We recently reported that Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) would be joining Tom Hiddleston as a baddie in Thor 2, so Iron Man 3 went ahead and added their own firepower. In this case, “Firepower” is actually the villain that Ashley Hamilton (Sunset Beach) is in talks to play. In the Marvel universe, Hamilton’s character was the pilot of a “power suit” prototype built by the government (likely, S.H.I.E.L.D.) under the codename “Project: Firepower.” And we all know that, once you’ve strapped on a suit of battle armor, it doesn’t take too long before you challenge Tony Stark/Iron Man himself (Robert Downey Jr.). Also returning, in a producer capacity, will be Jon Favreau. But it looks like fans will be able to see the Iron Man director on screen as well. Hit the jump for more.

With production only a few weeks away, the cast is firming up for director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3. Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle are all set to return for the third installment of the Iron Man franchise, with Sir Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, and Rebecca Hall rounding out the newcomers of the cast. Now one more Marvel newbie has been added in a particularly interesting role, as Variety reports that James Badge Dale (The Pacific) has joined the cast as Eric Savin aka Coldblood. Hit the jump for more.

After launching a series of Marvel Studios films that would eventually culminate in the biggest opening weekend of all time with The Avengers, director Jon Favreau decided not to return to helm Iron Man 3. Favreau deserves a lot of credit for Marvel’s success, as he launched Iron Man as a superhero film that could be both grounded and fun, and planted the seed for the serialization and cross-pollinating of the future Marvel movies to come. In an inspired choice, Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) was pegged to take the helm of Iron Man 3, and production is gearing up to begin in a few weeks with Ben Kingsley onboard as the villain and newcomers Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall added to the cast alongside Robert Downey Jr. and co.
Favreau recently spoke a bit about the success of The Avengers and the third Iron Man film, revealing that he’ll be producing Iron Man 3 and will actually have a very involved role in the production. In addition, he teased what we can expect story and character-wise when Tony Stark graces our screens once again. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Disney and Marvel have tapped Rebecca Hall (The Prestige) for the female lead of Iron Man 3. The powers that be have moved quickly to initiate talks with Hall, as the previous frontrunner for the role, Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life), turned them down only yesterday, citing scheduling issues. All the better for Hall, who can prepare for her role as a “sexy scientist” who rivals Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in intelligence. The third installment will feature the return of Downey Jr. after his scene-stealing turn in The Avengers, along with Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Guy Pearce will join the fun and Sir Ben Kingsley is on board to play the villain. Production on the Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3 starts this month in North Carolina before heading off to China en route to a May 3rd, 2013 release date. Hit the jump for more on Hall’s role and the overall plot of Iron Man 3.

In late April, we learned that Jessica Chastain was eyeing a role in director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3. Well, not entirely unexpectedly, Chastain has had to decline the role due to scheduling difficulties. The role was reportedly that of a “sexy scientist” who rivals Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark in intelligence. Last year, the incredibly talented Chastain burst onto the scene with roles in seven films including The Tree of Life and The Help. She’s become very in-demand as of late, and her schedule just became too crowded to make room for Iron Man 3.

The release of The Avengers is now only a week away, but Marvel and Co. are already busy prepping for the beginning of production on Iron Man 3 later next month. It’s no secret that much of the first Iron Man’s success is due to the charisma and talent of lead actor Robert Downey Jr., but as these things go, Downey most likely won’t be donning the suit for Iron Man 9. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently addressed the issue of what the studio would do should Downey decide to bow out of the role in the near future. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

When Disney took the stage for their CinemaCon 2012 presentation yesterday afternoon, they didn’t mess around. Loaded with footage, movie stars, filmmakers and information, the presentation was definitely aimed at letting exhibitors around the world know that the Disney umbrella (which now includes Pixar, Marvel, Walt Disney films, and distributing DreamWorks live-action films) is loaded with a lot of big properties and they have no intention of slowing down. While some of the upcoming properties just had the stars and filmmakers talking about the movie (The Lone Ranger), others like Frankenweenie had Tim Burton on stage with Sean Bailey (President of Production at Disney) talking about why he wanted to make a stop-motion black and white movie, followed by the screening of a full scene.
In addition to what I just mentioned, Kevin Fiege from Marvel talked about Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Thor 2, and The Avengers. Pixar’s John Lasseter talked about their next four years of movies including director Lee Unkrich‘s untitled Dia de los Muertos movie, Bob Peterson‘s The Good Dinosaur, Pete Docter‘s untitled movie, Monsters University (including world premieriing the teaser trailer) and a clip of Finding Nemo in 3D and the first 30 minutes of Brave. More after the jump.

With only about four weeks left before Iron Man 3 begins shooting, some casting additions are still being made. Not only has the great Sir Ben Kingsley come on board in a villainous capacity, but the charismatic Guy Pearce is reportedly adding his talent to the Marvel movie. Now, the latest reports have Jessica Chastain back on track to join the threequel. Her role is purportedly that of a sexy scientist who rivals Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in intelligence. Chastain was previously thought to be in the mix for the role before scheduling issues complicated matters. With her film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers pushed back, it looks like Chastain will be joining Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and possibly Scarlett Johansson for Iron Man 3. Hit the jump for more.

The cast for Iron Man 3 is looking very, very good. We recently learned that Ben Kingsley was in talks to play the unspecified villain role in the film, and now it looks like Guy Pearce may be joining the cast as well. Pearce has already been turning fanboy heads by appearing in an incredibly intriguing viral tease for Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sci-fi pic Prometheus and for his charismatic turn in Lockout, and now it looks like he’ll be a certified “fanboy favorite” by Comic-Con. Hit the jump for more on the nature of Pearce’s role.

Iron Man 3 has been selected as one of the twenty-five U.S. films to be released in China, and the movie will be co-financed by Chinese production company DMG Entertainment. In a nutshell, this deal is good for Marvel because: A) It means the production will probably have more money; B) DMG Entertainment and the Walt Disney Company China will be distributing the movie in China, which is a huge audience and therefore huge profits; C) It makes inroads with Chinese audiences for future Marvel movies. Since China only wants tentpole movies, and they tend to want them in 3D, this deal pretty much confirms that Iron Man 3 will either be shot or post-converted into 3D, which will most likely in no way improve the movie. The press release also mention that some of Iron Man 3 will be shot in China in late summer 2012.

It’s officially The Avengers day here on Collider, again. We’ve already brought you Twitter reactions to the film’s premiere last night, 20 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage, a press conference interview with more than half the cast, and Steve’s interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige that’s chock full of information on every single upcoming Marvel project. Now it’s time to focus on a curious bit of information that came out of said press conference. Our correspondent Christina Radish was in attendance, and right before the press conference ended. Robert Downey Jr. dropped this little nugget: “We are shooting one more scene. Tonight. Not kidding.” [Update: Mark Ruffalo has confirmed Downey Jr.'s comment. Hit the jump for more.]

With Marvel and Disney’s The Avengers opening around the world in the coming weeks, last night was the world premiere in Hollywood and it was also the first time members of the press were shown the film. As you may have already read on my Twitter feed, I loved it and think Joss Whedon delivered a movie that both fans and casual moviegoers are going to love. Also, it’s really funny and it has the best action of any Marvel movie thus far.
Anyway, just an hour ago I got to sit down with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Since I already posted an in depth conversation with him when I visited the set of The Avengers last year, I decided to use my limited time to discuss Marvel’s future projects like Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, the Avengers sequel and whether Joss Whedon is signed to come back, what movies are coming in 2014 and 2015, Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, if Marvel is making an animated movie, another Hulk movie, and so much more. Hit the jump for more.

The release of The Avengers is now less than a month away, but Marvel is gearing up to start production on their first post-Avengers pic, Iron Man 3. Though little is known regarding the plot, Marvel and director Shane Black have apparently settled on their villain. Variety reports that Sir Ben Kingsley is now in final negotiations to take on the antagonist role in the third Iron Man pic. Though Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau had been setting up the Mandarin as the villain for Iron Man 3, insiders apparently denied that Kingsley would be playing the brilliant and wealthy Chinese scientist. So who exactly will he be playing? Hit the jump for more.

Notice to all those who live in Wilmington, NC or can move there in the next few weeks. You can be an extra in Caged Heat! That’s right, you can hang on the set with Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Scarlett Johanssen in this Marvel superhero sequel. Oh right, need to mention: Caged Heat is the working title for Iron Man 3. OLV pointed us to a Facebook page seeking extras to shoot Caged Heat in Wilmington, right where Iron Man 3 will start production in a few weeks. Click the link if you’re interested. Otherwise, hit the jump for a recap of what we know about the sequel.

I’d like to take a moment to say thank you to Robert Downey Jr. Ultimately, he’s the reason we’re getting an Avengers movie. While it’s easy to look back with 20/20 hindsight and see why he’s perfect as Tony Stark, at the time he was a controversial choice and many weren’t sure he could pull it off. Cut to now. The first two Iron Man movies have made over $1.2 billion dollars at the worldwide box office and Iron Man 3 is already in pre-production. Also, as a result of the first Iron Man, Marvel was able to expand their feature film library with Thor and Captain America, and now that they’ve been acquired by Disney, the future of comic book movies is brighter than ever. So, like I said, a big thank you to Robert Downey Jr.
Last year, when The Avengers was filming in New Mexico, I got to visit the set with a few other reporters and participate in a group interview with Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. They talked about what the film is about, how we finally get to see Tony Stark in New York City, the relationships between all the characters, improv versus sticking to the script, costume changes, working with Joss Whedon, and a lot more. Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.
