The family adventure comedy Gulliver’s Travels, starring funnyman Jack Black, is out on DVD/Blu-ray this week with 90 minutes worth of extras and special features, including eight deleted scenes, a gag reel and various behind the scenes featurettes. For those unfamiliar with the story, this version of the classic tale brings Jack Black’s irreverent humor to the role of Gulliver, an underachieving mailroom clerk who takes a writing assignment traveling to Bermuda, only to get shipped on the fantastical island of Lilliput, which made up of tiny little people who aren’t sure what to make of the bigger-than-life figure. After the little fish in a big pond suddenly becomes the biggest fish around, he realizes that size doesn’t matter and it’s how big you are on the inside that counts.
During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, director Rob Letterman talked about making the shift from animation to live-action, what he loved about the story of Gulliver when he was first introduced as a kid, what viewers can look forward to in the DVD/Blu-ray special features, working with such a terrific cast of actors, and that he hopes families will get the experience of enjoying this film together. He also talked about how he is currently in development on the action film Stretch Armstrong for Universal and Hasbro, with Taylor Lautner in the title role. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

January suffered another down weekend, with estimated grosses for the top ten films down almost 56% over this weekend in 2010. Paramount had reason to celebrate, as True Grit outdrew Little Fockers in the weekend race for the first time. Season of the Witch, 2011’s first new title, struggled while Sony/SG’s Country Strong did modest business in its first expanded nationwide run.

Though it’s a brand new year, we’ll be left cleaning up after 2010 for weeks to come. After falling to second place on New Year’s Eve, Little Fockers managed to edge past True Grit to retain the box office crown for a second weekend in a row. All hail the king. Overall, 2010 will end up only slightly behind 2009’s record with over $10 billion in profits – due largely to early successes like Avatar and Alice and Wonderland, of course. Nothing in the ass-end of the past year is even coming close to those titles in terms of dollars or attendance.

Christmas Day didn’t add much cheer to this year’s box office: holiday receipts were down approximately 44% over 2009. Little Fockers stayed on top for the three-day weekend, earning an estimated $34 million from 3,536 locations and a five-day cume of $48.3 million. Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels opened Saturday, meaning it had one less day to work with when it came to tallying up weekend earnings. The Jack Black adventure inspired only $3.5 million in its debut, giving it a two-day estimate of $7.2 million.

20th Century Fox has released 7 movie clips and a number of new images from director Rob Letterman’s (Monsters vs Aliens) Gulliver’s Travels. Starring Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet, and Billy Connolly, the 3D live-action family comedy is based on the 18th century novel by Jonathan Swift.
While it’s clearly aimed at families, Gulliver’s Travels was co-written by Nicholas Stoller (Get Him to the Greek, The Muppets), so I’m hoping it has at least a few jokes aimed at the grownups. With a release date of December 25, we’ll know in two weeks. Hit the jump for the clips and the new images:

If for some reason you want to see Gulliver’s Travels, then you’re going to love this new trailer, which will give you the entire movie in a little under three minutes. The movie: Jack Black ends up in a fictional land where he’s huge and every one else is little. Every joke is apparently based on the size difference and Jack Black at his Jack Black-iest. Gulliver’s Travels looks like it could be one of the worst movies of the year and looking back at the year in film so far, that’s saying something.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer/condensed movie. The film also stars Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, and Amanda Peet. Gulliver’s Travels opens in 3D on December 22nd.

New posters have arrived for the Coen Brothers’ True Grit and Rob Letterman’s Gulliver’s Travels. The True Grit poster would be impressive except for the silly, cheap looking “bloodstain” on it. Why would a poster bleed? If it weren’t for that, it would be one of the best posters of the year. Instead, it’s one of the cheesiest. If you want to be sold on the film, check out the amazing trailer.
The Gulliver’s Travels poster is more of the same: Jack Black being tied down by Lilliputians. If you didn’t know anything about that movie (and there’s only been one awful trailer), these posters would lead you to believe that it’s about a fat man who has a very specific bondage fetish. Hit the jump to check out both posters. True Grit stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin, and opens December 25th. Gulliver’s Travels also stars Jaosn Segel, Emily Blunt, and Amanda Peet, and opens in 3D on December 22nd.

With yesterday’s poster unveiling and today’s trailer debut, Fox is officially riding the crest of promotional wave number one for this December’s Gulliver’s Travels. Loosely based on the Jonathan Swift satire, the film sends travel writer Lemuel Gulliver to the island of Liliput, where he towers over the tiny citizens. Jack Black stars as the titular relative giant with a supporting cast of Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet, and Chris O’Dowd. Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens) directs from a script by Joe Stillman (Shrek 2) and Nicholas Stoller (Get Him to the Greek).
The trailer did provoke me to look up Black’s age: turns out he’s 40. Hmm. To be fair, the elements I’m most looking forward to (Emily Blunt, Jason Segel) didn’t get much screentime, so I definitely want to see a second trailer before passing too much judgement. Pass your own judgement on the clip after the jump.

We saw a bit of the marketing for the forthcoming adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels with a pic snapped of a billboard at Cannes, but Fox has provided a less blurry glimpse with this newly released high resolution poster. Based on the Jonathan Swift satire, Gulliver’s Travels will send travel writer Lemuel Gulliver to the island of Liliput, where he towers over the tiny citizens. Gulliver’s Travels is slated to hit theaters in 3D on December 22, 2010. Check out the poster after the jump.

With Get Him to the Greek getting ready to come out in a few weeks, I got to talk to writer-director Nicholas Stoller on the phone yesterday. While I’ll have the entire interview online soon, I was able to get updates on all the various projects he’s working on like the upcoming Muppet Movie (tentatively titled The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made), Gulliver’s Travels, Stretch Armstrong, Five-Year Engagement and Einstein Theory. Here’s some of the highlights:
The Muppet Movie
- They had a table read a few days ago and they start filming this September
- They wrote in a ton of cameos and he said it breaks the fourth wall every five minutes
- Compared the tone to the original Muppet movies
- Filming in Los Angeles. Thinks it’s a 6 or 8 week shoot
- To accommodate Jason Segal and his work on How I Met Your Mother, he’ll shoot HIMYM 3 or 4 days a week and the other days will be on the Muppet movie. They will film on weekends.
- Calls The Muppets a “comedy gateway-drug”
Stretch Armstrong
- Confirmed he’s writing it for director Rob Letterman
- Says it has a light tone like Iron Man
- They’re creating their own universe for the character and other Hasbro characters aren’t making any appearances
- Confirms it’s an origin story
Gulliver’s Travels
- He saw a rough cut without effects and said it’s awesome
- Said it’s “a great mix of comedy and action-adventure-fantasy that I think people are going to be really into.”
Five-Year Engagement
- Is thinking about directing this next

Empire is snapping and tweeting photos of promo posters they’re seeing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. They’ve already uploaded posters for Gulliver’s Travels (starring Jack Black, Jason Segel, and Emily Blunt), Kane & Lynch (starring Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx), and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Hopefully, Empire will be grabbing more images throughout the festival.
Check out all three images after the jump. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader hits theaters on December 10th, Gulliver’s Travels hits on December 22nd, and Kane & Lynch hits sometime in 2011.

Sony Pictures has informed us that Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet has been pushed back from December 22nd to January 14, 2011 so the film can have more time to work on the 3D. Steve spoke to producer Neal Moritz earlier this month and Moritz revealed that they were doing tests to see if Green Hornet was worth a 3D conversion. We now know that for Moritz, Hornet passed the test. It’s good to know that they’re planning this 3D conversion well in advance of the film’s release, unlike the rushed, ugly conversion Warner Bros. did on Clash of the Titans.
The new release date also moves the film, which stars Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, and Christoph Waltz, away from the heavy holiday season. The competition for 3D screens will be fierce with Tron Legacy, Yogi Bear, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 all vying for 3D theaters. Additionally, Fox may (and I predict they will) give conversions to their holiday-season flicks, Gulliver’s Travels and The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Not much point in turning your film 3D when there aren’t enough 3D screens to make it worth the trouble. I’m going to assume that more theaters will be going 3D capable to accommodate the oncoming onslaught.

Screenwriter Nick Stoller (Yes Man) and director Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens) will re-team for Stretch Armstrong starring Taylor Lautner. According to Variety, plot details are being kept under wraps, which is surprising because I didn’t think the movie would have a plot beyond: Guy stretches limbs, kids wonder what makes him do that, open him up to discover it’s corn syrup, and never play with him again.
Stoller and Letterman previously worked together for the upcoming adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels starring Jack Black, Jason Segel, and Emily Blunt. Steve Oedekerk (Evan Almighty) wrote the original screenplay for the film, so the Stoller/Letterman hiring is definitely a step up for the feature adaptation of the Hasbro toy.
