It looks like Warner Bros. believes it has an awards contender on its hands with Ruben Fleischer's Gangster Squad. According to Box Office Mojo, the studio has set the 1940s crime thriller for October 19, 2012. The film is based on the true story of an Los Angeles Police Department task force whose mission was to bring down notorious mobster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). The impressive cast also features Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, Mireille Enos, Holt McCallany, Robert Patrick, and Giovanni Ribisi.

The other films that currently hold the 10/19/12 date are the romantic comedy The Big Wedding starring Robert De Niro and Katherine Heigl (hoo-boy) and an untitled project from Sopranos creator David Chase.

We have two quick pieces of casting news for you this afternoon. First up, Deadline reports that Lights Out star Holt McCallany will be playing the bodyguard and main enforcer of mobster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) in Gangster Squad. The film, directed by Ruben Fleischer ( is based on a series of articles in the LA Times by Will Beale about the 1940s special task force of Los Angeles cops who fought gangland activity. The impressive cast also features Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Michael Pena, and Giovanni Ribisi. McCallany also recently signed on to co-star in Walter Hill's upcoming action flick starring Sylvester Stallone.

Hit the jump for casting news for Scott Derrickson's low-budget horror flick.

THR reports that Ethan Hawke has signed on to star in the upcoming micro-budget horror flick from Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose). Details on the project are being kept under wraps although we previously reported that the story had a crime at the center.

Hawke is also set to star opposite Kristen Scott Thomas in the indie A Late Quartet and he's got a cameo in Len Wiseman's upcoming remake of Total Recall. He's also starring in the Fox series Exit Strategy but that show is currently undergoing retooling.

A trio of actors have joined Walter Hill’s untitled adaptation of the graphic novel Bullet to the Head. Variety reports that Christian Slater, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost) and Holt McCallany (TV’s Lights Out) will star alongside Sylvester Stallone in the action-thriller formerly referred to as Headshot. Stallone plays a New Orleans hit man who allies himself with a Gotham cop in order to take down the killers of their respective partners. The report confirms that Sung Kang will be playing the Gotham cop, a role that Thomas Jane was initially hired to play before he was subsequently fired from the project. If you missed our interview with Jane, he candidly explains what went down behind the scenes.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje is set as the main villain (putting those Jason Momoa rumors to rest), with Slater taking on the role of a local handler who acts as a middleman, while McCallany will portray Kang’s dirty cop partner. Production is set to begin soon.

The FX drama Lights Out follows Patrick “Lights” Leary (Holt McCallany), an aging former heavyweight boxing champion who is struggling to figure out who his life after retirement. Trying to support his wife and three daughters, his financial problems led him to reluctantly accept a job as a brutal debt collector, before eventually following his urge to return to the ring, even though one wrong hit could be deadly.

During a recent interview, show star Holt McCallany and executive producer/showrunner Warren Leight talked about the preparation involved in a role like this, playing a hero that falls in a definite gray area, how the character relationships will continue to develop throughout the remainder of the season, and where Season 2 might head, if they get the opportunity. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Holt, were you already a boxing fan, when this project came along?

HOLT McCALLANY: Yes, I love boxing, and boxing has always been my favorite sport. I was always into it and I boxed recreationally, all of my life. I always wanted to play a boxer because some of my favorite films, as a boy, were those great boxing movies, like Raging Bull, Rocky, The Set Up, Fat City and Hard Times. I just loved those films. So, when this opportunity came along, it was really like a dream come true. Roles like this don’t come very often.

Did you have to do a lot of work to prepare for this role?

McCALLANY: I had been in ...

In the latest FX drama Lights Out, Patrick “Lights” Leary is an aging former heavyweight boxing champion who struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring. When financial problems leave him with a very tough decision to make, he must battle the urge to return to boxing, or reluctantly accept a job as a brutal and intimidating debt collector.

During a recent interview to promote the new television series, show star Holt McCallany and executive producer/showrunner Warren Leight (In Treatment) talked about what it took to get this show off the ground, some of the noticeable changes they made from the original pilot that they shot, playing such a dream role and making this character very human. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

How much preparation did it take to get Lights Out off the ground?

WARREN LEIGHT: It was a very, very slow take off. The executive producer, Ross Fineman, had this idea, maybe four years ago, and he took it to Fox Studios, and they liked it. A script was commissioned and the script read well, so it was turned into a pilot, but the pilot didn’t really work. At that point, a lot of studios, and certainly the networks, said they were done. The pilot was not clicking and they didn’t want to put money down. John Landgraf, to his credit, and to my and Holt’s luck, realized how good this character was and how ...

With plenty of buzz and praise all over the place for David O. Russell's boxing drama The Fighter, there's no better time for FX to premiere their new boxing-centric drama series Lights Out. But while Mickey Ward had to struggle with opponents in the ring and his own invasive family while trying to break out of the ambition-killing town holding him back, Patrick “Lights” Leary (Holt McCallany) is a retired boxer and trying to do everything he can to stop from getting back in the ring. For a series focusing on a boxer, there's not a whole lot of boxing to be seen in every episode, but that doesn't mean this series doesn't pack some punches to deliver yet another great series on FX. For details on the first five rounds with Lights Out, keep reading.

After seeing the first five episodes of Lights Out, it's easy to see why a movie like The Fighter or Rocky can get a viewer all riled up and full of energy. You've got training montages, great success, and plenty of inspiration, even if there's a bit of adversity to be faced. But a lot of that is already in Leary's past. As a matter of fact, Leary lives a quiet life with his family. He's not crying poverty, the money from his fights bought him a nice house and a business partnership with his father (Stacy Keach) and brother has him ...

I've been raving about new FX shows for months now. Archer, Justified, Louie, Terriers: they're having a helluva 2010. While the January premiere leaves Lights Out just outside FX's calendar year of excellence, a rough cut of the pilot has been earning strong early reviews.

The boxing drama stars Holt McCallany as "an aging former heavyweight boxing champion who struggles to find his identity and support his wife and three daughters after retiring from the ring." You can check out the stylish new trailer for the show after the jump.

You want to know why Chris Evans is always going to be cool in my book? Because when I was on the set of The Losers in Puerto Rico last June, when it was incredibly hot and humid, Evans had the five online journalists in attendance come into his trailer to do his interview, as he had air conditioning and was willing to share it. Trust me, I've done a lot of on set interviews in some sketchy areas, and no other actor has ever opened his door like Chris Evans.

Anyway, during our extended interview with Evans, he talked about how he plays a computer expert named Jensen and if he's anything like him, did he debate playing another comic book based character, 80's movies, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, his career, Fantastic Four, and so much more. It's a great interview so take a look:

Like we always do...you can either read the transcript below or listen to the audio by clicking here. And if you haven't seen the trailer for The Losers, you might want to watch it first:

*Note* This interview took place on September 6, 2009. That's why we don't discuss The First Avenger: Captain America

-

Chris Evans: How's it going out there guys?

Pretty good.

Evans: Nicer in here than out there, right?

So tell us a little about your character in this.

Evans: I play Jensen. Jensen is a...he's the computer expert. He's the hacker in the bunch. Kind of the, you know, he cracks the jokes and I guess ...

If you're a fan of Jeffrey Dean Morgan in comic book movies and nervous that after playing the Edward Blake / The Comedian in Zack Snyder's Watchmen and Clay in director Sylvain White's The Losers he might stay away from another comic book role, you don't have to worry, as Morgan says, "I'm happy to be in this world. I'm loving it. I love this. I could do comic book movies forever."

He told me that - along with a few other online journalists - when I saw on the set of The Losers last June in Puerto Rico. While Morgan was in almost every scene that day and was also busy preparing for other scenes, he could not have been nicer on set as he came back over to us four different times as he kept getting pulled away for filming. Trust me, most actors would come over once...maybe twice. But no one comes back four times.

During our extended interview Morgan talked about everything: from who he plays in The Losers to how he saved a dog in Puerto Rico. Did I mention how awesome Morgan is? If you're a fan of his work or just curious about The Losers, you'll love the interview. Read or listen to it after the jump:

Back in September of 2009, I was invited - along with four other online journalists - to the set of director Sylvain White's The Losers when the movie was being shot in hot and humid Puerto Rico. While extreme heat and humidity can play havoc with a film shoot, when we got to speak with White, he was still excited and really enthusiastic about how things had been going. During our interview we talked about how he came to the project, why he wanted The Losers to be PG-13 and not R, how he tried to take elements of the graphic novel for the movie, how Peter Berg did the script, and a lot more. It's a really good and informative interview so read or listen to it after the jump:

Like we always do...you can either read the transcript below or listen to the audio by clicking here. And if you haven't seen the trailer for The Losers, you might want to watch it first:

NOTE - This interview was recorded on September 6, 2009. Statements made on Ronin and other projects have probably changes since this interview

Q: How did you get involved in this project? Were you a big fan of the comic before?

Sylvain White: I was developing another comic book property at Warner Brothers called 'Ronin' which is a Frank Miller project, and I heard about this project and then I educated myself on the comic. I went in and applied for the job basically. But I hadn't heard ...

Back in September of 2009, I was invited - along with four other online journalists - to the set of director Sylvain White's The Losers when the movie was being shot in hot and humid Puerto Rico. While I've covered many movies while working for Collider, this was the first time visiting a movie set could actually cost me a lot of money. The reason? The location was a secure Port that was guarded by Homeland Security. Each of us had to wear a special badge given to us by the government and we were warned if we lost it...we'd have to pay $10,000 dollars. Needless to say, I watched my badge like a hawk.

If you haven't heard of The Losers, the movie stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoë Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Holt McCallany, Óscar Jaenada, and Jason Patric and it's written by Peter Berg and James Vanderbilt. The film is based on the Vertigo comic series by Andy Diggle and Jock.

While I hate making comparisons, The Losers reminds me a lot of The A-Team, except rather than helping those who can't help themselves, The Losers are out to clear their names and get revenge on the one who betrayed them. Simply put...it's an action thriller that should be a lot of fun.

Hit the jump for what we did on set and you can also take a look at 6 brand new character posters of the cast:

Kevin Alejandro of the star-crossed cop drama Southland will soon be pulling doubles. Alejandro has just secured a regular role on HBO's hit show True Blood as Jesus, "a Latino orderly who is taking care of Ruby Jean Reynolds (Alfre Woodard) at her care facility and becomes involved with her son, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis)." Since TNT has not yet officially decided to produce a second season of Southland, Alejandro will be able to work on True Blood.

Hit the jump for new casting on the upcoming TV shows Retired at 35, Enlightened, and Lights Out.

Joining George Segal (Just Shoot Me) in Retired at 35, TV Land's first foray into scripted television, will be Johnathan McClain, Casey Wilson (previously of Saturday Night Live), Jessica Walter (Arrested Development) and Christine Ebersole. Retired will be about David, a young businessman (McClain) who leaves his successful life in New York behind for ostensibly stress-free living in his father Alan's (Segal) retirement home. Wilson will play David's sister, Walter has been cast as David's mother and Ebersole will appear as a possible love interest for Alan.
Luke Wilson is joining Laura Dern's HBO pilot Enlightened. The show follows Amy (Dern), "a self-destructive woman who after a meltdown has a spiritual awakening and becomes determined to live an enlightened life, creating havoc at home and work." Wilson will co-star as Amy's disorganized and drug-addled husband. Dern's mother, Diane Ladd, will also star as Amy's mother who takes her daughter in as a houseguest following her enlightenment.
