I like to see the guild awards, because the specificity allows for nominees that you won’t see on more general lists. The Art Directors Guild is especially interesting because they separate the films into three categories: period, fantasy, and contemporary. The 15 nominees highlight everything from Oscar favorites Hugo and The Artist, to crowd-pleasers Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Captain America, to poorly received films like Cowboys & Aliens and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. There’s a similar contrast in the TV nominees between the classy HBO programs you’d expect (Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, and Mildred Pierce) and the critical punching bags American Horror Story and The Playboy Club. The full list of nominees is after the break.

It’s amazing that a story about meeting the mother of one man’s children has lasted for seven seasons and the kids hearing the story haven’t gotten up to leave the room, but How I Met Your Mother is still going strong. And this season, the writers are throwing back to a character referenced only in the comedy series’ first season and quite a big name has landed the role. Vulture has learned that Katie Holmes will be the infamous Slutty Pumpkin. Fans of the series should remember Halloween harlequin as a potential love interest Ted (Josh Radnor) once met at a Halloween party, but lost touch with eventually. This will be Holmes’ first TV appearance since a guest role on Eli Stone in 2008 and creator Craig Thomas says, “Katie is a lovely and talented actress, which is why we’ve saved for her perhaps the most classily named character in our show’s history.” Should be a fun role for Holmes and an interesting time for Ted, but when the hell is the mother of his children going to show up?

At today’s D23 (essentially Disney’s Comic-Con), I got to talk with Jason Segel backstage before his presentation for The Muppets. As most of you know, all of us at Collider are beyond excited to see Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the Muppets return to theaters later this year.
During the interview, Segel talked about the footage they were going to show, the recent Muppets test screening, what it was like to meet Kermit for the first time, getting to recreate the Muppet Theater, and he also talked about How I Met Your Mother and what director Nicholas Stoller’s (Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) Five-Year Engagement is about (which hits theaters April 27, 2012). Hit the jump to watch.

Jason Segel is such a charming, funny and genuinely nice guy that it’s easy to like him, as a person and as an actor. The fact that he has the talent to back all that up makes it impossible not to be a fan. In the new raunchy comedy Bad Teacher, starring Cameron Diaz as the inappropriately foul-mouthed and ruthless middle school teacher Elizabeth Halsey, Segel plays happy-go-lucky gym teacher Russell Gettis. Unfazed by rejection, he keeps flirting with and pursuing Elizabeth, even though she has told him that it’s never going to happen because he’s just not rich enough for her.
At the film’s press day, Jason Segel spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview, in which he talked about working non-stop while juggling films with his television series How I Met Your Mother, his relationship with Rush since shooting I Love You, Man, how much fun he had working opposite Cameron Diaz for Bad Teacher, and the tremendous respect he has for Justin Timberlake. He also talked about what attracted him to Jeff Who Lives at Home (he’s seen the film and says it’s fantastic), The Muppets being a dream project, how great the Freaks & Geeks / Undeclared reunion was at PaleyFest earlier this year, how much he’s been enjoying shooting The Five-Year Engagement with Nic Stoller, and that he’d really like to eat a Reuben, once he’s done playing a leading man for that film. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Earlier this month, we listed the nominees for the first Critics’ Choice Television Awards from the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. Now the awards have been handed out and we have the full list of winners which include Modern Family rightfully winning “Best Comedy Series” and Mad Men taking home “Best Drama Series” along with star Jon Hamm winning “Best Actor in a Drama Series.” The always fantastic Neil Patrick Harris took home the award for “Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” for his consistently hilarious work on How I Met Your Mother, while the award for “Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series” ended up in a tie. See which actresses are sharing the award, as well as the rest of the winners, after the jump.

Following The Big Bang Theory‘s move to Thursdays and the uncertain future of Two and a Half Men, the dominance of CBS’ Monday comedy block is in jeopardy. The Live Feed reports the network has locked in reliable performer How I Met Your Mother, renewing the sitcom for two more seasons. How I Met Your Mother is currently in the middle of its sixth season; the renewal promises a season eight that would keep the show on the air through the end of 2013.
The five stars — Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Jason Segel, Allison Hanygan, Neil Patrick Harris — are each contracted through season eight. With his budding movie career, Segel has implied intent to leave at the end of his contract. Radnor reiterated in a recent interview: “Right now, I think everyone is on the same page, including the writers, to finish out the next two seasons, after this.” The high-concept hook (“Who is the mother?”) always directed HIMYM to the end of its story, a strategy which is not best served by the indefinite timeline of an American TV series. I’ll be sad to see it go, but I am excited by the prospect that creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays can plan the show around this end date.

Happythankyoumoreplease, written, directed by and starring How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor, is a new comedy about a group of 20-somethings who are learning to navigate life and love in New York. On his way to a meeting with a publisher, aspiring novelist Sam Wexler (Radnor) meets Rasheen (Michael Algieri), a young boy separated from his family on the subway. When he realizes that Rasheen has already been in several previous foster homes before this one, he lets the boy stay with him for a few days. During that time, the boy meets Sam’s friends, including Annie (Malin Akerman), who has the auto-immune disorder alopecia, Mary-Catherine (Zoe Kazan) and Charlie (Pablo Schreiber), whose possible move to Los Angeles threatens their relationship, and Mississippi (Kate Mara), a waitress who also happens to be an aspiring singer that catches Sam’s eye, but also tests his fear of commitment when she wants him to open up to her.
At the film’s press day, Josh Radnor did this exclusive interview with Collider and talked about how the film came about for him, how excited he is for audiences to finally get to see it, what he learned from the experience of writing and directing that will help him in the future, and the scenes he cut that he plans to put on the DVD/Blu-ray. He also talked about being happy with where things are at with Season 6 of the hit comedy series How I Met Your Mother and how far he sees the show continuing. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

For a show that was at one point “on the bubble” as to whether or not it would get renewed, it’s pretty remarkable how large the fanbase for How I Met Your Mother has grown over the last few years. Timed with the sixth season’s premiere on television, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has released the complete fifth season on a three-disc DVD set with a few noteworthy bonus features. Although not every episode of season five reached the high standards set by the best of seasons past, it was still another impressive run of episodes backed by the series’ signature writing and solid performances. Hit the jump for my full review.

I liked it well enough, but the fifth season of How I Met Your Mother faced accusations of a decline in quality in some critical circles. Creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, refreshingly, kept their fingers out of their ears. They acknowledged the show is better served when they don’t hit the reset button at the close of each segment, and keep their eyes to the end of the series.
Nice thought, but the step between the promise and the execution is a difficult one. My review of “Big Days,” the first episode of season six, after the jump.

Perhaps the longest story anyone has ever told about meeting their significant other continues this year with the sixth season of How I Met Your Mother. The show is about as far as I’ll delve into the laugh track sitcom stylings of network television (simply because Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Siegel are just so damn great on it), but now it looks like the show may finally be moving towards the meat of the story that the series’ title promises. EW has learned that Jennifer Morrison (House M.D.) will be joining this coming season of the show for an extended story arc and it’s quite the big deal.
Executive producer Craig Thomas says her character is ““the biggest female character we’ve maybe ever added to the show in Ted’s life.” He goes on to say, “This is a big arc—a huge arc. It’s going to be a little less date-of-the-week for Ted, which season 5 was. This is going to be a big saga for Ted. [It's] going to be a big over-arching story that will take Ted on a journey that we’re really excited about.” So who exactly will Morison be playing? She’s a rabble-rousing activist who’s hell-bent on saving the Arcadian, an old New York hotel that’s scheduled to be torn down to make way for the Goliath National Bank tower—which Ted just so happens to be designing. That’s certainly a love story worth telling the kids about. We’ll see what happens when the new season kicks off on September 20th.

CBS has announced their premiere dates for Fall 2010, and virtually everything drops during the week of September 20-26. I’ve been a fan of Jason Segel’s work for a long time. While some of you still haven’t seen Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared, if you haven’t, you’re missing out on great television and some fantastic work by Segel. But even though both of those shows died well before their time, Segel’s landed on his feet, as he’s one of the stars of the very popular CBS show How I Met Your Mother, and he’s even been the leading man in a big Hollywood movie – Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Anyway, with the 3D CGI movie Despicable Me opening tomorrow, I was able to talk with Segel as a reporter for our partners at Omelete. During the almost 6 minute interview, we talked about Brazil, the World Cup, what got him involved in Despicable Me, his next film Jeff Who Lives at Home (directed by The Duplass Brothers), and he gave me updates on The Muppet Movie and Nicholas Stoller’s Five-Year Engagement - which he said is about the fluidity of relationships in your 20′s. He also said he hopes to shoot this next spring as his hiatus movie. It’s a great interview, so hit the jump to check it out:

Known for writing, producing or starring in such memorable recent comedies as Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Knocked Up, along with his successful television series How I Met Your Mother, Jason Segel is on a roll in Hollywood. Making his animated debut in Despicable Me, the actor voices the villainous Vector, super arch-nemesis to Gru (voiced by Steve Carell).
During a press conference to promote the film, Jason Segel talked about finding the right voice for Vector, his tips for being funny and how he’s more proud of this film than anything he’s ever done. He also gave an update on how his Muppets movie is coming along, and hinted at what fans can expect from the upcoming season of How I Met Your Mother. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

The month of May brings many a season finale to our airwaves; over the last week or so, I have been recapping the finales a few of our favorite shows here at Collider, and using that as a jumping off point to discuss the direction of the season and the show as a whole. This Monday night, we got the 2-hour finale of NBC’s Chuck, as well as the season sendoffs for the CBS comedies How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory.
Hit the jump for a spoiler-filled dissection of the finale and overall season arc of each show.

One of the many films that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film festival was writer/director Josh Radnor’s happythankyoumoreplease. While many might have thought Radnor only got into Sundance due to his CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, his film won the Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance, proving he belonged in the Festival.
Starring Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Kate Mara (Shooter), Tony Hale (Arrested Development , Chuck) and Josh Radnor, happythankyoumoreplease is about six New Yorkers juggling love, and friendship. Even though the story is nothing new in the world of movies, I really enjoyed his debut film. Also, while many Sundance movies were tough to watch, happythankyoumoreplease is a really sweet romcom that’s sure to please audiences looking for an uplifting movie about love. While the movie doesn’t yet have distribution , I’m sure someone will purchase the film soon.
To help promote the film, I got to talk with Malin Akerman and Josh Radnor. You can watch the interview after the jump:
