As the current 3D trend is taking over movie theaters everywhere, it’s now poised to invade your living room. In order to complement the surge in production of 3D televisions and Blu-ray players, The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has announced 36 titles set to be available just in time for the holiday season, with dozens more to follow in early 2011. 10 of the titles will hit stores on November 16, just in time for Black Friday.
The releases include a wide range of titles from AIX Records, DreamWorks Animation, Giant Screen Films, Image Entertainment, IMAX Corporation, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video. It also includes a number of high-profile titles that will be released as exclusives for certain 3D televisions. “We are excited to see so much industry support for bringing Blu-ray 3D home,” said Ron Sanders, President, Warner Home Video and President, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group. “And now, consumers buying 3D home entertainment systems over Black Friday weekend will have ample 3D programming to accompany them.” For a full list of films being released on 3D Blu-ray for the holidays, hit the jump.

20th Century Fox has officially announced Ice Age 4 is moving forward and it’ll get released on July 13, 2012. Tentatively titled Ice Age: Continental Drift, the 3D animated movie was a given after the third film, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, made almost $900 million at the worldwide box office.
In fact, while some sequels make less than the previous film, each Ice Age installment has made more money than the one before. The original Ice Age made $383 million (worldwide), Ice Age: The Meltdown made $655 (worldwide), and I’ve already said the last one almost $900 million. That’s a staggering amount of money for a third film.
The other interesting note is the Ice Age movies have been getting released every three years since 2002. Using simple math, it’s safe to assume Ice Age 5 will hit theaters in 2015.

With Avatar the reigning champ and Sherlock Holmes still to come, Hollywood crossed the $10 billion line for the first time in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales for 2009. Through Sunday, the total stood just $36 million short of crossing the $10 billion line, according to tracking firm Hollywood Box Office, and was set to plow across it Tuesday night.
The year’s top box office attractions were Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and with hits like Harry Potter and The Hangover, Warner Bros. was the North American box office champ among studios. And with both Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Sherlock Holmes and the return of those rascally rodents in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel coming in time for Christmas, the final take is expected to top $10.4 billion.

Few were willing to call this week’s box office race between blockbuster holdover “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and newcomer “Ice Age 3D: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”. A popular all-ages franchise like “Ice Age” would seem to have the upper hand in its first week – especially with the added income that those 3D venues bring in. But “Transformers” had crazy momentum, and as I said on Thursday, it seemed foolish to believe that such momentum would be halted after only ten days. Accordingly, Friday went to “Transformers 2″ with $17.8 million against $17 for “Ice Age 3D”. Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” came in third with $10 million, though for an adult movie competing against cartoon blockbusters that figure is higher than expected. The totals for “Ice Age” and “Public Enemies” are not likely to get much bigger on Saturday – the studios can blame the Fourth of July for that one – but with “Transformers 2″ already claiming a staggering $500 million worldwide, I wouldn’t want to be the one to tell Michael Bay that a puny holiday could stop him. Not much separates “tf2″ and “Ice Age” at this point, however, so check back tomorrow to see if Friday’s positions hold through the weekend…
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Transformers 2 | $17,832,000 | $268,737,000 |
| 2 | Ice Age 3 | $17,000,000 | $41,916,000 |
| 3 | Public Enemies | $10,135,000 | $25,008,000 |
| 4 | The Proposal | $5,158,000 | $86,613,000 |
| 5 | The Hangover | $4,500,000 | $198,282,000 |

The 2009 July Fourth holiday frame got underway on Wednesday with two new features debuting wide: “Ice Age 3D: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” and “Public Enemies”. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is still capable of doing plenty of damage to both as it angles to take a second weekend at number one, however. Fox’s third “Ice Age” feature got off to a solid start with $13.8 million debut from 3,993 theatres (including a record 1,600 3D screenings). This was good enough to trounce the Wednesday “Transformers” take of $10.9 million, though the two films should even out with $60 million a piece come Sunday. Universal’s “Public Enemies” was always playing for third place, though the more adult-themed movie proved surprisingly potent on day one. Solid reviews helped “Enemies” take in an estimated $8.2 million from its 3,319 runs. This puts the film on track to exceed the projected $30 million five-day gross that Universal was floating a couple of days ago. Check back to see which film will ultimately get the upper hand this weekend (though it seems foolish to bet against “Transformers 2″ at this point, doesn’t it?)
According to my contact at Fox, I have discovered that contrary to previous reports, the trailer for James Cameron’s “Avatar” will NOT be attached to “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”. When I first heard that rumor, I was highly skeptical. Why would Fox attach their big 3D movie to a non-3D, non-Fox film? Clearly, if they were going to attach it to a summer movie, it would be “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”. Confident in my own speculation, I reveled in my smug superiority.
But since deep down I’m an insecure man-boy, I double-checked with my contact and asked if it would be in front of either film and she responded that the trailer isn’t finished yet and won’t be in front of either film. This led me to NEW speculation: the first look we’re going to get at “Avatar” is at Comic-Con. If I had to bet money, that’s when I’d say we’re gonna get our first look at the film. Of I’m a compulsive gambler. And speculator. The Gold Rush would not have worked out well for me.
In a savvy move by Fox, the studio is doing a sneak preview of “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinoasurs” this Sunday for the Father’s Day crowd. It will play one showing at 330 theatres across the country and only in 3D. It’s a smart move because it’s the one chance Fox has to get out in front of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and start building some word of mouth. Furthermore, it’s a strong grab at the family crowd and while “Transformers” is PG-13 and will certainly get some families as well, it’s clear that Fox is trying to direct “Ice Age” at families with younger children and kids that hate Autobots.
