The biggest movie of all time (in scope if not yet in grosses) has now led to the biggest weekend of all time at the box office. James Cameron’s 3D Avatar pulled ahead of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes on Saturday, claiming a second weekend at number one with an estimated $75 million from its 3,456 theatres. But there were plenty of good tidings to go around. With estimated ticket sales topping $278 million all-told, the last weekend in December turned out to be both the biggest Christmas on record and the biggest weekend of all time, surpassing that fabled frame of July 18, 2008 when The Dark Knight ruled.

Title Weekend Total
1 Avatar $75,000,000 $212.2
2 Sherlock Holmes $65,380,000 $65.4
3 Alvin & the Chipmunks 2 $50,200,000 $77.1
4 It’s Complicated $22,100,000 $22.1
5 Up in the Air $11,755,000 $24.5
6 The Blind Side $11,300,000 $184.3
7 The Princess & the Frog $8,683,000 $63.3
8 Nine $5,500,000 $5.9
9 Did You Hear About the Morgans? $5,000,000 $15.5
10 Invictus $4,390,000 $23.3

IT’S COMPLICATED Review

All actresses should aspire to not only have Meryl Streep’s immeasurable talent, but her unstoppable career.  Perhaps it’s her ability to play almost any role that elevates Streep as the exception to the rule of actresses’ struggling to remain relevant once they cross forty.  It’s a cruel reality for actresses in Hollywood but Streep carries herself and her career like a woman a third her age.  It’s with this in mind that she can play a woman defying the stereotype of the asexual post-menopausal woman by reigniting her sexuality in Nancy Meyer’s highly enjoyable new film, It’s Complicated.  And while Streep is unsurprisingly fantastic, the best reason to see It’s Complicated is to watch Alec Baldwin give a performance that will give you another reason to lament his retirement from acting in 2012.  Throw in Steve Martin playing a real character rather a cringe-worthy one from his recent family fare, and you have a movie that you may find yourself enjoying even if you’re not the intended audience.

9 Movie Clips plus a Featurette for Nancy Meyers’ IT’S COMPLICATED Starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin

Its Complicated movie image Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep.jpgWe just received nine clips plus a featurette to help promote the upcoming Nancy Meyers romantic comedy It’s Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin.  While I know this is the kind of film my mom will probably love, I’m excited for it too because Streep and Baldwin are very talented and Martin can still be good as long as he’s in a film not made for kids who hate their families.  Also, Baldwin is getting a little Oscar buzz for his performance so that’s good enough for me.

Hit the jump to see all nine clips plus the featurette which we’ve put together all in one player.  You can also read a brief synopsis.  It’s Complicated hits theaters on December 25th.

Alec Baldwin Says He’s Done with Acting

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 30th, 2009 at 5:57 pm

alec_baldwin.jpgIn a recent interview with Men’s Journal [via Reuters], Alec Baldwin, currently one of the most (intentionally) funny men on television right now, says he’ll be retiring from acting after 2012.  He’s pretty down on himself in the piece saying that his entire film acting career has been a failure. “I consider my entire movie career a complete failure,” he told Men’s Journal. “The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that.” I’m sorry that Baldwin uses that metric because he’s not only an insanely talented comedian, but when most people think of the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross, his single scene in the film immediately comes to mind.  He also picked up a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in 2003′s The Cooler and is already garnering some Oscar buzz this year for his work in Nancy Meyer’s upcoming romantic comedy, It’s Complicated.

Baldwin, who will co-host the Oscars this year with Steve Martin, plans to retire at the 2012 season wrap party for 30 Rock.  While I’m saddened at the thought of Baldwin, who’s only 51, leaving the acting game, at least we can all enjoy the glory that is Jack Donaghy for another two years.
