Negotiations are underway for Jennifer Connelly (Requiem for a Dream) and Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) to star in the indie drama, Writers. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Josh Boone who also wrote the original screenplay. The plot of Writers centers on the familial relationships between a well-established novelist (Kinnear), his ex-wife (Connelly) and their children: a college-age daughter and teenage son. THR reports that Judy Cairo (Crazy Heart) of Informant Media will produce the project. Her upcoming works include Hysteria, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy and Jonathan Pryce and The Expatriate, starring Olga Kurylenko and Aaron Eckhart.

Julianne Moore and Greg Kinnear are set to star in the indie comedy The English Teacher. The film will mark the feature directorial debut of TV helmer Craig Zisk (Weeds, Nip/Tuck), with a script by Dan and Stacy Chariton. Variety reports that the story centers on a high school English teacher (Moore) whose life takes a turn when a former star student returns after failing as a playwright in New York City. No word on Kinnear’s role, but I’m assuming he won’t be playing the student as Moore would have been two years old when he was born. The flick starts production next month in New York. Moore recently wrapped her role as Sarah Palin in Jay Roach’s HBO movie Game Change.

The first trailer for the Sarah Jessica Parker-starred I Don’t Know How She Does It has gone online. The romantic comedy, directed by Douglas McGrath (Emma) and written by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada), is based on the book by Allison Pearson, which tells the story of a working mom (Parker) trying to balance the many competing elements of her life. While it doesn’t necessarily look like a home run, the trailer seems a bit more promising than your standard “Kate Hudson is crazy but no one seems to notice” fare, if only because of the fantastic cast.
Parker stars alongside Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brosnan, Kelsey Grammar, Christina Hendricks, Olivia Munn, Seth Meyers and Jane Curtin. The Weinstein Company will release the flick on September 16th. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

The first trailer for Fox Searchlight’s Salvation Boulevard has been released. Starring Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Greg Kinnear and Jim Gaffigan, the comedy centers on the preacher of a mega church who frames an ex-hippie for a crime he didn’t commit. The flick premiered at Sundance where Matt wasn’t too thrilled by the finished product. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

In January, we found out that The History Channel had decided not to air The Kennedys, an 8-part miniseries focusing on the life and times of the Kennedy family with an all-star cast including cast that includes Greg Kinnear (John F. Kennedy), Katie Holmes (Jackie Kennedy), Barry Pepper (Robert F. Kennedy) and Tom Wilkinson (Joe Kennedy). There was hope the controversial miniseries, which has been criticized for its negative portrayal of the iconic political family, to air on Showtime but the cable network passed. Now THR reports The Kennedys has landed a premiere at ReelzChannel, a cable channel mostly dedicated to talking about and going behind the scenes of various movies. Hit the jump for more.

In my review of Higher Ground, I noted that religion is a tricky topic but that it was easy to mock it. Salvation Boulevard can barely even manage that. The story features a mega church and celebrity pastor and there’s great fun to be made at the absurdity of these elements in modern evangelical Christianity. Instead, co-writer and director George Ratliff uses this setting as the thinnest of backdrops for a chase movie that goes absolutely nowhere.

Greg Kinnear and Jane Curtin are the latest additions to the adaptation of Allison Pearson’s novel I Don’t Know How She Does It. The current cast includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Bronsnan and Kelsey Grammar, as well as recent additions Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Olivia Munn (The Daily Show), and Seth Meyers (SNL). Douglas McGrath (Infamous) directs from a script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada).
I Don’t Know How She Does It tells the story of a working mom (Parker) trying to balance the many competing elements of her life. Variety reports that Kinnear will play Parker’s husband, while Curtin will take on the role of Kinnear’s mother. The Weinstein Company will produce. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Pearson’s novel.

Today, straight out of left field, comes news from THR that the miniseries The Kennedys, will no longer air this spring on The History Channel. The network’s representative says, “Upon completion of the production of The Kennedys, History has decided not to air the 8-part miniseries on the network. While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.” So despite a name cast that includes Greg Kinnear (John F. Kennedy), Katie Holmes (Jackie Kennedy), Barry Pepper (Robert F. Kennedy) and Tom Wilkinson (Joe Kennedy), the series isn’t going to air on The History Channel. We’re bringing you the first images from films premiering at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and today we’ve got two films that will have their out-of-competition premieres at the festival: Win Win and Salvation Boulevard. Win Win features Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, and Jeffrey Tambor. The film comes from writer/director Tom McCarthy (The Visitor), and centers on an attorney (Giamatti) moonlighting as a high school wrestling instructor who stumbles upon a star athlete with a mother fresh out of rehab.
Salvation Boulevard is a comedy starring Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei, and Jim Gaffigan. The flick centers on the head of a mega-church (Brosnan) who frames an ex-hippie for a crime he didn’t commit. Hit the jump to check out images and a brief synopsis for both films. The 2011 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 20 – 30th.

With Sundance having announced their 2011 feature film line up, images for the selected films have begun to be released – case in point new stills from Terri and The Convincer (previously covered here). Terri, starring newcomer Jacob Wysocki and John C. Reilly (Cyrus), focuses on a lonely high school outcast (Wysocki) who slowly comes into his own. Stills from the film include director Azazel Jacobs talking with one of his young actors behind the scenes and an image of Reilly and Wysocki having what appears to be a stern conversation within the film. It’s hard to gauge from the stills whether Reilly will be going super serious (alla Magnolia) or outlandishly silly (see any of the Adam McKay films) or painfully funny (see Cyrus). Perhaps the “not knowing” is indicative of Reilly’s versatility. There are very few actors with the capability to pull of such opposite extremes of emotion with as much ease as Reilly does. Most people look forward to a new Brad Pitt performance or Johnny Depp performance; but for myself it is John C. Reilly’s performances that I eagerly anticipate.
The Convincer, a film noir directed by Jill Sprecher (Clockwatchers), concerns an insurance salesman who gets in way over his head. Stills from the film feature stars Greg Kinnear (As Good As It Gets), Billy Crudup (Almost Famous) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) pointing at one another and looking very serious. For the stills in question, hit the jump.

More often than not movies are used as recreational escapism. And rightfully so. There’s nothing wrong with zoning out in a chilled movie theater for ninety minutes or so. These recreational movies generally hit generic action, comedic and emotional beats. Love stories usually focus on the struggle to attain love, the pain of losing it, or both. In my opinion, it is a rare occasion when celluloid presents an honest and engaging love story to its audience. The Last Song starts out strong, but does it withstand its own emotional baggage? Hit the jump to find out.

After collaborating on the highly successful Bourne sequels, director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon’s third film together had everyone excited. Add in that Greengrass’ most recent non-Bourne movie was the great United 93 and fans were eagerly awaiting Green Zone. After an unorthodox shoot (Damon had to take a break in the middle to film The Informant) the film finally got stuck with an unfortunate March release date. Add in the fact that moviegoers were in the midst of a love affair with another Iraq War movie, The Hurt Locker, which won the Oscar for Best Picture just five days before Green Zone’s release and it would seem that the film was doomed to disappoint. The final film is a solid, yet imperfect thriller, despite Greengrass and Damon’s best efforts. Keep reading for more on the film and its DVD.

Critics who think a narrative adaption of The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters hit a kill screen should check with Seth Gordon first. The 2007 documentary tells the David vs. Goliath quest for the world record score on the arcade obsession Donkey Kong. Talk of a feature adaptation began almost immediately. Getting it out of development became another matter. Gordon says Kong is definitely on.
We caught up with the director after a screening of his new documentary Freakonomics (made with some of the highest-profile documentary directors in the business). Gordon responded, “You want to see my calendar, the roundtable set up for next week?” He continued, “there’s been a lot of interest from the agencies” and “it’s a “passion project for a handful of people at New Line.” He cautioned, however, “The odds are stacked against it … Just because it’s a movie and hardly any get made.”
Hit the jump for the full audio & transcript of the interview along with the full details on Kong, whether Johnny Depp is attached, how Freakonomics hits very close to home & whether there’s a music film in his future.

Here’s a couple quick pieces of casting news for your enjoyment. First up, Screen Daily reports that Ewan McGregor will play King Edward VIII in Madonna’s W.E. The English monarch abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga will play Simpson while Abbie Cornish will play a contemporary character in a parallel timeline. SD says it’s like Julie & Julia but it sounds more like 2002′s Possession to me.
Next up is a project I find far more interesting. According to Variety, Jennifer Connolley, Greg Kinner, and Marisa Tomei will join Pierce Brosnan, Jim Gaffigan, and Ed Harris in the comedy-thriller Salvation Boulevard. The film is about, “a former Deadhead who finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church who will do anything to protect their larger-than-life pastor.” That’s a great cast with a great premise so I hope that director George Ratliff (Joshua) can deliver a great film.

At the age of 17, Miley Cyrus is a multi-platinum recording artist, the star of her own successful television series, a best-selling author, a clothing designer, philanthropist and now dramatic film actress.
In The Last Song, the latest book-turned-film from literary superstar Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook), for which the lead character was specifically written for Cyrus, the triple threat plays Veronica “Ronnie” Miller, a troubled teen sent to spend the summer with her estranged father (Greg Kinnear) in a small Southern beach town. As he tries to reconnect with her through the only thing they have in common, their musical inclination with the piano, she meets a boy (Liam Hemsworth) with whom she begins to let her emotional guard down. Much like Nicholas Sparks’ other work, The Last Song is a story of family, friendship and salvation, along with first love and second chances.
During a press conference held to promote the film, co-stars and real-life loves Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth spoke to the press about making this romantic drama together. Check out what they had to say after the jump:
