into production on a sequel, Warner Bros. was forced to take a tepid wait-and-see approach to the international box office and home entertainment sales.  But Green Lantern 2 is certainly still in the studio’s mind and President Jeff Robinov believes that the problem wasn’t the concept but the execution.  However, the flaws he sees in the execution weren’t the ones that sunk the movie.

Hit the jump for what Robinov said the sequel needs to do in order to “improve” on the original.

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke has sold his spec script, Haunted, to Warner Bros. with intent to direct the pic. According to Variety, Haunted will tell the classic haunted house story from the perspective of the ghost. In addition to his work on Supernatural and Haunted, Kripke also penned 2005′s Boogeyman starring, you guessed it, 7th Heaven‘s own Barry Watson. Haunted will mark his feature directorial debut. Green Lantern producer/screenwriter Greg Berlanti will co-produce Haunted alongside Kevin McCormick’s Langley Park label.

Since Martin Campbell is considered one of the industry’s premier action filmmakers, as the man behind two landmark James Bond films (GoldenEye and Casino Royale) and two Zorro films (The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro), it’s easy to see why he was brought in to helm the superhero action-adventure flick Green Lantern.  And, with veteran producer Donald De Line and producer/screenwriter Greg Berlanti also on board, the film is sure to be a blockbuster hit.

During a press conference at the film’s press day, Campbell, De Line and Berlanti talked about what it takes to create and launch a franchise like Green Lantern, condensing a great amount of source material into a movie that keeps fans of the character happy while also making it accessible for those unfamiliar with it, why they chose Hal Jordan as a starting point for the story, finding the right balance with how much of the film to have on Earth and how much to have in space, and how they hope to have some cool extras for the DVD/Blu-ray release. Martin Campbell also said that he’s not signed on to direct more Green Lantern films, at this point, that he hopes to do a small film next, and that there will be no more James Bond films in his future. Clash of the Titans bowed on April 2nd of this year, and went on to earn nearly $500 million worldwide.  It makes sense then, when we see on Box Office Mojo that Warner Bros. has targeted the same window to release the sequel — specifically, March 30, 2012.  Right now, Clash 2‘s only scheduled competition is The Croods, an animated comedy set in the prehistoric era.

Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) will direct Clash of the Titans 2, with plans to shoot in 3D.   Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson will write the script based on a treatment created with writer Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern).  Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, and Liam Neeson are expected to reprise their roles from the first film.  Click here for an interview in which producer Basil Iwanyk reveals a few details about their approach to the sequel.

Greg Berlanti Video Interview LIFE AS WE KNOW IT

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 13th, 2010 at 1:32 am

About a week ago I posted part of my video interview with director Greg Berlanti where he talked about Clash of the Titans 2, Green Lantern 2, and his ABC show No Ordinary Family.  With his movie Life As We Know It now playing in theaters, it’s time for the other part of the interview where he talked about making the movie.

During the interview we talked about the test screening process, how the movie is more grounded than typical romcoms that are filled with crazy Hollywood moments, the 25 or so minutes of deleted scenes that will be on the eventual DVD/Blu-ray release, and what has the last year been like for him juggling so many projects.  Hit the jump to watch:

Bradley Cooper Rumored to Be on the Shortlist to Play THE FLASH; Greg Berlanti Unlikely to Direct

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 11th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Once upon a time, Ryan Reynolds was in talks to star in the DC Comics superhero movie, The Flash.  The project stalled and Reynolds eventually went on to play another DC Comics superhero: Green Lantern.  Bradley Cooper (who is costarring with Reynolds in an untitled buddy-cop film) was one of the final contenders to play Green Lantern.  Now Moviehole is reporting that Cooper is on the shortlist to play The Flash.  And this is how we play “One Degree of Popular Actors Playing Superheroes”.

Moviehole notes that this is a very early rumor and screenwriter Greg Berlanti’s script, according to Deadline, isn’t even due until Christmas.  However, Cooper is at that sweet spot for a studio where he doesn’t command a ridiculous salary but is recognizable enough and reliable enough to lead a major franchise.  Cooper is currently filming on The Hangover 2, which is due out next year.  Hit the jump for more on The Flash.

Josh Duhamel Video Interview LIFE AS WE KNOW IT

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 7th, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Opening this weekend is director Greg Berlanti’s Life As We Know It and it stars Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Josh Lucas, Christina Hendricks and Hayes MacArthur.  The romantic dramedy is about two people (Heigl and Duhamel) that only have one thing in common: their dislike for each other and their love for their goddaughter, Sophie.  But when they suddenly become all Sophie has in the world, they’re forced to put their differences aside and live under one roof.

At the recent NYC press day for the film, I was able to interview Josh Duhamel.  While only scheduled for a print interview, Duhamel was kind enough to let me use my flip camera, so after the jump you can watch video of our conversation.  During the interview we talked about how the year has been going for him as he’s had a number of projects, what it’s like being the leading man in a big Hollywood release, what is he thinking about for future projects, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch:

Exclusive: Writer-Director Greg Berlanti on NO ORDINARY FAMILY, CLASH OF THE TITANS 2 and GREEN LANTERN 2

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 6th, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Greg Berlanti is having a good year.  Not only does his movie Life As We Know It get released this weekend, he has a series (No Ordinary Family) that just premiered on ABC, and he’s also working on The Flash, Green Lantern 2 and Clash of the Titans 2.  As you might imagine, when I found out I was going to be able to speak with him at the Life As We Know It press junket, I had a lot of questions.

Since we covered so many subjects, I decided to break up the interview into two parts.  For today’s part, Berlanti talks about No Ordinary Family, Green Lantern 2 and Clash of the Titans 2. Hit the jump for more:

Earlier today, we reported that Warner Bros. was offering the director’s chair to Tales from the Gangster Squad to Darren Aronofsky after Ben Affleck decided to pass on the project.  Latino Review is now reporting that Warner Bros. has some other major names lined up should Aronofsky choose to go another way (a way that would most likely involve retractable adamantium claws).  The five other candidates for the gig are Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend), Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum), Scott Cooper, Greg Berlanti (Life As We Know It), and Martin Campbell (Casino Royale).

Latino Review also reports that they’ve read the script for Tales from the Gangster Squad and “it’s all sorts of kickass.”  The story centers on Sgt. John O’ Mara and his off-the-record gang of LAPD officers who attempt to bring down legendary gangster Micky Cohen in the late 1940s.
