The first unofficial set photos from Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters have leaked online.  Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as the title characters who are still harboring resentment because they were almost killed by witches when they were kids.  There’s nothing super-remarkable about the photos although you’ll see that just because you’re hunting witches, doesn’t mean you can’t look stylish.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos.  Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), the film also stars Famke Janssen, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, and Peter Stormare.  Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters opens in 3D on March 2, 2012.

We have two quick pieces of casting news for you this morning.  First up, Peter Stormare (Fargo) has joined Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Famke Janssen in Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.  The 3D re-imagining of the Grimm fairy tale has the siblings Hansel and Gretel (played by Renner and Arterton) all grown up and still holding a grudge against witches for that whole “trying to cook and eat children” unpleasantness.  According to Deadline, Stormare will play “the villainous town sheriff ‘Berringer’.”

Hit the jump for news about ubiquitous character actor Stephen Root (Office Space) joining Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar.

Norwegian actress Ingrid Bolsø Berdal is the latest to join the cast of the fairy-tale update Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. The film, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular siblings, finds Hansel and Gretel as adults, who just so happen to be bounty-hunters who specialize in killing witches. Bloody Disgusting reports that Berdal will portray one of the witches who is a “superbad killing machine.” Famke Jansenn stars in the 3D film, directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), as the head of the witches, and therefore the leading villain. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is slated for a March 2, 2012 release.

Paramount has set Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters for March 2, 2012.  The film spins the Grimm fairy tale to where Hansel and Gretel are now adults (played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, respectively) and bounty-hunters who specialize in the witch-killin’ business.  Famke Janssen will play the leader of the witches.  Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy, Adam McKay, and Kevin J. Messick will produce with Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola at the helm.

Currently, the only competition Hansel & Gretel will have that weekend is the animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.  Both films are currently set to be released in 3D. [Deadline]

Gemma Arterton has signed on to star alongside Jeremy Renner in Paramount’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.  Described by Heat Vision as a “a dark action movie that picks up with the fairy tale siblings years after the traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters,” Hansel & Gretel is being directed by Norway’s own Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow).

Per the report, Arterton beat out Diane Kruger (Inglorious Bastards), Eva Green (Casino Royale), and Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) for the lead role which could begin shooting in Berlin as early as this March.  It is believed that Paramount would like to push Hansel & Gretel ahead of Fox’s own 3D action flick Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which is currently aiming at a June 22nd, 2012 release.  In addition to Witch Hunters, Arterton also landed a role recently alongside Andrew Garfield in Michael Mann’s Capa.

Last year, we reported on the news that director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) was planning to make Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which follows Hansel and Gretel fifteen years after their ordeal with the witch and the gingerbread house — the siblings are now bounty hunters who go after witches.  At that time, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s production company, Gary Sanchez Prods., were very interested in the idea and seemed to be on board to produce the film.

We haven’t heard much about the film until today.  While doing an interview with the Norwegian website Dagsavisen (via Twitch) at Venice International Film Festival, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) let it slip that he’s up for the part of Hansel with Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) set to star as Gretel.  I sadly don’t speak Norwegian, so we don’t really have any more updates or details on the film for right now.

I’ll watch Renner in anything and this film sounds like a lot of fun, but in the meantime you can next see Renner in this fall’s The Town and in next year’s Mission: Impossible reboot.  Meanwhile, Rapace has reportedly been meeting with a lot of Hollywood producers and is in talks to possibly join Sherlock Holmes 2.

Noomi Rapace, who played Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, may be about to break out stateside in a big way.  While Rapace isn’t a household name in America yet, Stieg Larsson’s “Millenium Trilogy” (of which Dragon Tattoo is the first part) novels are still tearing up the bestseller list and the movie is one of the hottest titles on Netflix “Watch Instantly”.  Rapace also won the Swedish equivalent of an Oscar for her performance as Salander and now Magnolia Pictures wants to get her an Oscar nomination for that performance.  Deadline reports that Rapace is basically being set up to be the next Marion Cotillard.  Hit the jump to find out about the ridiculous amount of high-profile roles she’s been meeting for.
