We recently reported that Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) would be joining Tom Hiddleston as a baddie in Thor 2, so Iron Man 3 went ahead and added their own firepower. In this case, “Firepower” is actually the villain that Ashley Hamilton (Sunset Beach) is in talks to play. In the Marvel universe, Hamilton’s character was the pilot of a “power suit” prototype built by the government (likely, S.H.I.E.L.D.) under the codename “Project: Firepower.” And we all know that, once you’ve strapped on a suit of battle armor, it doesn’t take too long before you challenge Tony Stark/Iron Man himself (Robert Downey Jr.). Also returning, in a producer capacity, will be Jon Favreau. But it looks like fans will be able to see the Iron Man director on screen as well. Hit the jump for more.

On the seventh day, Joss Whedon created The Avengers. Marvel has released a new infographic movie timeline that highlights specific super-heroic instances in time and places them in the context of The Avengers and the individual movies that built up to it. While The Avengers franchise no doubt revolves around Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, the new infographic has made him into a pseudo-Christ figure by demarcating the timeline with BIM (“Before Iron Man”) and AIM (“After Iron Man”). While it’s true that Iron Man had more movies than the rest of The Avengers (excluding 2003′s Hulk, which the timeline wisely forgets), I’d much rather see the scenes relative to one Special Agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) or even the beloved Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). Hit the jump to check it out.

Though we’ve most recently only seen her in brief roles in both Contagion and The Avengers, Gwyneth Paltrow is lining up a major role in the drama Guernica 33 Days. The story centers on Pablo Picasso’s emotional turmoil as he painted his masterpiece, with Antonio Banderas onboard to play the legendary artist. Variety reports that Paltrow is in talks to play Picasso’s lover Dora Maar, a Spanish-speaking French photographer who snapped the stages of “Guernica’s” creation. Paltrow speaks Spanish, having lived as an exchange student in Spain during her teenage years, and she recently flaunted her Español skills as a substitute Spanish teacher on Glee (for which she actually won an Emmy for some reason).
Paltrow’s a strong actress when given the right material, so hopefully she can shine in Guernica. Carlos Saura (The Hunt) is set to direct, and production will begin in mid-September. The Spain-financed pic also stars Imanol Arlas and Barbara Goenaga. Paltrow is next set to shoot Iron Man 3.

The first images from the sex addict dramedy Thanks for Sharing have gone online. The film marks the directorial debut of The Kids Are All Right co-writer Stuart Blumberg and features an all-star cast in this story of three sex addicts struggling to function in normal society. Mark Ruffalo plays an addict who’s trying to strike up a relationship with a woman who has sworn off dating other addicts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Tim Robbins plays a man married to his high school sweetheart who actually becomes addicted to his 12-step recovery program, and Book of Mormon star Josh Gad plays a young man whose addiction is so bad that he hides a camera in his shoe in order to film up women’s skirts.
The film certainly looks much lighter than that other sex addict movie from last year, Shame, and I’m a big fan of the ensemble cast. Hopefully we see a trailer soon. The film also stars Joely Richardson, Patrick Fugit, and Alecia Moore aka Pink. [Update: Apparently these images were not approved for release and we've been asked to take them down. We'll have official stills from the film up once they're available.]

Disney and Marvel have tapped Rebecca Hall (The Prestige) for the female lead of Iron Man 3. The powers that be have moved quickly to initiate talks with Hall, as the previous frontrunner for the role, Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life), turned them down only yesterday, citing scheduling issues. All the better for Hall, who can prepare for her role as a “sexy scientist” who rivals Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in intelligence. The third installment will feature the return of Downey Jr. after his scene-stealing turn in The Avengers, along with Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Guy Pearce will join the fun and Sir Ben Kingsley is on board to play the villain. Production on the Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3 starts this month in North Carolina before heading off to China en route to a May 3rd, 2013 release date. Hit the jump for more on Hall’s role and the overall plot of Iron Man 3.

When a big geek project goes into development, fans are eager for any scrap of information they can find. Inevitably, rumors begin to pop up in the film’s early days, and we report them on the off-chance that they could be true. Some information may have been true at the time, but then the script changed. Perhaps wishful geeking was misinterpreted as real information. And then there’s always good, old-fashioned subterfuge on behalf of the production.
The Avengers was a blockbuster over four years in the planning, and plenty of rumors had time to surface over the course of its production. The film has finally been released (to a record-breaking $200 million opening weekend), and now we know which rumors turned to be true, false, or somewhere in between. Hit the jump for the rumor recap.

Remember way back when we told you The Avengers cast and crew were shooting an additional scene? Well, it looks like that additional scene will be tacked on to the credit sequence. It’s being reported as a second credits sequence, meaning there was already one in place for the initial screenings and another one has been filmed for the very end of the credits. In other words, don’t leave your theater until the screen goes dark and the ushers threaten to call the police. We’ll keep this post spoiler-free (for you and for me), but we’ve got links to where you can find more information if you simply cannot wait until Thursday at midnight.
The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cobie Smulders and Clark Gregg opens May 4th. Hit the jump for details and a bonus new TV spot.

By now, the tech savvy among you can surely have clipped and edited the entire feature length of The Avengers together from all of the footage we’ve brought you so far. Well, just in case you have a few gaps left in your film, we have two new TV spots for you tonight. “Together” has a nice montage of our heroes getting ready to kick ass while “Balance” brings us some nice scenes of destruction with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) telling us what it means to be an Avenger. The Avengers opens May 4th in IMAX 3D. Hit the jump to check out the new TV spots.

There’s only one week left until The Avengers opens in theaters, but in case you haven’t heard about it, listen up. Marvel has managed to unite its greatest cinematic superheros (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Black Widow and, of course, Agent Coulson) onto one screen to battle the villainous Loki. We’ve posted so much material for you to enjoy that it’s easier to just click on this link right here to check out anything and everything at your leisure (or hit the jump to see where I’ve laid it all out for you, nice and neat). The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Clark Gregg all united against poor old Tom Hiddleston (and his Leviathan). Hit the jump to check out the new images.

With only about four weeks left before Iron Man 3 begins shooting, some casting additions are still being made. Not only has the great Sir Ben Kingsley come on board in a villainous capacity, but the charismatic Guy Pearce is reportedly adding his talent to the Marvel movie. Now, the latest reports have Jessica Chastain back on track to join the threequel. Her role is purportedly that of a sexy scientist who rivals Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in intelligence. Chastain was previously thought to be in the mix for the role before scheduling issues complicated matters. With her film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers pushed back, it looks like Chastain will be joining Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and possibly Scarlett Johansson for Iron Man 3. Hit the jump for more.

The Avengers still hasn’t hit theaters, but there’s not a moment to lose when it comes to keeping the Marvel Superhero Machine running. Iron Man 3 is set for next summer, and it will feature some familiar faces. In addition to Robert Downey Jr, it’s not too surprising to learn that Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle will be reprising their roles as Pepper Potts and James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine, respectively. But Latino Review has uncovered [via Feature Film Casting] that Scarlett Johansson will be back as well. Her character, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, became Tony Stark’s personal assistant in Iron Man 2, but that was just a cover to spy on him for Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) rather than a real occupation.
Hit the jump for my hearty speculation on how she’ll factor into the latest Tony Stark adventure. Iron Man 3 is being directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang), who is co-writing with Drew Pearce (No Heroics). The film is set for May 3, 2013.

The Japanese trailer for The Avengers has gone online. It’s damn entertaining and it features footage that’s not in the latest American trailer. For the spoiler-phobes, I won’t say what or who is in the new footage, but I’ll say that the entire trailer looks great.
Hit the jump to check out the Japanese trailer. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, and Samuel L. Jackson. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

With the massive success of Glee, it was only a matter of time before creator Ryan Murphy brought a musical to the big screen. Deadline reports that Murphy has lined up Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Beyonce, and Andy Samberg to star in the musical comedy One Hit Wonders. Murphy will direct and co-write the script with his Glee co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. The story “centers on three singers (Paltrow, Witherspoon, and Diaz) who each scored a top hit song in the 1990s before watching their careers go down the drain, and then team up to form a super-group.” Samberg, in addition to co-starring, will reportedly write music for the film with his The Lonely Island partners Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.

You never know what you’re going to get with Steven Soderbergh. He’s a chameleon, someone just as happy to do a project that cost ten dollars as a hundred million. And he likes to work. Even though he’s mentioned retirement, Contagion came out in September theatrically, and four months later his Haywire is coming out. Contagion stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Ehle in what amounts to a disaster film about a new virus that starts a pandemic. It may also be the best disaster film ever made. Our review of Contagion on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

In Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, the Center for Disease Control’s Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) is asked by a deputy from the Department of Homeland Security (Enrico Colantoni) if the growing pandemic could be a terrorist attack. “There’s no need to weaponize the bird flu,” Cheever calmly responds. “The birds are doing that.” Similarly, Soderbergh knows there’s no need to sensationalize a pandemic. The pandemic is already terrifying on its own. By realistically depicting the response to the rampant spread of an unknown virus, Soderbergh makes us feel the intensity and the helplessness of the situation. But in attempting to capture as many sides of the story as possible, some characters become one-dimensional, plotlines fizzle out, and unintentional xenophobia overshadows the intended misophobia.
