Last week we saw a number of trailers and images for all of the networks’ new series that will debut this fall, but one was curiously left out: NBC’s Believe. The series' trailer has now landed online, and the story centers on a wrongfully-imprisoned death row inmate who is broken out of jail in order to protect a young girl with powerful abilities. The pilot was written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, who also executive produces the series alongside J.J. Abrams. Unsurprisingly this trailer makes Believe look very promising, and I’m really looking forward to seeing more from the show in the near future.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The series stars Johnny Sequoyah, Delroy Lindo, and Kyle MacLachlan. Believe will premiere on NBC midseason, so don’t expect it on the airwaves until sometime after the new year.

Levitation, telekinesis, the ability to control nature, even predict the future… Since she was two years old, Bo has had gifts she could neither fully understand, nor control. Raised by a small group known as the “True Believers,” the orphaned girl has been safeguarded from harmful outsiders who would use her forces for personal gain. But now that she is 10, her powers have become stronger, and the threat has grown more dangerous.

With her life and future now in jeopardy, the “Believers” turn to the only person they see fit to be her full-time protector. That is, once they break him out of jail. Tate, a wrongfully imprisoned death row inmate ...

As someone whose only firsthand experience with the Star Trek franchise comes by virtue of J.J. Abrams' two Trek films, I know I'm in over my head when the topic presents itself. When you mention Trek, you're referencing (either directly or indirectly) a rich legacy filled with peaks and valleys, genre-defining characters and moments, and an international fanbase that rivals any of pop-culture's most enduring titles. And yet here I am, with two films under my belt (both of which I enjoyed), talking about it. Obviously, I have nothing at stake with regards to Star Trek Into Darkness. Whether you like it or dislike it is of no consequence to me. My only aim today is to extend a humble word of caution to the Trek fans who have years of equity built-up in their beloved franchise: be careful not to dismiss or begrudge it solely because it's trying to appeal to the largest possible audience. Abrams' Trek films aren't above reproach, but they also aren't void of redeeming qualities. Try to at least acknowledge some of those qualities when tearing into them or risk coming off as someone whose real issue is that a bunch of people now enjoy this thing that you once considered yourself unique for liking.
All preachiness aside, this week's Top 5 includes several interviews from Star Trek Into Darkness, rumors surrounding Christopher Nolan being approached to direct James Bond 24, the first trailers for Marvel's new ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a new trailer for ...

Star Trek is not iconography. There are plenty of iconic moments, inside jokes, winks, nods, and more, but it all stems from an original story starring fleshed-out characters who answered the call of duty and the call of adventure in equal and enthusiastic measure. Director J.J. Abrams only sees iconography, but it was enough to get him through 2009's reboot. The story was barely patched together, still filled with holes, and wrapped in coincidences, but Abrams' talent as a director managed to bring the story and characters to life in a way that felt fresh and exciting. Much like his take on Captain Kirk, it was slapdash, occasionally clever, frantic, and charming. Unfortunately, a flashy smile and big set pieces can't save Abrams a second time as his follow-up, Star Trek Into Darkness, amplifies the shortcomings of his original effort, and removes the joy as the picture stumbles around looking for character arcs, themes, and a compelling, well-constructed plot. But its greatest embarrassment is in trying to steal classic Star Trek moments without having a clue as to why those moments had meaning.

The reckless Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) comes home to find that his irresponsible actions on a recent mission have knocked him down to First Officer, but he quickly regains his rank after a terrorist supposedly named "John Harrison" (Benedict Cumberbatch) attacks a meeting of high-ranking Starfleet officers. Seeking revenge and clearly having learned nothing from his demotion, Kirk gets permission from Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) to ...

With Star Trek Into Darkness opening soon around the world, our partners at Omelete recently sat down with director J.J. Abrams. During the interview, they talked about what Star Trek mean to him, where he thinks Star Trek should go next and what he's accomplished, and more. In addition, with Abrams preparing to direct the next Star Wars movie, he talked about who shot first, his feelings on the Star Wars prequels, and what's his favorite Star Wars movie. Hit the jump to watch.

Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Peter Weller, and Alice Eve. The film is now playing in IMAX 3D and in 2D and 3D on May 17th.

WARNING: During the Star Trek portion of the interview a spoiler is discussed. I suggest not watching that portion until you have seen the film.

J.J. Abrams:

What does Star Trek mean to him
1:20 - Where does he think Star Trek should go next and what does he think he's accomplished
3:00 - How one of the themes of the film is questioning authority
	4:20 - Who shot first?
4:30 - Does he like the Star Wars prequels?

While Warner Bros. will be taking another stab at Superman on the big screen with this summer’s Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel, it’s no secret that the studio worked for years on a new iteration of the character before both Man of Steel and Bryan Singer’s 2006 film Superman Returns came to fruition. A number of screenwriters and directors tried to crack Superman, and one of the better-known versions that never made it to the screen is the J.J. Abrams-scripted Superman: Flyby. Abrams’ take was an origin story that saw Krypton besieged by a civil war that spills over onto Earth, but it was eventually passed over in favor of Singer's Returns story.

Steve recently landed an exclusive interview with DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, and during the course of their conversation Steve asked Johns if DC would ever consider turning one of the many Warner Bros.-owned unproduced screenplays for a superhero movie into a direct-to-video animated feature. Johns revealed that, in fact, that notion has come up before. Hit the jump for more.

Here’s the exchange between Steve and Johns:
Collider: Something that you guys do really well is DC Animated movies. Is there any possibility of taking a movie script that never got made, like a J.J. Abrams Superman, and taking that script or idea and making a DC Animated movie out of it?

Geoff Johns: There’s always a possibility. That’s not the first time that’s come up. There’s always discussions about what would be really cool to do.
This is ...

As fans await Star Trek Into Darkness with both excitement and apprehension (early reviews have been mixed), all eyes are on what J.J. Abrams has brought to the latest installment of the rebooted Trek franchise. To be fair, he has attempted to step up and take the reigns of a major franchise and he also now has Star Wars on the horizon, but it remains to be seen if 2009's Star Trek was lightning in a bottle, or if the sequel will falter despite the presence of a strong cast and a tremendous-looking performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as the antagonist.

In a recent interview with Star Trek Magazine, Abrams talked about trying to make a Trek film for both the average moviegoer and the die-hard fans, stepping up the villain, if a third film is planned, how he'll balance directing duties for Star Trek with Star Wars, and more. Hit the jump for what he had to say, and be sure to pick up the latest issue of Star Trek Magazine for much more on the film. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX 3D on May 15th and 3D and 2D on May 17th.

Since the first film came out, fans and entertainment outlets have been relentlessly suggesting and speculating about where the sequel could go. Couple all of that chatter with 40-plus ears of actual Trek canon to consider and you could easily become fetal in the ...

When Disney first announced that it had acquired Lucasfilm and was moving forward with new Star Wars films, the level of fan excitement was understandably very, very high. Not only did Disney have new Star Wars films in the pipeline, but the studio was hoping to release the next one—Episode VII—in just three short years. With the potential 2015 release date looming, the search for a director began, culminating with producer Kathleen Kennedy finally tapping Mr. J.J. Abrams to take the helm.

While Abrams is clearly busy promoting the release of Star Trek Into Darkness at the moment, he’s also very deep in development on Star Wars: Episode VII. Steve recently spoke with Abrams’ producer Bryan Burk about Into Darkness, and during the course of their conversation Burk also talked briefly about Star Wars, which he is also producing alongside Abrams and Kennedy. While he was understandably tight-lipped, Burk did reveal that they’re hoping to start filming early next year. Hit the jump to read on.

With Disney pushing hard for a 2015 release for Star Wars: Episode VII, production on the film needs to get underway sooner rather than later. Steve asked Burk if they know when and where they might be filming, and while he noted that it’s still early in the development process, a 2014 start-date seems likely:
“We’re progressing on a schedule to hopefully begin next year, or the beginning of next year, and the location is still kind of floating around in the air all depending on script and ...

In light of today’s national Star Wars holiday, Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams and star Simon Pegg recently sat down to discuss their massive fandom for that other popular sci-fi franchise. In the ensuing video, the two swap stories about seeing Star Wars on the screen for the first time, how his love for that series that affected Abrams’ take on Star Trek, and Pegg speaks to why Abrams is a swell fit to direct the impending Star Wars: Episode VII. Abrams even briefly touches on his wholly different approaches to the Star Trek and Star Wars worlds. Hit the jump to watch, and may the fourth be with you.

I see a lot of movies. All too often, as I'm watching something in a darkened theater, I can't help but think about real life. What email am I missing? Is anything going on with the site that I should be dealing with? Why didn't I grab that awesome looking slice of pizza in the food court before walking into the theater? Real life follows us around like a shadow.

But for two hours at the AMC Century City, I forgot about everything outside the theater. I was transported to another time and place, and I loved every second of the adventure. The only time I felt anything but enjoyment was the second I realized the movie was ending…because it hit me that I'm going to have to wait at least 2 years before I see another mission. While everyone is going to compare J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness to the first film and every other Star Trek adventure before it, I truly believe everyone involved in the follow-up should be congratulated for creating a worthy sequel and a fantastic movie. I can't wait to see it again. Hit the jump for a spoiler free video blog review.

As most of you know, I hate spoilers. What's the purpose of finding out of the twists and turns of a movie before you see it? I can understand learning the ending of a movie you've never going to see...but let's be honest...about 98% of you are going to see Star Trek Into Darkness. ...

Paramount Pictures has released a new 3D trailer for director J.J. Abrams’ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. If you happen to have a pair of red/blue 3D glasses handy, then you're in luck. If not, well I hope you like slightly blurry images. This trailer is simply the latest theatrical trailer only refashioned in kinda-3D. I say kinda-3D because this is far from the quality 3D you'd see in a theater. Nevertheless, if you happen to have a pair of 3D glasses nearby, go nuts.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Alice Eve, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in IMAX 3D on May 15th and in 2D and 3D in traditional theaters on May 17th.

While we know next to nothing about the developing Star Wars: Episode VII other than who’s writing (Michael Arndt), producing (Kathleen Kennedy), and directing it (J.J. Abrams), it appears that at least one detail about the project has become clear in this early production phase. When Abrams was first announced as the director of the new Star Wars film, my immediate thought was, “It sure would be neat to hear composer Michael Giacchino’s take on a Star Wars score.” Given that Abrams and Giacchino have been close collaborators since their days on Alias, many wondered whether the director would stick with Giacchino as his composer or if he’d bring in Star Wars staple John Williams to handle the score.

A couple of months ago Williams revealed that he hoped to be asked back to score the new Star Wars films, and now Abrams has chipped in with his two cents saying that he believes Williams will indeed return to the franchise. Hit the jump to read on.

Speaking at a press conference for Star Trek Into Darkness in Berlin (via CBM), Abrams revealed that Williams will likely be handling the score for Star Wars:
“[Michael Giacchino] is truly one of the most influential members of our crew, and I think this score, he really outdid himself. Again, for Star Wars, it's very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film, because he was there long before I was."
Fair enough. While I was really hoping to see ...

With Stephen King's Under the Dome set for its series debut on CBS this summer, the acclaimed author may be setting his sights on another TV show. J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot is vying for the TV rights to King's time-traveling John F. Kennedy assassination novel, 11/22/63. An adaptation of the book was previously attempted for a feature film, but there were creative disagreements over how to handle the unwieldy tome. It looks like 11/22/63 may be bound for cable as a Warner Bros.-backed TV series instead of a full-length feature. Hit the jump for more.

Deadline reports that Bad Robot is in negotiations for the rights to the King novel with an eye toward producing a cable TV series or mini-series. Still no word on what the hell is going on with The Dark Tower.

Here's the book description for 11/22/63: A Novel (via Amazon):
Dallas, 11/22/63: Three shots ring out.

President John F. Kennedy is dead.

Life can turn on a dime—or stumble into the extraordinary, as it does for Jake Epping, a high school English teacher in a Maine town. While grading essays by his GED students, Jake reads a gruesome, enthralling piece penned by janitor Harry Dunning: fifty years ago, Harry somehow survived his father’s sledgehammer slaughter of his entire family. Jake is blown away . . . but an even more bizarre secret comes to light when Jake’s friend Al, owner of the local diner, enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination. ...

As the release of director J.J. Abrams’ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, the filmmaker is understandably going to be inundated with questions about Star Wars: Episode VII. While we will likely see all kinds of evasions and non-answers from Abrams while on the publicity circuit (and again, understandably so), the director recently sat down with the folks at Playboy for an extended interview, and it’s probably more revealing than anything you’re going to see in the coming months. Abrams discusses his approach to Episode VII and how much input he has into the story, the possibility of him directing Star Trek 3, and even Cloverfield 2 and the prospect of an Alias movie. Hit the jump to read on.

First and foremost, let’s get to the Star Wars bits. Naturally Abrams couldn’t get into story details, but he did talk abstractly about his approach to the project as a filmmaker in the Playboy interview (via /Film):
“It’s so early it would be insane to discuss details or get into plot points about what this unfilmed movie will be. And I’m not going to give my opinion on the original movies or characters… I try to approach a project from what it’s asking. What does it need to be? What is it demanding? With Star Wars, one has to take into account what has preceded it, what worked, what didn’t. There are cautionary tales for anything you take on that has a legacy—things you look at and think, I want to avoid this or that, ...

Legendary director Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Closer) is currently in talks to possibly direct One Last Thing Before I Go, a film adaptation of author Jonathan Tropper’s novel of the same name. J.J. Abrams will be producing the film under his company Bad Robot. Adapted for Paramount Studios, One Last Thing Before I Go tells the story of a washed up rock band drummer named Drew Silver who tries to reconnect with his soon-to-be-remarried ex-wife and his estranged, pregnant daughter. This project would be unique for Nichols, not only because it would be his first film since 2007’s Charlie Wilson’s War, but also because it would be a reunion with Abrams, who wrote the screenplay for Nichols’s 1991 drama Regarding Henry, starring Harrison Ford. [Editor's note: No deal or offer are on the table as of yet.] Hit the jump for a plot synopsis and more details on the film.

Tropper’s literary works have been gaining popularity in Hollywood, as another one of his novels, This Is Where I Leave You, has been adapted to a screenplay for director Shawn Levy (Real Steel), which will star Jason Bateman (Identity Thief) and Tina Fey (30 Rock). Consequently, the author’s stock has risen. Per THR, it cost the studio seven figures for rights to the film and a screenplay written by Tropper himself. I am very excited at the possibility of Nichols helming this film for a couple of reasons. First, reuniting the veteran director with the now well-established Abrams seems like a formula for ...
