We have a couple minor casting stories for you this afternoon.  First up, Dougray Scott and Kara Tointon will lead Omid Nooshin’s low-budget thriller Last Passenger.  Per THR, the film tells “the story of a doctor who finds himself on a runaway commuter train.”  A runaway train is serious business and at the very least that doctor is going to be seriously inconvenienced.  The film is part of Pinewood Shepperton’s investment fund for low-budgeted movies.  With a budget slightly above £1.2 million ($2.5 million), Last Passenger will be co-financed by Future Film and the BFI Film Fund.  According to THR, “Pinewood Shepperton is aiming to back four films a year from first-timers, with a combined budget of around $13 million.”  Their first film is the Crispian Mills and Chris Hopewell “psycho-comedy” A Fantastic Fear of Everything starring Simon Pegg.

Hit the jump for casting news on the next film from Ramin Bahrani (Goodbye Solo).

Trailer, Poster, and Images from FATHER OF INVENTION Starring Kevin Spacey

A promotional onslaught is in effect for director Trent Cooper’s comedy Father of Invention as a new trailer, poster, and a slew of new images from the film have gone online. Starring Kevin Spacey, Heather Graham, Craig Robinson, Virginia Madsen, Johnny Knoxville, John Stamos, and Camilla Belle, the film centers on a former infomercial guru (Spacey) who finds himself in prison after a design flaw in one of his inventions de-fingers many of his customers. From there, Father of Invention looks to document Spacey’s attempted return to “As Seen on TV” glory.

The pic looks a little formulaic in its “Guy A is a bad person who must first learn how to change himself before he can really make any sort of difference” approach. Nevertheless, the cast is great and when compared to Cooper’s last directorial effort, Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, I’m sure Father of Invention is awards-season material. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, images, and an official synopsis for the film. Father of Invention opens on October 14th.

Heather Graham, Dev Patel and Lili Taylor in Talks to Join James Franco in CHERRY

A trio of actors are currently in negotiations to star alongside James Franco in the Stephen Elliott-directed Cherry. Variety reports that Heather Graham, Dev Patel and Lili Taylor are in talks to star in the film, which pits Franco as a cocaine-addicted lawyer. The story revolves around an 18-year-old girl who moves to San Francisco and joins the porn industry. She becomes involved with Franco’s character.

Returning to familiar territory, Graham is eyeing the role of a former porn star turned director who takes an interest in the young girl. Patel would play the girl’s best friend who just happens to also be in love with her, while Taylor will play the girl’s alcoholic mother. Elliot and Lorelei Lee co-wrote the script. Production is set to begin next month in San Francisco, after Franco wraps The Stare with Winona Ryder. He’ll begin shooting Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful this August, bringing his grand total of movies filmed in 2011 to about 37.

Jamie Chung Joins THE HANGOVER 2

Jamie Chung has joined the cast of The Hangover 2.  According to THR, Chung will be playing the fiancée of Ed Helms’ character, Stu.  No word if this is a real fiancée or if it’s another drunken fiasco like Stu’s engagement to the stripper/escort played by Heather Graham in the first movie.  While Graham will not be returning for the sequel, supporting characters Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson have somehow found a place in the new movie, which will be set in Thailand.  In addition to Chung, the only other new face in the movie (that we know of so far) is a cameo role of a Bangkok tattoo artist played by Liam Neeson.

Chung will next be seen in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.  She also recently finished shooting on the thriller Premium Rush opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  The Hangover 2 is set to open on May 26, 2011.

THX 1138 and LOST IN SPACE Blu-ray Reviews

There are both rational and irrational reasons for hating the prequel trilogy. With the rise of Red Letter Media, that internet phenomenon that has made a name shit-talking the Star Trek: Next Generations films, and The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, there is a more present sense of disappointment with the Lucas empire- but it’s something that has been haunting Lucas about a couple days after people started seeing TPM and word set in. But as not great as the prequels were, there’s other reasons to be bummed about those films besides just fan service. Until he made the prequel trilogy, George Lucas had a stunning cinematic record as a director. His first film THX 1138 is a classic, and deserves to be appreciated. Another reason to be disappointed is that he led the way for films like Lost in Space, the 1998 warm-up for the prequel trilogy. Lucas whetted a lot of appetites, but the man also showed a talent for the game. My review of both THX 1138 and Lost in Space on Blu-ray follow the jump.

The Hangover DVD Blu-ray - slice.jpg

When you sell a few million copies on DVD/Blu-ray it’s impressive.  But when you sell 8.6 million – including 1.5 million Blu-rays – in just over 3 weeks, it’s time to burn hundreds and drink Cristal.  And that’s what everyone involved in The Hangover is probably doing right now as the smash comedy is the #1 comedy of all time on DVD.

THE HANGOVER Unrated Blu-ray Review

The Hangover DVD Blu-ray - slice.jpg

Few films have come out the box recently like The Hangover. Sure there have been films that have become a part of the conversation, and the Apatow films were hundred million dollar pictures, but The Hangover was a phenomenon. Granted I live in a world where people don’t make “fat Jesus” jokes any more. As part of the target demo for this, I’m happy my friends aren’t the guys quoting this film ad nauseum, but I feel like this film managed to hit the nerves that Austin Powers did in maximum quotability, so my residual like may be tempered by other’s exhaustion. My review of The Hangover Blu-ray after the fold.

Virginia Madsen Joins Kevin Spacey in FATHER OF INVENTION

Virginia Madsen has joined the cast of “Father of Invention”, the indie comedy from Kevin Spacey’s Trigger Street Productions.  Spacey plays a down-on-his-luck inventor turned billionaire-inventor who once again finds himself down on his luck when an invention goes horribly awry – that Slap-Chop was always too good to be true.  Madsen will play Spacey’s wife in the film which is being directed by Trent Cooper (“Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector”).  “Invention” has already begun filming in New Orleans with co-stars Camilla Belle, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville and the great Craig Robinson.

Audio Interviews from THE HANGOVER Junket

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: June 1st, 2009 at 8:38 pm

The Hangover movie poster- heather graham.jpgOpening this Friday is director Todd Phillip’s new comedy “The Hangover”. As I’ve said many times, the film is laugh out loud funny and absolutely worth a full price ticket this weekend. So to help promote the film, I was recently in Las Vegas for the press junket. In the coming days I’ll be posting some transcripts and exclusive interviews, but until then, I’m offering some of the roundtable interviews as audio files.

With the new design of Collider, I’m going to experiment with the way I offer content. While we’ll always have transcripts of selected interviews, I’m going to try and post the audio files of my interviews on the day they happen. At least that’s the dream.

Anyway, if you’re looking forward to “The Hangover”, or just want to hear some of the cast talk, just click on the links. And if you missed the movie clips from “The Hangover”, click here. They’re great.

THE HANGOVER – 8 Movie Clips and a Featurette

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: May 17th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

head-ed.jpgWhen I woke up this morning I was at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas attending the press junket for the VERY funny Warner Bros. movie “The Hangover”. While I’ll have interviews with the cast and filmmakers in the coming days, I was provided with a bunch of movie clips and a featurette, so I wanted to post those now.

Since I’ve gone on and on about this movie when I posted my set visit about a month ago, let’s get right to why you’re here – the clips.

As you’re about to see, this movie is all about what happens when you go to Vegas and have a crazy time. And for the two that haven’t heard about “The Hangover”, I’ve included the synopsis after the jump:
