Admittedly, I have fallen off of the beaten path with regards to checking out awards season contenders in the theaters this year. That said, I’m hoping to begin turning all of that around this afternoon as a matinee of director Jason Reitman’s Young Adult is currently on my Saturday itinerary. While I can’t claim to be a huge Diablo Cody fan (I tend to think her characters all sound the same…as in, exactly like Diablo Cody), I’m almost always happy with Reitman’s work. Moreover, Charlize Theron looks to be in rare comedic form (an arena she doesn’t always find herself in, but one she undoubtedly has the chops to pull off). All in all, here’s to hoping that my Young Adult screening is just the tip of my awards season iceberg. In the meantime…

…In this week’s “Top 5″ installment, you’ll find a slew of interviews for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, a number of new assets from director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, a recap of this crazy week in trailers, a rundown of the 69th Annual Golden Globes nods, and a light musing regarding Bridesmaids‘ awards season chances. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

by Christina Radish    Posted: December 13th, 2011 at 6:21 pm

With a career that spans three decades and encompasses well over 100 films, Hans Zimmer is one of the film industry’s leading and most influential composers. At the press junket for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Collider got the opportunity to talk to him for this exclusive interview about the challenges of scoring a sequel, incorporating the culture of the characters, particularly with the Gypsy music in the film, how much fun he had scoring for Moriarty, and that he enjoys the family atmosphere of this franchise.

He also talked about his attempt to create a sound for The Dark Knight Rises that nobody has ever heard, opening it up for the fans of the franchise to record themselves chanting, the influence that reviews and online posts have, especially when it comes to The Dark Knight franchise, and his anthem for Amnesty International’s 50th anniversary. With a career that spans three decades and encompasses well over 100 films, Hans Zimmer is one of the film industry’s leading and most influential composers. This weekend, Collider got the opportunity to chat with him at the junket for Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, and he talked about his work and approach to finding the score for each project.

While we’ll run the portion of the interview where he talked about Sherlock 2, closer to the film’s December 16th release, we did want to share what he had to say about his current work on The Dark Knight Rises. Zimmer said that in his attempt to create a sound that nobody has ever heard, he had a very ambitious idea for the film, but that it was so experimental, he didn’t know if it would actually work. Now that he’s figured out his cornerstone for the score, he’s opened it up for the fans of the franchise to record themselves because he wants hundreds of thousands of voices, chanting. He also talked about the influence that reviews and online posts have, especially when it comes to The Dark Knight franchise. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Today I’m very happy to bring you The Dark Knight Rises news that doesn’t involve grainy pictures of Christian Bale’s back. Composer Hans Zimmer is one of the best in the business, and he’s currently at work on the score for The Dark Knight Rises with James Newton Howard (the two also did The Dark Knight and Batman Begins) (Edit: Howard actually won’t be joining Zimmer on Dark Knight Rises after all). Zimmer is now turning to you, Batman fans, for help. It appears that they’ll be crowdsourcing audio to put into the finished film, and anyone with a microphone-equipped computer can participate. Hans Zimmer is one of the greatest composers working today. His iconic scores range from epic (Inception, Gladiator), to somber (The Thin Red Line) to disturbing (The Dark Knight), to experimental (Sherlock Holmes). So it’s no surprise that Disney has brought Zimmer back on board to score Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides after creating the unforgettable score for the first film of the franchise. This time, Zimmer will be teaming up with fantastic Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Mitchell Leib, President of Music and Soundtracks for Disney had this to say regarding the collaboration:

“We’d always felt it a creative necessity that the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 4’ score have an original sound all its own and to distinguish itself from the first three films.  With the inspiring addition of Rodrigo y Gabriela’s unique artistry under the direction of maestro Hans ‘Long John’ Zimmer, this iconic score franchise take its next step forward with an imaginative, fresh and individual new sound”

GHOSTBUSTERS Trailer Re-Cut to INCEPTION Score

Just when you thought that the whole “cut a trailer of a random movie set to the music from Inception” thing was getting old and over-used, something like this comes along. Someone has expertly cut a trailer for the 1984 comedy classic Ghostbusters using Hans Zimmer’s score for Inception, and it’s actually pretty damn great. This just goes to show that with the right music, and a superbly talented/creative individual, you can pretty much make a great trailer out of anything. That being said, this version of Ghostbusters looks fantastically epic. Anyway, I’ll shut up now and let you hit the jump to check it out for yourself.

With 2010 coming to a close, and the imminent arrival of an entirely fresh, unexplored, and unpredictable decade of cinema, what better time to start bombarding you with top ten lists of past highlights? We’ve done top ten posters, top ten trailers and top ten Christmas movies (and an alternate Christmas list for those who disagreed with the first).

This time: scores and soundtracks. There is a distinction between the two, but it’s murky, and as more and more films are using a mix of both original scores and pre-existing tracks, who are we to try to keep them separate?  Hit the jump for more.

A lot of trailer editors are going to get a lot of mileage out of Hans Zimmer’s Inception score.  “EditorLosAngeles” has cut together a Mad Men trailer that uses Zimmer’s music and reimagines the popular AMC drama as an intense battle of wills between an enigmatic and sinister Donald Draper and an equally determined Pete Campbell.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Hans Zimmer Debunks SUPERMAN Rumor

by Jeff Ames    Posted: December 6th, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Okay, so less than five days ago we reported that Hans Zimmer was more or less set to score Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. It made sense, what with the composer’s frequent collaborator Christopher Nolan onboard as producer. The man was even quoted as saying, in response to how he would follow-up John William’s iconic score, “It’s a hard one, but I followed one of the most iconic things on Batman with Chris as well, and it’s the same thing.”

Well, in a recent interview with THR the Academy Award-winning composer debunked this rumor stating that he is in no way attached to Superman– he hasn’t even met Zack Snyder – and that his comments were taken wildly out of context. This of course doesn’t mean Zimmer won’t score the film (his previous remarks suggest he has at least thought about it), only that he hasn’t officially been approached by Snyder and the studio heads. At this stage there is plenty of time for him to complete the billions of projects he is currently attached to and board the production.  Still, I’m betting somewhere Tyler Bates just wet himself with feverish delight. Hans Zimmer to Provide Score for SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL; Film Now Completely in Zack Snyder’s Hands

We have two brief pieces of Superman: The Man of Steel news for you today.  First up, composer Hans Zimmer will provide a brand-new score for the upcoming reboot.  Speaking to with NBC San Diego’s Scott Huver [via AICN], Zimmer said:

“It’s a hard one, but I followed one of the most iconic things on Batman with Chris as well, and it’s the same thing. You are allowed to reinvent, but you have to try to be as good or at least as iconic and it has to resonate and it has to become a part of the zeitgeist. That’s the job. On Gladiator I remember people always talking about Spartacus and I kept telling them, ‘When you saw Spartacus and how it affected it you, that’s how I want a modern audience to be affected by what we do now.’ So I think ultimately you’re supposed to reinvent.”

I think Zimmer turned in one of the best scores of the year with Inception and I’m fascinated to hear what he’ll do with Superman.  Hit the jump for more on the upcoming reboot.

INCEPTION Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 16th, 2010 at 2:22 am

“True inspiration is impossible to fake,” explains a character in Christopher Nolan’s existentialist heist film Inception.  If that’s the case, then Inception is one of the most honest films ever made.  Nolan has crafted a movie that’s beyond brilliant and layered both narratively and thematically.  It requires the audience to take in a collection of rules, exceptions, locations, jobs, and abilities in order to understand the text, let alone the fascinating subtext.  Nolan’s magnum opus is the first major blockbuster in over a decade that’s demanded intense viewer concentration, raised thoughtful and complex ideas, and wrapped everything all in a breathlessly exciting action film.  Inception may be complicated, but simply put it’s one of the best movies of the year.

INCEPTION Press Conference Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, Christopher Nolan, Hans Zimmer and Emma Thomas

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: July 12th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

A few weeks ago, Warner Bros. held a press conference with the cast and filmmakers of Inception.  Included on the lineup were Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, Director Christopher Nolan, Composer Hans Zimmer and Producer Emma Thomas.  While I hate posting press conferences as they’re usually dry and boring, with this all-star group and the fact that its Inception (which is awesome, btw), I’ve decided to make an exception.  So if you’re curious what they had to say about making the movie, hit the jump.  I’ve provided both the full transcript and the audio:
