You never know what you’re going to get with Steven Soderbergh. He’s a chameleon, someone just as happy to do a project that cost ten dollars as a hundred million. And he likes to work. Even though he’s mentioned retirement, Contagion came out in September theatrically, and four months later his Haywire is coming out. Contagion stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Ehle in what amounts to a disaster film about a new virus that starts a pandemic. It may also be the best disaster film ever made. Our review of Contagion on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

In Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, the Center for Disease Control’s Dr. Ellis Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) is asked by a deputy from the Department of Homeland Security (Enrico Colantoni) if the growing pandemic could be a terrorist attack. “There’s no need to weaponize the bird flu,” Cheever calmly responds. “The birds are doing that.” Similarly, Soderbergh knows there’s no need to sensationalize a pandemic. The pandemic is already terrifying on its own. By realistically depicting the response to the rampant spread of an unknown virus, Soderbergh makes us feel the intensity and the helplessness of the situation. But in attempting to capture as many sides of the story as possible, some characters become one-dimensional, plotlines fizzle out, and unintentional xenophobia overshadows the intended misophobia.

The cast for screenwriter Stuart Blumberg’s directorial debut Thanks for Sharing just got a lot more blonde. Gwyneth Paltrow and Joely Richardson have joined the cast of the dramedy which also stars Mark Ruffalo and Tim Robbins. The story revolves around a group of friends who are brought together in their quest to overcome sex addiction and forge meaningful relationships. Variety reports that Paltrow will play a successful businesswoman who falls for Ruffalo’s character, while Richardson will take on the role of Robbins’ wife.
Blumberg is coming off an Oscar nomination for co-writing The Kids are All Right, and is also the scribe responsible for the charming The Girl Next Door and Edward Norton’s underrated directorial effort Keeping the Faith. The cast is intriguing given the subject matter, and Blumberg has a knack for keeping weighty material from becoming too heavy-handed, so I’m interested to see how this one turns out.

Warner Bros. has unloaded a massive number of images from Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming star-studded thriller Contagion. The film centers on the global impact of a deadly virus outbreak, showcasing the ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Lawrence Fishbourne and Bryan Cranston. We debuted the chillingly great character posters a few weeks back, and these images give us our first look at Elliott Gould, John Hawkes and Demitri Martin in their supporting roles, as well as a number of shots of Soderbergh in action.

New posters have been released for Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus, Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, and Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The Coriolanus poster is one of the best I’ve seen all year and I would happily hang it on my wall (provided the film is good, and it certainly looks good). The Contagion poster is made up of the character posters we’ve already seen. Finally, there’s a new code-face poster for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. This one features Mark Strong as MI6 agent Jim Prideaux.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. Coriolanus opens December 2nd. Contagion opens September 9th. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy opens November 18th.

As part of their Fall/Holiday Preview, Warner Bros. has released the first official images from Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion and the rom-com anthology New Year’s Eve. They’ve also released new images from the family film Dolphin Tale. The images don’t hold any grand surprises. The Contagion images show that a virus is probably going down. The New Year’s Eve image shows Lea Michele and Jon Bon Jovi making sweet, sweet music together. The Dolphin Tale images show dolphins.
You can check out the images after the jump. Contagion opens September 9th. Dolphin Tale opens in 3D on September 23rd. New Year’s Eve opens December 9th. Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, and it’s slightly terrifying. The film centers on a deadly virus outbreak, and at the beginning of the trailer the whole thing seems kinda silly (see: 1995’s Outbreak), but then the enormity of it hits and…well, you’ll see. With this being one of Soderbergh’s last efforts before retirement, combined with the incredible cast he’s assembled, Contagion has the makings of a fantastic thriller. This one was already high on my “most-anticipated” list, but after this trailer it has definitely jumped up towards the top.

We should be getting a trailer soon for Steven Soderbergh’s epidemic thriller Contagion, but because studios still think that anyone watches Entertainment Tonight, the show still gets to premiere footage from the latest movies which the ET anchors then proceed to ruin with their chirpy voiceovers. However, since I’m jazzed for this film and this is the first look we’re getting at the flick, I’ll begrudgingly encourage you to hit the jump to check out some brief footage. I’m hearing that the film is both epic in scope and truly terrifying.

What are the Oscars without a little pageantry? As it’s been done in years prior, the Best Song nominees will be performed by the folks who sang them in the movie. Gwyneth Paltrow will perform “Coming Home” from Country Strong; Randy Newman will perform “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3; songwriter Alan Menken will provide piano accompaniment to Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi for “I See the Light” from Tangled; and songwriter A.R. Rahman will join Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine to perform “If I Rise” from 127 Hours.
Hit the jump for the press release and to hear the songs. The 83rd Academy Awards will be held on February 27th.

Right before the Christmas break I got to sit down with Tim McGraw to talk about his movie Country Strong. By now you’ve probably seen the clips or the trailer and know the film is about an emotionally unstable country star (Gwyneth Paltrow) that gets involved with a rising young singer-songwriter (Garrett Hedlund). McGraw plays Paltrow’s husband/manager and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) plays a beauty-queen-turned-singer who is trying to make a name for herself.
Anyway, during the interview McGraw talked about how he got involved in the project, does he know anyone like his character, did he ever think he’d be acting in big Hollywood movies, the rehearsal process, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch the interview. Country Strong is in theaters now.

Anyway, during the interview Paltrow talked about the challenges of making the film (she actually sings and she’s good), how she got attached to the project, what this year has been like for her, and will she record an album. But I think the best part of the interview was the very beginning. That’s because I got Simon Pegg to give me two questions to ask her (they’re close friends) and her reaction is great. I won’t spoil what I asked. Finally, towards the end of the interview, Paltrow talked about how Pepper Potts won’t be in Joss Whedon’s Avengers movie and reveals who she plays in on Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion. We already know Jim Carrey is hosting the first episode of Saturday Night Live in 2011 on January 8th, but now we have our host for the next weekend’s show. Today NBC announced that Gwyneth Paltrow will host SNL on January 15th with musical guest Cee Lo Green. This will be her third time hosting and rumors are swirling that because of her performance of “Forget You” – the censored version of Cee Lo’s chart-topping hit “Fuck You” – on Fox’s Glee, that she might end up performing a song with the artist himself. Or, maybe she’ll sing a song from the soundtrack of Country Strong. Who knows? NBC hasn’t confirmed or denied the rumors, so we’ll just have to tune in and find out. Sound good?
