I LOVE YOU, PHILLIP MORRIS Blu-Ray Review

John Requa and Glenn Ficarra’s I Love You, Phillip Morris arrived last year, but if you weren’t paying very close attention to the movie listings at your local arthouse theater, you might have missed it.  The film stars Jim Carrey as an exceptionally gay con-man who will go to any lengths to keep himself happy, and– according to rumor– the film’s sometimes-graphic gay sex scenes scared Hollywood away from opening the film like any other Jim Carrey-led comedy.  So, is it really that graphic?  Or were all those rumors much ado about nothing?  And does any of it really matter when the film’s this funny?  Read on for our full I Love You, Phillip Morris review.

WGA Announces Screenplay Nominations; Nods for BLACK SWAN, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and INCEPTION

The Writers Guild of America has announced their nominations for the best screenplays of 2010.  Most of the usual suspects scored noms, including The Social Network and Black Swan. A couple of nice surprise nominations for Please Give and I Love You Philip Morris shake up what’s mostly a list of more of the same. Oscar favorite The Kings Speech failed to meet eligibility requirements to be considered, and was therefore disqualified (as were a number of other high-profile scripts).  Usually a reliable predictor for Oscar gold, the winner of the WGA award has gone on to win the Oscar in the same category 11 of the last 16 years.

Don’t let the lack of a Kings Speech nom fool you, as that film and The Social Network have been racking up awards in the original and adapted screenplay categories respectively over the past month. Weekend Box Office – TANGLED Takes in $21.5 Million; HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – PART 1 Falls to Second

The kids are back in school, the leftovers are congealing in the fridge and you’ve already run through all the releases at your local multiplex. Such is life on the weekend after the Thanksgiving Holiday.  The upshot is that there isn’t much to talk about in terms of box office.  We’ve got holdovers as far as the eye can see – and they’re not holding very well at that.  In fact, overall box office is down 13% this weekend from 2009 levels when The Blind Side claimed first place.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Review

“Be yourself,” is a quaint piece of advice that’s helpful as long as your life is uncomplicated and you’re a genuinely good person who is bound to be accepted by everyone you meet.  Or you could be Stephen Russell, a gay con man who was enjoyed living a lie whether he was in the closet or out of it.  I Love You Phillip Morris has the potential to really delve into some fulfilling satire of American attitudes towards homosexual.  However, the film is more interested in examining Russell as a larger-than-life individual and using broad dark comedy to make its mark.  The film delivers laughs, but it never aspires to leave much of a lasting impression.

The delightfully foul-mouthed red-band trailer for I Love You Phillip Morris has gone online.  The film stars Jim Carrey as real-life con-man Steven Russell who comes out of the closet only to discover that “being gay is really expensive”.  While in prison, he falls in love with Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor) and goes to great lengths to continue their relationship.  The film has received positive notices ever since it first played at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.  After numerous delays, it’s finally getting released in the U.S. and I can’t wait to see it.

New Posters for I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – PART 1, and DRIVE ANGRY

We have some new posters for you this morning.  First up, we have a new poster for the gay romantic comedy I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor.  After suffering numerous delays, the film is finally set for December 3rd and I can’t wait to see it.

There are also two more posters for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.  One poster focuses on Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange (played by Helena Bonham Carter) and another has Draco Malfoy (played by Tom Felton) cloaked in shadow.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is due out November 19th.

Finally, there’s the first poster for the upcoming action flick Drive Angry starring Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard.  What’s interesting about this poster is that it says “Shot in 3D”.  I don’t know if audiences know that means it’s better than a post-conversion.  I’m curious to see if other films that were shot in 3D will add that note to their advertising or if Drive Angry is just using it because the word “shot” works nicely with the bullet-holes.  Hit the jump to check out all the posters.

Matt’s 15 Most Anticipated Films for the Rest of 2010

The 2010 summer movie season kind of sucked.  There were some good wide-release movies like Splice and Predators.  But there were also films like Iron Man 2 and Toy Story 3, which were unable to meet the (perhaps unfairly) high expectations put upon them.  The only major films that cleared the high bar were Inception and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

But I think the rest of the year has the potential to blow minds.  There’s a wonderful variety of both light and serious fare.  I’ve boiled down the number of films I’m excited to see over the next four months down to 15 flicks.  Hit the jump to find out what’s on my radar.  Also, be sure to sound off in the comments section about what films you’re jazzed to see as 2010 begins to wind down.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Finally Getting Released on December 3rd

I Love You Phillip Morris is finally getting an American release. The film, written and directed by Bad Santa screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, has faced a tortuous road to multiplexes. After premiering at Sundance 2009 and accumulating a lot of buzz the film was to be distributed by Consolidated Pictures Group way back on February 12th. But that did not happen. The alternate release dates, March 26th, April 30th, and July 30th all came and went and left audiences waiting.  The the film was delayed indefinitely.

Now, Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, which produced the film, has made a deal with Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment to have the film distributed on December 3^rd with full advertising to promote the release. The movie, inspired by a true story, stars Jim Carrey as Steven Russell, a con-man who meets and falls in love with his prison cellmate, Phillip Morris, played by Ewan McGregor. After Morris’ release, Russell repeatedly escapes prison in order to see him again. Already released internationally (and garnering a 81% “Fresh” rating on RottenTomatoes in the process), the film is sure to be controversial, albeit critically lauded, upon its release in America.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer and see what the love is all about.

Exclusive: Producer Andrew Lazar Video Interview JONAH HEX; Plus Updates on AKIRA, ONE FINGER SALUTE, GET SMART 2, More

With Jonah Hex getting released tomorrow, I was able to sit down with producer Andrew Lazar (Get Smart, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) for an extended interview last weekend.  During our wide ranging conversation we talked about the challenges of getting Jonah Hex made, how they got the great cast together, the mixing of different genres in Hex, what will be on the DVD/Blu-ray (over 10 minutes of deleted scenes), and a lot more.

But after talking about Jonah Hex for awhile, we started talking about his other projects like I Love You Phillip Morris, Akira, Get Smart 2, Untitled Joe Namath Project, Pre-Astronauts (now called One Finger Salute), what are general meetings, and a lot more.  Some of the interesting things I learned were:

• I Love You Phillip Morris should have a happy ending as the film will hopefully be released this fall.
• Akira is still moving forward. They just hired a new writer and they’re conceptualizing right now.  He also says WB management loves the property and the studio is very enthusiastic about the project.  Confirms the first movie would be volumes 1-3 and a second movie would be 4-6
• Pre-Astronauts is now called One Finger Salute.  Calls it The Right Stuff before The Right Stuff. Says it’s about a group of Air Force scientists and pilots that believe man can go to space and survive. Also says they did a table read last year with Tom Cruise, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, and Elizabeth Banks!  Peter Segal is scheduled to direct.
• Regarding Get Smart 2, he said Steve Carell wrote the script for the sequel!
• And regarding his Untitled Joe Namath Project talk, he says he’s meeting with James Mangold once he is done with his Knight and Day stuff.  Not sure if it’s to write and/or direct.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Delayed AGAIN, This Time by California District Court Judge

Oh, for fuck’s sake.  I Love You Phillip Morris has been shelved once again.  The gay romantic comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor opened to positive review at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.  It was originally slated to hit theaters on March 26th, then it was bumped to April 30th, and then it got kicked off the schedule altogether.  Thankfully, the film was then restored to the release calendar and set for July 30th.

Now, Reuters reports that California District Court Judge Dale Fischer has halted the release of the film due to a dispute between producer EuropaCorp and U.S. distributor Consolidated Pictures Group.  As a result, the film won’t make its July 30th date, its website has disappeared, and Consolidated has targeted October for the film’s release.  Of course, this assumes that the dispute will move to Independent Film and Television Alliance arbitration “hopefully within the next two months.”

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Gets New Release Date of July 30th with Expanded Release on August 6th

Last week, we reported that the gay romantic comedy I Love You Phillip Morris had been pushed back indefinitely.  I was slightly unhappy upon hearing this news.  Variety now reports that the film will hit theaters in a limited release on July 30th and begin expanding on August 6th.  I find this…acceptable.

The film, which stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival to positive critical reception.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis.

Sorry Philip Morris, somebody really doesn’t love you. I Love You Phillip Morris, a dark comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, which had its premiere way back at Sundance 2009 was scheduled to be released this month. Now, the LA Times is reporting that Consolidated Pictures Group has delayed it indefinitely.

Based on a true story, Carrey stars as con artist who falls in love with his prison cellmate, Phillip Morris, played by McGregor. It’s written and directed by Bad Santa screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. After premiering at Sundance, the film played Cannes and was scheduled to be released on March 26, before being bumped to April 30. Now, it has no date at all.

Ryan Gosling Signs on for Untitled Steve Carell Comedy

Ryan Gosling chilled us to the bone in Murder by Numbers; he made us ache with empathy in Lars and the Real Girl; he made us swoon/roll our eyes in The Notebook.  But the question remains: can he make us shoot overpriced cola out of our noses?  We’ll find out soon enough.  Variety reports (and laineygossip.com reported a couple days ago) that the 29-year-old Canadian actor is set to co-star in an upcoming Steve Carell comedy for Warner Brothers.  The as-yet-untitled project is said to revolve around a man (Carell) contending with marital troubles and a sputtering relationship with his children.  Gosling will assume the role of the central character’s “suave best friend” in the pic, which will be helmed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, directors of the upcoming and already-controversial black comedy I Love You Phillip Morris.

Details on this project are obviously sparse at this point.  The script was written by Dan Fogelman, the scribe behind typically light fare like Bolt, Cars, and Fred Claus.  However, given the presence of Gosling along with helmers Requa and Ficarra (who you might also know as the writers of Bad Santa), I don’t think it’d be unreasonable to expect this particular Carell comedy to be a bit darker/weightier in nature.

You can keep your Valentine’s Day.  The film I want to see on March 26 is I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey, Ewan Mcgregor, Leslie Mann, and Rodrigo Santoro.  The film received lots of love at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and I think it’s great that such big name actors like Carrey and McGregor are willing to go gay for such a bizarre-yet-charming-looking romantic comedy.

The official trailer for the movie has come online and it’s approved for all audiences.  This means it has significantly less butt-sex than is actually in the movie.  Make no mistake, Phillip Morris is a very R-rated film but it also looks very funny.  How do I know there’s lots of butt-sex?  Because that’s what people who have seen the film told me and they even show a little bit of it in this French trailer (but nothing graphic).  They also show Carrey and McGregor kissing because they treat their audiences like they’re adults while apparently Americans are all squeamish children who like our homosexuals as long as we don’t see any act that would define them as homosexuals (sorry, but flamboyant attitudes, an eye for fashion and style, and other stereotypical behaviors do not make someone gay; having a physical attraction solely towards a member of the same sex makes someone gay).

One of the best films I saw at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was “I Love You Phillip Morris”. As I said after I saw it, not only is the film laugh out loud funny, but by the end, you might even have tears in your eyes. Trust me, while the film takes tons of random turns, each road traveled eventually gets you back to the heart of the film…. Steven Russell’s (Jim Carrey) love of Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor).

Anyhow, while America has to wait till February 12, 2010 to see this brilliant film, with only two months till the movie plays in France, EuropaCorp Distribution has released the first official trailer and it’s after the jump. It’ll give you a great feel for the movie. Take a look:
