We’re more than happy to report all things Coen Brothers, but I’ll admit the first photos from the set of Inside Llewyn Davis were pretty dull. I love signage as much as the next guy, but now we’ve got some good set photos to show you. The new images show off lead actors Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, and Justin Timberlake, and the male cast members have gone bearded. The film is set in 1960s Greenwich folk scene, so the actors look period-appropriate. I’m not sure why Isaac is carrying around a cat, but I’m sure the cat digs his beard. Cats love beards almost as much as they like Internet memes.

The first set photos from the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis have gone online. The film follows a young musician (Oscar Isaac) trying to make it in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene. Filming is underway in Manhattan and the production has sent the shooting location back to the 60s. It’s looking good, although the Coens could just charge onto the set of Mad Men and say “Everything here is ours now. Our Oscars trump your Emmys.” This is a sound plan and I believe Joel and Ethan Coen should seriously consider it.

We’ve got a few quick casting stories to report this morning. First up, Stark Sands (Generation Kill) has joined the Coen Brothers‘ upcoming film Inside Llewyn Davis. The movie takes place in 1961 Greenwich Village and centers on a young musician (Oscar Isaac) trying to make it in the folk scene. The film co-stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, and John Goodman. According to Deadline, Sands will play “Troy Nelson, a young soldier on leave who’s a forlorn and talented musician.” Sands’ recently appeared in the Broadway adaptation of Green Day‘s Americna Idiot.

Joel and Ethan Cohen’s folk drama Inside Llewyn Davis keeps looking better and better. Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, and John Goodman are all set to star in the flick which follows a young musician (Isaac) trying to make it in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene. Now Showblitz reports that Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund is in negotiations to join the cast. Every actor cast thus far has at least a little musical background, and Hedlund is no different as he showed off his singing chops in Country Strong.
The actor is set to star in Warner Bros.’ Akira, but production on that film was recently halted as the studio wants more time to develop the script. That push on Akira opened up room in Hedlund’s schedule to fit Inside Llewyn Davis in.

The NC-17 rated drama Shame follows Brandon (Michael Fassbender), a New Yorker who refuses intimacy with women while feeding his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his younger sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan), unexpectedly moves into his apartment, she stirs up memories of their shared painful past, and Brandon’s life begins to spiral further out of control.
During this exclusive interview with Collider, actress Carey Mulligan talked about how devastated she would have been if she hadn’t gotten to play Sissy, that she never knew what co-star Michael Fassbender was going to do during their scenes, how unflinching and uncompromising director Steve McQueen is, and how sex addiction is a subject that should be discussed, but that this film is definitely not for children. She also talked about how extraordinary it is to be in The Great Gatsby and work with Leonardo DiCaprio and Baz Luhrmann, how the Coen brothers are her favorite filmmakers and that she can’t believe she gets to be one of their characters (in Inside Llewyn Davis), and that she couldn’t refuse the opportunity to work with Spike Jonze. A couple of high-profile 2012 films just added some more great actors to their casts. First up, Showbiz411 reports that John Goodman is set to reunite with the Coen Brothers for a sixth time for their upcoming drama Inside Llewyn Davis. The story follows a young musician (played by Drive‘s Oscar Isaac) trying to make it in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene. Carey Mulligan will co-star and a couple days ago we learned that Justin Timberlake had been offered a role. There are currently no details on what role Goodman will play, but every time he teams up with the Coens, it works out pretty great. Goodman will next be seen in the awards-season contenders The Artist and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Justin Timberlake is shaping up to be quite the actor. After earning high praise for his dramatic turn in David Fincher’s The Social Network, it appears that the actor may be set to work with another master filmmaker. Make that two master filmmakers, actually. Timberlake has been offered the co-lead role in the next film from Joel and Ethan Coen, Inside Llewyn Davis. The film centers on the 1960s folk music scene in New York, so it’s a role that hits all the right notes (zing!) for Timberlake. Drive’s Oscar Isaac has already landed one of the lead roles, as has talented actress Carey Mulligan. Hit the jump for more, including who each actor is poised to play.

British actress Carey Mulligan is certainly on an enviable role. Fresh off of critical acclaim for Drive, she has the haunting NC-17 drama Shame out in December, and she’s currently filming Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby in Australia. Once done there, she’s not slowing down any, as she will start shooting Inside Llewyn Davis (a musician trying to make it in the 1960′s New York folk scene) for the Coen brothers, and then do the new untitled Spike Jonze project from a Charlie Kaufman screenplay that reportedly centers on world leaders who unite to discuss cataclysmic events such as oil prices and wars.
While she was in L.A. recently, Collider got the opportunity to speak with Mulligan about her current and upcoming projects, how outrageously lucky she feels about working with such incredible talent, in front of and behind the camera, how extraordinary it is to be in a Baz Luhrmann film, her audition with Gatsby star Leonardo DiCaprio, how the Coen brothers are her favorite filmmakers and that she can’t believe she gets to be one of their characters, and that she couldn’t refuse the opportunity to work with Spike Jonze. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

The immensely talented Carey Mulligan has just landed herself two pretty great roles. Variety reports that Mulligan will star in the Coen Bros.’ next project Inside Llewyn Davis as well as Spike Jonze’s next pic. Oscar Isaac was recently announced as the lead in Inside Llewyn Davis. The film centers on a musician trying to make it in the 1960s New York folk scene. No other details are known at this time, but their True Grit and No Country for Old Men producer Scott Rudin is onboard to produce once again, and the Brothers Coen expertly infused O Brother, Where Art Thou? with bluegrass so it’s safe to say that this one looks pretty fantastic. Mulligan’s involvement makes the project that much sweeter.

With the pedigree that Joel and Ethan Coen have established in the last 25 years, the lead roles in their pictures are very much coveted. Some of the most iconic characters in recent memory have been from Coen films, from The Dude to Anton Chigurh to the reimagining of Rooster Cogburn. Now, rising star Oscar Isaac (Drive) can count himself among those rare talents, having landed the lead in the next Coen brothers’ picture, Inside Llewyn Davis. The film focuses on the 60s folk music scene in New York’s Greenwich Village, including such icons as Tom Paxton and Dave Van Ronk. Hit the jump for more on the project.

After dishing out a new film every year for the past year, 2011 will be Coen-less. But that doesn’t mean the Oscar-winning brothers aren’t at work on their next project. As we reported over the summer, Joel and Ethan Coen are working on a “music-intensive” project and that the film would be “loosely based one of the 1960s Greenwich Valley folk scene’s most revered names: Dave Van Ronk.” Variety now reports that the film will be entitled Inside Llewyn Davis and “centers around Llewyn Davis’ struggles as a folk musician during the genre’s 1960s heyday in New York City.” That pretty much follows what we had heard thus far and it sounds pretty great. The Coens have heavily used bluegrass (O Brother, Where Are Thou?) and gospel (The Ladykillers) in the past and I can’t wait to see what they do with folk music.
On a related note, the Coen Brothers will reteam with producer Scott Rudin while Studio Canal will co-finance and handle international sales for the flick. Rudin previously worked with the Coens on No Country for Old Men and True Grit and that worked out pretty well. Now that there’s financing, hopefully this film will speed into production and we can get our next Coen film by 2012.
