Robert Downey Jr. Talks PINOCCHIO and Says IRON MAN 3 Could Be “The Best of the Three”

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 10th, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Given Robert Downey Jr.‘s status as one of our biggest movie stars, I was surprised to see he only has two film officially slated over the next couple years, The Avengers and Iron Man 3.  I don’t know how long that will stick, though, since he’s been connected to a dozen or so projects.  A flashy possibility surfaced last week: a new version of Pinocchio directed by Tim Burton, starring Downey as Gepetto.  At the Brazilian premiere of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Downey confirmed his interest in the project to our partners at Omelete:

“I want to talk to him about it, yeah!  C’mon, it’s Tim Burton.”

In the interview, Downey also talked about his excitement about re-teaming with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black on Iron Man 3, suggesting it has the potential to be “one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made.”  Hit the jump for the quote and the clip.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige Talks about Building to THE AVENGERS 2

In order to build a film like The Avengers, Marvel had to look far in advance and make sure that their major superhero films contributed to the upcoming blockbuster crossover.  Even if The Avengers is a massive flop (and that’s highly unlikely), Marvel is already making its plans for The Avengers 2.  Speaking at New York Comic-Con this weekend, Marvel Studios’ President of Production Kevin Feige talked about the company’s future films.  Unsurprisingly, Iron Man 3 will be part of what Feige calls “Phase Two of this Avengers Assemble talk.”

So what else will be part of “Phase Two”?  Hit the jump for more.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.  Feige says they’ll be continuing their tradition of including a brief scene post-credits [via Cinemablend].

Marvel’s Post-AVENGERS Slate Includes ANT-MAN, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE INHUMANS

While Marvel has been pretty upfront about their slate of films in the past, giving audiences a long lead-in to the far off films like Thor and Captain America, their next slate of movies after The Avengers has been much more quiet. Now it looks like the cat’s been let out of the bag, as Marvel’s next five movies after their all-star superhero flick includes: Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Inhumans. We knew about Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, as they both had release dates, and Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man had been up in the air for a while, but the other two are relatively new additions. Hit the jump for the details.

Robert Downey Jr. Says He Wants to “Leave It All on the Field” in IRON MAN 3

With the film not set to open until May 3rd, 2013, Robert Downey Jr. is going to have a hard time talking about anything other than Iron Man 3 (or The Avengers) for the foreseeable future. With most of his work on set of The Avengers completed, the actor took some time to briefly discuss his approach towards Iron Man 3 saying:

“My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end. You can pick several different points of departure for that.”

While nothing here can be considered a groundbreaking revelation regarding the project, you can hit the jump for more on what Downey Jr. had to say about Iron Man and reuniting with co-writer/director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

Don Cheadle Talks IRON MAN 3, THE AVENGERS, HOUSE OF LIES, and His Miles Davis Biopic

In his new film, The Guard, Don Cheadle plays humorless FBI agent Wendell Everett in this comedic fish-out-of-water tale of murder, blackmail, drug trafficking and rural police corruption written and directed by John Michael McDonagh.  We sat down with Cheadle at a roundtable interview today to talk about The Guard and while we were at it we also asked him about his upcoming projects like Iron Man 3, Showtime’s House of Lies, his Miles Davis project, and The Avengers.

The big news for Marvel fans is that Cheadle says Iron Man 3 will probably shoot in February and “there’s talk of a War Machine spinoff.”  With Iron Man 3 hitting theaters May 3, 2013, a February start date makes a lot of sense.  In addition, Cheadle says that even though his contract had an option to appear in The Avengers, Marvel hasn’t “exercised that option yet.”  With filming underway in New Mexico, it’s looking like Tony Stark won’t have his pal Rhodey around.  Hit the jump for what he said and look for the full interview very soon.

Exclusive: Marvel’s Kevin Feige Talks THOR, AVENGERS, ANT-MAN, DOCTOR STRANGE, Animated Movies, Reveals What’s in Odin’s Vault

With Marvel’s Thor getting released in America next weekend, earlier today I got to sit down with Kevin Feige (the President of Production at Marvel Studios) at the Los Angeles press junket for Thor.  While I could have asked about how Thor came together and what it was like to make the movie, I previously posted a huge on set interview where he discussed all of those subjects.  So I decided to use my time to talk about the future of Marvel and what are some of the cool Easter Eggs in Thor.

Of course that’s not all that we talked about, as we also discussed Iron Man 3, The Avengers, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, why did they cut out a mention of Hank Pym in Thor, what exactly is in Odin’s Vault (and what’s missing), what is Marvel doing at Comic-Con, was the filming last week in Times Square for Captain America or The Avengers, why did Thor get released internationally a few weeks early, and he reveals “there will be a Marvel animated movie at some point.”

Trust me, if you’re a fan of Marvel movies, you really want to hit the jump.

So Shane Black Is Writing IRON MAN 3 After All?

Ever since Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) signed on to direct Iron Man 3 last February, there’s been some confusion on whether or not he would write the script.  It seemed like a no-brainer that Black, who broke into Hollywood with his screenplays for films such as Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, would also get to handle the script for IM3.  But then we learned that Marvel had hired Drew Pearce (the British TV series No Heroics, the upcoming Marvel movie Runaways) to handle the screenplay, but would also “work closely with Black”.  Now CinemaBlend is reporting that Black is co-writing the script with Pearce.  CinemaBlend also reports that Pearce was brought in to keep the script family-friendly since Black is known for his R-rated work.  I find that slightly difficult to believe since I’m pretty sure Black is talented enough to write a PG-13 script.

The real question in all of this isn’t about how the credits will shake out, but Black’s level of involvement.  If he’s heavily involved with the screenplay, that’s terrific, but I seriously doubt he would be shut out of the process.  Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr., is set to open May 3, 2013.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Talks Future After THE AVENGERS; Confirms THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA Sequels

Not long ago, once Marvel Studios had proved itself as a major player in the summer tentpole game, a slate was released for all of the upcoming films from the new studio. Fans relished the thought of seeing Thor, Captain America and The Avengers on the big screen. Well, after this summer only one new film on that slate will be left (The Avengers) and audiences are left wondering: what will Marvel do next? Thankfully, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently talked about the future of the studio and what flicks are on the horizon.

In addition to confirming sequels for Thor and Captain America (set in modern-day, no less) he discussed possible spinoffs for Black Widow, Hawkeye and S.H.I.E.L.D as well as the long-talked-about Dr. Strange movie. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Michelle Monaghan Video Interview SOURCE CODE; Also Talks About KISS KISS BANG BANG & IRON MAN 3

Opening this weekend is Summit Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller Source Code.  Directed by Duncan Jones (who previously made the incredible Moon), the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright.   If you aren’t familiar with the plot, Gyllenhaal stars as a soldier who wakes up in the body of a stranger on a Chicago commuter train and “learns he’s part of a government experiment called the ‘Source Code,’ a program that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life.”  If you’re nervous that Jones was a one hit wonder, don’t be.  Source Code is an intelligent thriller that’s definitely worth your time.  You can read Scott’s review here. I also definitely recommend it.

A few days ago I covered the Los Angeles press day and after the jump you can watch my conversation with Monaghan. We talked about doing press, what’s her karaoke song, did she immediately say yes when approached for the movie, did she watch Groundhog Day before filming, Quantum leap and the Easter Egg for fans of the show in Source Code, improv, and I mention my love of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and how she needs to be in Iron Man 3 (as that would reunite her with Shane Black and Robert Downey Jr.)

Drew Pearce to Write IRON MAN 3

by Jason Barr    Posted: March 31st, 2011 at 5:59 pm

On second thought, Shane Black isn’t writing Iron Man 3. Black, the writer/director behind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, is still on board to helm Marvel’s third installment, however, Deadline is reporting that scribe Drew Pearce has been brought on to pen the script. Pearce has experience working with Marvel material as he wrote the script for Runaways based on Brian K. Vaughan’s imprint favorite revolving around super-powered adolescents who attempt to take down their parents’ crime ring. Additionally, Pearce was the creator of the UK television series No Heroics.

Per the report, Pearce will “start from scratch and work closely with Black” on the Iron Man 3 screenplay. This is perhaps comforting news for those who were excited about the prospect of Black handling the writing duties as well as directing. Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing what the Black/Pearce team can come up with to reignite my interest in the franchise. Iron Man 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2013.

Shane Black Talks IRON MAN 3; Confirms He’ll Write the Script

Last month we learned that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) had been hired to direct Iron Man 3.  However, Marvel “hadn’t figured out” if Black would also write the script.  Now it looks like they’ve solved that problem and come to the correct answer: Black will direct and write Iron Man 3.  Black, whose previous screenplays include Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, confirmed he would write Iron Man 3‘s screenplay to an audience at the Omaha Film Festival.  He also revealed other interesting aspects about the film, which you can find out after the jump.

THE KING’S SPEECH Director Tom Hooper May Next Tackle LES MISERABLES; Was Offered IRON MAN 3

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 23rd, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Director Tom Hooper is currently in the last leg of the award season circuit for his Oscar juggernaut The King’s Speech. The film is poised to be a big winner come Sunday night, and there’s also a very good chance Hooper will walk away with the Best Director award (he won the DGA last month). Well now he’s starting to look ahead to his next project, and he might be taking on yet another decidedly European tale: a new version of the classic novel/Broadway musical Les Miserables.

24 Frames reports that the director is weighing an offer to helm a big-budget musical version of the story. Working Title, which also produced Atonement, is producing the film. More interesting, however, is a mention in the report that Hooper was offered the directing gig for Marvel’s Iron Man 3 before turning it down (Writer/director Shane Black eventually landed the job). A bold choice, I’d say, given that the director is decidedly fresh, with only a few low-key dramas under his belt. What do you think? Should Hooper follow up his Oscar-bait turn with Les Mis? Would he have been right for IM3?

Shane Black to Direct IRON MAN 3!

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 17th, 2011 at 1:43 pm

Last week, we reported the exciting news that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) might write and direct Iron Man 3 now that Jon Favreau was off the project and directing Magic Kingdom instead.  Now, Deadline is reporting that Shane Black will re-team with Robert Downey Jr. and direct Iron Man 3.  As to whether or not he’ll write the flick, a source tells Deadline “That’s not figured out.” I say let Black write it. There–I just figured it out.  You’re welcome, Marvel.

This is terrific news for a variety of reasons.  First off, it means that we most likely won’t have to wait past 2013 for a new Shane Black film (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang came out in 2005 and Iron Man 3 is set for May 3, 2013). Secondly, while Kiss Kiss was Black’s directorial debut, it showed a sharp eye for comic-timing, striking visuals, and mood, and while the stakes and the technical issues become much larger with a movie like Iron Man 3, Black isn’t a rookie to this business and I know he’ll have the confidence to handle the production.  Finally, a successful Iron Man 3 could help Black get other projects off the ground.  He’s also attached to direct an adaptation of pulp hero Doc Savage and the manga Death Note, but I don’t know if he’ll be able to squeeze one of those in before heading to work on Iron Man 3.  However his schedule shakes out, I’m overjoyed that a phenomenal screenwriter and incredibly promising director like Black is coming on board the Iron Man franchise.

Shane Black Might Write and Direct IRON MAN 3

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 9th, 2011 at 6:14 pm

Well, Marvel certainly wasted no time in starting their search for a replacement once Jon Favreau announced he wouldn’t be returning to the Iron Man franchise to direct the third installment. Marvel is meeting with a number of directors to find their man, but one of those directors in contention is now known: Shane Black. Black is the screenwriter behind Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, and most recently wrote and directed the fantastic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, starring Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr.

With Black being in contention, this shows that Marvel is certainly thinking outside the box. His rapport with RDJ definitely helps his chances, but he’s never really tackled anything this large-scale before (then again, neither had Favreau). I’m willing to bet Black would make one hell of an entertaining film, so I’m all for it. THR is quick to point out that this does not mean that Black is a sure thing to helm Iron Man 3, but he has met with the studio and given them his take on the third film. Iron Man 2 definitely had its problems, and felt much more like a trailer for The Avengers than a film all its own. Here’s hoping Marvel finds someone who can put their own spin on the flick while also making it a great stand-alone effort. Iron Man 3 is set to be released on May 3, 2013.

Jon Favreau Discusses His Time With IRON MAN and the Allure of THE MAGIC KINGDOM

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 14th, 2010 at 9:56 pm

We learned earlier today that Jon Favreau will not direct Iron Man 3, instead focusing his attention on The Magic Kingdom.  Without too much speculation about what this means for the superhero sequel, this news wield connotations both good and bad.

The bad: Favreau played a major role in making the Iron Man universe so much fun in the first place.  On some level, it would have been nice to see him work with Robert Downey Jr. on the series in perpetuity.  The good: This obviously opens up Favreau to other projects — to spread the wealth, as it were.  He’s got a head start with the wonderful-looking Cowboys & Aliens, and The Magic Kingdom is pure potential.

While in post-production on Cowboys & Aliens, Favreau took the time to reflect on his experience with the Iron Man franchise and look forward to taking on The Magic Kingdom.  Hit the jump to hear what he had to say.
