Robert Downey Jr. Talks PINOCCHIO and Says IRON MAN 3 Could Be “The Best of the Three”

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 10th, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Given Robert Downey Jr.‘s status as one of our biggest movie stars, I was surprised to see he only has two film officially slated over the next couple years, The Avengers and Iron Man 3.  I don’t know how long that will stick, though, since he’s been connected to a dozen or so projects.  A flashy possibility surfaced last week: a new version of Pinocchio directed by Tim Burton, starring Downey as Gepetto.  At the Brazilian premiere of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Downey confirmed his interest in the project to our partners at Omelete:

“I want to talk to him about it, yeah!  C’mon, it’s Tim Burton.”

In the interview, Downey also talked about his excitement about re-teaming with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black on Iron Man 3, suggesting it has the potential to be “one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made.”  Hit the jump for the quote and the clip.

Promo Poster for THE AVENGERS from THE ART OF MARVEL STUDIOS

Today, Marvel Studios released their new book The Art of Marvel Studios and they sent me a copy. The surprisingly heavy box set collects the previously-released hard-cover art books for Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. These books are really a treat for anyone who wants to go through the concept art of these movies and see all the costume and make-up designs that weren’t used (there are some particularly horrific Red Skull designs that didn’t make the final cut). The box set also includes a promo poster for The Avengers. It’s simply the cover art to the box set with The Avengers logo, but since the cover art is nice, it’s a neat poster to have. Consider it a cool bonus to a box set that has the MSRP of $150.00. I don’t think I’d buy the set, but I also don’t have a spare 150 bucks lying around. If I did, I would consider getting it for my coffee table or a brick wall I needed to prop-up (seriously, this thing weighs almost 13 pounds).

Hit the jump to check out the poster. Click here to buy The Art of Marvel Studios from Amazon where it’s currently going for $94.50. And if you missed it, here’s a first look at the toy packaging for The Avengers movie.

Robert Downey Jr. Says He Wants to “Leave It All on the Field” in IRON MAN 3

With the film not set to open until May 3rd, 2013, Robert Downey Jr. is going to have a hard time talking about anything other than Iron Man 3 (or The Avengers) for the foreseeable future. With most of his work on set of The Avengers completed, the actor took some time to briefly discuss his approach towards Iron Man 3 saying:

“My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end. You can pick several different points of departure for that.”

While nothing here can be considered a groundbreaking revelation regarding the project, you can hit the jump for more on what Downey Jr. had to say about Iron Man and reuniting with co-writer/director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

Editorial: What Did Marvel Disassemble to Make THE AVENGERS?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 29th, 2011 at 2:36 pm

slice_avengers_logo_01

There’s never quite been a movie constructed like The Avengers.  No major mainstream movie (or at least none I can think of) has ever been both the sequel to and the cross over of three different franchises.    Furthermore, this vision has not come from a single writer or director but rather from a studio who wants to translate their business model for comics on to the big screen.  That model demands that characters and plotlines carry over between different stories and therefore the consumer must draw from multiple products in order to understand the larger narrative.  However, each story contributing to the collaboration must also stand on its own.

But there’s been a cost to this ambition and that cost has been felt in the plotting of Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger.  We normally feel miffed if a film provides a presumptuous cliffhanger but these three films have gone one step further by gearing elements of their plot towards a final product.  Has Marvel damaged three movies in order to build the biggest superhero movie of all-time?  Hit the jump for more.

Lots of poster debuts today.  Columbia released a simple, beautiful poster for Moneyball, which stands among my most anticipated movies of the fall.  Relativity followed up on the new images from their movies that will appear at Comic-Con — Haywire, The Raven, Shark Night 3D, and Immortals — with the first posters for Haywire and The Raven.  (Immortals and Shark Night were posterized in previous months.)  Lastly, Marvel uploaded two pieces of concept art tied to The Avengers; the Iron Man poster lists the May 2012 release, the Captain America poster gives their state: “Assembled.”

The mighty, mighty Thor brought his blondeness to a theatre near you this weekend: earning an estimated $66 million from 3,955 locations.  That might seem kind of low for a superhero movie destined to lead off the summer season but, actually, it was right about where the God of Thunder was expected to land… being a “lesser superhero” and all.

Drew Pearce to Write IRON MAN 3

by Jason Barr    Posted: March 31st, 2011 at 5:59 pm

On second thought, Shane Black isn’t writing Iron Man 3. Black, the writer/director behind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, is still on board to helm Marvel’s third installment, however, Deadline is reporting that scribe Drew Pearce has been brought on to pen the script. Pearce has experience working with Marvel material as he wrote the script for Runaways based on Brian K. Vaughan’s imprint favorite revolving around super-powered adolescents who attempt to take down their parents’ crime ring. Additionally, Pearce was the creator of the UK television series No Heroics.

Per the report, Pearce will “start from scratch and work closely with Black” on the Iron Man 3 screenplay. This is perhaps comforting news for those who were excited about the prospect of Black handling the writing duties as well as directing. Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing what the Black/Pearce team can come up with to reignite my interest in the franchise. Iron Man 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2013.

Shane Black Talks IRON MAN 3; Confirms He’ll Write the Script

Last month we learned that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) had been hired to direct Iron Man 3.  However, Marvel “hadn’t figured out” if Black would also write the script.  Now it looks like they’ve solved that problem and come to the correct answer: Black will direct and write Iron Man 3.  Black, whose previous screenplays include Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, confirmed he would write Iron Man 3‘s screenplay to an audience at the Omaha Film Festival.  He also revealed other interesting aspects about the film, which you can find out after the jump.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, especially if the first man is a finished movie or TV production and the other man is an eBay memorabilia business.  Fans of Battlestar Galactica, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, Stargate SG-1, and other geek properties may want to get their wallets out to buy some movie memorabilia.  Sure, an Iron Man poster is nice, but wouldn’t you rather have a fake newspaper with the headline, “Who Is The Ironman?”  And while real books are all well and good, you could fill your shelves with the corner-less books from the Battlestar Pegasus.  And fellas, if you want to impress that certain special someone, you might want to pick up fake blood samples from BSG and Incredible Hulk.  She’ll be like putty in your hand when you say, “Hey, baby.  Check out all this blood I bought off eBay.”
