VANISHING ON 7TH STREET Blu-ray Review

by Scott Wampler    Posted: July 8th, 2011 at 5:47 am

Brad Anderson is– in this humble critic’s opinion– one of our most underappreciated directors.  This is the guy that made my absolute favorite horror movie of the decade (Session 9, see it immediately if you’ve never caught it), the guy that pulled the best performance I’ve ever seen out of Christian Bale (The Machinist, a film I doubly appreciate for its inherent weirdness and its frequent pseudo-references to Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor), the guy that made… Next Stop Wonderland?  Well, everyone’s gotta stop somewhere.  Anderson’s most recent stop?  The Vanishing on 7th Street, which arrived to not a lot of critical acclaim last year.  Is the film as pedestrian and disappointing as you might’ve heard?  Does star Hayden Christensen turn in an Attack of The Clones-level performance?  Find out after the jump, folks…

Exclusive Video Interviews with the Cast of TAKERS

by Jonah    Posted: August 25th, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Last weekend, the six stars from Screen Gems’ upcoming heist film Takers sat down to talk with the media, and I was there.  Takers follows a close-knit crew of thieves who plan the perfect heist, one that will leave them set for life.  Of course, the cops have to chase the robbers, and the robbers aren’t even sure if they can trust each other.  Stars Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen, Jay Hernandez, Michael Ealy, Chris Brown, and Tip T.I. Harris all had plenty to say about planning the perfect heist, working together, and their upcoming projects including Jumper 2 and Thor!  You can watch all three interviews after the jump.

Takers takes you into the world of a notorious group of criminals (Idris Elba, Paul Walker, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Michael Ealy) who continue to baffle police by pulling off perfectly executed bank robberies. They are in and out like clockwork, leaving no evidence behind and laying low between heists. But when they attempt to pull off one last job with more money at stake than ever before, the crew may find their plans interrupted by a hardened detective (Matt Dillon) who is hell-bent on solving the case.

Hayden Christensen Says JUMPER 2 Is in the Works

For those of you who thought Jumper was a good movie and worth its own franchise, we have some good news.  Speaking to MTV, Hayden Christensen said “We’re talking about it right now actually,” and that the story will be, “somewhere a little darker. I think there’s a lot you can do with it. It was sort of set up in a way it’s gonna be mother hunting son and possibly even maybe sister hunting brother. We’re talking about it, trying to figure it out.”  I don’t see Jamie Bell’s name anywhere in that response.  That’s a problem seeing as he was easily the best thing in Jumper.

People in Hollywood talk about almost any film to keep it alive.  Ask an actor “What are your thoughts on a sequel to X” and the response is almost always along the lines of, “I haven’t heard anything but I’d be open to it if there’s a good story.”  (I long for the day when an actor responds, “I’d be open to it if there’s a dumptruck full of money in it for me.”)  Jumper 2 may be a bit further along, but I wouldn’t bet on seeing any serious movement on it any time soon.

Trailer and New Images for THE VANISHING ON 7TH STREET Starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, and John Leguizamo

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 18th, 2010 at 11:18 am

I didn’t know much about Brad Anderson’s upcoming horror film The Vanishing on 7th Street, but after seeing the trailer I think the film looks pretty sweet.  The movie is about a the mass dissaperance of apparently the entire world’s population, and the need to stay in the light in order to remain non-disappeared. I dig the cool Twilight Zone-esque premise.  I also like seeing John Leguizamo not react to a terrifying phenomenon with math puzzles.  The film also stars Hayden Christensen and Thandie Newton.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, images and the synopsis.  The Vanishing on 7th Street will be playing as part of the Midnight Madness program at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

STAR WARS and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Producer Gary Kurtz Speaks Bluntly about George Lucas, RETURN OF THE JEDI, and More

In a fascinating interview, Gary Kurtz, who produced Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, spoke bluntly on a variety Star Wars-related topics.  Kurtz talked about the original plot for Return of the Jedi and how selling toys twisted it into something else, his thoughts on the prequel, and what was his relationship with George Lucas was like before Star Wars changed everything.

Kurtz has so many great things to say, especially if you’re like me and love hearing about movies that never were or how they were originally set up to be.  Hit the jump for quotes that are a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Star Wars.

EVERYTHING MUST GO, Starring Will Ferrell, Heads to the Toronto International Film Festival; THE VANISHING ON 7th STREET and BUNRAKU to also Play

The upcoming dramedy Everything Must Go is headed to this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.  Based on the Raymond Carver short story, Dan Rush’s low-budget dramedy centers on a recovering alcoholic (played by Will Ferrell) “who falls off the wagon, is tossed from both his job and home, and must survive on his front lawn by selling his belongings in a yard sale.”  Ferrell scored another hit this weekend when The Other Guys scored $35.6 million at the box office this weekend.  While I enjoyed the film, I always want to see Ferrell in roles outside his comfort zone and his part in Everything Must Go sounds like one of them.

THR also reports that Brad Anderson’s thriller The Vanishing on 7th Street, starring Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo, and Guy Moshe’s action noir movie Bunraku, starring Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson, will play at the festival.  The 2010 Toronto International Film Festival will run from September 9 – 19th.

Screen Gems has released a new trailer for Takers which stars Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen, Zoe Saldana, Jay Hernandez and Tip ‘T.I.’ Harris.  The movie is about a notorious group of bank robbers and their last job.   After watching the trailer, all I could think was Takers is like the McDonalds version of Heist.  Judge for yourself after the jump.

First Images from Brad Anderson’s VANISHING ON 7TH STREET

by Matt Currie    Posted: May 18th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

When I first heard about Vanishing on 7th Street a few months back, I was intrigued. First of all, it follows a group of people suffering through the aftermath of the mass, unexplained disappearance of seemingly everyone else in the world: an awesome concept that’s right up my alley. Add to that a really cool director in Brad Anderson (The Machinist) and you’ve got something that should rate pretty high on the flicks-to-watch-for meter.  But ultimately, you just never know until you see some kind of visual evidence.

Well, now we’ve got some. Quiet Earth has the first five stills from the film and while there’s not a whole lot going on in most of them, they are freaking gorgeous, absolutely oozing stylish creepiness. Vanishing, which should drop some time in 2010, is officially one of my most anticipated films of the year.  Hit the jump to check out the images.  Vanishing on 7th Street stars Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, and John Leguizamo.

Hayden Christensen To Star in THE GENESIS CODE For Director David R. Ellis

by David Lane    Posted: May 7th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

Hayden Christensen has agreed to star in director David R. Ellis’ (Snakes on a Plane, The Final Destination) upcoming thriller The Genesis Code, based on the novel by the same name written by John Case.  Here’s the synopsis:

The story follows a former national security expert, played by Christensen, who, while investigating the murder of his only sister and her young son, discovers that a religious sect called The Shadow of the Cross may be involved. With the help of his sister’s friend Ana, they follow the clues to a clinic in the mountains of Italy, where a terrifying secret experiment has been conducted – successfully. The results are so threatening to the foundation of the Church that they will do anything to keep it from being revealed.

The film’s screenplay is written by Kevin Bernhardt.  Myriad Pictures, who will co-produce the film, owns all rights worldwide, will be selling the film at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes.   You can read the press release after the jump:

SPLICE Director Vincenzo Natali to Helm Adaptation of William Gibson’s NEUROMANCER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 7th, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Director Vincenzo Natali (Splice) has signed on to helm Fire Development Inc.’s adaptation of William Gibson’s seminal cyberpunk novel NeuromancerTHR provides a nice one sentence plot synopsis for the book: “a washed-up computer hacker hired by a mysterious employer to work on the ultimate hack.”   Joseph Kahn (Torque) had been attached since early 2008 and as recently as Monday was telling the /Filmcast how he was still committed to the film and his plans for it.  Not sure what happened in the last five days, but I’d listen to this week’s episode of /Filmcast After Dark to find out.

I think the best news is that if Natali’s been brought on board, it shows that the film may be moving out of development hell and it may get out even faster should Splice turn out to be a hit when it opens on June 4th.

90-Minute Video Review of STAR WARS: EPISODE II – ATTACK OF THE CLONES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 4th, 2010 at 11:42 am

slice_star_wars_episode_2_attack_clones_01.jpg

After his wildly successful 70-minute video review of The Phantom Menace, Red Letter Media has returned with a 90-minute review of Attack of the Clones.  While RLM was able to get through the plot of the first movie, this time around he focuses more on the uncomfortable “romance” and the terrible action sequences.  But like the first mega-review, he points out a lot of inconsistencies and contradictions I never noticed or at least forced myself to forget.

This is definitely going to be a more controversial installment when it comes to his points about what women want in a guy, why Samuel L. Jackson was cast in the film, and that it’s possible to have too many lightsabers.  Whether you agree or not, well…that’s why we have a comments section.  (But I hope we all agree he needs to drop the lame serial killer stuff)

New York I Love You movie poster - slice.jpg

With the short film anthology “New York, I Love You” (a sort of sequel to “Paris, je t’aime”) set for release October 16th, Vivendi Entertainment has released a ton of clips and I’ve posted all of them after the jump. While most film’s get four to eight clips released for promotional purposes, due to how large the cast is and how each person needs a clip when promoting the movie on a talk show, the studio has released a whopping 16 clips and it’s about sixteen minutes of the movie. So if you’ve been waiting for the film, you can see a lot of it right now. If you’re not familiar with “New York, I Love You”, the film’s got a huge cast and eleven directors telling stories about New York City and love. Take a look:
