Ben Schwartz Talks HOUSE OF LIES, COFFEE TOWN, and Voice Work in TURBO and RANDY CUNNINGHAM

Already renewed for Season 2, the hit Showtime comedy series House of Lies closes out its first season with unexpected twists and surprises, as Marty Kaan’s (Don Cheadle) management consultant team at Galweather & Stearn fight the MetroCapital acquisition. Actor Ben Schwartz plays Clyde Oberholt, a major suck-up and voracious womanizer, who pulls his weight at work but uses his status to attract as many women as he can while he’s on his rise to the top.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Ben Schwartz talked about how excited he is to be doing a role that mixes drama with comedy and allows him the opportunity to do so many things, how he plants little things in throughout the season to enrich his character, how he’s looking forward to getting deeper into his backstory in Season 2, and what Clyde really thinks of the people he’s working with. He also talked about shooting the indie film Coffee Town with Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Steve Little (Eastbound and Down), doing the animated series Randy Cunningham: Ninth Grade Ninja for Disney XD and premiering in September, and voicing a character for the DreamWorks Animation feature Turbo, with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Actor Josh Lawson plays Doug Guggenheim, the brilliant, Harvard-educated member of the team, who is also a quintessential math geek with mad analytical skills, but no skills in the dating department.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Josh Lawson talked about how strong he felt the ending of the season was, how much the cast loves each other, what it’s like to work with the super-talented Don Cheadle, how much of his character was initially on the page versus what developed over the course of the season, his favorite moments on the show, that he’s rooting for Doug to meet a nice girl in Season 2, and how the fan support is inspiring them to push the boundaries even further. He also talked about the role he recently wrapped as Zach Galifianakis’ brother in The Campaign, also starring Will Ferrell, what it was like working with that cast and director Jay Roach, and why he also loves writing and directing his own projects. On Showtime’s outrageous comedy series House of Lies, Megalyn Echikunwoke plays sultry temptress April, the love interest of management consultant Marty Kaan (Don Cheadle). This season, she has also recurred on The CW’s reboot of 90210, as the stylish and conniving Holly. Next up, she is playing one third of a trio of girls set out to revolutionize college life at a grungy American University, in the smart and quirky comedy Damsels in Distress, from writer/director Whit Stillman (The Last Days of Disco). And, the busy actress has also signed on for the innovative new NBC pilot Beautiful People, taking place in a not-too-distant future where mechanical human beings exist to service the human population, until some of the mechanicals begin to awaken.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Megalyn Echikunwoke talked about how her role on House of Lies came about, how physically challenging it was to do a pole dance as her stripper character, how much she enjoyed working with Don Cheadle, and why she thinks it’s important to portray strong women. She also talked about what drew her Damsels in Distress and what it was like working with Whit Stillman, as well as the appeal of the futuristic sci-fi drama Beautiful People, and how she would love the opportunity to do a musical. Showtime Renews SHAMELESS, HOUSE OF LIES and CALIFORNICATION

While HBO made some big cuts from their original programming towards the end of last year, Showtime is keeping shows around as EW has learned that the cable network has given an additional season order to Shameless, House of Lies and Californication. Shameless gets a third season after its stellar ensemble cast, including William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, has come through with a great second season while House of Lies, with Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, has gotten stellar ratings to earn a second season while its first season is still in progress. Finally Californication is still going strong to nab a sixth season, but I don’t know if it will last beyond that. Either way, it shows that Showtime has faith in their shows and should please fans of all three series.

On the new Showtime comedy series House of Lies, actress Kristen Bell plays Jeannie Van Der Hooven, a talented and highly ambitious member of Marty Kaan’s (Don Cheadle) team of management consultants. Crafty, flirtatious and a bit mysterious, Jeannie does everything she can to keep her personal life personal, but she’s not above getting down and dirty with a different guy in every city she visits.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Collider got the opportunity to sit down with Kristen Bell for this exclusive interview to talk about how the head of the network approached her directly about doing the role, the appeal of doing more provocative storylines, how much fun she’s having working with the extremely talented Don Cheadle (who is also an executive producer on the series), how she never would have imagined that she would have her toes sucked on TV, and that she craves diversity in her acting roles, but is also spontaneous when it comes to choosing projects. As part of the network’s TCA Press Tour presentation, President of Entertainment at Showtime, David Nevins, took some time to talk about their popular, long-running drama series Dexter, what he thought of the creative choices for this season, and the relationship between Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and his adopted sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter). Nevins also talked about the status of future seasons of Nurse Jackie and The Borgias, his hopes for their latest comedy, House of Lies, and where this season’s most critically acclaimed new drama, Homeland, will be headed in Season 2. A classic marketing strategy over at Showtime is to stream premiere episodes a week or two before the airdate.  The network has done it for new seasons of Dexter and Weeds, as well as new series Shameless and Homeland.  It must be working, because Showtime has just posted the pilot for the upcoming comedy House of Lies for all to see.  I really like the cast: Don Cheadle, Kristin Bell, Ben Schwartz, and Josh Lawson star as a management consulting team.  Hit the jump to watch Episode 1, “Gods of Dangerous Financial,” before House of Lies premieres on January 8.

Showtime’s David Nevins Talks DEXTER, SHAMELESS, LAUGHING STOCK, HOUSE OF LIES, WEEDS and More

As part of the Showtime portion of the TCA Press Tour, President of Entertainment David Nevins took some time to talk about a growth in subscribers of the network, the direction of returning series, and where he sees series development going in the future. Here are the most interesting points:

• Showtime has added over 2 million subscribers, taking their total accounts to 20.5 million.
• Dexter returns for its sixth season on October 2^nd, as the lead-in to the new drama series. Homeland, about a CIA officer (Claire Danes) who becomes convinced that a recently rescued American POW (Damian Lewis) may be connected to an Al Qaeda plot to be carried out on U.S. soil.
• Shameless, The Borgias and Episodes are all returning for a Season 2, with The Borgias being a massive production in its size and scope.
• The subversively funny comedy House of Lies, starring Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, about cutthroat members of a top-tier management consultant firm, will premiere in early 2012.
• Laughing Stock (premiering in early 2012), from producers Steve Carell and David Steinberg, will showcase in-depth, one-on-one interviews with the greatest comic minds of the past four decades, including Jerry Seinfeld, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, Larry David, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Judd Apatow, Ellen DeGeneres and Steve Carell, himself.
• They’re working on the script for the adaptation of the comic book 100 Bullets (written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Eduardo Risso) and, even though they’re not ready to commit to it yet, it is an important project for the network.
• He is optimistic about the future of Weeds, but United States of Tara was canceled because they felt the show had accomplished what it set out to accomplish.

TV Casting Call: Jason Sudeikis Heads EASTBOUND & BOUND, Gwendoline Christie Joins GAME OF THRONES, Nick Stahl for HOUSE OF LIES

Here’s a trio of cable TV casting coming at you right now. First up, as if HBO’s outrageous comedy series Eastbound & Down needed to be anymore hilarious, Variety reports Saturday Night Live cast member and Going the Distance star Jason Sudeikis is getting a recurring role on the show. The comedian will play Shane, one of Kenny Powers’ (Danny McBride) new friends, likely back in Shelby, South Carolina since *SPOILER ALERT* he returned back home in the second season finale. I’m always happy to see Sudeikis show up in any comedy, so he’s definitely a welcome addition to the cast.  For details on the new cast members for Game of Thrones and House of Lies, hit the jump

Don Cheadle Talks IRON MAN 3, THE AVENGERS, HOUSE OF LIES, and His Miles Davis Biopic

In his new film, The Guard, Don Cheadle plays humorless FBI agent Wendell Everett in this comedic fish-out-of-water tale of murder, blackmail, drug trafficking and rural police corruption written and directed by John Michael McDonagh.  We sat down with Cheadle at a roundtable interview today to talk about The Guard and while we were at it we also asked him about his upcoming projects like Iron Man 3, Showtime’s House of Lies, his Miles Davis project, and The Avengers.

The big news for Marvel fans is that Cheadle says Iron Man 3 will probably shoot in February and “there’s talk of a War Machine spinoff.”  With Iron Man 3 hitting theaters May 3, 2013, a February start date makes a lot of sense.  In addition, Cheadle says that even though his contract had an option to appear in The Avengers, Marvel hasn’t “exercised that option yet.”  With filming underway in New Mexico, it’s looking like Tony Stark won’t have his pal Rhodey around.  Hit the jump for what he said and look for the full interview very soon.

Kristen Bell Moves into Showtime’s HOUSE OF LIES with Don Cheadle

Last December we heard that Don Cheadle signed on to star in their dark comedy series House of Lies from Matthew Carnahan, creator and writer of the FX series Dirt. Based on Martin Kihn’s book of the same name, the half-hour comedy follows Marty (Cheadle), a highly successful, cutthroat consultant who is never above using any means (or anyone) necessary to get his clients the information they want. Now Showtime has announced that Kristen Bell, who first made waves on TV as Veronica Mars, has landed the role of Jeannie Van Der Hooven, a razor-sharp, Ivy-League graduate who works at Marty’s firm. Stephen Hopkins is directing the pilot with production beginning this month, so we’ll be looking forward to checking the show out later this year.

TV News: Don Cheadle Building HOUSE OF LIES, Virginia Madsen Will Witness THE EVENT and Mekhi Phifer Heads to TORCHWOOD

After just hearing that Ethan Hawke would lead a new series on Fox, another talented actor is heading to TV as well. Showtime announced Don Cheadle has signed on to star in their dark comedy series House of Lies from Matthew Carnahan, creator and writer of the FX series Dirt. Based on Martin Kihn’s book of the same name, the half-hour comedy follows Marty (Cheadle), a highly successful, cutthroat consultant who is never above using any means (or anyone) necessary to get his clients the information they want. The series heads into production next February with Stephen Hopkins (Californication) directing and Jessica Borsicsky (FlashForward) executive producing. Cheadle has always been a welcome addition to any project, so I’ll definitely be checking this series out whenever it hits cable.
