The cast is filling out for director Brett Ratner’s new take on Hercules. Dwayne Johnson is set to star as the titular hero, and MGM announced today (per The Wrap) that Ian McShane, John Hurt, Joseph Fiennes, and Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen) will be rounding out the cast. This film takes a grounded approach to the story, as Johnson’s titular character is portrayed as a mortal with a fearsome reputation rather than as the demigod son of Zeus. In addition to the aforementioned actors, we learned yesterday that Rufus Sewell (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) is joining the cast as well, and Askel Hennie (Headhunters) signed on last month to play a warrior devoted to Hercules. Production on Hercules is slated to begin this November, with a July 25, 2014 release date planned. [Update: Hit the jump to see who the new additions will be playing.]

Courtesy of THR's Borys Kit, here's a look at the following casting assignments for the latest additions:

Fiennes will play the pampered king who assigns Hercules his labors. Classically, this is King Eurystheus, but it remains to be seen who he'll actually be in the film. McShane is reportedly playing Amphiarus, who is equal parts priest, prophet and warrior who counsels Hercules. The previously mentioned Hennie is expected to play Tydeus. Hurt will play the weary ruler of Thrace, while Ferguson will play his daughter, a healer.

There are two ways to read a bedtime story to a child. The first is to be animated, and to draw the child into the world. You move around, you do the voices of the characters, you pause for dramatic affect, and you help the child craft a dream. The other way is to lethargically read the words on the page, and hope the damn kid goes to bed already. Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer plays like bored parent who begrudgingly recites the same familiar tale. Most of the cast seems to have no idea what to do with their one-dimensional characters, and they're stuck in a bland world that offers few challenges. Furthermore, the film looks astoundingly cheap from the CGI effects right down to the costumes. There's no imagination to Jack the Giant Slayer, and it fails to make a case for why it even needs to exist.

Appropriately, the film begins by cross-cutting between young tenant farmer Jack (Michael Self) and young princess Isabelle (Sydney Rawson) hearing a bedtime story/exposition about giants, who have faded into legend (the story is set to a CGI recreation with graphics that look like they're from a 1995 computer game). The legend says that there was war between humans and giants, but a magical crown was crafted that could control the giants. The beasts were sent back up into the clouds, and peace has reigned ever since. Ten years later, a grown-up Jack (Nicholas Hoult) sells his horse to a monk ...

Tonight's episode of FX's American Horror Story: Asylum not only wrapped up our favorite characters' arcs, it concluded the show's entire second season. Things were tied in a neat little bow with massive character deaths done in the most tasteless possible way...for the most part. After the jump, we'll talk about how Ryan Murphy and the creative team of AHS:A explored and resolved the theme of insanity, who will return next year and just where the show might be headed for season three.

Well, we've made it twelve episodes and managed to whittle the crazy web of plotlines down to the three major arcs. Since the theme of season two is insanity, it's very fitting that the final episode was titled, "Madness Ends." We see how these mental maladies took their final tolls on Cardinal Timothy Howard, Sister Jude, Kit, Lana and Johnny in the finale. Let's take a look at how the madness ended for each of our characters, starting with Jude.

Season two was another great run of performances from Lange. Asylum took her character from the alcoholic siren and hit-and-run perpetrator in Judy Martin, to the stern no-nonsense overseer of Briarcliff ...

We're getting down to the wire and running out of living characters on FX's American Horror Story: Asylum. Tonight we bid fond farewells to three more souls: one was a surprise, two of them died a second time and one of them was simply brushed aside with nary an explanation. This episode was also a bit more toned down than we're used to (well, for this show anyway) so I'm expecting them to lay it all on the table in next week's season finale.

[You have entered spoiler territory. Turn back now or commit yourself to the insanity.]

Tonight's episode might have been the most linear of the season. With only three major plot points to focus on, "Continuum" was very nearly broken into three explicit sections delineated by time (four if you count Johnny's modern-day sojourn to the friendly neighborhood book store at the end). So let's take them in the order they came, shall we?

It's 1967 and Kit, Grace and Alma are all getting along just swell in their quiet suburban home...except for the racist cops and rednecks down the street, the ongoing tension between Kit's live-in lovers and Grace's Close Encounters-style obsession with the alien abduction/Alma's repression of the whole thing. But every non-nuclear family has their issues right? Best to ...

With only two episodes left after tonight, it's nice to see American Horror Story: Asylum wrapping up the myriad plotlines in favor of bringing the major arcs to a satisfying conclusion. We've already said goodbye to a few of the main players but more and more characters just keep popping up. Also returning for this episode is my favorite stand-out director of the series, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon.

Last week, we waved goodbye to the dearly departed Dr. Arden and the Devil-possessed Sister Mary Eunice. Cromwell and Rabe turned in some of the best performances this season, especially considering the lengths they were asked to go. But tonight's episode belongs to Paulson, whose arc is just about at an end. Before we get into the characters, I want to make a special mention of Gomez-Rejon again. From the outset of this episode, I knew that there was something pleasant and familiar about the way it was shot: the dramatic angles, the atmospheric use of lighting and shadow, the lens selection for certain sequences...it all pointed to Gomez-Rejon. Fans of the director will remember me calling out his aesthetic choices in a previous recap and I'm happy to see him back to work on this ...

What better way to kick off 2013 than with a return to FX's American Horror Story: Asylum? Tonight's episode spent a little bit of time getting us reacquainted with our favorite patients and caregivers of Briarcliff, but quickly got back into the crazy head games, battle between good and evil and even threw in a few surprises. If you were sharp-eyed, you may have even picked up on a teaser about the plot line in the third season of American Horror Story.

In the previous episode before the mid-season break, we ended with a dual cliffhanger: the Monsignor had been crucified and visited by the Angel of Death (Frances Conroy), while Arden discovered a very pregnant Grace attended by Pepper (Naomi Grossman). More on them in a second. Let's start off with Kit since "The Name Game" starts with Dr. Arden literally trying to shock the man back to life.

Not a lot happens with Kit in this episode, not in the active sense at least. He's hauled around from place to place and functions as more of a plot transition rather than experiencing any development on his own. Arden lies to him about the alien visitation while Kit was technically ...

Well, we've reached the mid-season finale of FX's American Horror Story: Asylum and what a bloody and cliff-hangery way to end 2012! Not only did we get some carryover from guest star Ian McShane (who was phenomenal last week), but Frances Conroy also featured in tonight's story. But those weren't the biggest surprises as we were left with a shocking cliff-hanger that will have to wait until 2013 for a resolution.

American Horror Story: Asylum stars Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe, along with newcomers Adam Levine, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, James Cromwell, Joseph Fiennes, Chloe Sevigny, Lizzie Brochere and Clea Duvall. Hit the jump for the recap and review of tonight’s episode,"The Coat Hanger."

Tonight's episode kicked off in the present day with Dylan McDermott guest starring as John Morgan who (tada!) happens to be the son of Bloody Face. Meanwhile back at the asylum, Lana finds out she's carrying the original Bloody Face's baby and uses that fact to elicit a confession from Dr. Thredson. The nefarious forces of Sister Mary Eunice, Dr. Arden, Monsignor Timothy Howard, Lee Emerson (McShane) and even Mother Superior all testify against Sister Jude, which lands her at Briarcliff for life. In other news, Dr. Arden is attempting to lure the aliens back for another visit by nearly killing Kit; their return comes with unexpected surprises.

Let's stick with McDermott to start things off. The episode opens with his character revealing to a therapist specializing in obsessions and compulsions ...

No one does Christmastime quite like FX's American Horror Story: Asylum. The first season featured quite the climax with the Harmon family gathered round the Christmas tree; the feel-goods are not so joyous this time around. Featuring Ian McShane (Deadwood) as a deranged Santa Claus, tonight's episode wasn't just a fantastic addition to the series so far, but a stand-alone dark holiday classic.

American Horror Story: Asylum stars Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe, along with newcomers Adam Levine, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, James Cromwell, Joseph Fiennes, Chloe Sevigny, Lizzie Brochere and Clea Duvall. Hit the jump for the recap and review of tonight’s episode, "Unholy Night."

[You have entered spoiler territory. Turn back now or commit yourself to the insanity.]

American Horror Story: Asylum sure has a fun way of saying, "Happy Holidays!" The episode starts off with an introduction to Mr. Emerson (McShane) as he puts a few bullets into a store version of Jolly Ol' St. Nick. We then get to see Emerson terrorize (and eventually kill) just six days before Christmas. Jumping back to our current time in 1964, Christmas has come to Briarcliff. Sister Mary Eunice's influence continues to swell and Dr. Arden appears to have second thoughts about trusting her. He forms a false alliance with Sister Jude, who ends up fighting for her life against the deranged Emerson in a Santa suit. Meanwhile, Thredson and Lana are reunited in a rather creepy fashion, but Kit manages to save the day (and Lana's literal skin).

I can't say enough about McShane's performance in this ...

A new trailer for director Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer has been released. Based on the classic tale, the film tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young boy (Nicholas Hoult) unknowingly opens a gate between the world of humans and the world of giants. This trailer is much more effective than the previous one, as it does a nice job of teasing the epic scope of the fantasy world while also highlighting some of the pic's promising humor. Some of the CG still looks a bit spotty, but the performances from Ewan McGregor and the always reliable Stanley Tucci look particularly promising.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Eleanor Tomlinson, Ian McShane, and Bill Nighy. Jack the Giant Slayer opens in 3D IMAX on March 1, 2013.

Click over to Apple to watch in HD.

Official synopsis:
Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Snow White and the Huntsman is part – and in some ways a culmination - of the worst instincts of big budgets Hollywood fantasies. It tries to combine the appeal of the Lord of the Rings films with a known property, Campbellian archetypes and a more dark and serious take on fantasy material. It’s garbage, easily one of the worst films of 2012. Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron lead the cast in this botched adaptation of the children’s classic. Our review of the film on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The film opens by explaining how the evil queen came to power. Snow White’s mom died and so her father goes to battle and finds a pretty lady named Ravenna (Theron) who he weds. She’s a witch, so she kills him on their wedding night and takes over the kingdom, and locks up Snow White for her childhood. Cut to a decade later and Snow White (Stewart) is a lady. Ravenna talks to her mirror and is told that Snow is the only thing standing in her way in the future, but just then Miss White escapes and goes into the black forrest. The queen has no powers there, so she hires a Huntsman (Hemsworth) to go after Ms. White. Eventually they meet the dwarves (which include Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, Toby Jones, Bob Hoskins and Nick Frost), but here it’s all about destiny, so Snow is the chosen one who can lead her people into battle against the ...

If you haven't been following along with the developments of Cuban Fury, starring Nick Frost (Paul), Rashida Jones (I Love You, Man) and Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids), this new video blog will get you up to speed. The behind-the-scenes featurette shows off the first look at footage from the dance comedy. Cuban Fury stars Frost as a former salsa prodigy who attempts to regain his dancing form in order to impress his new American boss (Jones) with O'Dowd acting as a cock block. James Griffiths (Up All Night) directs from a Jon Brown (Mongrels) script. Cuban Fury, also starring Ian McShane (Snow White and the Huntsman) as Frost's dance instructor, opens March 22nd of next year in the UK and Ireland. Hit the jump to check out the video.

Check out the Cuban Fury featurette below (via Empire):

CUBAN FURY stars Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul), Rashida Jones (The Social Network, I Love You, Man), Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, The Boat that Rocked), Olivia Colman (Hot Fuzz, Tyrannosaur) and Ian McShane (Snow White and the Huntsman, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Sexy Beast).

Beneath Bruce Garrett’s shabby, overweight exterior, the passionate beating heart of a salsa king lays dormant. Only one woman can reignite his Latin fire. Spotlight hits, sweat drips, heels click - Nick Frost IS Cuban Fury.

CUBAN FURY is written by Jon Brown (Miranda, Misfits, Fresh Meat), from an original idea by Nick Frost, and marks the feature film directorial debut of James Griffiths ...

A couple of new release dates have been announced. First up, Lee Daniels’ adaptation of The Paperboy will hit theaters on October 5th (per Deadline). The film stars Matthew McConaughey and Zac Efron as two brothers who team-up to investigate the potential wrongful conviction of a death-row inmate played by John Cusack. The film was met with a less-than-enthusiastic response at the Cannes Film Festival, but I’m still interested in seeing the pic based on the impressive cast. The drama faces considerable competition on that October release date, as Frankenweenie, Taken 2, the a capella comedy Pitch Perfect and the horror film Sinister all open on the same day.

Additionally, Studio Canal and Big Talk Pictures have set the salsa dancing revenge comedy (how’s that for a genre?) Cuban Fury for release on March 22nd in the UK and Ireland. Nick Frost plays a burgeoning salsa dancing star alongside Rashida Jones, Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids), Olivia Colman (Hot Fuzz) and Ian McShane. Production begins next week in London, and hopefully we’ll get a US release date announcement soon. Hit the jump to read the press release.

Here’s the press release regarding Cuban Fury:
London, UK, 20th June 2012 – STUDIOCANAL and Big Talk Pictures today announced that CUBAN FURY will be released on 22nd March 2013 in cinemas across the UK & Ireland. Principal photography on the film will begin on 24th June 2012, shooting for 9 weeks around London.

Casting news updates at a glance:

Stephen Colbert (Monsters vs Aliens) and Allison Janney (Phineas and Ferb) have been cast in the DreamWorks animated production of Mr. Peabody and Sherman, starring Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Max Charles (The Amazing Spider-Man) voicing the title roles.
Ian McShane (Snow White and the Huntsman) will join Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead), Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) and Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids) in dance-off comedy, Cuban Fury.

Hit the jump for more.

First up from THR is the news that not only are Colbert and Janney lending their voices to Mr. Peabody and Sherman, but that the studio is so amped about the project that they've moved it up from March 14th, 2014 to November 8th, 2013. The feature is based on the classic Jay Ward cartoon that centered on Mr. Peabody (the world's smartest dog) and his pet boy, Sherman. The duo ends up wreaking havoc when using their WABAC time-machine and have to restore order. Colbert will voice Mr Peabody's nemesis, Paul Peterson, with Janney as his wife, Paula Peterson. Modern Family's Ariel Winter will star as their daughter, Penny Peterson, a lovable bully who antagonizes Sherman. Mr. Peabody and Sherman also features voice work by Ellie Kemper (The Office) and Stephen Tobolowsky (The Lorax).

Also from THR comes word that McShane will be the latest addition to Cuban Fury, the British romantic comedy helmed by debut director, James Griffiths. Based on an idea by Frost, Cuban Fury follows an ex-salsa prodigy (Frost) who re-ignites his ...

Universal has released an excellent interactive trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman. Rather than the awful trailer-for-trailer trend, I wish more studios would take the interactive approach where the trailer can lead to behind-the-scenes featurettes, concept art, and other fun stuff. The trailer-for-trailer thing only makes me feel annoyed towards an upcoming film, but this interactive trailer makes me want to see SWATH even more.

Hit the jump to check out the interactive trailer. The film also stars Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, and Ian McShane. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st.

Director Rupert Sanders' Snow White and the Huntsman opens in a little more than a month and Universal wants to make sure you know all the key players, so they've rattled off this roll call TV spot. Most of the marketing so far has been geared toward the power struggle between Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) with little attention paid to the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and even less to Prince William (Sam Claflin) and the Dwarves (Toby Jones, Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Marsan). Personally, I feel like the marketing machine has been humming along nicely up until this point; this 30-second teaser spot does little else but splash images of the actors across the screen along with their character names. The new international trailer, however, is a nicely edited piece that reminds me why Snow White and the Huntsman, which opens June 1st, was one of our Most Anticipated movies of this quarter. Hit the jump to check out both videos.

Universal has released a new trailer and five-minute preview for Snow White and the Huntsman. I can't believe I'm excited for either of the two Snow White movies opening this year, but here we are. I'm digging what director Rupert Sanders has done with the visuals and the world he's trying to create. Also, ten points for the Shatterbeast at the end of the trailer (not the official name, but it should be). The trailer gets the job done. As for the extended preview, it contain the first real look at the dwarves in action, so it's worth your time. I like everything I'm seeing, and when Dave caught the film's presentation at WonderCon this weekend, he said the movie looks liked an "action-packed, visual marvel that is positively brimming with emotion." As someone who enjoys action-packed visual marvels that are positively brimming with emotion, this Snow White sounds like the one for me (Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror, by comparison, sounds like the movie for no one).

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and preview, and click here for Christina's interview with Sanders. The film stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Ian McShane, and Charlize Theron. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st.

Trailer and 5-Minute Preview via Xfinity.

As part of Universal's promotion at this year's WonderCon, they showed off some new footage of their upcoming spin on an old fairy tale, Snow White and the Huntsman. Some of it you can see in a series of featurettes we've posted here and here. Some of it will undoubtedly only be shown when the movie hits theaters early this summer. The picture may sound like a simple fairy tale, but after seeing this new footage there is no question in my mind that Snow White and the Huntsman is an action-packed, visual marvel that is positively brimming with emotion. While Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman and Sam Claflin's Prince William may be the requisite brawn of the movie, Snow White and the Huntsman is all about the showdown between Charlize Theron's frigid Queen Ravenna and Kristen Stewart's defiant Snow White. Forget Return of the King, this is "Return of the Queen."

Rupert Sanders' Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Ian McShane, and Charlize Theron opens June 1st. Hit the jump for more.

In an exclusively cut sequence for WonderCon, director Rupert Sanders presented us with a five-minute compilation from Snow White and the Huntsman. It began with a cavalry charge, the daring knights of King Magnus' (Noah Huntley) forces literally smashing through the Queen's Shadow Army. Next, we see Snow White (Stewart) making a daring escape from the Queen's dungeons. It's out of the frying pan and into ...

As their respective release dates loom closer, the battle between the two Snow White films is heating up. A new international trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror was recently released, and today Universal has released two new images from Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman. One of them gives us a peek at a burly Chris Hemsworth flanked by the eight dwarves. Yes, in Snow White and the Huntsman there are eight dwarves (something to do with a rights issue), but they look like a pretty formidable band of warriors here. Sanders assembled a pretty damn impressive roster of actors to play the dwarves, including Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, and Ian McShane.

Hit the jump to check out the images, which also include a new look at Charlize Theron as the evil Queen. I continue to be impressed by what I see from Huntsman, and I’m sincerely hoping that the full film delivers a grand, epic adventure. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Snow White and the Huntsman:
In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) who was dispatched ...
