HAYWIRE Blu-ray Review

Steven Soderbergh approached Haywire as a chance to turn Gina Carano into a movie star. As she’s been cast in the next Fast and Furious movie, it’s likely that we’ll see more from her. But Soderbergh approached doing an action movie as an art project, so he played with the structure and style of the modern action film. It’s ambitious, and not entirely successful. But he was right on the money that Carano can carry a movie. Haywire costars Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGreggor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton, and our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Weekend Box Office – UNDERWORLD AWAKENING Leads with $25.4 Million; RED TAILS Second with $19.1 Million

Underworld Awakening had no trouble topping a crowded field of new or expanding releases this weekend. Nine years after the action-horror series launched, Underworld 4 took in an estimated $25.4 million from 3,078 locations for the second-highest opening weekend in the franchise’s history. Red Tails also had reason to be happy with its second-place showing while returns for the week’s three other highly-touted features were more modest.

In last week’s “Top 5″ I spent the opening paragraph musing about my anticipation for Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire. I also promised the readers a quick “Before & After” discussion this week which would address whether or not the pic lived up to my expectations. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but said discussion will have to be postponed. I know, I know, I’m disappointed too. Fear not, though, I’m slated to check out the film tonight which means that I’ll be able to deliver on my promise, albeit a week late. In the meantime…

BEL-AMI Starring Robert Pattinson and Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE to Screen at Berlin Film Festival

The 62nd Berlin International Film Festival has added a few new films to its program. Declan Donnellan and Nick Omerod’s adaptation of the 1885 Guy de Maupassant novel Bel-Ami will finally premiere out of competition at the festival. The film stars Robert Pattinson, Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, and Kristin Scott Thomas and has been lingering without a U.S. release date for some time now. It’s set to open in the U.K. in March, and hopefully with this Berlin premiere the drama will pick up some steam and head towards a domestic release.

Additionally, Steven Soderbergh’s action spy-thriller Haywire has also been selected to screen out of competition at the fest. Featuring MMA fighter Gina Carano surrounded by an all-star cast of Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, and Michael Fassbender, the pic opens today here in the U.S. Also poised to screen at the festival is Billy Bob Thornton’s Jayne Mansfield’s Car, the drama Shadow Dancer starring Clive Owen, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

With director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire opening tomorrow, I recently got to speak with most of the cast about making the movie.  Starring MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers, Haywire also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill Paxton.  I’ve seen Haywire twice now and it’s fantastic.  On top of Carano’s star-making performance, the action scenes are some of the best I’ve seen in years.   It’s absolutely something you should see in a theater.

During the press junket I got to speak to Channing Tatum twice.  The first time we just talked about Haywire. However, the second time we covered a ton of other topics like what the last year has been like for him, his relationship with Soderbergh, how Magic Mike came together and it’s rating, what it was like working with Matthew McConaughey, and what happened to The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. In addition, Tatum revealed he has a small part in Soderbergh’s next picture, The Bitter Pill (which might now be called The Side Effects), and we ended talking about Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher - which he might star in with Steve Carell. HAYWIRE Review

Men are taught (or at least they should be taught) to never hit a woman.  The lesson is based on the assumption that women are physically weaker and don’t have the strength to defend themselves (also, hitting people isn’t very nice in general).  But what if the woman can not only hit back, but her job is to hit back and she knows how to hit back harder than anyone?  In Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire, mercenary Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is that woman, and Soderbergh is unapologetic about having her hit in return.  The film forces us to confront our convictions about the fragility of women, and where that belief comes from.  Is the movie a blow for equality in showing that women can take and dish out a beating like a man?  Is a woman’s physicality always sexual?  Haywire doesn’t have easy answers to these questions, but it has no problem asking them under the cover of a badass European flavored action-thriller.

During my interview with Carano we talked about how she went from being an MMA fighter to getting cast in a Soderbergh film, what was the hardest stunt and what made her the most nervous, and deleted scenes. In addition, as some of you may have already seen, after watching Haywire the second time all I could think about was how Carano should play Wonder Woman.  So while I usually start off my interviews asking a karaoke question, with this one, I started with what she thought of Wonder Woman and if anyone had asked her to play the part yet.  Hit the jump to watch.

Attention Warner Bros: We’ve Found Your WONDER WOMAN and Her Name is Gina Carano

There’s no need to keep searching for the right actress, Warner Bros.; Gina Carano is Wonder Woman.  While you might think I’m joking around….I’m not.  That’s because after watching director Steven Soderbergh’s awesome spy-action pic Haywire twice, I really believe Carano is who you’re looking for.  After everyone gets the chance to see her kick ass next week (the pic opens January 20), I’m extremely confident that fandom will agree with me.  Hire a new writer to craft a script with Carano in mind; they’ll be inspired.  I think one of the reasons Wonder Woman hasn’t come together is you didn’t know who to cast.  Thankfully, the search is over.

Being serious, after watching Haywire the second time, I kept thinking Carano would be great as Wonder Woman and it was on my mind when I sat down to talk to her a few days ago.  While I usually start with my karaoke question, I decided to ask what she thought of Wonder Woman and if anyone had asked her to play the part yet.  Watch what she had to say after the jump.

Watch the First 5 Minutes of Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE

It’s safe to say that Steven Soderbergh’s action pic Haywire looks fantastically badass. Both Brendan and I chose it as one of our most anticipated films of 2012’s first quarter, and now the first five minutes of the film are online for your viewing pleasure. While I’ve refrained from watching it as I’d like to go into the movie fresh, if you’re on the fence about the pic I highly suggest you check it out. They showed the first trailer at last year’s Comic-Con and I wasn’t too impressed, but immediately afterward Soderbergh screened a fight sequence between star/MMA fighter Gina Carano and Michael Fassbender that blew me away. Among the wealth of movie goods we were privy to at Comic-Con, that fight has stuck with me and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the film plays out.
