The techno-speak in Guillermo del Toro's giant robot movie Pacific Rim might take a bit of getting used to, so the director has put together this new featurette that explains some of the terms. Ever wanted to know why it takes two people to pilot a Jaeger? Want to know what a "neural handshake" is or what "drift space" means? Check out the new video to find out!

The new featurette, introduced by del Toro, features Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky and Max Martini. Hit the jump to watch it. Pacific Rim opens July 12th.

Check out the new featurette below (via IGN):

Here’s the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

A couple of updates out of the camp of FX pilots. Unfortunately, it looks like Oscar-winning director Ang Lee will be tapping out of production on the drama pilot Tyrant, citing exhaustion from filming and promoting Life of Pi. The story centers on an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle East nation; Tyrant's pilot may be shooting in Morocco. The search for a replacement is currently underway.

For more on what Lee had to say about his departure from the project and for casting information on Guillermo del Toro's FX pilot, The Strain, hit the jump.

THR reports that Lee had the following to say in a statement regarding his departure from Tyrant:
"It is one of the most brilliant ideas for a series that I’ve seen and one about which I was very excited. However, after spending over four years making and promoting Life of Pi, I have recently realized that I need some rest. Because I cannot give 100 percent to this exciting project at this time, I cannot allow myself to do anything that may affect the potential for this exciting new series."
Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Mia Maestro (Frida) will star opposite Corey Stoll in The Strain, an adaptation of del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy. The project formally has a pilot order, but is also on the list for a possible 13-episode season pick-up. The thriller that tells the story of "Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his ...

As someone whose only firsthand experience with the Star Trek franchise comes by virtue of J.J. Abrams' two Trek films, I know I'm in over my head when the topic presents itself. When you mention Trek, you're referencing (either directly or indirectly) a rich legacy filled with peaks and valleys, genre-defining characters and moments, and an international fanbase that rivals any of pop-culture's most enduring titles. And yet here I am, with two films under my belt (both of which I enjoyed), talking about it. Obviously, I have nothing at stake with regards to Star Trek Into Darkness. Whether you like it or dislike it is of no consequence to me. My only aim today is to extend a humble word of caution to the Trek fans who have years of equity built-up in their beloved franchise: be careful not to dismiss or begrudge it solely because it's trying to appeal to the largest possible audience. Abrams' Trek films aren't above reproach, but they also aren't void of redeeming qualities. Try to at least acknowledge some of those qualities when tearing into them or risk coming off as someone whose real issue is that a bunch of people now enjoy this thing that you once considered yourself unique for liking.
All preachiness aside, this week's Top 5 includes several interviews from Star Trek Into Darkness, rumors surrounding Christopher Nolan being approached to direct James Bond 24, the first trailers for Marvel's new ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a new trailer for ...

Saturday at the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Festival, Guillermo del Toro was on hand to discuss his two greatest and most personal films: The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth. During the far-reaching conversation Del Toro gave updates on the currently in development Justice League Dark and the status of his HBO series Monster (based on the Japanese manga by author Naoki Urasawa).

On Justice League Dark, Del Toro revealed that his script features Constantine, The Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman and Zantanna as the team. He stated that there are other characters in the mix too (“everybody that doesn’t feel like a repeat”) – but any additional info would be too ‘spoilery’ for the hypothetical film. However Del Toro is still waiting for the go-ahead from Warner Brothers (perhaps box-office returns on Man of Steel and Pacific Rim will dictate it’s fate). Per Del Toro “If they [Warners] like the [script], I’ll do it; if not…” For additional highlights from the Q&A including an update on Monster and an all new trailer for his summer tent-pole robots-vs.-monsters flick Pacific Rim, hit the jump.

On Monster, Del Toro said that he just submitted the pilot script to HBO last week and that they’re reading it right now. He revealed his version is very respectful of Urasawa’s manga. Del Toro gained permission from Urasawa to adapt his work, only if he submitted to the author an outline for each episode of the theoretical first season. Del Toro was quick to chime that the ...

Marvel makes it look easy. That's what kept running through my head while watching Iron Man 3 Thursday night. Pumping out one solid standalone film after another with the overall goal of creating a whole that is equally, if not more, entertaining than its formidable parts can't be that easy. And yet, Marvel makes it seem that way. In a medium outside of their native reach no less. Granted, Iron Man 3 isn't without its flaws. But it doesn't have to be. It succeeds on the exact level it's meant to: in moving both the individual character and universal stories ahead in an entertaining and logical way. If "Marvel makes it looks easy" was my primary takeaway from IM3, "DC has their work cut out for them" isn't far behind.
But enough Marvel love for one opening paragraph. In this week's Top 5 we've got Iron Man 3 interviews with director Shane Black and more, a video blog review for Star Trek Into Darkness, the Pacific Rim trailer from WonderCon, Fox's courting of Michael B. Jordan the the role of Human Torch in its upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, and the new trailer for Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx's White House Down. A brief recap and link to each is a "Continue Reading" click away.
1. IRON MAN 3 Interviews with Shane Black and More

I briefly share my thoughts on the pic in the opening paragraph and while there's definitely more to talk about (including one of the biggest surprise turns I can remember in ...

If you thought the most recent banner and theatrical poster for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim were epic-looking, hold on to your hats, folks. Warner Bros. has unveiled a “super banner” for the film, and it gives a bird’s eye view of the massive level of size and destruction of the film’s Kaiju and Jaegers. For those unfamiliar, the film’s story is kicked off by the emergence of monsters (known as Kaiju) who start a war that devastates humanity. To fight back, the humans build giant robots (known as Jaegers) that are controlled by two pilots. This “super banner” will supposedly go up in theaters across the country, and I can’t wait to get a look at it up close.

Hit the jump to take a look at the super banner in full. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Idris Elba, and Ron Perlman. Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

Pacific Rim owes a great debt to Japan. Director Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film draws from the country's monster movies and manga, and in a new Japanese trailer, del Toro acknowledges these influences. Pacific Rim doesn't look like a homage as much as it appears to simply be the loving offspring of some of Japan's most beloved entertainment. There's also some new footage lurking about in the trailer, so that's worth checking out as well.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Idris Elba, and Ron Perlman. Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim had a presentation at this year's WonderCon, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. They showed off plenty of new footage in a new trailer for the upcoming giant-monsters-vs-giant-robots flick, and now that trailer has landed online. As Charlie Day's character says, it's "2,500 tons of awesome." The new trailer provides a lot more info on the story, but it's the visuals that will really blow people away. I felt bad watching it on my computer monitor because this is a movie that clearly demands to be seen in theaters.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Clifton Collins Jr., Idris Elba, and Ron Perlman. Pacific Rim opens in 3D on July 12th.

The first bit of casting news for Guillermo del Toro's FX series project, The Strain, is finally here! It looks like Corey Stoll (House of Cards) will lead the vampire adaptation. The Strain centers on a team of scientists who wage war against an ancient strain of virus that confers vampirism, along with those it infects. Del Toro and Chuck Hogan - who both wrote the original trilogy of novels - have co-written the screenplay which del Toro will direct. Hit the jump for more.

A press release reports that Stoll will play the lead role of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, who is New York's head of the Center for Disease Control's "Canary Team." The team investigates the appearance of a mysterious virus and band together with everyday New Yorkers in order to combat the growing threat against humanity. Here's what del Toro had to say about landing their lead:
“To me, having the right lead for The Strain series was perhaps the most important creative task. To be able to secure the perfect actor in Corey Stoll sets the project on the right track. To embody a character like Ephraim Goodweather – who transitions through every emotion and situation imaginable, and which anchors the narrative of the series – requires amazing talent and craft. Corey has both in spades as he has demonstrated it over and over again.”
Stoll can next be seen in Jaume Collet-Serra's actioner Non-Stop starring Liam Neeson and was recently cast in Shawn Levy's This Is Where I Leave You, starring Timothy Olyphant, ...

Guillermo del Toro has a Monster on the brain. This time around it's not a gigantic Kaiju for his upcoming Pacific Rim, but rather an adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's manga, Monster. The vision may be big but this project is meant for the small screen as part of del Toro's TV collaboration with HBO. The 18-volume thriller follows a doctor on his global search for a former patient of his who went on to become the most evil sociopath the world has ever seen. Del Toro will co-write the story with Steven Thompson (Dr. Who, Sherlock), while Thompson will write the pilot that del Toro intends to direct (got that?). Hit the jump for more.

Deadline reports that del Toro and HBO are in the Monster business. The project was originally set up at New Line as a feature but proved too unwieldy. Del Toro reportedly wooed Urasawa over a lengthy period of time until he was able to get him to trust that his creation would be in good hands. This appears to be a similar process to how Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were able to bring George R.R. Martin's creation to the masses.

As a side-note, the write-up also mentions that del Toro is once again stirring the coals with Universal in hopes of firing up his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. This news comes on the tail of the studio's successful global launch of Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, who was also ...

The voice cast for DreamWorks Animation’s sequel Kung Fu Panda 3 is starting to fill out quite nicely. Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, and other unspecified actors are reprising their roles from the first two animated films, but Heat Vision reports that Bryan Cranston, Mads Mikkelsen, and Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect) have also been set as new additions to the film. Kung Fu Panda 2 director Jennifer Yuh Nelson returns to helm the follow-up, which also sees the return of executive producer Guillermo del Toro, producer Melissa Cobb, co-producer Jeffrey Hermann, and writers/co-producers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.

Story details are firmly under wraps, but the ending of Kung Fu Panda 2 provides a strong hint that the third film will involve Black’s Po meeting his real father. Del Toro previously told us that Kung Fu Panda 3 has “the most formidable villain in the series,” and either Cranston or Mikkelsen would certainly fit that bill. Additionally, Kung Fu Panda 3 will now open on December 23, 2015 instead of March 2016.

After starring in the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film Mama earlier this year, Jessica Chastain will reunite with the director for his new haunting picture, Crimson Peak. The project has been steadily adding stellar talent to the cast, including Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and most recently Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock). The twice Oscar-nominated Chastain adds further star power and gravitas to a picture that del Toro calls a “very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.” Del Toro spoke more about the picture and more in a recent interview with Steve at WonderCon. Hit the jump for more on Crimson Peak and Chastain's casting announcement.

Heat Vision reported Chastain's casting in del Toro's Crimson Peak, but few character details are available at the moment. The story centers on a woman who begins to suspect that her husband might not be who he pretends to be. The Gothic horror movie is expected to begin production in February of 2014. Del Toro penned the script along with Matthew Robbins (Mimic) with a recent rewrite by Lucinda Coxon (Wild Target).

Chastain earned her second Oscar nod for Zero Dark Thirty, but last appeared in a surprise turn in Mama. She'll next be seen in writer/director Ned Benson's two-parter The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers. Chastain is also rumored ...

At last weekend's WonderCon, I was able to land an exclusive video interview with Guillermo Del Toro. As you may have noticed, all week we've posted parts of the interview (Pacific Rim 2 news, Justice League Dark news, his thoughts on a Pacific Rim vs. Godzilla movie) but it's now time to offer the entire conversation.

During our extended conversation, we talked about the fans' positive reaction to the Pacific Rim footage, what the test screenings have been like, how he directs every single detail you see on the screen, his preference for visual sense of depth over 3D gimmicks, the Pac Rim comic book with cover art by Alex Ross, the status of his FX series The Strain, all of his upcoming projects, and so much more. If you're a del Toro fan, I promise you will love this interview. Hit the jump to watch.

The cast for director Guillermo del Toro’s next film, the haunted house thriller Crimson Peak, just keeps getting better. Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) are already set to lead the pic, and now none other than Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to join the cast. Plot details are being kept firmly under wraps, but the immensely talented del Toro previously described the project as “very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.” Hit the jump for more.

News of Cumberbatch’s involvement with Crimson Peak comes courtesy of Variety. Production on the thriller will get underway in February, after del Toro has released this summer’s highly anticipated tentpole Pacific Rim and shot his pilot for the FX series The Strain. Del Toro recently told Steve that the plan is to shoot the entire first season for The Strain this fall, winter, and spring, but del Toro is only helming the first episode of the series.

Cumberbatch is currently filming the third season of BBC’s Sherlock and will next be seen as the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness next month. The versatile actor recently wrapped The Fifth Estate, in which he plays Julian Assange, and also appears later this year in the drama August Osage County and as the titular dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. If ...

Artist Alex Ross has the rare gift to take superheroes—the gods of the modern day—and make them appear godlike. His artwork is absolute stunning and sells in the thousands of dollars. If you walk around the exhibitors' floor at Comic-Con, his booth is as noticeable as the booths for Marvel and DC Comics. At the WonderCon panel for Pacific Rim, writer-director Guillermo del Toro announced that Ross would be doing the cover art for the film's prequel comic.

Speaking with Steve at WonderCon, del Toro talked about his involvement in the creation of the Pacific Rim prequel comic, and how he geeked out when he spoke with Ross to the point of being unable to give the beloved artist a note about the cover. Hit the jump for the more, and click on the respective links for what del Toro had to say about Justice League Dark and his other upcoming projects like Pacific Rim 2.

While some prequel comics are cheap tie-ins that do nothing more than call attention to the upcoming feature film, the Pacific Rim prequel comic will come straight from the bible del Toro created with co-writer Travis Beacham. Del Toro explained the level of his involvement when creating the comic:
"[Co-writer Travis Beacham] and I created a bible when we were writing the screenplay for everyone to have, to have a coherence. So Travis then wrote the script for the comic. What I basically was, executive editor, guest editor, whatever you want to call it. Every single step ...

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have gotten into the giant freaking monster business. This summer, they'll be releasing Guillermo del Toro's giant-monsters-vs-giant-robots blockbuster Pacific Rim, and in 2014 they'll have Gareth Edwards' remake of Godzilla. Since Godzilla's purpose in life is to fight things (unless it's the first one, Godzilla's name should always be followed by "vs."), why not a Godzilla vs. the giant robot Jaegers from Pacific Rim?

Hit the jump for del Toro speculating on a Godzilla vs. Jaeger battle, and how his Heavy Metal-influenced design on Pacific Rim probably wouldn't match up with the reportedly more realistic approach Edwards is taking on Godzilla. Also, click on the respective links for what del Toro had to say about Justice League Dark, and his other future projects like Pacific Rim 2.

Del Toro made sure to be clear that there's nothing in the works regarding a crossover between Pacific Rim and Godzilla, but he loves the idea. However, he also talked about how the different artistic styles might not mesh if the two worlds ever collided:
So far with the sequel, what we're writing, what we're creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the fuck out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain. But I don't think there are plans on that. I don't even know what direction they're taking Godzilla in. I know somewhat that it's grounded differently. Pacific ...

Even though Pacific Rim will be Guillermo del Toro's first film in five years, he has attached himself to numerous projects both for movies and television. Just to name a few that are still in development hell, he's attached to The Haunted Mansion, The Incredible Hulk TV series, and Pinocchio. And even though Pacific Rim has yet to hit theaters, del Toro and co-writer Travis Beacham are already set to write the sequel for Legendary Pictures. Del Toro is also in pre-production on adapting his vampire novel trilogy The Strain for television, and is looking ahead to the haunted house feature, Crimson Peak starring Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam.

Speaking with Steve and WonderCon, del Toro talked about the status of Pacific Rim 2, The Strain, Crimson Peak, how financing tends to determine his next project, writing the script to his indie feature Saturn and the End of Days, what happened to his animated adaptation of Pinocchio, and more. Also, be sure to check out what del Toro had to say about Justice League Dark.

Pacific Rim won't hit theaters until July, but the hype reached fever pitch when an exclusive trailer played at WonderCon this past weekend. Furthermore, Legendary's clearly happy with what they've seen thus far since they've commissioned a script for a sequel. Here's what del Toro had to say about the status of Pacific Rim 2:
We pitched a pretty good outline to Legendary several weeks ago, and they loved it, so Travis and I, as soon as we land ...

The strangeness of Warner Bros. trying to put together their superhero proprieties is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that Justice League Dark might hit the big screen before Justice League. Granted, it might not be called "Justice League Dark" when it's finally released (It's also been referred to as "Heaven Sent" and "Dark Universe"), but it will be a band of DC Comics anti-heroes rather than the mainstream superheroes. Guillermo del Toro is overseeing the development of the project as a possible directing vehicle, and recently spoke with Steve about it at WonderCon.

Hit the jump for what del Toro had to say about Justice League Dark, his reveal of another character on the team, his personal attachment to the material, the status of screenplay, and more.

We already knew that John Constantine (aka Hellblazer) would be leading the team of anti-heroes and that monsters Swamp Thing and Etrigan the Demon would be along for the ride as well as the attractive magician Zatanna. During out interview, del Toro revealed another character who has made the cut:
