Ricky Gervais Asked to Host the Golden Globes Again? [UPDATE: No.]

Ricky Gervais caused a minor uproar last month because his abrasive humor hosting the Golden Globes didn’t sit well with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and their attempts to ply celebrities with expensive booze and cheap awards.  It looked unlikely that Gervais would be invited back to host a third time even though he was the only thing that made that Globes watchable this year.  However, since the ratings went up, Gervais is now writing on his website [via Vulture],

“organisers asked me to consider a third year.  I don’t think I should.  I don’t know what I could do better.  I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure.  You know me.  Two seasons is enough.”

Hopefully, he’ll reconsider or at least do a Golden Globes Christmas Special. [Update: HFPA Head Phil Berk has responded in a statement [via THR], “There is no truth to this rumor. We have not asked him to come back. Nice try, Ricky.” I suppose Berk will try to get a host next year who embodies the HFPA’s mission statement of sucking up to celebrities.]

Ricky Gervais will be back as host of the Golden Globe Awards next year.  The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions invited Gervais back nine months before the show’s January 2011 telecast, which surprised Gervais, who said “I can’t believe they asked me back after  awful things I said.  Let’s see how far I can go this time,” according to Variety.  Ricky Gervais was the first host the show invited in 15 years, and as ratings went up, it’s a smart move to have him back.  He’s also hilarious, and awards shows need more hosts who bring beer onstage.  It tends to liven things up a bit.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards airs Sunday, January 16, 2011 on NBC.  The show is broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Ricky Gervais to Host the 67th Annual Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced Ricky Gervais will be hosting the 67th Annual Golden Globes on Sunday, January 17th, 2010. When asked why he agreed to host, Gervais said, “Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down.”

While the Golden Globes are a joke and the winners are determined by who spends the most to wine and dine the Hollywood Foreign Press, with Gervais hosting, this just became must see TV.
