Before Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer (the two stars of Beastly) won their ShoWest Awards for Male and Female Stars of Tomorrow, they came into the media room and answered some questions from the press. While the questions asked bordered on some of the dumbest I have ever heard in a media room, I know Vanessa Hudgens has a lot of fans from the High School Musical series so I figured you’d still like to see the interview. With the success of High School Musical, it’s no surprise Disney is developing new projects starring teenagers. The latest one is called Prom, and as you might have guessed, it’s a comedy about a group of teenagers getting ready for the big dance. The project is going to be written by Katie Wech (The Dead Zone) and Joe Nussbaum (Sydney White, Sleepover) will direct. According to Variety, Disney is looking at a number of ways to put the project together, including casting unknowns as the leads to keep costs down. They are looking at the teen comedies of John Hughes and Cameron Crowe for tone.
While dropping those names is always the right thing to do in a press release, they were both geniuses at crafting honest and accurate portrayals of teenage life. Many have tried and failed to imitate their High School movies. So good luck to Joe Nussbaum on this one.

As reported by THR’s Heat Vision Blog, Zac Efron is set to headline Universal’s upcoming flick Fire, which will be adapted from Brian Michael Bendis’ graphic novel. The original property tells the tale of an ordinary college kid who’s recruited into a top-secret CIA training program that specializes in turning regular folks into superspies. In addition to starring, Efron will also exec produce alongside his manager, Jason Barret.
You heard right, people. Zac Efron is your next action hero. Stay tuned to Collider to find out which of the Four Horseman touches down on Earth first…my money’s on Pestilence. Joking aside, this is a natural next step for the High School Musical star. He got his first real taste of solo box office success with last spring’s 17 Again, a film that very much appealed to his HSM audience. Now it’s time to take away the safety net. It’s difficult to gauge just how willing the action crowd will be to embrace him. However, stepping into the role of an average guy who’s gradually transformed into an action hero throughout the course of a film is probably the best way possible to attempt the transition from singing-dancing tween pin-up to major-league ass-kicker. We’ll see if it’s enough.

Director Kenny Ortega has left Paramount Pictures “Footloose” remake over differences on tone and budget. According to Variety, the studio wanted “an edgier drama with less emphasis on the musical numbers and a budget around $25 million or less.” Ortega, who previously directed all three “High School Musical” films and the upcoming Michael Jackson movie “This Is It”, wanted a film with elaborately staged musical numbers and a higher budget.
