September turns out to be D-Day for sexy Blu-ray sets. Even with the unfortunate delay of The Avengers Phase 1, we’ve still got giant collections for Titanic, James Bond, Indiana Jones and Alfred Hitchcock. The good people at Warner Bros – prepping the Harry Potter Wizard's Collection to kick off the fun – likely realized early on that they needed to bring their A-game to compete, especially with the series so recently ending and a glut of other Potter DVDs and Blu-rays readily available. Looking at the new set, however, “A-game” is an understatement. It’s more like “exercising the nuclear option.” Good luck making a splash with this 600-pound gorilla in the room. Hit the jump for my full review.

And in a lot of ways, I mean that quite literally. The massive box set weighs 19 pounds, heavy enough to crush fingers, toes and small pets if dropped. It resembles a wizard’s chest, revealing all manner of drawers, folders and slots inside. The very act of opening it constitutes a special joy, as does finding the various hidden latches and compartments where numerous goodies lay in wait.

Before we get to that, though, let’s talk about the films themselves: all eight are included, of course, in both DVD and Blu-ray editions. The first two include extended editions as well as the theatrical versions. We’ll take basic familiarity with the Potterverse as a given.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
The inaugural entry in the series actually gets off to a comparatively rocky start. ...

The most successful film franchise of all time will be available on home video in one nifty box set early next week with the release of the Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection, and a devoted fan has put together a rather impressive video retrospective to mark the occasion. Titled “Mischief Managed,” the video goes through all eight film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s wondrous series, with scenes accompanied by the franchise’s various scores. It’s a great watch for Harry Potter fans, but it’s also interesting to see the different directors’ visions back-to-back. The story gets dark quite fast, but it’s neat to see it progress from the colorful, faithful touch of Chris Columbus on the first two films, to Alfonso Cuaron’s inventive and playful twist on Azkaban, to the bombastic Britishness of Mike Newell’s Goblet of Fire, and finally David Yates’ grounded yet haunting stamp on the final four films.

Hit the jump to watch the fan-made video retrospective. The Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection will be available on September 7th.

This video was put together by Kees van Dijkhuizen Jr. (via First Showing):

Many of you know that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is preparing to write a new novel aimed at adults, but what's a Potter fan to do in the meantime? Well, now that all eight films have been released, you can pre-order the ultimate movie set dubbed, Harry Potter Wizards Collection on Blu-ray / DVD Combo with UltraViolet Digital Copy. Details have yet to be confirmed and there is not currently a street date , but the pre-order price is set at about $350 ("marked down" from $500). It's a limited and numbered edition of 31 discs with over 5 hours of never-before-seen footage. The special collectibles include a map of Hogwarts and concept art, while some of the features appear to have extended editions. Hit the jump to check out the collection.

The $350 price tag will be a lot easier to swallow once Warner Bros. releases some details about the "Wizards Collection." So far, Amazon-Canada has this listed under additional description:

Well this is a bit drastic. Very soon, it’s going to be incredibly difficult to buy any of the Harry Potter films. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is set to stop shipping all Harry Potter theatrical releases (including both Deathly Hallows films) starting December 29th. Coincidentally, a comprehensive set that includes all eight Harry Potter films is set to be released on Blu-ray November 11th. The report doesn’t state whether or not this set is included in the shipping hault, but it’s highly unlikely. It seems that WB might be making Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection fans’ only way of purchasing the most successful franchise in film history [Edit: Variety reports that the 8-Film Collection is included in the shipping stop, so it will be unavailable after the 29th as well].

While I’m inclined to run out and grab this comprehensive set, I’m hoping for a much more impressive retrospective set released sometime in the next few years that’ll include new special features. But at this time, no plans for such a set are confirmed. Maybe Warner Bros. is planning on releasing the single films vault-style like Disney, where the movies are available one at a time for a limited period? At this point, all we know is that production ceases on December 29th, so if you own some or most of the films already and were planning on completing your collection, I’d suggest you do so before Christmas.

At the moment the estimates for the weekend’s two top films are dead even: a box office rarity. Both Cowboys and Aliens and The Smurfs are claiming estimates of $36.2 million - a figure that is slightly embarrassing for one film and a near miracle for the other.

One week ago Cowboys and Aliens was the obvious choice for a number one finish with as much as $50 million while The Smurfs seemed destined for the type of “Judy Moody,” also-ran commentary that I routinely tack on to the end of my column. Instead it seems probable that The Smurfs will wind up the weekend winner by the time actual figures are revealed on Monday thanks to Sunday’s family audience uptick.

There has been talk of bringing The Smurfs to the big screen for at least a decade. The little blue gnomes were a marketing juggernaut in the 1980s (thanks to a popular cartoon and thousands of tiny plastic collectables) and continued to be big overseas even longer. The Smurfs movie truly got off the ground following the success of Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks films, both of which earned over $200 million at the domestic box office. Still, few outside of Sony foresaw an outsized success for The Smurfs. For starters, both Alvin films had December release dates: prime time for family films. Add in the recent trend of diminishing returns for both talking critter pics and 3D ...

Though it was very clear that the weekend record would fall after Deathly Hallows 2 took in an absolutely staggering $43.5 million from its Friday midnight screenings alone, earlier in the week it looked like Harry’s curtain call would leave The Dark Knight’s record intact. With Deathly Hallows 1 taking in $125 million in its first weekend last November (the former franchise high), the accepted wisdom was that Part 2 would top out at $150 million. By Friday night, however, a high end of $180 million seemed more likely. The new projection relied on two factors: higher 3D ticket prices at a record 70% of Potter’s venues and the fact that Part 1’s first weekend gross was roughly double its take from its opening day. Part 2 went on to secure the single-day record with a giant $91.2 million so, if my math is correct, double that and you get a bit more than $180 million.

As of this morning’s estimate the actual weekend of Deathly Hallows 2 came in between the two projections. While still enough to give Potter what is probably the most coveted domestic box office title, it ...

With the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 only four days away, Warner Bros. has released a five-minute retrospective that looks at the previous seven films in the franchise. It won't catch you up but for fans of the series, it's nice to see how the actors have grown and how the visual style and tone has changed over the years. I re-watched all seven movies this past weekend and after the jump you can check out the retrospective as well as my brief thoughts on the films. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opens in 3D this Friday.

Here are my brief thoughts on the films. Hopefully when the Blu-ray box set comes out, I can do full-length reviews for each of the movies.

[Spoilers ahead]

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

It's tough to give director Chris Columbus credit for anything, but he deserves praise for the following: laying the foundation for the franchise. The art direction, the costumes, and everything that J.K. Rowling described in her book first came to life with Columbus' oversight. He also did a fantastic job casting the adult actors. I can't imagine anyone other than Alan Rickman playing Snape, or Maggie Smith playing McGonagall, or Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, or the late Richard Harris as Dumbledore. Where Columbus hit a snag was with his casting of the child actors, or rather, his direction of them. Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint are just bad in this movie and when I ...

Less than a month after making The Dark Knight available for rental via Facebook, Warner Bros. has added five more of their movies to the social networking site. The studio has announced via press release that Facebook users can now rent Inception, Life as We Know It, Yogi Bear, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Make no mistake: other studios are watching this experiment closely and seeing how popular it becomes. The real trick for Warner Bros. and for Facebook is working to get these movies out of browsers and onto other platforms like video game consoles, Roku, mobile devices, etc.

Hit the jump for the full press release.

Watching the first Harry Potter film again, I find myself coming to the conclusion that Chris Columbus was the perfect director for this material. Yeah, maybe he got weighed down in the second film, and it doesn't hold up as well as the rest of the run (it is the worst of the series to date) that was also the case with the book. What Columbus brought was the nuts and bolts and got the child actors to deliver enough to suggest that they could handle the rest of the franchise. On that he delivered. My review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Ultimate Edition after the jump

What Columbus did that was so important was that he broke in the cast. Though the kids range from being okay to pretty good, for the most part they are engaging, and though at this late date it's hard to separate them from their characters, they were well cast. Daniel Radcliffe is the spitting image of the book's covers, and he does a fine job with the role. Rupert Grint is probably the weakest link, but he manages his own, while it's weird how Emma Watson has both grown into the role and her looks. To be fair, they uglied her up a bit in the first film.

The premise is that Harry Potter has lived among normal people all his life (muggles) and once he hits 11, he's invited to a private boarding school for wizards called Hogwarts. So much fiction that's ...

Last month, rumors began to surface that Warner Bros. was going to release ultimate editions of the first two "Harry Potter" movies. While no one was sure if it would be theatrical or on home video, today WB officially announced the titles and they are home video releases.

So to help promote the December 8th release, WB has cut a new trailer which details what you can expect to see on the DVD's and Blu-rays and if you're a fan of the "Harry Potter" franchise, I'm sorry to say...you'll be double dipping this holiday season. Watch the trailer and read about the extras after the jump:

Since reading about what's coming is not as fun as watching a video, here's the trailer for the new ultimate editions. As you'll see, the plan is for the first two films to get special editions this year and I'd imagine we'll get two or three more next year. Of course, the big question is what will Warner Bros. do when the franchise is over. Could they eventually re-release all the ultimate editions in theaters? I think they will. After all, there will always be kids who haven't seen the adventures of "Harry Potter" on the big screen and since the films are loved, people will probably pay to see them again. Especially if there is new footage.

And while Warner Bros. is releasing both DVD and Blu-ray editions, I'm just posting the Blu-ray info. The big news is the "Sorcerer's Stone" will have 7 minutes of ...
