Not all girls are sugar and spice everything nice. Some are bitter and mean and sometimes that behavior can be downright hilarious. For its first two-thirds, Bachelorette is unapologetic in how ugly, filthy, dark, and angry it’s willing to be for the sake of a laugh. The three main characters are sad and despicable, and writer-director Leslye Headland has no reservations about trying to justify her characters behavior until the last act. Then the movie falls into a sappy place where the humor drains away and we’re asked to root characters who were hilarious but completely beyond redemption.

With less than two weeks left in 2011, it’s time to set our sights on movies that will be opening in 2012. Since the coming year is releasing a ton of big budget movies that will dominate media coverage, we thought we’d take a moment to highlight some of the lesser known fare that will be gracing the screens over the next twelve months. We’ve got some new posters that will be a first look at these projects for some of you and a gentle reminder for others. First up is the superhero “found footage” thriller Chronicle by director Josh Trank (The Kill Point). Trank’s cinematic directorial debut features three teenagers who become imbued with superpowers and how those abilities darken their lives. Next, from David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method) comes Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson (Twilight). The adaptation of the Don DeLillo’s novel by the same name follows a young billionaire (Pattinson) as his limo traverses Manhattan in search of a haircut (not making this up). Finally, the animated Rise of the Guardians, which has the most charming poster in my opinion, is based off of the “Guardians of Childhood” book series by William Joyce and features childhood legends teaming up to take on the Boogeyman. Hit the jump to check out the posters.

Director Louis Letterier’s heist-thriller Now You See Me is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated films of 2013. It’s got a stellar cast (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Melanie Laurent), an intriguing/adventurous premise, and magic! Lots and lots of magic. The story centers on a group of magicians who pull off bank heists during their death-defying acts, and the FBI squad tasked with catching them. Today we’ve got the first full synopsis and a promo poster for the pick from the American Film Market, which you can check out after the jump.
The film was written by Boaz Yakin (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) & Edward Ricourt, Josh Applebaum & Andre Nemec (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), and Ed Solomon (Men in Black). Now You See Me opens January 18th, 2013.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share with you tonight. First up, Isla Fischer is in talks to join the cast of Louis Leterrier’s magician heist pic Now You See Me. Fisher joins an impressive roster that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Melanie Laurent. The story centers on a group of illusionists who pull off a series of bank heists during their performances, and the FBI agent tasked with bringing them in.
Variety reports that Fisher will play a “master technician” who’s responsible for building the contraptions that the magician troupe uses. Amanda Seyfried was originally in negotiations for the role, but her deal never came to fruition. Ruffalo stars as the FBI agent hunting the group down, and Eisenberg will play the leader of the illusionist group, known as the Four Horseman (no relation to the very strong shot of the same name, I presume). Hit the jump for the casting news of Stephen Moyer in Darren Lynn Bousman’s The Barrens.

Two more have joined the cast of What to Expect When You’re Expecting (yes, this is a movie). Following yesterday’s announcement that Jennifer Lopez was in talks to star, Vulture reports that Ed Helms and Isla Fisher are on board as well. The film follows six different couples, Love Actually-style, in the months and weeks leading up to baby-time.
Directed by Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee), the film also stars Cameron Diaz, with Matthew Morrison (Glee) circling a role, though his schedule may be too tight to join the cast. Fisher is taking on a part that was originally offered to Kristen Wiig, but the shooting schedule conflicted with her SNL commitments. Helms will be playing one of the expectant fathers. What to Expect When You’re Expecting hits theaters May 11th, 2012 (please note that I did not use a “due date” joke here. I’ll be accepting medals and accolades at a later date.)
[Update: The Playlist now reports that they've spoken to Ed Helms' reps and he is NOT in the movie after all.]

Isla Fisher may be joining Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Heat Vision reports that Fisher is in negotiations to play Myrtle Wilson, the wife of George B. Wilson and the mistress of Tom Buchanan (Ben Affleck). If Fisher signs on, she’ll join Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby), Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan, wife of Tom Buchanan), and Tobey Maguire (the novel’s narrator Nick Carraway). The other major roles left to be cast are Daisy’s friend Jordan Baker and George Wilson. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Great Gatsby.

I think a name like Wayne McClammy destines you to be either a comedy director or a character on Spongebob Squarepants. McClammy chose the former, helming the viral Jimmy Kimmel Live segments “I’m Fucking Matt Damon” and “I’m Fucking Ben Affleck,” a slew of Sarah Silverman Program episodes, and was in talks to make his feature debut with Desperados. Sadly, Universal never reached a deal with McClammy. 24 Frames reports that Betty Thomas (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel) is next in line for the job and sources suggest she will accept the offer.
Desperados is described as a “female Hangover” in which three women travel to Las Vegas “to set right a situation that had one of the women leaving a scathing message for a man she actually likes.” Isla Fisher is attached to star; the studio is currently looking to fill the other two lead roles. The script by Ellen Rapoport (The Jamie Kennedy Experiment) landed on the Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays two years ago.
Thomas has a spotty resume of late, but I like her hire if only because it’s always unfortunate when you have to put a man in charge of a distinctly female comedy from a fresh female voice.

As a general rule, animated films are family films. The cost of animation is simply too high for a studio to invest in anything other than the lowest-common denominator fare. It’s rare that any studio other than Pixar will craft an animated feature that not only appeals to kids, but has the wits and edginess that will also charm adults. Rango is one of those rarities. Director Gore Verbinski skillfully blends the broad slapstick of animated creatures having goofy adventures with smart movie references, gorgeous visuals, and impressive animation.

Opening Friday is Rango, Industrial Light and Magic’s first fully animated film. Written by John Logan, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin and a slew of famed character actors, the film tells the story of Rango (Depp), a pet lizard lost in the desert who lies his way into becoming the sheriff of a western town. Things go well as he uses luck, gumption, and improvisational skills to fake his way through the job, but when someone steals the town’s water supply, Rango is forced to become a real hero.
As part of our weeklong coverage of the film I was able to sit down with director Gore Verbinski to talk about how he was able to get such a unique movie made, what draws him to a story, the popularity of shaky-cam and “post-action” and gives us a preview of the DVD extras. Hit the jump to watch:

Continuing our weeklong coverage of the film (here’s our exclusive interview with Depp), we have a one on one interview with the beautiful and funny Isla Fisher. We talked about how she handles voice acting in contrast to live action work, the unique filming style of Rango, stress on set and much more. Hit the jump to watch:

For the premiere of the animated feature Rango, hundreds of fans lined the streets of Westwood on Valentine’s Day to catch a glimpse of superstar actor Johnny Depp, who was as gracious as ever in the time he spent greeting them, posing for photos and signing autographs.
Re-uniting the actor with his Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, Rango tells the story of a chameleon (Depp) who suddenly finds himself in a situation that has him playing the role of the hero that he has always aspired to be. Many of the film’s voice actors were in attendance at the Western-themed event, including Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Timothy Olyphant, Harry Dean Stanton, Alanna Ubach, Kym Whitley, Stephen Root and Gil Birmingham. A new clip from Gore Verbinski’s Rango has landed online. I really hope this movie ends up being good because I like the look of it, I like the way it was made, and I like the goofy tone that I’m seeing in this clip and in the trailer.
Hit the jump to check out the clip. The film features the voices of Johnny Depp, Alanna Ubach, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher, and Alfred Molina. Rango opens March 4th.

Rango, the new animated film from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, looks like it could be loads of fun. Paramount is running an ad for the film during the Super Bowl and while it doesn’t have the brand-power of a Captain America or Transformers, I think it will leave an impression.
Hit the jump to check out the Super Bowl ad. Rango features the voices of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Bill Nighy, Stephen Root, Ray Winstone, Beth Grant, Ned Beatty, Harry Dean Stanton, and Alfred Molina. The film opens March 4th.

A few weeks ago, we brought you the list of movie trailers making an expensive appearance during this weekend’s Super Bowl XLV. With the big game still three days away, Gore Verbinski’s Rango has debuted its 30-second Super Bowl cut 72 hours ahead of schedule. Starring Johnny Depp, Timothy Olyphant, Isla Fisher, and Abigail Breslin, Rango tells the “story of a chameleon with an identity crisis.”
Taking into account Rango‘s gorgeous animation and its very solid trailer, this is a film I can’t wait to see. Here’s to hoping it’s costly Super Bowl ad will pay dividends for the film when it opens on March 4th. Hit the jump to check out Rango’s Super Bowl XLV ad.
