With Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows opening May 11, Warner Bros. has provided us with 9 clips and 12 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the film.  The film stars Johnny Depp as a vampire who awakens in 1972 after having been buried for 200 years and tries to reconnect with his descendants.  Dark Shadows also stars Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, Gulliver McGrath, Helena Bonham Carter, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, and Jonny Lee Miller.

While the reaction to the last trailer was mixed, I’m excited by everything I’ve seen and think Depp and Burton look like they had a blast bringing their passion project to life.  In addition, I’ve spoken to a few people that  have seen the movie and all of them have said positive things.  Hit the jump to check out the footage and look for new interviews with the cast soon.

The first trailer for Tim Burton’s feature film version of the cult TV series Dark Shadows has finally arrived. After seeing a bevy of images over the past few months (including some hi-res ones today), we finally get a look at this thing in motion. The plot centers on a vampire (Johnny Depp) who awakens after having been buried for 200 years and tries to reconnect with his descendants. The beginning of the trailer is played straight, and we’re lead to believe that we’re in for another nightmarish tale from Burton, but when Depp wakes up in 1972 things kick into gear. This is very much a comedy, and there are more than a few laughs on display in the trailer. Burton and Depp have a lot of fun with the 1970s setting, and Depp’s reaction to modern technology is amusing. It’s got a goofy tone in the vein of Beetlejuice or Mars Attacks!, and I’m eager to see if the whole film plays like a return to comedic form for Burton.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, Gulliver McGrath, Helena Bonham Carter, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, and Jonny Lee Miller. Dark Shadows opens May 11th. [Update: We've updated the article with a high quality trailer and the film's poster.]

First Official Image from Tim Burton’s DARK SHADOWS Starring Johnny Depp

After the leak of disconcerting photos of Johnny Depp in make-up on the set of Tim Burton’s adaptation of the 1960s cult TV series Dark Shadows, Warner Bros. has released a somewhat-reassuring image of the cast.  The look is unmistakably Burton with an emphasis on distinctive costumes (I would say they look retro but the movie is in the 1970s) and daunting architecture.  Oh, and there’s Helena Bonham Carter’s ridiculous bright orange hair and white pancake make-up because Burton clearly can’t help himself.  As for Depp, you’ll notice the whiteface and big blue sunglasses are gone, but this a promo shot and the set photos are from another scene in the movie where his character, vampire Barnabas Collins, has to go out into broad daylight.

Hit the jump to check out the full image along with the official synopsis and descriptions for some of the character.  The film also stars Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, and Michelle Pfeiffer.  Dark Shadows opens May 11, 2012.

Warner Bros. has announced that principal photography has begun on Tim Burton’s adaptation of the cult classic TV series  Dark Shadows.  While I’ve always found announcements about the start of production to be slightly baffling (Movie studio is making movies!  Will wonders never cease?!), they sometimes contain useful information.  In the case of this Dark Shadows announcement, there are two newsworthy items.  First up, Jonny Lee Miller (Dexter) has joined the cast which features Johnny Depp (of course), Helena Bonham Carter (again, of course), Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, and Jackie Earle Haley.

Secondly, Warner Bros. has also released the full synopsis which not only provides plot details (but nothing spoilery) but also details the relationship between all of the characters.  Hit the jump to check out the press release, which includes the synopsis.  Dark Shadows is set to open May 11, 2012.

Alongside the news that child actor Gulliver McGrath (The Loved Ones) will play the role of David Collins in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows also comes word that Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) is the leading candidate to play his father, Roger Collins. Deadline is reporting the tentative rumor that Sheen is Burton’s top choice for the role although nothing is confirmed as of yet. For now, McGrath joins a cast that already includes Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Early Haley, and Bella Heathcoate. As you may already expect, Helena Bonham Carter is believed to be officially joining the cast at some point as well.

Previously, Sheen provided voice work as White Rabbit in Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. He is also experienced in working with supernatural-based material given his respective turns in the Underworld and Twilight franchises. As for McGrath, the young actor was previously a finalist to play the namesake in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret. His role of David Collins was held by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the 90s reboot of the television series.
