Between festivals and theatrical releases, I saw over 100 new films this year. Some were awful, some were good, and some were mediocre. And then there were the movies that stayed with me, and more importantly, held up on repeat viewings. In past years, I've usually only had one chance to watch a movie and sometimes the initial positive impression was enough to land it on my annual Top 10 list. Then I looked back on the list six months later and realized some films shouldn't have made the cut. This year, I got to attend major festivals and received "For Your Consideration screeners, which made it easier to double-check movies I enjoyed. If you're wondering why movies that originally received an a high rating didn't make the list, it's because while I still liked them on a second viewing, their faults became more apparent. The movies on my Top Ten list became better on repeat viewings and I look forward to watching them again and again over the years.

Hit the jump to check out my picks for the Top 10 films of 2011.

10. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN

Reminder: this is my Top 10 list. If you want something closer to an "objective" list, pop over to Rotten Tomatoes. Hobo with a Shotgun felt like it was made to appeal directly to my sick sense of humor. The movie is nothing but sheer, unadulterated madness but director Jason Eisener brings a method to it. There's a surprisingly level of creativity in ...

The best movie posters come from Mondo, other art-boutiques, and individual artists who take their passion for a film and turn it into something that every fan has to own. Studios don't have that luxury. They need to sell a movie to an audience that has no idea what they're in for. They need to find a way to appeal to everyone, or at least get their attention. Usually studios go for the dull route of floating movie star heads and/or blue-orange color schemes. My picks for the best studio-produced posters of 2011 were the posters that went beyond and tried to do something better.

Hit the jump to check out my choices for the Top 10 Posters of 2011.

[Note: Only the poster had to come out this year, not the film. Also, I'm referring to the studio as the designer of these posters, but I'm aware that the design is outsourced to ad companies.]

BEST POSTERS

10. Haywire

Gina Carano may be a star among MMA fans, but she's unknown to mainstream audiences. Relativity used her relative anonymity to their advantage with this teaser poster and had her character straddle some poor/lucky chap. It's a nice way to sell the sex and violence but without showing Carano's lovely face.

9. The Devil's Double

Auric Goldfinger may have gone overboard, but Lionsgate got an eye-catching poster out of it. You instantly understand that The Devil's Double is a tale of excessive wealth and violence and you don't even need to read the crappy tagline hidden ...

Though Hobo With a Shotgun started as a faux-trailer entered in a "Create your own Grindhouse-esque trailer" contest being held by Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez around the time they released their own Grindhouse double-feature, the result of a dark joke between director Jason Eisener and a couple of his friends. The faux-trailer won the contest, ended up being fleshed out into a full screenplay, recruited Rutger Hauer as the titular Hobo before cameras rolled, then proceeded to mop the floor with Rodriguez' own Machete (another faux-trailer-turned-actual-movie associated with Grindhouse) amongst critics. Now it's available on DVD and Blu-ray, and Eisener's on his way to being another film-geek-friendly, gen-yoo-whine movie director. Not bad for something that started life as a joke between friends. Question is, is it any good? Find out in our Hobo With a Shotgun review, after the jump...

It's hard to review a film like Hobo With a Shotgun, because Hobo With a Shotgun isn't really "just another movie awaiting review". Watching Hobo With a Shotgun is less a movie and more of a movie-watching-experience, something I suspect is best appreciated in a crowded theater filled with drunks and gore-hounds. To be sure, it's got all the hallmarks of a real movie-- there's a plot, actors, a few character archs, and a resolution-- but it's really just a gore-machine turned up to 11, a primary-colored freakshow designed to shock, disturb, or excite its audience from the very first scene (which features a dude being brutally-- and creatively-- decapitated before ...

[This review is a reprint of my review that ran during this year's Sundance Film Festival. Hobo with a Shotgun blasts its way into US theaters this weekend.]

Sometimes, being insane in your filmmaking isn’t enough. To make something special, a filmmaker requires a spark of creativity to light the flames of a madness explosion. Hobo with a Shotgun is a Hiroshima of creative insanity. Director Jason Eisener has not only paid homage to 70s exploitation films, he’s made a film that could easily have stood amongst it ranks. Every time you think the movie can’t become any more crazy, any more grotesque, or any more disgusting, it takes out its penis and starts masturbating in public while raving about how cans of Progresso soup are running a shadow government.

The film is based off a fake trailer Eisener made for the 2007 Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodrigues flick Grindhouse. Expanded in to a feature film, the story centers on a hobo (Rutger Hauer) who has rode the rails to Hope Fuck Town, the unhappiest place on Earth if you’re anyone but the sadistic freaks who run it. Running the show is Drake (Brian Downey), a gangster with the attitude of a game show host, and his two sons Slick (Gregory Smith) and Ivan (Nick Bateman). The murder-happy brothers make Uday and Qusay Hussein look like Goofus and Gallant. As the Drake and his family murder anyone they want in the most ...

This weekend cinemagoers will be treated to an absurdly entertaining 86-minute blood-soaked love letter to exploitation sleaze called Hobo With A Shotgun. Filled with severed limbs, endangered children, empowered hookers, super-powered thugs, and a grizzled lawn care obsessed Rutger Hauer, the film grabs you by the throat and demands that you enjoy the guiltiest of cinematic pleasures. Such a batshit insane film suggests that it comes from an equally insane filmmaker, but Collider got a chance to chat with Hobo’s sweetly low key director Jason Eisener and discovered that the movie thankfully comes from his lifelong obsession with dark n’ dirty genre movies and not his own damaged psyche.

Amongst other things, the director discussed his VHS-fueled youth, the experience of working with childhood hero Rutger Hauer, and how a two-minute fake trailer made for YouTube led to his feature-length directorial debut via Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse. Hit the jump for all the gory details.

Hobo With A Shotgun made a big splash at Sundance this year with Rutger Hauer running up and down the aisles with his own shotgun during the lively Q&As. It certainly has all the necessary ingredients for a cult film in the making, and should please anyone who doesn’t mind a little gooey, squishy stuff in their entertainment. There’s something in the movie to offend the entire family, yet it’s presented with such childish glee that it’s impossible to imagine anyone actually being upset by the copious amounts of bloody violence on display.

Like most first-time ...

Hobo with a Shotgun is an absolute blast if you like vicious, cartoony violence. The film will be available on demand starting tomorrow and Magnet has released a new red-band trailer to remind folks. If you've already watched the first red-band trailer, I think you've already seen enough. This new trailer has a lot of new footage and part of the fun in seeing the movie is not knowing how much crazier it's going to get.

However, I can understand wanting to see as much of this movie as soon as possible, so you can check out the trailer after the jump. Hobo with a Shotgun premieres tomorrow on VOD, iTunes, and Amazon.com. It shoots into theaters on May 6th. Click here to check out my review.

Here's the official synopsis for Hobo with a Shotgun:
A train pulls into its final station and a Hobo hops from a freight car. He has dreams of a fresh life in a new city, but finds himself trapped in an urban hell instead. A city where criminals rule the streets, landlords evict single mothers in the middle of the night, and where the city's crime boss, The Drake, reigns supreme with his sadistic, homeless-killing sons, Slick & Ivan. Through the chaos, the Hobo comes across a shop window displaying a second hand lawn mower and a shotgun, and decides it's time to cut the grass, make the city beautiful and start a new way of life. But ...

Hobo with a Shotgun was one of my favorite movies at Sundance and I'm jazzed that the rest of the country is going to have the chance to see it in a little less than a month. The film is scheduled to play at the SXSW Film Festival and then it will be available via VOD, iTunes, Xbox Marketplace, PlayStation Network, and Amazon.com on April 1st. In advance of the film's release, Mondo has released a grisly poster designed by Jeff Procter that lets people in your home know "Yes, I'm insane." (I've kept the most disgusting part of the poster off the main page simply because it's really gross and I don't want to look at it for the rest of the day).

Hit the jump to check out the poster, which will be available for sale at SXSW. Any remaining prints will be put up for sale on Mondo's official site at a later date. Also after the jump, you'll find details on a cool contest for fans who want to get their own grindhouse-style trailer on the DVD.

UPDATE: We just received a press release confirming Mondo's release of a Hobo with a Shotgun mobile game to be available "soon" in the Apple App Store. Hit the jump to check out the full press release, which includes info on the game's upcoming SXSW panel, as well as a trailer for the game.

The unrated trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun has gone online and it is awesomely work-unfriendly. Starring the great Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner) as (you guessed it) a homeless man wielding a shotgun, the film has an unsettling and gritty tone that screams B-movie excellence (although I doubt it will help squash the fears of hobophobes). Honestly, if the film was simply a 90-minute loop of the painfully bleak speech Hauer delivers in the trailer, I’d still pay to see it.

Hobo is the first feature film from director and co-writer Jason Eisener and is the second feature to be made of the faux trailers attached to Grindhouse (of which Robert Rodriguez’s Machete is the first). [Correction: A reader has astutely pointed out that the trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun was not attached to Grindhouse. Instead, it was the winner of a 2007 contest held at SXSW which asked filmmakers to submit faux trailers akin to the ones attached to Grindhouse.] To check out the gloriously creepy trailer for yourself, hit the jump .

Two new clips are out from Hobo with a Shotgun, Rutger Hauer’s upcoming work of genius in which he is a hobo determined to bring justice to his gang-riddled city using his trusty shotgun. In short, it’s exactly what it sounds like. The clips do nothing but make it look even more insane and incredible. The first is a rookie cop talking about how glad he is to be a policeman until a guy gets shot and awkwardly bleeds on him. The second is a cop screaming at everyone to shut the fuck up during a press conference and “go find that fucking hobo!” Yeah, there’s no way this could be any more awesome. In case you needed a reason to live, this is it:

For those of you that don’t know, Hobo with a Shotgun, was a brilliant faux trailer created by Nova Scotia director, Jason Eisener for Robert Rodriguez’s SXSW Grindhouse trailer contest in 2007. The feature version is currently filming.

Hobo with a Shotgun might just be the best movie title of all time, and this footage delivers just that and so much more, like flaming school buses, gangsters wielding machetes, a whole lot of blood and most importantly, Rutger Hauer shooting a lot of stuff. Hobo with a Shotgun is the second film being made based on a faux trailer from Grindhouse, with Machete set to be released this year. According to Quiet Earth, Jason Eisener's hobo opus follows Hauer's character, a homeless man who "goes about bringing justice to the city the best way he knows how-with a 20-gauge shotgun." Panhandling will never be the same.

Here's the synopsis:

A vigilante homeless man pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city's crime boss reigns. Seeing an urban landscape filled with armed robbers, corrupt cops, abused prostitutes and even a pedophile Santa, the Hobo goes about bringing justice to the city the best way he knows how - with a 20-gauge shotgun. Mayhem ensues when he tries to make things better for the future generation. Street justice will indeed prevail.

More good news Grindhouse fans! As we reported on Friday, the spin off based on one of the faux movie trailers in Grindhouse, Machete has a release date set for Labor Day weekend. Well, if the blood Machete spills won't be enough to hold you over for very long, you can expect another Grindhouse gem to follow shortly....Hobo with a Shotgun.

For those of you that don't know, Hobo with a Shotgun, was a brilliant faux trailer created by Nova Scotia director, Jason Eisener for Robert Rodriguez's SXSW Grindhouse trailer contest in 2007. Yesterday, Ain't It Cool News reported that the full length feature film starts shooting today and they also revealed Rutger Hauer has been cast as the Hobo! Hit the jump for the original trailer:

Casting Hauer was a solid move because he definitely has the ability to bring the perfect amount of rugged and filthy to the hobo who's had enough. Also, despite the casting switch (Dave Brunt was the original Hobo With a Shotgun), rumor has it that Brunt will still be appearing in the film as a cop. Here's the original trailer:
