New Trailer for Sci-Fi Thriller LOCKOUT Starring Guy Pearce

The domestic trailer has debuted for the sci-fi prison break film Lockout. The first half of the trailer is pretty rote, with lines like “He’s the best there is, but he’s a loose cannon.” It picks up when Guy Pearce appears, but altogether the tone here is wildly different from the international trailers we’ve seen previously. The action looks great, but Pearce’s charisma is almost entirely absent here. It’s a shame, because the movie actually looks really, really good in the other trailers. It’s cool and strange, and Pearce is hilarious as a wisecracking badass. Hopefully we’ll get a differently cut trailer soon, but for now US audiences will have to settle for this generic actioner.

New Trailer and Poster for SEEKING JUSTICE Starring Nicolas Cage

The first US trailer and poster for the thriller Seeking Justice have been unveiled. The plot concerns a happily married man who enlists the help of a dangerous underground vigilante operation when his wife is brutally attacked. He soon finds out that he’s in over his head, as the vigilante syndicate has bigger plans in mind as part of his repayment for their services. The trailer is pretty much what you’d expect from an action-thriller starring Nicolas Cage. There’s nothing particularly new or interesting here, and January Jones is quickly becoming the go-to actress for the part of “traumatized wife.” Time will tell if Guy Pearce’s charisma is enough to carry the film, but based on this first look I’m not entirely sold that Seeking Justice is worth checking out (though Cage’s facial hair makes a strong case for the contrary).

New Featurette for LOCK-OUT Starring Guy Pearce

A new featurette for the sci-fi action flick Lock-Out (aka MS One) starring Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace.  The film centers on a wrongly-accused spy (Pearce) who must rescue the President’s daughter (Grace) from an orbiting prison.  We’ve already seen from the trailers that Pearce is going to play a wise-cracking badass and this new featurette is basically centered on that character.  I’m not sure how the rest of the movie will be, but if it works, Pearce is going to be a large reason why.

First Trailer for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Prometheus, a sci-fi project from director Ridley Scott with ties to the Alien series.  Here’s the logline: “The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”  This is very much a teaser, as it focuses much more on mood than showcasing whole scenes. We don’t even really get a good look at any of the stars, but that’s inconsequential because the trailer does a damn fine job of sending chills down your spine regardless. If there was any doubt about the film’s connection to Alien, that’ll be put to rest after watching this trailer (the title appearance is fantastic). This marks a return not only to the sci-fi genre for Scott, but to horror, and I couldn’t be happier.

We recently got a look at the first trailer for the sci-fi action thriller Lock-Out by way of an international teaser. It revealed very little in the way of plot, but Guy Pearce looked promising in the starring role. Now a new trailer has popped up, and it’s gets fairly deep into the story of the flick. Pearce plays a man who is tasked with going into a maximum security prison in space in order to rescue the US President’s daughter. Why does she need rescuing? Well it seems the space prison is in the midst of a little space prison break by the space prisoners. The visuals look really cool, and I’m really liking Pearce’s smart-ass character. The tag of the trailer refers to the film as MS One: Maximum Security so either that’s the international title, or the new overall title (I’m hoping it’s the former).

Guy Pearce Has a Very Special Set of Outer Space Skills in International Trailer for LOCK-OUT

An international trailer for James Mather and Stephen St. Leger‘s sci-fi action thriller Lock-Out has gone online and despite the outer-space setting, the movie looks like a solid little thriller.  Guy Pearce stars as wrongly-accused spy who must rescue the President’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from an orbiting prison.  The Taken comparisons since both films were produced by Luc Besson, and once again Grace must be rescued by a guy with the special training to get the job done.  The good news is that Pearce does a great job of selling the tough guy routine, and the action looks fun even though the cinematographer may have gone to the J.J. Abrams’ School of Needs More Lens Flares.

New Clips and Images from JUSTICE Starring Nicolas Cage and January Jones

New clips and images have gone online for Roger Donaldson the action-thriller Justice starring Nicolas Cage, Guy Pearce, and January Jones.  The movie centers on Will Gerard (Cage), a man whose wife is violently attacked, and Will inadvertently requests “justice” from a group of vigilantes, and then refuses when they ask him to do some street justice in return.  Originally titled “Hungry Rabbit Jumps“, the movie has sat on a shelf for some time now, but has landed distribution in the UK and Ireland.  Judging by the clips, the movie is generic but not horrible (although I think it’s high time we stop putting magnetic letters on our refrigerators because they’re only used to leave threatening messages).  The clips also serve as a reminder that we’ve perhaps leveled an unfair expectation of Nicolas Cage.  While we know that he can go nutso in a movie, he shouldn’t always have to.

THE WETTEST COUNTY, Starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy, Set for April 20, 2012

The Weinstein Company has set John Hillcoat‘s The Wettest County for April 20, 2012.  Nick Cave (The Proposition) wrote the script based Matt Bondourant‘s novel about two brothers (played by Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy) who become bootleggers in the South during Prohibition.  In addition to LaBeouf and Hardy, the outstanding cast also includes Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Dane DeHaan, and Jessica Chastain.  It looked like TWC would be setting the movie up for an awards run, but the studio already has its line-up set with The Artist, The Iron Lady, and My Week with Marilyn.  That doesn’t mean that Wettest County is bad, but it may not be appealing to Academy voters.  Neither were Hillcoat’s previous films, The Proposition and The Road.

Jason Clarke to Lead Kathryn Bigelow’s KILL BIN LADEN; Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Rooney Mara, and More Considered for Supporting Roles

As late as this past September, it looked like Joel Edgerton would star in Kathryn Bigelow‘s hunt for Osama Bin Laden film (tentatively titled Kill Bin Laden).  However, Deadline is now reporting Edgerton’s The Great Gatsby co-star Jason Clarke (The Chicago Code) is “the first actor set” for the movie, and makes no mention of his fellow Australian actor.  I’m not exactly sure what happened to Edgerton, but maybe the start date for Bin Laden getting pushed back caused a scheduling conflict (Edgerton began talks to star in the 300 sequel last week).  But I have no problem with Clarke, who will reportedly play “a terrorist hunter in service of the U.S. efforts to hunt Bin Laden.”

Deadline also reports that Bigelow is also looking at Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), Jennifer Ehle (Contagion), Guy Pearce (who starred in Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker), Idris Elba (Thor), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and Nina Arianda (Midnight In Paris) as possible co-stars.  That’s a whole lot of talent, and it’s not surprising that Bigelow can put together a high-caliber cast after the success of The Hurt Locker.  Production on Kill Bin Laden (written by Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal) is set to begin early next year.

Guy Pearce, Ben Foster, and Kelly MacDonald to Star in Steve Buscemi’s Adaptation of QUEER

Steve Buscemi has lined up quite the cast for his next directorial effort. The Boardwalk Empire actor is poised to direct an adaptation of William Burroughs’ novel Queer, and Vulture reports that Guy Pearce, Ben Foster, and Buscemi’s Boardwalk Empire co-star Kelly MacDonald are set to star. The book was written in 1952, after Burroughs accidentally shot and killed his wife. The story, which mirrors Burroughs’ emotional and psychological state at the time, centers on an American named William Lee living in Mexico City, weighed down by drugs, guilt, and lust. The project is still in the early stages, and financing isn’t yet firmed up, but Rampart director Oren Moverman wrote the script and told Vulture that the plan is to shoot the film during Buscemi’s next hiatus from HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Trailer and Images for Long-Delayed JUSTICE Starring Nicolas Cage and January Jones

You may recall that back in August 2010, we showed you the first image from a crime thriller named Hungry Rabbit Jumps starring Nicolas Cage and January Jones.  If you don’t recall this, don’t worry: it is not important in any way.  But if you had this project on your radar and were dismayed at its appearance, fear not.  The film has resurfaced with a new, far more generic and forgettable title: Justice.  The film also has plenty of new images and a trailer that does a good job of explaining why the movie sat on a shelf for over a year.  The premise is what if Don Corleone, instead of being wealthy and powerful and having people come to him for favors, trolled the waiting rooms of hospitals offering vigilante service but “Someday, and that day may never come, I’ll call upon you to do a service for me…”  Cage inadvertently requests “justice” from a group of vigilantes and then is surprised when they ask him to do some street justice in return.

The movie doesn’t look god-awful as much as it looks painfully forgettable, which I’m sure everyone involved is hoping for.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the image.  Justice opens in the UK on November 16th.

2011 Primetime Emmy Award Winners Announced; Winners include Peter Dinklage, Kyle Chandler, and Martin Scorsese

Tonight was the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and the winner’s list included some great names.  Perhaps the best win of the night was Peter Dinklage picking up Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Game of Thrones.  Not far behind was Kyle Chandler finally picking up an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series for the final season of Friday Night Lights (the show also picked up an Emmy for Best Writing in a Drama Series).  Martin Scorsese picked up an award for his direction of Boardwalk Empire‘s pilot episode, and ubiquitous character actor Margo Martindale won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Mags Bennett on FX’s Justified.

The top awards for Best Drama, Best Comedy, and Best Variety, Music or Comedy Series went to last year’s winners Mad Men, Modern Family, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, respectively.  Best Miniseries or TV Movie was awarded to  PBS’ Downtown Abbey while CBS’ The Amazing Race picked up another Emmy for Best Reality-Competition Program.  Hit the jump for the full list of winners.

Watch Full DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK/DRIVE Panel From Comic-Con Featuring Guillermo del Toro and Nicholas Winding Refn

One of the best panels from this year’s Comic-Con was undoubtedly FilmDistrict’s mashup of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Drive. Instead of separating the studio’s two films, the filmmakers and stars from both flicks participated in the panel together, resulting in an utterly fascinating and wildly entertaining conversation between Dark co-writer/producer Guillermo del Toro and Drive writer/director Nicholas Winding Refn. The conversation, which also includes Troy Nixey, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman and Guy Pearce, offers incredible insight into the way both directors think, with some fantastic stories and NSFW language sprinkled in for good measure. Refn recounts, with hilarious detail, a ridiculously awkward prescription drug-fueled car ride with star Ryan Gosling that cultivated the idea for Drive.

Red Band Trailer for DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK

FilmDistrict has released a new red band trailer for the horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark just before it hits theaters this weekend.  There’s no gore or nudity, so I can’t point to the specifics that make it red band.  (Maybe acute creepiness?)  You get a really good look at the creatures, which are always a treat when Guillermo del Toro’s involved.  He’s producing here, and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins (Mimic); Troy Nixey directed.

The story centers on an architect (Guy Pearce), his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes), and his daughter (Bailee Madison) during the restoration of Blackwood Manor, a Gothic mansion infested by “an army of beady-eyed, sharp-clawed monsters emerge, small in size but endless in number: the homunculi.”  Watch the trailer after the jump.
