Finally, the first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been released. Peter Jackson returns to direct the adventure of young Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) who sets out on an adventure with a company of dwarves. This trailer really is like a warm embrace from an old friend. While most trailers this far out from release show very little in the way of footage, Jackson shows off a great deal. Freeman looks excellent as Bilbo, the dwarves are fantastic (they sing!), and the tag brought a big smile to my face. While a year is a very long time to wait, this snippet is a swell look into the wonder to come.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, and Stephen FryThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012.

New Trailer for HAPPY FEET TWO

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 6th, 2011 at 2:37 pm

A new trailer has gone online for George Miller’s Happy Feet Two. I know I’m not the target audience for these movies but I find penguins adorable.  Theoretically, I should be willing to give the Happy Feet flicks the benefit of the doubt on that alone.  But the animators for the Happy Feet films made a serious error when they decided to give the penguins human eyes.  The characters all exist in a weird middle ground between trying to have animated expressions and still remain realistic-looking.  The movies are made worse by the having penguins squeak out hip-hop songs. But none of that matters because the movie will probably make hundreds of millions of dollars.  Hooray.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, which doesn’t tell you what the movie is about (Mumble and his son have to find an escape route when the penguin population is covered in ice). The film features the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Alecia Moore (P!nk), Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Sofia Vergara, Hugo Weaving, Richard Carter, Common, Magda Szubanski, and Anthony LaPagila.  Happy Feet Two opens in 3D on November 18th.

Set Photos from CLOUD ATLAS Featuring Halle Berry and Hugo Weaving

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: September 15th, 2011 at 8:16 pm

In a shocking move, tonight we’re bringing you set photos from a film that is not a comic-book and/or superhero movie (twist!). Instead, we’ve got some images from the ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas. Directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Twyker, the film features a fairly impressive ensemble of actors that will be playing multiple characters, switching both gender and race. Today’s images feature Halle Berry and Hugo Weaving dressed in 70’s garb, in a scene that looks to be directed by Twyker.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The independently financed film also stars Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent, and Jim Sturgess. Cloud Atlas is currently filming in Glasgow, Scotland.

New Trailer for ORANGES AND SUNSHINE Starring Emily Watson and Hugo Weaving

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: September 15th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

A new trailer for the drama Oranges and Sunshine has been released. The film is one of those “too disturbing to be true” tales that tells the real-life story of one social worker’s quest to uncover a hidden scandal on a massive scale, as she discovers that forced migration of children from the United Kingdom to Australia had occurred as recently as the 1950’s and 60’s. The trailer is quite intriguing, and I was wholeheartedly involved until the heavy-handed narration took over, making it seem more like a Lifetime or direct-to-DVD movie than an actual feature. Nevertheless, the story is crazy and I’m interested enough to check it out.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving, and David Wenham. Oranges and Sunshine opens in select theaters October 21st.

Wachowskis and Tykwer to Shoot CLOUD ATLAS Next Month but with a Reduced Budget

The Wachowski Siblings and Tom Tykwer’s audacious adaptation of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas has been long in development but it will finally go before cameras in mid-to-late September.  Mitchell’s novel spans six different lifetimes across six different eras.  The film stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Ben Whishaw, and Jim Broadbent.  If you’re wondering about the ambition of the project, Weaving said back in May that he was playing six different characters, which sounds like each actor won’t be playing just one character in one time period.

However, the project will also be working with less money.  Producer Stefan Ardnt tells THR that the budget for Cloud will be “definitely lower” than then rumored $100 – $120 million, which isn’t too surprising.  Speed Racer was a flop and Tykwer has never worked with $100+ budget.  However, the production has gotten significant tax breaks by shooting about 80% of the movie in Babelsberg, Berlin and the surrounding area.  The film is also getting made due to a unique financing arrangement from Berlin bank IFB and German regional film funding body, the Medienboard.  Hit the jump for more details on Cloud Atlas.

With director Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger set to hit theaters next week, Paramount has released the EPK (electronic press kit) which includes 4 movie clips, a  Meet Captain America Featurette, and almost 9 minutes of behind the scenes footage from when they were making the movie (B-Roll).  If you’re trying to stay spoiler free, I’d advise you to avoid watching these videos.  But if you want to see as much footage as possible, hit the jump.  The behind the scenes footage is really cool.  Especially if you want to see what it was like on set.

Officially shifting into “we’re only a week away from releasing a summer blockbuster” mode, Marvel has released two new clips from Captain America: The First Avenger. The first showcases a nifty little fight sequence where Cap gets the chance to showcase his new found strength while the second provides an elongated look at a scene played pretty heavily throughout the film’s promotional materials. As I prepare to head to Comic-Con next week, I’m hoping the rumors of the pic screening early in San Diego turn out to be true.

Check out the clips after the jump. Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Stanley Tucci, Natalie Dormer, Sebastian Stan, and Dominic Cooper, director Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters on July 22nd. With the release of Captain America: The First Avenger just over a week away, we’re doing our best to consolidate some recent happenings regarding the pic into one place. While a number of the images have been released previously, you’ll also find plenty of new shots included in the batch. The international poster for Captain America: The First Avenger has gone online.  It’s not a bad poster.  You’ve got the shield, you’ve got the Howling Commandos, and you’ve got a giant Red Skull in the background and if the characters in the foreground simply turned around, they’d have a real shot at winning the war.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  Captain America: The First Avenger opens July 22nd.

The final theatrical trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger has landed online. While there is a lot to like about the cut, my favorite aspect is that it does a really nice job of setting up pre-super soldier Steve Rogers as someone who simply wants it more than other, more physically gifted, soldiers. I’m also looking forward to seeing the dynamic between Tommy Lee Jones’ Colonel Chester Phillips and Rogers play out in the pic as the “He’s still skinny” line you’ll hear in the trailer actually made me laugh out loud. Hit the jump to watch the trailer and, if you haven’t already, make sure you check out the fantastic new poster that was released earlier today.

Directed by Joe Johnston, the film stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, and Hugo Weaving. Captain America: The First Avenger opens in 3D on July 22, 2011.

You know what we haven’t had in a while?  Some Captain America: The First Avenger advertising!  The movie is only seven weeks away and if you’re not already excited for it you will never be excited for it.  Ever. Marvel has now released three character posters for the film and they’re pretty bland but hey, it’s Captain America (Chris Evans), Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).  Be excited.

Peter Jackson Starts Answering Fan Questions for THE HOBBIT; “Reveals” the White Council

Way back in 2000 and 2001, Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema were able to put together video blogs to update fans on the production for The Lord of the Rings.  It’s a little mind-blowing to think how far technology has come in just ten years, but Jackson is still expertly using the Internet to keep in touch with fans.  We’ve already got one video blog about the start of production on The Hobbit and Jackson has been using his Facebook page to give folks news on casting and other updates.  He has now launched in on answering twenty questions from fans and he posted the first two Q&As today.  The first official answer has Jackson talking about how the White Council and Dol Guldur will figure into the movie.

Hit the jump for Jackson’s full response as well as a “first look” (please, please note the quotation marks) at the White Council.  The Hobbit is being shot in 3D and will be broken into two parts with part one set for December 2012 and part two set for December 2013.

Hugo Weaving Says He’s Playing Six Different Characters in CLOUD ATLAS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 30th, 2011 at 8:52 am

Speaking to folks who have read David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, there seems to be a shared agreement that they don’t know how it can be adapted into a movie.  The novel spans across different eras and different lifetimes: “A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilization”.  The film stars Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, and Jim Broadbent, and all of the actors are playing multiple roles with Weaving revealing he gets to play six different characters.  Weaving explained to the Herald Sun [via The Playlist]:

“That’s a project that’s really exciting because all the actors will be playing more than one role I actually have six characters in the same film and they are all different people in six different stories.”

The Wachowski Siblings will be co-directing with Tom Tykwer and the ambition of the project makes this a movie to keep on your radar.  Filming is set to begin in September for a likely 2013 release.  Hit the jump for the synopsis of the novel.

Confirmed: Orlando Bloom Will Reprise His Role as Legolas for THE HOBBIT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 27th, 2011 at 10:23 am

Back in December, we reported that Orlando Bloom might reprise his role as Elven sharpshooter Legolas for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.  Today on his official Facebook page, Jackson confirmed that he had Legolas bow:

Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.

Bloom is the latest Lord of the Rings cast member to join The Hobbit.  While Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), and Gollum (Andy Serkis) actually appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, Jackson has apparently made room for Legolas, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), old Bilbo (Ian Holm), and Frodo (Elijah Wood).  Hit the jump for the synopsis of the novel.  The two-part 3D film is set for December 2012 and December 2013.
